Isn't he playing chess like for ages. ..its pure arrogance in his part ...if it was some random kid being disqualified these same ppl would have sided with FIDE saying rules are rules same for everyone...now why do u want to bend rules??
He's an adult. he can show up on time with clothes on, it's really not asking much. Magnus shows up to events late all the time, it's become a meme. Magnus is 100% in the wrong and acting like a child.
The issue is not the dress code. It’s the disproportionate response by FIDE. If they’d fined him $200 for each game played and told him that the fine would be $500 per game tomorrow, that’s one thing. To start effectively deducting points is insane. Yes, FIDE attracts some bigger sponsorship now. But that’s mainly down to Magnus anyway. Picking a fight on this issue is disgraceful and unprincipled.

The issue is not ‘following the rules’. It’s the disproportionality of making this a major issue during a tournament. The punishment far exceeds the ‘crime’. FIDE exists for and because of chess players. They’re not there to be the subject of virtue-signal bullying. The more so given what MC personally has done to boost the game.
@@chazzabh the issue is only about following of rules. there is no disproportion. rules are beyond players, tournament or personal opinions of people. No one is degrading/undermining the achievements or contribution of MC, but rules are rules, follow or gtfo.

Idk, I wouldn't bother calling people like Carlsen a clown while commenting on random RUclips videos, like me, ha. What the hell are we doing buddy? Certainly not being the world champion, FOR YEARS, of anything!
The attire is a subtle issue. My main issue with FIDE is that they are stuck in the 1980's. Chess evolved enormously since the chess engine's evolution and the widespread accessibility to engine evaluation and resources. There are millions of young very talented players that are in the 1800-2000 rating range, they would smash a 2200 rated from 40 years ago. The titles should be updated. FIDE master title should be from 2000 elo, not 2300 which is ridiculous!!!. Looks like FIDE has been sleeping for the past 50 years with their outdated titles and policies.

Separate rules? Does becoming world no 1 bring everyone down to your whims and wishes? If everyone is getting fined why will magnus not get fined? And playing for these many years doesn't he know the rules? I think its simply a provocation by magnus done purposefully, so that he can continue with his idea of freestyle tournament.
Magnus thinks he is bigger than the game now. The success has went into his head. Rules are rules, same for all players. Time to move on from such self righteous narcissistic mentality players
FIDE is like: "-Albert Einstein, we don't want your contributions to physics because we don't like your hairstyle." Magnus lost the tournament ❌ the tournament lost Magnus ✅
As the CEO, i expect him to look much respectable and presentable. He’s not a player but he’s more than that. Magnus in jeans looks way more cooler than this dude 😅😅😅
Breaking rules can have consequences. But the GOAT didn't break the rules just for the sake of breaking them.He apologized & said he'll change the following day. He voluntarily explained his mistake. I still believe in the saying, "In every rules there is an exemption" as long as it doesn't ignore health & safety conditions. Peace to everyone.❤
I think the freestyle chess is more like an elite club of players who want to make a lot of money. Its not going to help new or upcoming players in anyway. Magus is more into business now and he has had a lot of privilege after his success. To give concession from rules just for him means showing favoritism and it will affect the moral of the other players.

