Here’s why your KICKING is WRONG

- Freestyle kicking technique is challenging for many people. The correct kicking technique makes swimming easier and faster. It is crucial to perform equal kicks up and down during swimming. However, if you make a mistake when you kick only downwards this damages your body position and slows down your swimming.

I've never seen a man with more graceful feet
🤨📸
You…..you…….
You're goddamn right
Then you haven seen mine. They're god like.😊😅😅
Fappin' time
Just beware of toe cramps when your learning this
Hahahahahha
my feet cramp so fast doing kicks in the water 😂 I have big strong calves but I guess no endurance. there is some progress though. thanks to this short I have an extra exercise for this 😎 thanks!
My whole lower body would cramp after doing this for 5 seconds
@@stephanies3862😁😆😅🤣🤣🤣
Yes i have this problem also 😢
Wow. Nobody ever told me this or explained it properly. My coach just says " kick from the hip", which I don't even know what that means! Thank you so much for explaining it in plain English. Emglish
My coach just said this to me. I had to come to RUclips for answers 😄
My coach didn't even mention the hip 🤦
Huh i dont do swimming very often but i always kicked from my hip for more power/speed
It means "engage your core."
I wish they'd use real words. Like, in the correct context expected for American English speaking people. I have no idea what they're talkimg about either and had no clue this was a thing. I'll work on it though. I'll have some sexy thighs!
The cramps on your hammies are real for a beginners
My leg screwed me over when I was underwater 🥲

For ankle flexibility, I do ankle exercises while I'm seated watching TV. I do ankle exercises before I get out of bed. I use the calf extension machine, walk tiptoe and jump ups in the pool for warm ups. I'm 72 and need to keep moving so I can keep moving. My swimming speed and endurance have improved.
Sir Isaac Newton said that the only way humans figured out to go somewhere is to leave something behind so splashing is leaving something behind.
i leave my turd behind before i go to school.
Jesus Christ is love ❤
Newton meant, that throwing something behind pushes you forward, transfer of momentum....👍
Jesus™️ is fake. 😂

I have rather poor kick, despite I can swim for an hour without stops I feel my legs are not really delivering the drive. I applied this drill last time and I find this quite exhausting; I was able to do it for 10-15 seconds then my legs got tired. I hope this is sign that legs are not used to this kind of work. I will do this exercise every time I'm on swimming pool and I hope I'll get better in freestyle.
You need to glide
hey, how is your progress?
@@thegodssin3631 guess I have to start looking for "how to glide" videos :)
@@jdb725 Last time I managed to do this drill for 30 seconds and it was still exhausting. Swimming itself goes quite good, I mean progress is slow, but sometimes despite I swim slow I feel like its smooth at least and I'm not very tired in general after 60 mins. Proper kick is still not there... I still have a lot to improve :)
@@jmydy nice, still shows progress though, sometimes i feel like im not kicking as much as i should on my front crawl, something we could both try to focus on to improve :)
I am a swimmer ranked 9th in the USA for my 200 meter backstroke thank you for this tip
That’s impressive
What’s ur time?
yeah for 12u
Ur coach sucks if u ranked 9 and dont know proper kicks 😅
name?
Beware:Do not use this trick in shallow water
😂😂😂
Smack your foot on the bottom 😭
Why would anyone even attempt to swim in shallow waters if they can walk instead? This is why I learn swimming at 30, because all the watera around where I grew up in the mountains, were so shallow that they barely touched the ankle level and when there was rain nobody could swim that because it was extremely fast and with a lot of things in it such as rotten woods and other random things that fell in water.
@@naomilarisavoicu because it's faster
Well, it's not possible anyway.
Also, one thing you can notice is that in the correct form, his legs maintain horizontal instead of sinking down. Generally, keeping your legs horizontal reduces resistance and makes you faster. (Please correct me if I'm wrong)
That's because the pull of the arms, if you don't generate enough speed, your legs will sink.
@@rod750. it's not because of the arms. you just have to keep bringing your legs back to the surface (this is very easy once you get used to it). you should be able to keep your body horizontal in the water without using your arms at all
Keeping your toes pointed contributes to being able to keep your legs high as well.
How the heck are you still buoyant just kicking your feet.? I get in water and I’m buoyant as a rock
😂😂
I’m a beginner myself but I believe you may not be breathing rhythmically according to your body’s movements…breathing in tandem and being relaxed and calm is most of what swimming is about for me. Hope this helps😊
Some people are negatively buoyant. They sink! You might be too
some people are negatively buoyant so this could be your issue (you can do a float test to figure this out). this is also a very bad kick for treading water which is what this man is doing and you kind of have to have advanced technique and a very solid kick to be able to tread water like this. try using the breaststroke or rotary kicks to tread water if the flutter kick (this video) doesn't work.
Good mini-tutorial
It looks a bit like the
moon walk doesn't it .?🤔
This might be a good way for me to remember 😂
If your watching how Rob Jones is dressed
right now, what else can I do about it...?
The thing is that use of kicks matters only in sprint. Elsewhere u don't use legs or very little to save energy on powering the biggest muscles in your body that gives you very littke in return. That saved energy is then used by arms so the longer the distance the better performance if u don't kick
Sometimes my legs stop working altogether, even in the water. Have to keep going... Arms it is.
Just learned this doing my first Ironman! Legs are a waste other than keeping on planed out
Thats right, legs is more for balance, gliding and helping to keep torso as tight as possible on the water surface.
Not enterely true. Apart from Paltrinieri, most 1500m olympics still kick everytime (slower and with less power than shorter distances, of course, but still very relevant indeed)
you do use your legs long distance, you just kick slower. this is also not true for every stroke. the breaststroke and butterfly kicks are a lot more powerful than the flutter kick
I’ll try this next time I’m in the pool. Thank you for the advice & demonstrations. I had no idea why swimming was so hard. Now I know!
Been needing this!!!!
omg you made that look effortless! Will give that a go today.
How’d it go?

