Yeah I think the problems not so much the pairing as it is the fact that 8 people advance - these things cant go together. The swiss system is fine to decide one winner but in this format, it would be better to draw the matches based on seeds beforehand . If there was an outright winner in 13 games, then we wouldn't have seen 7/8 5 move draws on the top 4 boards in the last 2 rounds. I dont know what Naroditsky was doing though, a draw basically eliminated him yet he still took it without even thinking about playing a proper game - the tiebreak system is a mess too, an SB score (the sum of the scores of your opponents that you beat + half the scores of your opponents that you drew with) would make much more sense than whatever this random system is
This format was TERRIBLE in my opinion. 188 players and 180 of them going home after only 13 games is terrible treatment of the many players that never would have a chance at being the last 8. But that is as expected from FIDE that care very little about the players that are below top 20 in the world. The old format was way better and I totally agree that is should be at least 21 games and even better 23-25 games in my opinion. It was also obvious from the interview that Levi had with Magnus that Magnus prefers the old format as well.
@@songoku-jx3cb . Given how much prep players do these days classical matches need to be reduced to either 60mins + 30mins or 90 minutes per side and two games per day. That way players can play more games in less time. Imagine a world classical championship match of 18-20 games done over the span of two weeks or less. It would be a lot more difficult to draw every game and force tie breaks as they do now and the match wouldn't drag on for 3 or more weeks.
@@MrSupernova111 yeah but the problem with 90 minutes is the match will go heavily in the favour of the player with white . could it be hikaru is not as used to otb as he's on digital? not to say he's not used to otb, but he's REALLY used to digital, and being used to something makes the brain process faster/better, no?
That's what I am thinking too. Sometimes playing too much digital can affect your performance in otb. I played otb recently and I didn't look anything near my performance in digital but with time, I sort of got used to it. I think that's why he had a slow start. But in a high stakes tournament, it becomes difficult with the nerves and tension. But he is a professional and he should prepare for otb chess and play for at least a week to acclimatize to otb. Common
Yeah, many people don't realize how much of a difference playing otb vs online is. Looking at a board vs a screen can help/hinder your play. Playing with a mouse feels very different. Even if you are a very good chess player, these changes take some time to adjust to in order to play at your best. Hikaru has played a lot online, way more than otb in recent years. It can go both ways. He might not be used to playing blitz otb.
Magnus is more concerned about the dress code than in promoting the game to attract bigger sponsors. This is what happens when players think they're above the game itself. They step on their own toes. Lots of examples of this arrogant behavior in chess.

There is a bitter war brewing between Hikaru , Magnus and promoters of free style chess on one side and FIDE on the other . Dubov pulling his stunt , Jeansgate are all symptoms of this (largely hidden from the public eye) war. Players are going to get caught in the middle . This may lead to surge in chess popularity or implode spectacularly . Only time will tell .
Blitz is a young man’s game. Chess overall is, but especially rapid time formats favour younger players, 100%
Results don't really show that. And young players are often good at calculation, which is actually more important in longer time-controls.
I thinks Big brother make duvob an offerd, thinks that Magnus vs Hans sells more, also jeans gambit decline second day
16:45 Hikaru admits himself that his chess is interesting. Not accusation, just stating facts.
Hi Hikaru,
About the whole Dubov thing: couldn't he have been pressured by Kramnik to not play against Kramnik's protégé?
Thanks for your honest assesment of your performances Hikaru! You can still improve! Good luck and keep playing!
more and more gm are getting bolder and speaking more, new wings, interesting to see the future after the Magnus era.
take a shot evertime hikaru says "i mean"
Yeah I mean, at the end of the day, it is what it is, it is what it is. No I mean, what I would say is, it is what it is. So yeah.
So Dubov sold his game to Hanz. Bad bad bad
He definitely didn't oversleep the interview with Levi made me 100% certain of that. Because Levi asked if he was paired against Hans in the quarter final would he play ? and Dubov yes if i don't oversleep again i will play.
that doesnt confirm anything, how your train of logic led to that is "impressive"
That sounds more like a joke to me?
Don't be a stranger
He made it vague enough where it couldve been a either a joke about a weird situation or a hint that he wont play
You're dumb dumb, but you think you're smart. Many such cases
could it be hikaru is not as used to otb as he's on digital? not to say he's not used to otb, but he's REALLY used to digital, and being used to something makes the brain process faster/better, no?