This clarifies what's going on. So, it's basically about creating "Parallel Chess Federation" by Magnus. Now I understand why Magnus said that Classical Chess/World Championship is a "Circus", and now he is trying to put FIDE Rapid/Blitz into bad limelight. Magnus basically trying to take FIDE down to create his own "Parallel Chess Federation".
If the fide lets him go with a simple reprimand everyone else will say fide is taking commercial considerations into account and going soft on their most popular player even though with other players they have taken a hardline in the past/ this tournament. Other players will have started complaining and so will the media. So in my mind correct decision. It just puts them in a bad situation where one party or the other will blame them.
For me, Magnus is right, he said that he want to change his jeans tomorrow, but the arbiter said that he need to changed right now which magnus don't like becoz the tournament started already.
I agree with Magnus in toto! People should be able to play Chess in whatever clothes they want to wear. After all it's not a fashion parade!! Its Chess for God's sakes!! If Indian Chess players want to play in Sarees or Dhoti Kurta (our traditional attire), we will not be allowed to??!!! 🤦♂️🤯
If Magnus has followed Fide rules all these years, why not this time... He should be aware of these and was. Looks like he was not doing well this tournament and used this as an opportunity to not play anymore... Otherwise why would he not follow the rules of he was winning...
According to FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky, players in the next FIDE Chess tournament must wear yellow underwear during the 5th game. The arbiter will enforce this rule, and any player failing to comply will not be allowed to participate in that match
Magnus is turning into a mixture of adamant Bobby Fischer and narcissistic Kasparov. He was losing the rapid title anyways. Doesn't matter if he plays or not. It's not like he did not know the rules. If there are set rules, everyone should obey it. They can discuss the need for change of rules after tournament. He is the GOAT but throwing tantrums while losing is damaging his reputation.
To be fair, he's proven himself to be the greatest of all time, without any doubt... I don't know the whole situation nor his thought process during the incident, but I must say, I stand with Magnus, ha... The guy lost his mother not long ago, and yet continues to dominate like a beast... he's the paragon of the quintessential champion/greatest of all time. I'll give him a pass even if he's in the wrong in this situation, that's for sure.
Magnus was in 41st with a performance rating in the 2500s when he withdrew. Carlsen was also completely lost in some games where he was gifted with draws, he was playing terribly.
Having a superstar athlete who's more important than all the rest is a double edged sword. The sport of armwrestling is experiencing the same thing currently.
Reading most of the comments here, it sounds as if Magnus didn't have much of a chance to retain his Rapid championship this time, so he got himself kicked out of the tournament so he wouldn't have to face losing it. Right or wrong, FIDE has its rules and if you're not prepared to adhere to them, don't play.
Some players were also violating the dress code but they weren't warned. As nepo said, if fide really followed the dess codes then something like 40 players would have been warned.
since you don't play chess and don't follow it i'll go ahead and update you, sparky. he's won the last 300 tournaments. he is unaffected by finally losing a tournament. has nothing to do with that
It's understandable why Magnus didn't want to change before the next round. They are not in highschool. As Magnus said he is too old for this.Too accomplished. What I don't understand is why most people blame Magnus for this. If you were in his shoes, would you do differently

