00:00 Introduction
00:15 The answer is between 1 and 100, there is no simple number. It all depends on your environment, your budget, and other considerations that you have to make. So that's not very helpful and because of that, we put together four different profiles of different men with different needs and requirements, and we walk you through exactly what kind of suit you need, what style, what color, what fabric, so you always look the part and you have exactly the right suit for the right occasion.
02:03 For the man who normally never wears a suit. You're a student, maybe an IT professional, or just in a job where a suit is not required of you, ever. Maybe you work in every casual office, or you work from home, but a suit is just never something that has come up. In that case, I suggest you invest in one dark suit. I suggest you go with a single-breasted suit in a medium to lightweight that you can wear year-round.
04:50 Now let's talk about the second type of man. You are someone who rarely wears a suit, you maybe work at a very casual office but every once in awhile, when you have client contact or a business event, you'll need to get out some suits. In that case, it pays to have at least three suits otherwise, it would look like you only have one suit and you wear the same outfit over and over again which is never advantageous. So the three suits you should invest in are one, a dark navy suit and two, a dark charcoal suit. I suggest you get one of them in double-breasted because it's more formal and another one single-breasted with notch lapels because it's less formal. Ideally, you want maybe the navy suit to be double-breasted because you can wear it as a blazer separately. With those two suits, you're covered for summer and spring weather, as well as for fall and for a winter, they work very well, they're unpretentious, they're very professional, and you'll always be well respected and look at the part. For the gray flannel, you want something a little heavier about of 350 to 400 grams. For the worsted navy suit, you go something with a little lighter about 270 to 300 grams just like in the other suit before. The third suit to invest in for you is something that's a little more casual. It's not as formal and dark and brown tones are ideal for that. It could be a Glen check with an over plaid, it could be a small houndstooth or just something that's a little lighter in color that has a pattern.
06:35 The third type is men who wear a suit to work every day. Because of that, you need a larger rotation of suits because you can always get them stained and if you let your suits rest, they will actually last you longer. For most men in this category, it's enough to own 10 business suits because that's a two-week rotation. With ten suits, different shirts, ties, and shoes, you can create many outfits and it will never look like you're just repeating the same one over and over again. If you're starting out, you may not be able to afford 10 quality suits right from the bat and because of that, it pays to slowly build up that rotation, starting with the most versatile solid ones that we mentioned earlier.
11:38 The fourth type of man is the suit lover. At this point, we can't talk about need anymore and the sky is the limit. It's all about how many suits you want and the limiting factor is likely the amount of closet space you have.

I have been called a mobster with my navy pinstripe. And I love it
May not be nice, but fear and respect are usually synonims
I get the exact same thing
@@FrothyFawn wore that bad boy on an interview today too; funny that you also commented today
That's what I want to get for a suit. Man are they cool. :)
Hahaha… Yeah, the best compliment I ever received for mine was that I “look[ed] like Al Pacino.”
I personally believe that we have become too casual. I’m not against casual dress, but we carry it too far.
yes, but there has been a turn away from that in the last decade. I feel in the early 2000's this whole casual is cool had taken over the decade. Now it's gone more toward over dressing for casual occasions. As a professional socialite, I have seen the difference over the last 10 years.
I think the problem is more that casual dress has been degraded. It's largely because of hip-hop that everyone from children to 70 year old boomers wear sneakers, jogging pants and t-shirts everywhere.
I wore a bow tie twice to business and my boss told me to wear a neck tie. Many dont understand fashion very much. In many cases a bit casualty isn’t wrong! Or sometimes far to much.
@@timothyblake5532 rule #1 never dress better than your boss.
@@trevbarlow9719 But what if he doesn't close the highest button on his collar? And wears a tie over it ;/ And he says he likes wearing ties...
god i wish i had more reason to wear suits, i look so great in them, they make me feel like i actually matter.
Then wear it when ever you want to!
Hello, Raphael!
