"Angel from Montgomery" (Lyrics)
I am an old woman
Named after my mother
My old man is another
Child who's grown old
If dreams were lightning
And thunder were desire
This old house would've burned down
A long time ago
Make me an angel
That flies from Montgomery
Make me a poster
Of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing
That I can hold on to
To believe in this livin'
Is just a hard way to go
When I was a young girl
Well, I had me a cowboy
He weren't much to look at
Just a free ramblin' man
But that was a long time
And no matter how I tried
The years just flowed by
Like a broken down dam
Make me an angel
That flies from Montgomery
Make me a poster
Of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing
That I can hold on to
To believe in this livin'
Is just a hard way to go
There's flies in the kitchen
I can hear 'em there buzzin'
And I ain't done nothing
Since I woke up today
How the hell can a person
Go to work in the morning
Then come home in the evening
And have nothing to say?
Make me an angel
That flies from Montgomery
Make me a poster
Of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing
That I can hold on to
To believe in this livin'
Is just a hard way to go
To believe in this livin'
Is just a hard way to go
Singer. Songwriter. Poet. Icon.
John Prine was an artist’s artist with a list of admirers and collaborators that cut across musical genres and generations - names like Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Brandi Carlile, George Strait, Kurt Vile, Miranda Lambert, The Everly Brothers, Emmylou Harris, among others.
Though he was born in Maywood, Illinois, in 1946, John declared himself “pure Kentuckian” throughout his life. His parents, Willian and Verna, were natives of Paradise, Kentucky. The family would spend summers there in Muhlenberg County, where John listened to bluegrass music and studied the guitar styles of country music heroes Doc Watson and Merle Travis with his older brother, Dave.
In Maywood, he worked as a postman before being drafted into the army in 1966. It was as a postman that John began to write the songs that would connect with so many. He sang at Chicago folk clubs, where he was introduced to singer-songwriter Kris Kristopherson, who invited John to open for him in New York. It was there that Jerry Wexler, president of Atlantic Records, first heard Prine and offered him a recording contract. His self-titled debut album was released in 1971 and featured a list of songs now regarded as classics, including “Paradise,” “Angel From Montgomery,” “Illegal Smile,” Hello in There,” and “Sam Stone.” Prine received the first of his 13 Grammy nominations in 1972 for Best New Artist. He would record three more albums for Atlantic and another three with Asylum.
His profound impact on American music was amplified in 1981 when John co-founded Oh Boy Records, and independent label where he released most of his subsequent work and which gave voice and respect to so many fellow singers and songwriters.
In his distinguished career, John won four Grammys and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2020). He was a three-time recipient of the Artist of the Year Award at the Americana Music Honors & Awards, which also honored him with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. He won the Pen/New England Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award (2016) and was enshrined in the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2019). In addition, John was named Honorary Poet Laureate of Illinois (2020).
John Prine passed away on April 7, 2020 due to complications from Covid-19. The outpouring of grief and love from his fan community was staggering. Over 500,000 viewers participated in an online memorial and tribute that raised more than half a million dollars for Covid-related community causes. In 2021, the Prine family created the Hello In There Foundation to honor John’s spirit of generosity towards those in need. Fiona Prine and her sons continue to operate and expand the reach of John’s independent record label, Oh Boy Records.

Same!
We do too, but dwell upon the fact he was here, not that he is gone. Pick up where he left off and so honor his life. As long as we remember our loved ones they live on in us. Smile at his memory and be at peace. ❤
@@stefanschleps8758 I completely agree with you. My mother always said that she wanted a party and not a funeral..I never understood that growing up and it confused me but when she passed away and we had a "celebration of life" for her it made so much sense.
What a thrill. What a thrill to hear his voice again.
John prine was one of the greatest poets that ever graced this planet with his presence!!! I saw him once in the mid 70s @a little place called the Pojuque canteen,a very small &intimate place in N.M. I asked if he wanted to go outside and smoke one however he was getting ready to play one of my favorites ,Grandpa was a carpenter and I almost cried! I almost cried a lot that night. What a hero he was!!!
Lucky you. I wish I had. Him, Springsteen, L cohen, Neil young. Our poests. And I know I’m leaving out many. Johnny Cash. Geez. We’re so fortunate to have these writers and musicians. We can keep In our back pockets. What a person; John prine. I’m grateful.
Was so happy to hear John Prine in Ozark and have been playing for a week straight now... And I am now going to Ukraine to help in the honor of John Prine!!!
Please take care in Ukraine.
When my big brother came back from Nam in '69, he played "John Prine" almost nonstop for the next year. Songs from that album, including this one, were among the first I ever learned to play on the guitar. I listen to his music almost every day. I also miss the man every day too.
Is he still alive?