@@iamcyborg7972 Slowly but surely! Thanks for asking!

Oddly satisfying. I can’t figure out treading water for the life of me
Same, i figured out it was Basically creating your own surface area, so you can use your arm as a platform by swinging them around and your feet as a platform by doing different kicks
Knees above your hips, shoulders behind your hips. Like sitting in a deep chair angled back, femurs 45 degrees up. Also, knees outward 45 degrees. From here we can rotate, from the knees down, our legs inward. Imagine you’re drawing circles parallel to the bottom of the pool with your heels. Arms moving back and forth in a sculling motion near surface & to your side, palms down.

So graceful and for what...
Simple but perfectly effective!
This just became clear to me after years of trying to improve my endurance. Such a slight change bit I can do many more laps now.
THANK YOU I NEEDED THIS
Same in ballet. When students first try beated jumps, they usually focus on moving one leg around the other, not both equally. This makes for a clumsy looking jump
This is so useful, thanks!
My husband used to be a coach, never told me about this, thanks for sharing tips, maybe i can finally swim like a real fish lol😅
Robert just went in the pool today. Not in
a women's speedo swimsuit, I was wearing
traditional swimming trunks. I do not wear

I just wear shorts and a T-shirt in a public gym.

Amazing technique…
The coach ask to do vertical back in the day, now I know why
Great advice BUT some of us don't have flexible ankles and makes it a bit harder, especially if you are learning how to swim.
Gotta work on that flexibility! I would follow some folks who work on flexibility for athletes!
They just means you don't use your ankle muscles well. My get used to hurt like crazy when i started to drive manual car. Within a couple of weeks my ankle soreness vanished, and they're very flexible now. Yoga helps a lot!
Thanks

Thanks for sharing. What’s the best place to learn how’s to do this.
WHAT??? ILLUSTRATOON IS BAD DAMMIT
Basic science behind this is that the force of the downward water meets the force of upward water generated by your legs. The legs then shove that moving water away as they come to the meeting point.
You can test this by making a V with both of your hands touching at the bottom of your palm in a pan of water. Then, while keeping the bottom of of your palms together, close your hands. The water will shoot back as it has no where else to go. This is the similar effect that happens with your legs as they pass each other.
I am a cyclist and will be fine with this drills.. I would try this next time..
also from this drill you can pracitice butterfly pull, taht you fell really like you have butterfly wings on your back ;)
This music is fire!💥💥

People in the comments, that is not how you effectively tread water.
How do you effectively thread
@@yvonneblake2 use a breaststroke or rotary kick. the flutter kick (the one in the video) is very inefficient in comparison. you can also try using a scissor kick to tread water, but breaststroke is the most common amongst competitive and recreational swimmers alike i believe (probably because breaststroke is a stroke that people learn regardless of whether they're swimming for recreation, fitness, or to compete, and it's both powerful and not too taxing so you can sustain it for a long time) and rotary kick is favoured by water polo players and synchronized swimmers (when they're upright) - it's also powerful, slightly more taxing imo (i'm a competitive swimmer though so i'm biased) and the main thing is that you don't bob up and down using this kick. the scissor kick can also work for treading though you will bob up and down with that one too.