I have a video idea. How about showcasing the top style icons for gentlemen in every decade since the 1900s? By this way, we can quickly see how men's style has evolved over the years and what timeless pieces have stood the test of time.
excellent suggestion !!!
Good idea! Issue might be copyright for all the photos or video footage.
Gentleman's Gazette understood! Thank you!
Fantastic idea.
Outstanding suggestion!
I have 8 suits; charcoal gray, beige, navy blue, off-white, light gray, deep olive, burgundy, and chocolate. I wear a suit every two weeks when I attend church.
Quite a range but if you only wear one once every two weeks, each is worn three or four times a year?
When will Sven Raphael Schneider take us on a tour of his closet?
Jigabeavis RUclips does not allow videos to be long enough for that.
@@vondahe There's room for a whole channel. That's simply... wonderful.

I’m Number 4! I’m a Suit Lover, I wear suits all day, everyday for my personal style ! I enjoy wearing Vintage 80s/90s Suits
How many suits do you have
So do I
Ay! Same here! :D
Same here
Immovable Object I own over 40 suit jackets! Almost all of them I bought at Thrift Stores
OMG he really called out us sloppy IT guys lol love it!
I think it's great that you bring up different categories of men who (might) wear suits, and not just those who do so often or regularly. Over here in Sweden the vast majority of men, myself included, hardly ever wear a suit. Weddings and funerals, and that's pretty much it, unfortunately. Your advice is helpful!
I can understand that. Having to get all dressed up every day for a job would get kind of old, especially in a place where it gets hot from late spring through early fall and can be 112-115° some days in August.
@@SFVnative 86 ° is way more than enough. I've only worn a suit regularly during a few months when I worked as a church janitor and had some responsibilites during services, weddings etc. and after a while I came to see my suit as simply work clothes.
i work in a climbing gym, if i could wear a 3 piece suit there everyday i would! just not very practical.
my friends think i'm strange because on my days off i like to dress smart.
i definitely want to expand my wardrobe! i'd love 100 suits!
Well they are not your friends then.
Wear a well-fitted suit made from stretchable fabric, with gussets and extra fabric around the joints. Surprise everyone at the gym by scaling the walls the fastest in a suit. Become a wall-crawling John Wick and save the city from criminals. You can do this, Sir Edmund Hillary!
In Hungary people say a man needs two suits. The first when he is marrying, and the second at his funeral 😁
Those are one event.

I love Raphael's voice. Absolute candy for the ear. Soothing, calming. Softly musical. Wonderful.
There is nothing like a custom tailored suit. I had one made for my wedding and it was the most comfortable thing I’ve ever worn and I had never looked better. It beat anything I’d ever worn off the rack for comfort including casual clothes and jeans.
How much did it cost?
@@king_charles It was $400 but that was 21 years ago.
Thanks you.@@mikeanagnostou4399
you mean bespoke? @@mikeanagnostou4399
As a 25 year old man. I great appreciate this advice. And I just want people to know that your recommendations are SPOT ON. The very first suit I bought when I was 20 was a decent quality grey pin stripped suit. And although the suit looked SHARP. It was a terrible suit for me to buy at the time because it turned out to be extremely un versatile and I would have been MUCH better off investing my money at the time in a dark navy or charcoal stuit like he recommended.
"One and.......hundred"
I flenched!
When I worked at one company we had to wear black suits. Now, I am retired. Have some suits and a couple of light jackets that can be combined with dark pants or light pants. I am subscribed and even hit the like button.
Please use a full Windsor tie knot if wearing a cutaway collar. If you can't bring yourself to do that, then do try the Victoria tie Knot. Use half Windsor with forward point collars.
I think I have about 80 suits. Slightly under half are from the 1930s and 1940s. Fine video!
I have twelve suits, I love the way it feels and how good I look in them. I remember this is the age of people who choose to wear and I’m totally one of them. I love them and the original hats like fedoras and top hats.
This guy knows how to dress sharp as a tak i love this content never actualy owned a suit but know im starting to love them!!