I'm just a mediocre player and can totally vouch for that,it really slows me down when I switch from digital to otb 😅
It’s structured to benefit Magnus the most and he doesn’t appreciate it - shocked, I’m just shocked! 🤣🙄
Lol
More conspiracy lol 😂
Magnus is more concerned about the dress code than in promoting the game to attract bigger sponsors. This is what happens when players think they're above the game itself. They step on their own toes. Lots of examples of this arrogant behavior in chess.
@@MrSupernova111 hes literally standing up for freestyle chess for attraction of chess
@nova190-u3c Also he just inked another modeling gig with G-Star Raw, so check and mate, with a nice check coming.
Hikaru
When you start to spent too much time on 2 dimensional interface (comp chess) the spatial cognitive abilities for same puzzle's 3 D space start to get decline with age .This is Conditioned effect. Here Online Chess vs OTB.
I completely agree, this is not helping him.
Dubov took a quick walk to a russian restaurant to get beef sandwich
Seems he's got a beef... as the idiom goes.
Hikaru "yeah I mean" Nakamura
Hikaru "I don't really care" Nakamura
Him saying he saw the position wrong reminds me of when I was in Vegas playing blackjack. One time, I asked for the dealer to split thinking I had a certain pair of cards. I had a completely different matching pair. The dealer laughed, and I knew better than to split the pair in front of me. Its like they were swapped without me noticing. Idk if it was nervousness or what! Kinda crazy
That isn't what don't be a stranger means dawg
Ding liren is the best😊 0:23 ❤❤❤❤
he was not mentioned at this timestamp at all and you are a bot
@@RaphaelCosteau dude you are a bot. he is refering how ding defended crazy good against gukesh in low time in some games and how hikaru was criticising ding and now finding out it is not easy to perform otb
@@RaphaelCosteauYou are not enough of a chess nerd to know what he meant.
@@knowledgeablechad not the same, i mean hikaru drew those positions against 3200 stockfish (multiple drawn games) just to show how simple it was so I think he was right to criticize how ding played...
I'm getting tired of Dubov saying "everyone who isn't stupid knows what happened".
Now Hikaru is saying: "you know what happened, he didn't over sleep".
OK...
I'm stupid.
I don't know what happened.
Explain it to me.
Magnus accused Hans of cheating a while back. He couldn't prove it so it ended up being a nothing burger whoever they still don't like Hans. Dubov is close with Magnus and now years later forfeited his game on purpose to make a statement(that he won't play with an alleged cheater).
Dubov didn’t want to play against Hans because he’s convinced Hans is a cheater. He tried to make a statement by refusing to compete but framed it as "I overslept," probably to avoid consequences from FIDE or something along those lines.
I think FIDE need to install a CCTV Camera on each player room so that they will know if Dubov really over sleep
@@shauryasuri3653do u realize thats hans admit that he did cheat and then just defened himself by saying he didnt cheat in that especific game vs magnus i mean in ANY other sport hans wouldnt be allowed to play EVER again in any official tournoument
@@JoaoSousa-fn5gywhat a manipulator you are. He admitted to using an engine online when he was a teenager, never cheated otb and you have to be ill intended to say he cheats. Do better.
Dubov has also admitted to using engines online. Look it up.
@10:27 "Don't be a stranger" - that doesn't mean what Hikaru thinks it means!
So when will Hikaru win any of those world championships or even candidates? World cup, World Classic, Rapid, Blitz championship. I mean anything
He already did, he is World Fischer Random Champion.
Well,he's in his mid 30s,I'm no expert but from my understanding of chess your peak is usually around 25-30?!
@@zezeti2246 many chess players actually peaked in their 40s
Freestyle??? Just call it what it is Fischer random!! Magnus dislikes Fischer for evny reasons and are doing all he can to talk the GOAT down.
Dubov ducked smoke with Hans. Punk move. He's not standing on morals; he's being a coward.
The problem was not the time in my opinion. The problem was openings. A lot of time he was worse from the start/middlegame
Openings have been the weakest point of naka for all his career as well as mental weakness)
These interviewers are special, let me put it like that.
Dubov passed out when Hans released his haoshoku haki
Hikaru, you placed #21! You're only a point down from top 8! You're incredible. Please keep shining!
Why he keeps winning tilted Tuesdays he might cheat 😂
he was 45th in rapid, dude glazing magnus over jeangate, talking about how fide is doomed meanwhile getting absolutely washed by 2500s, i think losing you and magnus will be fine mate.
21 and 45 not the greatest for someone proclaimed to be "the best" online and a top 2-3 favorite otb... plus hate to say it, but he lost early and got easier pairings the rest of the way
Interview with magnus by levy,
Magnus said he doesn't agree with the new format and the 21 game format favored him more
Was the format change really at the request of Carlsen??? I got no idea, but he usually have bad starts at tournaments, and this favors those with good starts. It also filters out so many players early on, when he has always seen more games as better to determine the best.