At that level we are talking about the finest art beeing created in the world. When the performance of true artist are possible to happen, we should embrace and enjoy, and dont let principles get in the way. Now people with endless time will find shiet of Emils past and im here for it… next few weeks we will find out he grouped a kid or something.. this is fun :)
What is very clear from the interview Magnus gave on Take Take Take followed by another interview with this CEO is that the events and interactions of today CANNOT be seen in isolation but recent events and interactions with FIDE, Freestyle Chess, and players such as Hikaru and Magnus also need to be taken into consideration. Hiding behind "this is just about dress code" is intellectually insulting to fans of the game. I also am VERY disappointed in the lack of quality mediation between the two sides concerning this and PARTICULARLY disappointed in the (IMHO) way this CEO in that interview tried to suggest Magnus has acted like a prima dona. Chess is joining esports next year and a bit more diplomacy was required at this critical time. There is a lot more to this methinks!
If magnus wanted mediation, he would've tried to at least adhere to rules after being warned which he didn't. He doesn't want mediation, he wants all of chess to revolve around him and his idea of a tournament. Also the fact he wasn't playing well from the start to just to now withdraw is very pretentious.
In round 7 they inform Magnus about the Jeans and fined 200 USD. In round 8 Magnus did not changed so, they provide him opportunity to change it before the starting of round or suspension of round 9, Magnus did not change it and used word: 'principles in the argument. Once I could accept but the real problem is not about the dress code here. One private organization 'Free style chess' asked for the FIDE partition directly into World championship (not researched but - direct admission to World championship such as Grand chess tour. And, want to force the play style in chess championship. Some of their demands didn't accepted by the FIDE, and that why Magnus is creating Drama. It's between the arrogance of person hide behind the word 'priciples'.
i just can't understand! is it a rule given before the tournament begin? or right at the moment that's why he run out of suit on day 9? Because if it is given ahead, i don't know what to think. First, yeah, the rule on not wearing jeans is somehow shallow, but on the other hand, is it that too difficult to follow too? Second, we know he is the greatest as of now, that is not debatable, but should the rules be adjusted just because you are of great importance? I think if the FIDE considered him playing with jeans, some players might break some rules too and they have to forgive them to be fair with less "popular" players, and all the rules will become nonsense. Should people of great value really have the right to break rules and be forgiven just because they are VIP? When you know that you are a VIP, can't you be a little humble to follow the rule first above anyone for the less "valuable" people to respect the organization too? Is it wrong for the organization to stick with their rules and impose it to anyone, may it be their greatest figure and may cause them to fall? sorry.. i just don't know how i feel right now.
i think it's more of people are mad because of how fide did this. Fide could've just fined him per round in jeans. People are also mad at how strict dress code is considering it's chess. Yes the rule was given ahead and some fault does fall on Magnus for also not changing his clothes before the round, however the over the top regulation and strictness against Magnus was what caused this. Also no need to be sorry you have your own opinions :)
Magnus did say, that he agreed to change it the next day. But officials wanted him to change then and there itself. It's a silly rule, if you are forcing the olayer to change there itself before the round. Then what is fine for? Then force the player to change and don't fine. Because the player never broke the dress code during the match if you already made him change.
@@ChessCafe-il3odbut he knew it even before the tournament began? why not bring clothes good for one month event if the event is good for one month? why did he still choose to join from the very start if he thinks the rules are lame?
@lara-9884 he knew about the rules and if you see his interview on take take take. He was cautious about his shoes and other stuffs, but didn't even think about the jeans and that could be a potential inappropriate dress code. It was fine up until then. And he had asked that he would change it tomorrow and wss okay if they keep fining him for the rest of the games. But they asking him to go back, change his pants and then again come back to play another round, that is what triggered him. And i guess it has happened for good. Even Nepo said that in the tournament there are multiple people not following dress code, but the strict rules are only for the top players. And IMO these rules are crap.
It is also about throwing away much value of the tournament for a principle. When the superstar leaves the stage , the concert gets less interesting. And it wasnt necessary to throw away a player. A fine would have been much smarter. If I went to a Andrea Bocelli concert, and was told, sorry, he cant sing today because he is in jeans, but enjoy the fantastic chorus in stead, I would not like that.
All players attended to this tournament know the rules. Magnus is aware of everything and he knew he was warned. And it happened just like he thought, then he resisted for no reason and was kicked out of the tournament. This action that FIDE did there was correct. Magnus should accept the fact that he breaks the rules so the penalty occurs without a doubt. If you don't accept the rules, jsut do not participate the tournaments. That is easy and not disappointing for all.
He did accept lol. He took the penalty and said he was sorry and that he'd change the next day seeing as there was only one game left to play. It was FIDE that pressed the issue and made a big deal about it. Many players that were there have verified that.
@@ijsammy1146 Yeah that dude doesn't realize, that specific sponsor will lose trust in FIDE 🤣 and probably no more in the future. Of course It is disappointing for everyone! Everyone wants to see the number 1 playing! No one cares about him wearing jeans or not! Fide made this a scandal for nothing! None of the players were making a big deal of this... because jeans doesn't bring any advantage hahahahaha They could just fine him increasingly per game... not kicking him off... that was a dumb decision... there was only one game left... and he offered to exchange it the next day...
Again, Magnus is not Jewish, so this is the root of the FIDE attitude toward him. He's not the first celebrity who's under "attack" for being "not Jew".
Lets be honest. Fide is one big circus and is run by bunch of clowns. Magnus is 10x bigger than Fide and I can see this only harming Fide in the long run. Also what is point of fining people if you are going to disqualify/not pair them? Total clown fiesta.
@@rakeshs7463but the game is bigger than Fide technically Also I think Magnus being fined is dumb but I think the dress code is 👍. Magnus should have just changed his pants tbh, but he wants to hurt Fide so it's alright.
It is not a circus just think about it the organisation gives players in remote areas to compete in this game with the best of they are good. Free style might be a good idea for a few players but it will not give chance to everyone around the world. It will just be a circle jerk off top Players who will be invited.
I am wondering if he is becoming a rebel without a cause? I do hear a lot of comments about FIDE being the kind of organisation it is but my curiosity is what is the issue on which Magnus has a disagreement with them? From what I understand, it focusses on his personal benefits, he doesnt seem to bother about the game of chess and its future. What he is focused on is what he likes and wants to do. His fight is purely personal. He gives a damn about others or a cause! So we might think the rules are nonsense and cheer him for standing up for something he believes, lets not be under any misconception that this belief is anything but only for himself!
I agree. If a player on board 60 was unpaired for wearing jeans, Magnus wouldn’t give one you-know-what, and certainly wouldn’t withdraw from the tournament on that player’s behalf in solidarity.
What is happening may not be because of 'jeans'. It may be because of Fide's disappointment with Magnus' advocacy for freestyle chess(proposed by Bobby Fischer). Fide is not ready for freestyle chess yet.
Irrelevant, these questions should be asked before the tournament. But, fide has to enforce rules, it is unfair to others if there are different rules for different people.

