Gay Byrne interviews Rory Gallagher on RTE's Late Late Show in 1988 after his "Out on the Western Plain" performance. Thanks to my friend Frank for giving this to me.
I wish you had 25 more years Rory. I really respect this man and his talents, and wish with all my heart i had had a chance to see him. My Dad did, so i at least have the advantage of my dad letting me know how good he was live. R.I.P Rory.
I love this man so much still. the world's greatest bluesman, no one like him since. thanks for sharing this rare clip. mixture of emotions when I watch this. Janis, Singapore
perfecto info. Here in Argentina rory gallagher is unfamous. But for me is 1 of the best guitar players and 1 of my favourite. thanks dude. god bless rory.
Really funny that bit - the look on his face! Though actually he was only 39 as the interview was in February a couple of weeks before his 40th birthday. There's a radio interview a week later (RG interview 1988 part 5) with Dave Fanning teasing Rory about it & Rory jokingly acting all indignant. Great stuff:)
gay byrne treets him like he's just starting out, rory was around for over 24 years by this stage and had won the best guitarist in nme 1971/72? beating clapton and the rest.. still the best player, miles ahead of hendrix or clapton of van halen, rip rory!
Never mind the Gay Byrne thing...he is streets ahead of the current prat, and he had a way with each individual that tried to put them at ease. Rory was probably in unfamiliar teritory on a live lame chat show and a bit nervous. The video was about RG anyway and was great to see it.
He looks nervous. . .it should be gay whos nervous he's standing in the presence of greatness! Guess thats what made rory the unassuming gent he was. Its not fair he's gone. . .
@curlysue27 This took place immediately after the version of "Out on the Western Plain" from the Late Late show, it should be near the top in the related links. This is posted as a video response to that video too
Well I wish I could say that were true. Recently, in the last few years and now 14 years after his death his popularity has increased tremendously in Ireland and around the World which is a good thing. However while he definitely had his home fan base, he never truly got the recognition he deserved in Ireland when he was alive. Ironically, he was more widely known and appreciated in Mainland Europe and even the UK than Ireland. Why? Well it's anyones guess. I have some ideas of my own.
It's a joke, he is around 41 years old here and the interviewer asks him how he has the energy to move around like that, so he says his son "does all that" implying that a younger fitter man does all the movement on stage while he plays guitar out of sight somewhere.
I don't think it's true that he doesn't know who Rory is but he probably didn't follow his career much after his initial arrival onto the scene in the 60's. You have to remember that he would have been regarded as an out and out rebel back then. Many of Taste's songs were hard hitting anti authority anthems while Gay Byrne was a middle of the road young broadcaster working for the state owned and controlled radio & TV media. Initially Rory wouldn't have had a lot of airplay on conservative RTE.
he was born in donegal yes but if he was in GAA parlence he'd have played for cork as lived there after he was born. so technically cork, he even admits it in the interview
I don't know, Gay Byrne treats everybody like that really with the way he phrases things and talks to people. I can see what you're saying alright though. And it's a disgrace how little recognition he has ever here alright.
Yea Gay is very condecending here - he could be like that a lot - I'm noy sure he appreciated the musical genius in his presence that night. Rory's quite persona unfortunately held him back - Can anybody tell me the world famous band he was asked to join but refused - the rolling stones?? Im not sure.
@27106204 bit of an over reaction, rory was shy guy off stage, he probably choose to talk on the stage rather than a sit down interview, and gaybo is certainly better than the nob in his seat today

Ngl your really beautiful 😍
I actually remember seeing this on the Late Late live back in the day. Happy days. Struck me back then as an honest trader and still does. Great guy.

we need Rory in music now more than ever,,,,,such a loss
How did I miss this Padraig?what a great interview,Rory was a really down to earth guy,it's a shame he never got his other 20 yrs.
Goddam! Theman worked so hard on stage, and seemed to love EVERY DAMNMINUTE of it!
A STAR, but so humble and soft speaking, so lovely.....RIP RORY 🌹❤
A very interesting interview, although the very end is hardly bearable and broke my heart... Thank you, pàdraig.
It's a good interview alright, great to see him in such good form even in the late 80s.
perfecto info.

The end is heartbreaking isn't it? It's a good interview though, i laughed a few times, "that was my son, he does all that."
rory gallagher should have been played in live aid as the main show. gay byrne is class
to me Rory is the guy who I own lot of inspiration and can explain why I build guitars today.
gay byrne treets him like he's just starting out, rory was around for over 24 years by this stage and had won the best guitarist in nme 1971/72? beating clapton and the rest.. still the best player, miles ahead of hendrix or clapton of van halen, rip rory!

"i like to play ...and i like to play every night".........gospel.
Byrne had no clue. It's like a job interview.
@esdenaze Awsome comment! You nailed it!
Yuss it was the stones!
Nice analogy yeah, i never learned that one in kendo.
Pity he doesn't have a kagemusha, i'd feel a lot happier if i believed he was still alive.

What year is this from? TY
@curlysue27
Looks like Gay just walked over to him after he had played a song.
Such a pity he is not with us today, the damn drink!
Well i feel that's perhaps a little harsh. You're right in that he doesn't show him much respect, that's just his manner.
@LizzieGallagher Rory's cousin, wow! Did you ever meet him?
@LizzieGallagher you are the luckiest person in the planet...really...
he was born in donegal yes but if he was in GAA parlence he'd have played for cork as lived there after he was born. so technically cork, he even admits it in the interview
Gay Byrne as his patronizing prick best.
this feel awkward almost like an aural exam

in Ireland is like a Hero, rght????

@LizzieGallagher OH MY GOD haha :D