Dubov drank too much and then smoked too many cigarettes
"cigarettes" 😂
dubov try not to throw away world blitz second year in a row
"the format sucked", I would say that too if I got totally merked by full time plumbers
He said it before the tournament too.
@@bipolarminddroppings yeah I would say that too if I didn't have time to put effort in as I was too busy having my back blown out by Magnus.
Still format is bad it should be 21 games
@@gredaxdo me next!
As Anish said and Magnus agreed that players are biased towards format that suits them at that point so no point of asking suggestions for format for players
Dubov let Hans qualify at his own and possibly Naroditsky’s expense. Really punishes HN to get a free point.
It’s principle to refuse to play a cheater, but it’s something else to refuse to play a cheater when you’re very certain they’re not going to cheat that particular game. If you’re really that anti cheating, you’d take that opportunity to crush the cheater, but why would you still refuse to play? 4 words: what, if, I, lose?
2:16 "i saw someone mention it" ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
BRO HOW COULD SOMEONE MENTION SOMETHING THAT WAS IN YOUR MIND
I also don't understand why FIDE squeezes two of the most pretigious tournaments exactly in the holidays time where nobody really wants to travel and just stay at home to be with their loved ones, insanely poor organization in all aspects
just an idea - maybe look into meditation or something like that to train ones head to stay clear and calm. you have all the knowledge and skill. it is still fun to watch you and i really enjoy your game analysis
Why do these Hukaru interviews on stream after any event feel like someone died
he's obviously very exhausted
Coz money?
Could you imagine all these chess players bunking up and sharing the cost of a massive Airbnb rental. They could stream a drunk chess tournament.
What are some good chess drinking games?
When i saw the title i laughed so hard my wife asked me what the issue was. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
"It's to try and favor magnus" what is bro on about???
Obviously easier for Magnus to win mini matches than in a 200 players swiss.
Pac I mean he has 7 blitz champs also this format is harder for him he even said it since he has to have a good start which he usually does not have
@@breh7128 Yeah, I disagree with him. There is much more variance in a 200 players Swiss tournament, than if he can deal with 3 good players one by one.
Hikaru: I might be able to help you with your problem when your time gets to five seconds. Ask your step Dad on how to reach me.
I would love to see Hikaru play the US Championship, the Olympiad, and the World Championship cycle. After that , he can do what he wants. Just a fan's opinion.
Hikaru is becoming Kramnik at this point. LMAO
FINALLY YOU SAID... THIS FORMAT IS MADE FOR MAGNUS
It's hard to disagree with Hikaru's own feelings, so I'm sorry if this opinion seems disrespectful, but I think Hikaru thinks too much about age. Of course it's a thing, but more about motivation and the will of improve. Maybe is some bias that comes from when he was younger. Sasha is older, Gelfand, Lenier... I think the main problem manifested in this tournament can be solved, is about mental state, overthinking. When he plays online, he usually premoves without second guessing how to respond to an expected move. He never second-guesses his calculations, even if he blunders some time scrambles against players with great tactical awaresness.
Playing less over the board surely doesn't help, I hope he can find peace in the Freestyle, he's still the FIDE World Chess960 Champion!
Will be nice to watch a boxing - chess match between Dubov and Hans!
Problem with freestyle is, its for that 0.1% Super GMs and alienate whole audience. General Audience doesnt have interest which they cant play and its a board game
If hes gonna cry like this after a loss, dont do the interview.
Why interview someone who doesn't want to answer
10:25 hikaru misusing dont be a stranger saying lol
I don’t believe him either , I suspect no one was supposed to.Avoids censure from Fide by outright saying that he didn’t want to play Hans because of the cheating controversy
If top experinced GMs agree on problems with FIDE and Hans, they probably arent wrong
😂😂😂
Dubov played marvel rivals all night 😂
Disappointing that Hikaru literally had "better" or "much better" positions in just about every match and couldn't convert. He'll recover... he is also not as bad in low time moments as he thinks. Anyway... looking forward to watching Hikaru streaming instead of the drugged interviews :P
Danya 9th so out of the day 2? Yeah that pisses me off. I was rooting for Danya to win. Especially because of all the bullshit he's gone through this past year. He had a great tournament reagardless, hopefully it gives danya some peace of mind and he can move forward and not let the bullshit accusations affect his mental health anymore. I hope he realises that he could become the Fide world champion on all formats and people like Kramnik would try to drag his name in dirt.
