Was it pretty? Not really. Is this version of Hans more palatable? Absolutely. He’s getting older. With age comes wisdom. Hans will learn to pick his battles more wisely in the future.
I hope FIDE takes note of what's he's saying. Making all the Candidate feeder tournaments open tournaments is a very interesting idea. Rating decay also quite brilliant, since it gives an incentive to play. Without it, there's an incentive to avoid playing if you're highly rated. Heck, maybe the rating the top players loses incrementally goes to everyone else? So that if top players do nothing, they reduce and others are boosted - allowing chess ELO to to be a real relativistic measure of merit.
@@Phurngirathaana nice idea! if Magnus and co. go off and make esports money with the top guys, it won't serve wider chess community well. FIDE needs to invest in the future by ensuring meritocracy and also doing more to get sponsors and ensuring that money trickles down. Their goal should be that every GM (at least) can make a good living through playing competitively, without having supplement with coaching or courses.
100% agree. Every major chess tournament and world championship should have qualifiers to give ANYONE that plays chess a chance to win. The systems in place right now are horrendous.
Magnus definitely expected fide to be more flexible towards him as they were used to be less strict to the top players. Cuz he mentioned that he forgot about the dress code and wanted to change tomorrow. But fide decided to treat everyone equally which is a good thing. But the fact is that players on the lower boards also violated the dress code, Hikaru's opponent had sneakers on which is also banned, but it was ignored by fide. Anyways these types of incidents aren't good for chess overall.
i get it , but magnus has been playing these fide events for more than a decade and abiding rules each time , and is very well aware of rules , but suddenly he has problems , seems its planned by magnus and as he wanted general dumb fanboys are after fide

@parthsavyasachi9348that's blatantly untrue and even hans has admitted it. The only cheating scandal that he was found innocent in was the one that started the butt plug memes.
After seeing how Magnus throws tantrums while losing, I am seriously starting to think Hans did not cheat against Magnus. It's just that Magnus cannot tolerate losses and rage quit back then as well.

Some solid points, but I don't agree regarding the Candidates: 5 Spots are given to World Cup and Grand Swiss where (at least) all GMs can compete in a system with high variance. This has led to players like Abasov and Alekseenko participating in the candidates, who expectedly could not keep up in the candidates at all. I don't think the challenger should be decided by "who can beat this 2680 player twice". Spot on regarding the rating delay though.
If I understand correctly, Hans' criticism of the FIDE circuit is different from Magnus'? Hans wants a merit based system whereas Magnus wants better tests of a player's skill?
Hans wants more opportunities for players to rise through the ranks, especially at near elite level where he is. I never noticed Magnus was much interested in developing non-elite players, except picking successors and pushing them through
People are so easily manipulated by words... You realize he just said Magnus planned the whole thing, right? He's still the petty little shit that he is. He just learned how to act and cover it up better. Just like politicians. Remember this: words are empty and meaningless.
It is not because the color of the cotton pants are not blue they are not jeans you know. Edit: Also, Hans has a great point when saying that big chess tournaments that count toward being qualified for the World Chess Championship should be open and not invitational as many strong GMs are never invited because they are not popular. That would remove FIDE's control on selecting who should be the next WCC.
My prediction is Hans actually becomes the Blitz champion. He actually ended up with a decent score in the rapid and he is signficantly stronger in blitz. He is definitely one of the favorites. Plus, unlike many of these top guys, he is very well tested in open tournaments. Hes been winning them. Some of the top guys tend to struggle when they arent facing the usual invite only guys. We've even seen that in this recent rapid.
im confused, so everyone's saying that it's impossible to just wear jeans to a tournament when Ian also wore illegal clothing, and from Hikaru so did him and Fabi in 2022 like were they also trying to start a fashion statement lol?
I think they fined Ian for not abiding by the dress code and afterwards he was willing to comply. Magnus was given the time to change and allowing him to bypass the rules would make it feel unfair to the arbiter I imagine. Also in past years they didn't enforce rules as much but as the head of fide said in an interview they made the dress code more lenient and made it clear they were gonna follow the somewhat changed dress code more strictly this year. I don't think the rule itself makes a lot of sense but if u do have a dress code and u have been enforcing it on other players I do understand not wanting to make an exception for the biggest player in ur tournament as that can be seen as showing favoritism.
@@natsutabbaa5324 Literally the day after the controversy Hikaru played against a guy who was wearing sneakers, which is also not allowed, and nothing was said of it. If it were Hikaru wearing sneakers, there's a high chance he would have been warned and made to change. Tons of players aren't complying with the dress code entirely, it is selectively enforced upon only the top players, basically done so in a political manner, and is particularly being done so with the advent of this new league that is a threat to FIDE and which they are actively trying to interfere with the success of. That is the bigger issue at play.
@@Scarmiglione379 I mean for one it's quite possible that person did get into trouble for the sneakers after the match but even if he did you wouldn't hear about it cause he isn't as well known. Also the head of fide did say that they have also been taking action on lesser known players. A couple of people being unnoticed doesn't necessarily mean they are being biased. There are way more eyes on the bigger players so obviously them breaking the rules will be a lot more noticeable. And I don't think it's just because of the new world tournament event Carlsen is a part of because if so they wouldn't have had to fine Ian who afaik isn't evolved in this drama. If anything I think Carlsen might have been frustrated with fide not wanting another world championship event which lead to him not wanting to comply with the rules even though he had all the chances too.

