Here’s why your KICKING is WRONG

  • Freestyle kicking technique is challenging for many people. The correct kicking technique makes swimming easier and faster. It is crucial to perform equal kicks up and down during swimming. However, if you make a mistake when you kick only downwards this damages your body position and slows down your swimming.

I applied this drill last time and I find this quite exhausting; I was able to do it for 10-15 seconds then my legs got tired. I hope this is sign that legs are not used to this kind of work. This is why I learn swimming at 30, because all the watera around where I grew up in the mountains, were so shallow that they barely touched the ankle level and when there was rain nobody could swim that because it was extremely fast and with a lot of things in it such as rotten woods and other random things that fell in water.

some people are negatively buoyant so this could be your issue (you can do a float test to figure this out). this is also a very bad kick for treading water which is what this man is doing and you kind of have to have advanced technique and a very solid kick to be able to tread water like this. try using the breaststroke or rotary kicks to tread water if the flutter kick (this video) doesn't work.

The thing is that use of kicks matters only in sprint. Elsewhere u don't use legs or very little to save energy on powering the biggest muscles in your body that gives you very littke in return. That saved energy is then used by arms so the longer the distance the better performance if u don't kick

Basic science behind this is that the force of the downward water meets the force of upward water generated by your legs. The legs then shove that moving water away as they come to the meeting point.
You can test this by making a V with both of your hands touching at the bottom of your palm in a pan of water. Then, while keeping the bottom of of your palms together, close your hands. The water will shoot back as it has no where else to go. This is the similar effect that happens with your legs as they pass each other.

@@yvonneblake2 use a breaststroke or rotary kick. the flutter kick (the one in the video) is very inefficient in comparison. you can also try using a scissor kick to tread water, but breaststroke is the most common amongst competitive and recreational swimmers alike i believe (probably because breaststroke is a stroke that people learn regardless of whether they're swimming for recreation, fitness, or to compete, and it's both powerful and not too taxing so you can sustain it for a long time) and rotary kick is favoured by water polo players and synchronized swimmers (when they're upright) - it's also powerful, slightly more taxing imo (i'm a competitive swimmer though so i'm biased) and the main thing is that you don't bob up and down using this kick. the scissor kick can also work for treading though you will bob up and down with that one too.
