The issue is not the dress code. It’s the disproportionate response by FIDE. If they’d fined him $200 for each game played and told him that the fine would be $500 per game tomorrow, that’s one thing. To start effectively deducting points is insane.
Yes, FIDE attracts some bigger sponsorship now. But that’s mainly down to Magnus anyway. Picking a fight on this issue is disgraceful and unprincipled.

The attire is a subtle issue. My main issue with FIDE is that they are stuck in the 1980's. Chess evolved enormously since the chess engine's evolution and the widespread accessibility to engine evaluation and resources. There are millions of young very talented players that are in the 1800-2000 rating range, they would smash a 2200 rated from 40 years ago. The titles should be updated. FIDE master title should be from 2000 elo, not 2300 which is ridiculous!!!. Looks like FIDE has been sleeping for the past 50 years with their outdated titles and policies.

What is very clear from the interview Magnus gave on Take Take Take followed by another interview with this CEO is that the events and interactions of today CANNOT be seen in isolation but recent events and interactions with FIDE, Freestyle Chess, and players such as Hikaru and Magnus also need to be taken into consideration. Hiding behind "this is just about dress code" is intellectually insulting to fans of the game. I also am VERY disappointed in the lack of quality mediation between the two sides concerning this and PARTICULARLY disappointed in the (IMHO) way this CEO in that interview tried to suggest Magnus has acted like a prima dona. Chess is joining esports next year and a bit more diplomacy was required at this critical time. There is a lot more to this methinks!

i just can't understand! is it a rule given before the tournament begin? or right at the moment that's why he run out of suit on day 9?
Because if it is given ahead, i don't know what to think.
First, yeah, the rule on not wearing jeans is somehow shallow, but on the other hand, is it that too difficult to follow too?
Second, we know he is the greatest as of now, that is not debatable, but should the rules be adjusted just because you are of great importance? I think if the FIDE considered him playing with jeans, some players might break some rules too and they have to forgive them to be fair with less "popular" players, and all the rules will become nonsense.
Should people of great value really have the right to break rules and be forgiven just because they are VIP?
When you know that you are a VIP, can't you be a little humble to follow the rule first above anyone for the less "valuable" people to respect the organization too?
Is it wrong for the organization to stick with their rules and impose it to anyone, may it be their greatest figure and may cause them to fall?
sorry.. i just don't know how i feel right now.

@lara-9884 he knew about the rules and if you see his interview on take take take. He was cautious about his shoes and other stuffs, but didn't even think about the jeans and that could be a potential inappropriate dress code.

But they asking him to go back, change his pants and then again come back to play another round, that is what triggered him.
And i guess it has happened for good.

Really? Why should he have special privileges? What is the problem in wearing proper suit to an official game?
In Wimbledon they don’t even allow spectators inside if they don’t adhere to a specific dress code. Players can be thrown out if they wear anything not white.
There are restaurants in the world that don’t allow people in if they don’t adhere to specific dress codes.
Why would an international game event be questioned if they ask players to have a dress code? It’s such a minor thing. Magnus may be greatest chess player ever but if he can’t agree to bare minimums it’s not a good thing and shows he is getting arrogant and doesn’t care about basic things. michael jordan was fined $5000 per game for wearing his personal "shoes" instead of whatever they wanted. They could've just fined him. I feel that if they fine is a win-win situation.
Magnus gets to bend rules, fide makes more money. People can write articles how magnus gets fined... Sponsors are happy cuz of the attention it brings to watch the next livestream.
Just a SIMPLE "fine" of x amount of dollars would've solved the issue and things wouldn't blow up. And not ban him to play round 9 instead. Imagine spending your "free time" in between rounds, to go get a taxi, go to hotel, change (assuming he did bring) and then get taxi back to make it in time to play the next round.
Time wise very stressful, adding the possible embarrassing moment if he forgot to bring the necessary outfit for the game. And on top of that that freestyle drama chess.
from magnus point of view, probably embarrassing to ask someone to borrow a pair of pants.

The rules are clear. Magnus knew the rules from the beginning. Casual clothes are not allowed. Whether the rules should be revised, it's another story.