So many good points! But the problem with huge bureaucratic mammoth like FIDE - it's unresponsiveness and corruption hence no quick changes whatever sensible they are
I think the main point is ofcourse every tournament is sponsored without that fide can't do anything but magnus can attract the most eyeballs and investors, in his tweet Mr beast( biggest youtuber) reacts , Elon Musk mention his name time after time, he with other partner gather 12 million dollar without him fide manage to attach Google but prize fund wise there's no contribution, they have to rely on freedom corp in each and every tournament that's why prize fund is not up to the mark chess players deserves more, apart from top 20 guys others struggle to survive just by playing chess
That too was sponsored by a trillion dollar company. Viewership was at all time high. Magnus and his fans should understand that popularity of chess will grow with or without him.

@Ankit-u2v He is the GOAT no doubt. But that has nothing to do with viewership or popularity of game. His presence would attract more viewership but his absence won't matter as well. Happened with Fischer and later Kasparov who thought chess is nothing without them. But history repeats.
I think he's kind of waiting for what Magnus decides to build which is probably part of why he was so vocal about what he thanks a world championship competition should be. If Magnus creates or supports a system with more open qualifiers that reduces barrier of entry for younger and financially disadvantaged players then he will probably support it as well. If it's something with a lot of the same structural problems but just a cooler dress code then he will probably be critical. I think it's clear that Hans is starting to mature a lot as person compared to previous times we've seen him.
I dont think Magnus left because of his performance, but i 100% agree he wanted to take a stab at FIDE. And it's well deserved. FIDE needs to make some serious changes in marketing, promotion, play rules, and more. Magnus has been very vocal about his disappointment with FIDE and their regulations for a long time, so when they decide to be totalitarian about clothes, sure it'd be an easy fix, but it's overstepping, and he knew it, we all knew it, so he seized the opportunity to highlight it
I do like the point regarding players not playing enough games per year. I totality agree that rating should be lost automatically for not playing enough games. This would mean that top players would have to play more events to maintain ratings and therefore qualifications on said rating for specific tournament qualification for the WCC cycle.
Rating decay and more open qualifier spots for freestyle. I completely agree. Except for Magnus, Fabi, Gukesh and maybe Hikaru & Nepo too, nobody deserves a direct spot.
I don't necessarily agree with his take on the Magnus drama but it's nice to see Hans clearly more chilled out in this setting and getting to give quite an eloquent and rational point of view.

When I first got into chess in the 20-teens, Hikaru was the defacto badboy. He was considered obnoxious until he started streaming regularly, and people could finally see his full personality on display. Can't judge a guy just based upon one side of them. Sure, Hans was pretty obnoxious at times but I could still see his intelligence and humor at the same time (even during previous scandals).
@@brandondaniels9471 That is a bit of a paradox, you get a lot of attention by being involved in drama but drama also brings the wrong attention in a way. I don't defend Hans. He's not Kramnik unhinged, but he's still pretty damn unhinged.
An intelligent person who cheated online when he was 16 I repeat 16,people at 16 have enough brain cells to know what is wrong an what is right.