This is not about the pants. It's been a long time in the making. Magnus had a lot of issues with Fide and he is simply rebelling. Fide is in a catch 22. They have to implement the rules and cannot exempt one person because he is the number one player in the world. Like all other professional sports the players should have a union to raise these type of matters with the governing body.
Rules are meant to follow.. otherwise what is purpose of rules..and everyone is following why magnus think he is special and don't need to follow any rules
Magnus finds it extremely difficult to deal with losses. FIDE already makes several special provisions for him considering his stature. But he has grown to misunderstand this leeway as an entitlement rather than a privilege. This had to happen some time. I applaud FIDE for ensuring that all players are treated equally during tournaments.
When you understand you can't just win, you leave the tournament creative some drama. It's better to die a hero rather than to see yourself becoming a loser.
Bro even I thought this😅...but if calsen creates the drama for accepting the loss is somewhat couldn't believe, because in 2024 if magnus played, he won all the tournaments.
He is already treated differently lol. Always plays at the number 1 table for one. Has his own lounge etc. Fide took a stand that they are going to regret here. Magnus Carlsen isnt bigger than chess, but he is bigger than FIDE.
Excellent interview! I hope FIDE may be more flexible abour dresses code, and I hope Magnus do not get so emotional to express insults, and to see his relations with FIDE as a war. He es the greatest chess player I have seen, but also he needs to behave properly.
Really? Why should he have special privileges? What is the problem in wearing proper suit to an official game? In Wimbledon they don’t even allow spectators inside if they don’t adhere to a specific dress code. Players can be thrown out if they wear anything not white. There are restaurants in the world that don’t allow people in if they don’t adhere to specific dress codes. Why would an international game event be questioned if they ask players to have a dress code? It’s such a minor thing. Magnus may be greatest chess player ever but if he can’t agree to bare minimums it’s not a good thing and shows he is getting arrogant and doesn’t care about basic things. This is what happens when a player thinks he is bigger than the game. This rule should not be a surprise as it was communicated to all participants well in advance before the tournament. If you don't agree on principal then why did you participate in the tournament? Magnus creating this drama was totally unnecessary and may be wanted to escape from his below avg performance in this tournament