Ive always loved suits/coats and formal clothing but i have no formal event to attend where a suit is a required
41 suits and counting! Although I do plan to slow down a bit by limiting my purchases to roughly 2 bespoke suits a year, I still LOVE every minute of curating a quality wardrobe (although storage can be a pain sometimes lol)
Impressive! I myself hope to have that many one day!
How many of these do you wear and how often? It sounds more like you are just a collector because you talk about curating as opposed to actually wearing.
I wanna talk to you
You're crazy
I don't think I'd want to spend my money on collecting suits. I'd rather collect classic cars or paintings. They don't get eaten by moths and other stuff.
I wished people wore suits more frequently like they decades ago.
LegoGuy87 same! I I love suits from most eras. My favourite eras of suits are the 1940s, 1950s and 1969s.
Start wearing suits more often yourself, then. Perhaps you can start a revolution ;)
. I do wear them, constantly.
Nathan May Good, the more people like you, the closer we get to that unobtainable dream of a less casual society
Well the world is warmer than before.there's that
This was a great video topic Raphael, and it was presented very nicely as well !
Here’s another tip: If you need to suit up and don’t have a huge budget, combine their acquisition with your holiday and go to Thailand. Tailored suits are very reasonable here but of course do your homework first so you get a reliable tailor.
They’ll also keep your data so you can order more (if you like their work).
sooo professional .the way you explain things the way you give us information is too professional thnx a lot
Great upload,
The outfit you wore in the video is very sharp.
Great improvement on the video / lighting recently! Well done! (And of course, thanks for your advices)
I love this, 1-100 really got me! 😁 Could I suggest a video focusing on shirts? Cuff and collar types? Slim and tailored? Thanks
Awesome video I’m in the suit lover category! Just purchased my third tuxedo last week
I always enjoy the opinions and advice received here. Thank you.
Your videos are top class. I am about to step up my style and I'm looking for something versatile while at the same time very respectable, dignified and handsome. Thank you for this video.
I only have about 30 suits, but notice I certainly favor some over others. Mostly the half canvassed jackets since they work so well as casual separates.
One of the few mens grooming videos that required taking notes. Outstanding!
Wow you are a pro when it comes to correctly matching different, most feared colours. They look so unique yet so good. I wonder for what occasion you wear that top hat?
The top hat is worn for formal day wear with the Morning Coat ensemble or Morning suit. It is also worn with formal evening wear which is White Tie.
That last suit was dashing.
I am a suit lover as well. And I have a job where I can suit up even though they have a casual dress policy. I am slowly building a capsule wardrobe and this channel is very informative and entertaining. I thought I knew something about classic men's style but I am learning new things every time I watch one of your videos.
Love you, Sven! The video is superb! Thank you!
This was extremely helpful, thanks!
On the man with the right complexion, a black siit is perfect. It's very professional with a white shirt and a tie with interesting patterns and/or colours. I wear a black suit most of the time.
Excellent information , thank you sir
Love the videos and the merchandise! Can we expect the merch to expand to shoes and/or suits later on?
Extremely useful video!
I miss wearing suits to work every day, I used to love wearing them. It was nice to change up shirts, ties, cufflinks, etc. I work in IT and I've only had one job where it was a daily requirement.. otherwise it's usually very casual. At one point I had 7 or 9 suits in rotation.. I still have most of them but now pretty much it's wedding, funerals or job interviews when they are needed.
Great Video Very Informative. Thank You!
I would say at least 1 for most people including myself. I would probably have maybe 2-4. I am also a mixture of archetypes 1 and 4. I love suits but unfortunately have not had the budget or opportunity for a decent quality suit until fairly recently. I am planning to get my first 1 or 2 suits very soon. As a teenager I had a separate black jacket that wasn't altered and later an oversized black pinstripe jacket that also wasn't altered but I don't wear either because I outgrew the old jacket and the new one is still too big and even altering wouldn't be enough. Surprisingly I still received compliments from people who either mistakenly called it a suit or thought I was dashing despite the ill fit or not being a true suit. In that case I would be a mixture of 2 and 4 since I would only wear a suit once a week for church, possibly a bit more depending on if I'm going to an interview or some other event or if I just feel like it. I do prefer double-breasted but owning single-breasted as well will maximize the versatility factor.