Hans has spoken some stupid stuff definitely but he sometimes makes a lot of sense and that hate he received without any proof of it was just a bunch of fanbois being fanbois.
Magnus just loves drama. Wouldn’t say it is wrong or right tho- coz from perspective of Magnus- he has achieved lots of things in chess. All he needs now is some extreme fame and drama is definitely increasing his fame- Elon and Mr Beast too tweeted savage or smth. Hans' points come across so much better when he's not making accusations. Fun guy to watch every time tho.
He has solid points. Even in his accusations. Whether you agree with him or not. There were unfair actions taken against him after Sinquefield. It’s his livelihood. He had to fight for it. Was it pretty? Not really. Is this version of Hans more palatable? Absolutely. He’s getting older. With age comes wisdom. Hans will learn to pick his battles more wisely in the future.

Okay, Hans is starting to grow on me
Because he's starting to grow up.
That's what she said
I hope FIDE takes note of what's he's saying.
I'd say it's time to implement a system similar to FIFA's. Chess rating could be based on the games you have played over the last X years
Hold 4 grandswiss tournaments a year !

This was great to watch. Thank you both for such a good interview

I’m a minute in. This interview has the feel of an estranged cousin popping in for Thanksgiving dinner unannounced.
@ Well he might have intentions but he never actually cared about any rules outside of chess.
Him arriving late at events became a popular meme. He also quit tournament before. So it’s actually nothing new for him as he said he’s too old to care now.
The top players are supposed to set an example, right?

Magnus absolutely had ample time to change.
He just didn't care to.
We don't really know if there was time, and he's in his 30s, not only about time but that humiliation grows in mind and hinders the game thereafter, so he didn't find any point continuing!

Besides, Nepo had previously been fined in the same tournament, and had changed accordingly.

It was not worth the effort since he was anyways losing the title. Might as well exit creating controversy which will help him in his agenda of setting up alternate organization. It's a win win situation for him. Lost the title but got the sympathy.
They fined him ($200). And It was ok for Magnus. He don't complain and said that would wear the "chess panties" next day. It was not enough for FIDE. The fine and the agreement of Magnus was already ok. They went too far.
Also, I'm pretty sure he could've just told someone he needed the pants and there would be people lining up to fetch one

Some solid points, but I don't agree regarding the Candidates: 5 Spots are given to World Cup and Grand Swiss where (at least) all GMs can compete in a system with high variance.

O, man. Hans interviews are the best!
Like him or not, he is NOT dumb. Newfound respect now. He is clearly growing, after a gigantic storm..
Hans never disappoint us with his thought
im confused, so everyone's saying that it's impossible to just wear jeans to a tournament
when Ian also wore illegal clothing, and from Hikaru so did him and Fabi in 2022
like were they also trying to start a fashion statement lol?
illegal clothing? bro you're just weird
It's not about coming in wearing the wrong outfit , it's about refusing to correct it. It's so obviously staged that even magnus struggled to make a coherent story ..." I was out for a team meeting , came home and put on a shirt " so he deliberately did not put on the correct pants...it's just giga levels of immaturity..." Can't be arsed to put on a pants coz he probably didn't have the time to do it? " ...well could have arrived late ..it's not like he's not done that before.
I like this version of Hans even more. Speaks great and is a great player as well.

Wc was sponsored even when magnus was not playing in it
I think the main point is ofcourse every tournament is sponsored without that fide can't do anything but magnus can attract the most eyeballs and investors, in his tweet Mr beast( biggest youtuber) reacts , Elon Musk mention his name time after time, he with other partner gather 12 million dollar without him fide manage to attach Google but prize fund wise there's no contribution, they have to rely on freedom corp in each and every tournament that's why prize fund is not up to the mark chess players deserves more, apart from top 20 guys others struggle to survive just by playing chess

Hans secretly likes Magnus' rebellion... nice interview!
Never been a fan of this guy but he is just spitting facts the whole time here. Ageee with every single word he said
Hans sounds more sensible than Hikaru
Which is not too difficult in this particular instance tbh.
@TitusvonthatsderMalsburg that is because Hikaru will do whatever Magnus say