Magnus is not above the rule ,, rules applies to all equally,, Magnus should respect it . If he becomes FIDE president then he can change whatever rule he like but until he is a player then he is not above the game .
It is not about the rule... it is about the punishment above the line! He apologized and said would change it in another day with only one game left! They could just continously fine him per game if he doesn't change... Also FIDE was too harsh... none of the players were complaining about Magnus... they were the ones who made a big deal about it...
The rules are clear. Magnus knew the rules from the beginning. Casual clothes are not allowed. Whether the rules should be revised, it's another story. But the moment the rules exist, they should be enforced and applied to all. That's a poor sportsmanship from Magnus. Frankly, Magnus is semi retired, doesn't mean a lot whether he joins or not. Meanwhile, FIDE needs to rethink the rules.
Poor sportmanship by FIDE! Why not just continously fine him instead of just kicking him out? He apologized and said he would change in the next day with only one day left! None of the players were complaining about this! It was the arbiters who made a disproportionate scandal! FIDE has to hire better people to deal with these situations... otherwise it will continue to have these ridiculous scandals and will end up harming chess as a whole... having other rival organizations
@brenosantos4756 You know, I also think that the event was overly exaggerated by Magnus; he was looking for an excuse to withdraw since his performance was terrible. Anyway, I don't like such rules either, but the moment they have them, they need to enforce them. The dressing codes originate from 19th century and they need to be severely relaxed.
Magnus really exposed himself as an immature baby here. Of course he's been demonstrating that for a couple years now ever since he dropped out of the tournament and accused Hans of cheating with no evidence. He thinks he is above the rules, but he isn't. And he had a temper tantrum... again

This!
If magnus wanted mediation, he would've tried to at least adhere to rules after being warned which he didn't. He doesn't want mediation, he wants all of chess to revolve around him and his idea of a tournament. Also the fact he wasn't playing well from the start to just to now withdraw is very pretentious.

i just can't understand! is it a rule given before the tournament begin? or right at the moment that's why he run out of suit on day 9?

I know you have never run anything because this answer to the sponsors giving you millions isn’t good enough 💀

Anybody can have the World Champion title. It's not yours, FIDE.
INDIA IS THE FUTURE OF MASSIVE CHESS EDUCATION
ask him why jeans are not allowed? i bet he wont have a logical answer lmao
Irrelevant, these questions should be asked before the tournament. But, fide has to enforce rules, it is unfair to others if there are different rules for different people.
@@techbae6157 they already fined him, kicking him out is just stupidity

This is not about the pants. It's been a long time in the making. Magnus had a lot of issues with Fide and he is simply rebelling. Fide is in a catch 22. They have to implement the rules and cannot exempt one person because he is the number one player in the world. Like all other professional sports the players should have a union to raise these type of matters with the governing body.
Rules are meant to follow.. otherwise what is purpose of rules..and everyone is following why magnus think he is special and don't need to follow any rules
FIDE should just fine him and let him focus how to comeback from bad day 1
I don't understand why Fide did so much drama about this... the players wasn't concerned about that...

Let's see who prevails FIDE or Magnus, will FIDE survive without Magnus or the other way around? Kasparov and Short did the same thing.
Maybe FIDE wins and Magnus stops playing the top 10 players in the world. If so the world is the looser.
I expected Carlsen to be thrown out for his hair cut but I didn't see that coming ...
How much money have you put towards sponsoring FIDE? I know it’s zero because only someone without money in the pot would say this

Should he have been treated differently just because he is magnus?
Would magnus have behaved differently if he were not magnus?
Like the philosophy
He must behave differently, if he was in the lead position of the tournament.
He is already treated differently lol. Always plays at the number 1 table for one. Has his own lounge etc.
Fide took a stand that they are going to regret here.
Magnus Carlsen isnt bigger than chess, but he is bigger than FIDE.
if the rule/s was made clear before the start of any tournament and was not abide by with, what are tournament rules for...
Players getting bigger than sport is not good!