We love you John Prine, forever. 💕
Miss you Mr. Prine , Hope you’re enjoying that Vodka & Ginger Ale.
I like your comment. I literally just said that I hope your having that drink and smoking that cigarette 9 miles long.
And now, sir John, you are the angel. Say hi to my brother Mike, another fellow songwriter taken much too soon. 🎼💟☮️
Hello 👋 LAB
How are you doing today
RIP LEGEND
What a beautiful song!!! 😊🎵🎶👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Sings better than my mailman. Rest with the greatest peace, you're still giving. Thank you.
His music is balm for my soul. Love you John!
The 1970’s is the greatest decade ever for music. Released in 1971.
1971, the year I graduated from high school. Definitely the best graduating class for music ever.
Voice were younger so this is the first time I heard this rendition of his classic song. Heard the original full band version. This much warmer. Love to hear John again.
Great way to usher in the mother's day week end. His voice.
Beautiful song.... what we are missing out on is agency and communion in every area...... in love relationships... in relationship with nature... in our work... in school...... when agency and communion are forbidden, dignity and character are forbidden.
So true
beautiful....great Song
I didn't catch this on Osark! I'll have to listen for it!
it was Her dream sequence. her dad and uncles around the trailer I believe
would you recommend that show?
@@Tom_Swiss Ozark? Oh, very much so. Great show! I only have a few more episodes to watch 😭😭
@@tmibeard thank you. il check it out then.
I love him so much. I think I cry at every performance I watch. 😊
In the realm of Wordplay GENIUS Lyricist’s, historically &/or presently, our late GREAT John Prine was truly of that “natural” being… easily on par with the late Great Leonard Cohen & even Bob Dylan, just to name a couple off the top of my mind
Never did see what people saw in Leonard Cohen
My wife introduced me to this guy a decade ago. If not for Violet, I would have missed this gem. RIP brother. I hope you're having that drink, and smoking that cigarette 9 miles long.
Still can only read a few comments from fellow fans about JP. Too many sad sad things happened just following and at same time as dear departed John's passing. Grateful I can at least listen again to most of his work. These days, broken hearts are too hard to heal.
John Prine, A National Treasure!! Never to be forgotten!!
Hope you are enjoying your vodka and ginger ale and your nine mile long cigarette. You will be forever missed.
Greatest American songwriter/singer/human. Love John Prine. Danced to this tune on my weeding day 29 years ago. My heart flutters every time i hear those first few words!
a beautiful version of a beautiful song, sung by the beautifully gifted JP..................timelss
RIP John Prine
Beautiful 🤗 ♥ 🙏
First time I ever heard him I was 15 listening to Tennessee Technology University radio station in late 70's. I bought his album and became a life long fan. His writing ability astounds me. Later, by chance I happened to become friends with an extended family member. This gave me even more appreciation for the awesome song Paradise, my favorite!
Thank you Mr Prine
I learned this song when I was 7 along with every single song off “John Prine” and all the others to follow. Multi-generations in our family still enjoy JP. One of the greatest, so great my dad decided to join him last year for a vodka & ginger ale and cigarette that’s 9 miles long.
🤍
Beautifully done. I haven't heard this one before, but I love his song, In Spite of Ourselves, ever since a friend introduced it to me. I'm glad I got this RUclips notification moments ago. Much love and respect to you, John!
Seek this album (Souvenirs) and listen to every song. I think you'll find a few new favorites. The songs are re-recordings of some of his best, but twenty or thirty years later, when he and his voice had matured. Better than the originals, in my opinion, and a must-have for any Prine fan.
@@dwahnaslowdown8887 Thank you. I appreciate your thoughtfulness and recommendation. I'll hunt for the album now. :)
You should check out the version with him and Bonnie Raitt in later years. I love it. Especially at the end when John blurts out "I love ya Bonnie" and Bonnie replies "I love YOU John." Best buddies the two of them. Still breaks my heart listening to it. He has so many great songs. Enjoy your voyage of discovery.
(Spoiler alert) every John Prine album is good
Still miss him. Listen to him every day.
Rock on!.
Miss him!
I listen to him almost daily on my loops whilei work. His music is something I can listen to over and over. I was able to get tickets for Duluth MN when he played there few years ago. He is missed.
Ruth’s entire character was based on this song. The last episode was named after the line in it “a hard way to go”.
Thanks, Ozarks season 4.
I would be a lot more bitter ,but God Bless this man.
Got my 59th B-day coming up. In the past ten years I've beat for Cancers just finished the forth and raised on prine I believe helped
THANK'S I like hearing John's voice I just don't think of playing him. Thanks again
Always one of my favorite songs. Thrilled to see it on Ozark. Ending was so sad. Feel bad for Ruth 😥 John Prine is legendary.
So enjoyable to hear.
A great song!! So full of the heart and soul that makes music such a great relief from the every day stress of life. Beautifully done by a master of music composition. Storyteller, artist, and performer. They don’t make em’ like john prine anymore. Except for lucinda williams who is another favorite of mine❤️
John Prine in his best voice!
Thanks So much John. For Everything!
Such a great song! ❤️
😭
🙌
one of a kind and I miss him
John Prine wrote lyrics that would be ruined by a video. He injected visuals directly into your brain.
How in the hell can a mailman go to work in the morning, write this song in a relay box and be gone before I knew what he had to say. 🥹
Yes, I also.
Since his passing I can't listen to JP without tearing up.his music is the soundtrack of my adult life 😢
I miss John so much. I'm crying now. They killed him with that ventilator! Rest In Peace sweet man.
I'm 68..been listening to John since my teens..miss him ...
Genius
Still miss him so much! But I hope he is smoking the biggest cigarette ever in heaven.
Rest Easy John ❤❤

Very fortunate to know of Mr John Prine.
@@nigelnipps8613 ... Absolutely... and also very fortunate to know about Mister Lex fridman, where I heard the words, agency and communion.
I was a teenager when I first heard John, I'm 73 now and this song still makes me cry.