Really, a very informative and succinct video. Thank you.
Great topic! Thanks!
Between a 2 and a 3 for me. I bridge the gap with sport coats and blazers.
First time watching your videos. Interesting and informative. I live in the tropics so I rarely wear suits and when I do, it’s usually very light as the climate can be unforgiving.
Good job and keep it up, 😊
This is your best video to date in my opinion. You covered every type man in 14 mins. I'm a suit lover but you have motivated me to take it up another notch.
Thanks for the info !
I've never had a quality suit. So I would have considered myself "sometimes wear a suit", but as I get older (in my 40s) I am gearing more toward a suit lover. Just got fitted for my first quality suit. I'm already eyeing what I want next. Here we go!!!
Im 23 and i wear suits 4 times a week. I currently own 5 suits and 1 that is still not ready for me to pick up. So a total of 6 suits. 1 is navy, 2 are charcoal but one is double breasted. I have a grey pinstripe, a tan, and a forest green or teal if you will. I love playing around with my suits with either ties, shirt patterns, and pocket squares! The suit i recently purchased but still have not received, is a navy pinstripe double breasted suit with peak lapels and im super excited for it. Especially since winter shouldn't be too long from now, i really want to get some turtle necks to wear with it
Excellent video. I plan to at least get to a 5 suit rotation
WONDERFUL!!!! Thank u so much for your expertise and generosity .. Can you please advise on how or whst to wear to stop underarm perspiration?..
Another great video! Love that double breasted flannel! Man I need to get over to Fort Belvedere and get some accessories. Have you guys ever thought of coming out with your own sports coats and suits? It would be nice to be able to buy some of these classic designs! I find myself having to hunt these types of classic clothes down. It would be cool to just come to you guys as a one stop shop!
As always, a great plot. The standard of style.
7 suits. Live in a hot climate. Only need to wear at weddings and funerals but wish I had more opportunity to wear them. Not at funerals obviously. I have most of the bases covered. I’m very lucky because almost always I only need to hem the pants. 44 long off the rack usually fits great and no need for further alterations. The tailor agrees. Lucky.
I have about 15. I lost almost 50 pounds and got rid of a lot of my suits, so I may get a couple more. I wore suits more before the pandemic - working in a hospital with sick patients and germs means I reserve my suits for the office and appropriate social affairs.
My only issue with the suit is the idea that double-breasted is “more formal”. I don’t know that to be the case and I am broad enough that I always opt for single-breasted suit. That quibble aside, this is a great video.
One, dark navy blue. Single breasted. You can use it for weddings, funerals, etc., paired with semi-brogues and a black tie, it'll get you through most situations. I, personally, have a black and a white shirt, cos the rules are a bit different here in Asia. But the Farang turning up at a funeral wearing traditional mourning dress earns a few kudos points. In these very extended asian mourning procedures I tend to go for the black shirt.
just love the button hole on that Gray suit
Thanks for the advice as my job is working on the roads so will invest in a dark worsted suit.
Addicted to your videos Raphael ! we are waiting for more videos per week *_*
Great video. Maybe I missed it and I’m sorry if I did, but a person who wears suits daily needs more than 10 suits. You have to factor in the seasons. I have two types of suits - spring/summer and fall/winter
This guy knows his suits. Nice Video man. 👏👏👏
I love this video It's Very helpful :)
I have 3. A black three-piece, a silvery grey two-piece and a charcoal two-piece made from linen. All fairly light, single breasted. The next investion will probably be a navy blue one (I'm the third type, wearing a suit at least once a week).