Same as in Golf. You can't wear shorts on PGA or DPW. And therefore we have LIV now. Dress codes are everywhere, but it beats me why there is such a code in Chess.
Magnus could've announced he doesnt agree ro rhe rules and will not play before tournament started. Why he waited till he got caught?
Every true chess lover must now left Fide, because now its not a platform of chess but platform of strict rules where u need ur wearing not the mindset to play...
Fix your English before becoming brown sahib
magnus should retire he is washed
His talk reminds me of the C era where everyone was forced to wear masks and if you didn't, you were ostracized. The politicians, on the other hand, didn't need to and even publicly ignored it with weird excuses for themselves (please note Sutovsky's outfit) ;)
Magnus throws a tantrum again. This could have been resolved amicably. Nevertheless, no one individual is above the sport. Rules are for everyone. A few players were already fined and warned; they all complied. The dress code were in fact instituted by the players. In general, the game of Chess will always find another super talent in the near future.
Ok Karen
Yes because wearing jeans besmirches the fine game of chess...what a load of crap.
michael jordan was fined $5000 per game for wearing his personal "shoes" instead of whatever they wanted. They could've just fined him. I feel that if they fine is a win-win situation.
Magnus gets to bend rules, fide makes more money. People can write articles how magnus gets fined... Sponsors are happy cuz of the attention it brings to watch the next livestream.
Just a SIMPLE "fine" of x amount of dollars would've solved the issue and things wouldn't blow up. And not ban him to play round 9 instead. Imagine spending your "free time" in between rounds, to go get a taxi, go to hotel, change (assuming he did bring) and then get taxi back to make it in time to play the next round.
Time wise very stressful, adding the possible embarrassing moment if he forgot to bring the necessary outfit for the game. And on top of that that freestyle drama chess.
from magnus point of view, probably embarrassing to ask someone to borrow a pair of pants.
@@harnageaa The idea that is that you follow the rules, and the fine is an incentive to do so. It's not an "upgrade price" that you can choose to pay to ignore the rules. So the maximum punishment can't just be a fine if someone refuses to take them seriously. It has to be a punishment that makes it clear that the rules are not optional: if you don't try your best to follow them, you won't play!

Magnus is great talent and should be respected I think he needs special treatment His absence in chess circuits will have irreparable damage
Administrators .please solve the problem with tact and special consideration
This is what happens when a player thinks he is bigger than the game. This rule should not be a surprise as it was communicated to all participants well in advance before the tournament. If you don't agree on principal then why did you participate in the tournament? Magnus creating this drama was totally unnecessary and may be wanted to escape from his below avg performance in this tournament
Man who created drama was FIDE!
None of the players were complaining about this!
He apologized and said he would change it the next day... but the arbiter got angry... and wouldn't let him change it the next day with only one game left!
@ When you know the rules very well before the start of the tournament then why do you break it and talk crap like it’s a matter of principle. If it’s a matter of principle then he should not have participated in the tournament.
He did not break the games rules he broke FIDE rules. FIDE isn't bigger than chess and they aren't the face of chess.
@brenosantos4756 Why poor sportsmanship? The rules are the rules.
FIDE don't own the word "World Championship". What a ridiculous request for other tournament not to call themselves that
Yeah my thought too.
Magnus really exposed himself as an immature baby here. Of course he's been demonstrating that for a couple years now ever since he dropped out of the tournament and accused Hans of cheating with no evidence. He thinks he is above the rules, but he isn't. And he had a temper tantrum... again
meh- magnus seems right on just about everything. chess included. Nice to see him wreck Hans too.
FIDE is a joke and MAgnus does not need to suffer them at all. He is more popular by far than FIDE. Players also hate FIDE, if it comes to Magnus and the future of chess vs FIDE, FIDE loses hands down.

About maturity. It isnt that simple. When a man gets really angry there might not be a time for good talking before he cools down, and the anger is buildt up over time with tension between Fide and Magnus.
The chief arbiter of FIDE is not the international boss of chess. Now that he has disrespected the #1 player in the world, Magnus only has to go out and start his own World Championship.