Great video 👌
3:08 my goal suit. That pairing looks so classy!
my opinion
Bespoke : 1-3 (Dark Charcoal, Navy and Light Grey 3 piece)
MTM or off the rack: 2-3 (Black and Solid color) for Work
Summer Suit- 2-3 (Linen, Creme, light blue) with Extra pants
Tuxedo: 2 (A black tie tux and a Dark Navy )
Going to get my son his first dark navy this weekend
If you don't wear them to work then 3 are probably enough. The classics: Navy blue, grey and perhaps a black one.
Your shoes are amazing! Oh, and yes, that windowpane suit is stunning! It actually inspired me to get a navy windowpane jacket for myself. It, of course, has a chic feminine cut.
But I do have a question, with patterned suits is it better to go with cuffed pants or not? I notice yours are cuffed but I kept wondering if I would prefer them without since it would elongate the leg. I already have a decent height as a lady (5' 10") and I was just curious.
Also, when pants have a slim fit (not skinny), is it still acceptable to have cuffs?
thanks for posting
Fantastic advice.
Great video💯
Nice video, really in depth and informative. My present work environment doesn't require a suit but I keep four or five because of weddings, funerals, nice dinners and because I do like the opportunities to wear a suit. For most other occasions, I've more than a dozen sport coats, a couple of blazers, some vests that can be mixed with various pants to fit most situations. I agree with you that the black suit is overrated, as a young man I thought that was the epitome of men's suits, but I haven't worn one in decades.
Some of my black suits +trousers go well with my Edmond black loafers or patent leather shoes
Even on casual days, nice to drive in my Jeep---looking real sharp@
very nice video quite informative
ive been waiting for a video lile this too
Could you do a video on what to wear when going into the country or the wilderness. Brilliant video as always by the way
Tweed 'n' wellies :D
I'd recommend a utility/leisure jacket, some cargo pants and a pair of redwing boots.
I am a type 2 archetype...but that could change for the better.
Excellent video. I have a question as a no.2. What type of suit should I wear if I wanted to swop out different waist coats and vests for a never tiring look? Thanks.
People should keep in mind that clothing is Raphael's business so he can use creative accounting to reduce the cost of these clothing options. I would love to see his annual tab for the suits he has. Even though he makes it a point to discuss suit longevity and care in his videos I doubt that there are many years where he does not buy a suit even though he does not really need one or has many like-kind suits in that category. Cheers!
Sort of like what Kirby Allison did to kick start his youtube channel.
Love your videos.
One probably, dark blue, and a black tie. A floral tie for the more celebratory occasions. Paired with half brogue shoes, you're probably good to go for most occasions.
Great video. Would like to see a similar video but with shirts instead
I am definitely a type 4 :). Great video as always raphael !
hi!!! you are a pro.i am happy for you.
You heard him people - if you have more than 100 suits you need to start chucking some!
Where did I say that?
He's joking about the beginning where you said "between one and a hundred"
My co worker has told me he has 100+ suits and I believe him, he is always on a suit.
I have 5 navy suits, 10 ties ( 5 has red pattern with white and 5 other colour combination but they all have white in them ) same to pocket squares... 20 white shirts, and 5 brown shoes and 1 tan suede.....
I was waiting for this video, thank you
Sahejdeep Singh Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki fateh 😊🙏🏻
Same here paaji :)
When I worked in a corporate setting I started with 3 suits which is what I would consider the bare minimum. 5 would have been more ideal. I would replace them frequently around every two years. I always got them on sale. I never paid more than $250 for a suit. However if you are in a customer facing position where you call on clients, up this number to perhaps 10.
Ironically my company went casual so we only had to wear a dress shirt and slacks. My suits stayed in the closet.
thanks
My God - I love you guys!
Excellent channel
0:23 I love the picture of the 2 dollar bill.
I‘m a student and I am a suit lover. I wear them everyday 😂
Ohh my, my granpha was a suit lover.
I would say 3, is nice then you actually use them and you have one when you need it that still fits, is clean and have no smal holes in them.
You can then have a informal medium grey for summer, a blue and a dark grey, one should be a 3 pice.
