these fx chips are like the rotary engine equivalents in the cpu space: can "rev" high, overall good HP figures (multi core perf) but not a whole lot of torque (single core perf) if tweaked properly you can get good fun out of it.

My 775, (thanks to Phil's tutorials on updating bios code) is humming right along and is my secondary daily + light gaming machine. When my budget increases in the near future I plan on building a a full Ryzen system with Linux and Windows running strictly in a VM. So I can work and play on the same machine. I built a FX system (8350) earlier in the year and it's turned into one of my favorite systems to use when streaming PC games that are more than a few years old. It handles them well, even up to stuff like DOOM 2016 that you mentioned. It makes for a great indie game or emulation box as well (really surprised at how well this thing handles Dreamcast!), and it's also a strong box for stuff like classic FPS source ports and mods (Doom, Quake, Blood, etc). For people that like to have various generations of hardware built and ready to go for one reason or another, it can be worth having one of these around.

Feels like AMD got blamed for people not doing their research and blaming them for trying different CPU designs that did not always work out as the best option in hindsight. I mean I don't recall Intel facing a lawsuit for the mess that was the pentium D.

@AleksSDF Indeed. Other CPU's might be faster, but if you have a good board with M.2 SSD and enough RAM, a FX-8350 still makes a nice system for work or play.
I have mine cooled with a 240mm AIO, so it also runs very quiet. That is the only downside, the FX boxed coolers sound like jet engines when they ramp up. And you need to have beefy VRMs on the board. A cheap AM3 board will barely handle the FX-6300, let alone the 8350. I would reccomend getting a board that is rated to support the FX-9590 with 220W. Even if you only get the 8350, you will have more headroom.

    Last year.
I built a second budget gaming PC for my living room. I was going to order a second FX-6300 but bought the FX-8320 instead. As Newegg had it on a weekly sale for about the same price.
I swapped out the 6300 for the 8320 on my primary PC.
I put that 6300 in that second budget build.

Well if it has drivers support then theres no problem. Still you wont see any difference in performance with anything that runs on XP. From that point of view it becomes kind of a waste, same as if you had windows 95 support too. I doubt space cadet running at 9001 fps would feel any different xD

Now that i think about it a core 2 quad is overkill. You can do win7 no problem on one of those. Core 2 duo @ 3.5GHz should run better on XP wich wasnt optimized for multi core cpus nor had any software that used more than 2.

I decided to upgrade the CPU from an FX-6100 to an FX-6300 because I saw that two people had done so with the Asrock 770 Extreme 3 and posted to userbenchmark. With the knowledge that the CPU would work, I went hunting for one at a sane price on eBay. I determined I would not pay over $35 including shipping, and finally got one.
Why the FX-6300? It's the fastest 95W TDP six core AM3+ CPU that was made.
After running all these benchmark tests (I also ran SiSoft Sandra's CPU tests, which took forever and the report files are large so not included here) I found that for the $35 I got a decent speed boost overall. Especially surprising was the *very* good video and RAM performance improvement. Apparently the FX-6100 was being a bottleneck.
Except for the FX-6100 userbenchmark test, the only hardware changed was the CPU. I had a different hard drive configuration for the old userbenchmark test, which should not have an impact on anything directly related to the CPU change.
The one area that saw next to zero improvement is HEVC or x265 video encoding. Only single digit frames per second faster in that benchmark. Real use with VidCoder has been a bit better. That's the one aspect I was hoping for significant improvement but it's only about as much better at it than the FX-6100 was over a Phenom II x4.
Then after posting the userbenchmark scores, I saw there's one peron who posted a test on this board with an FX-8320. This board isn't supposed to support 8 core CPUS! If I wanted to burn the extra electrons I likely could have gone for the fastest 8 core 125W TDP FX-8370 CPU. www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/7804069

Can you use the 40x40mm if it is slightly too large, and not worry about the overhang? I would imagine it's the size to use on Ryzen. Is that correct? The FX6300 OC'd is doing well in the PC I gave my Dad for gaming. Running with a GTX 980 for 1080p 60hz, it's doing well. I built two of them years ago for my parents, because we all wanted to play co-op games, and they needed PC's. They have served us well. Borderlands, CoD, and L4D series all easily run locked on their monitors refresh rate. I have a soft spot as well for them.

I got the FX 8350 at the same time as yours simply because Intel platform was too expensive back then. Now I am on Ryzen 3 platform, massive upgrade.

Even being an old processor, If you are like me, a player who only cares about the campaign and 1080p60 FPS, this setup would still offer enough juice.

Hey Phil! I loved the video. I’m running an FX 8350 and was curious how this chip ran. But there’s something else I want to ask...
I’ve loved computers for years, eventually taking them apart myself and figuring out their parts, and how they work. But there’s still so much more I want to learn! It just seems like so much though. Is there anything you can recommend to start taking steps to get where you are with your knowledge of hardware and the ins and outs?
I really appreciate any feedback sir. Cheers!

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  5 лет назад

Well how do you nest learn? Some people do it from books, some from watching videos, like I do, others learn when working with other people. I think watching RUclips videos, especially build guides, can be very helpful.

As one who also play with retro hardware. I think video decoding test is also a fun thing to do. Now the vp9 and hevc video on RUclips demands a lot of cpu power. Without a fairly recent video card (nvidia 10 series), sometimes these cpu struggles even at 720p.

My son's 2nd cpu / 2nd build I did for him. Now I have been waiting to hear a good price on a motherboard and I see some good deals there even when converted to Canadian. A nice backup motherboard for my son's pc or if I find the right priced cpu anywhere it would be good for just a project for me in 2019. I really though need some socket 775 motherboards cheap as I have 2 cpus sitting around doing nothing that I want in builds. Now back to the AMD boards on Aliexpress I think I'd look at a Gigabyte board since I had so much luck with these for so many builds and heck there are some really affordable ones. Likely will try to get the same model my son has as I know it works well. LOL!

I used the FX6300 for quite a few builds back in the day - even back then it was a good budget CPU. Plus it has the advantage of being multiplier unlocked if you want to squeeze extra performance out of it.
In my dev job back in 2015-2016, everyone new to the IT department built their own PC - going with the FX6300, I managed to put together a really good dev machine for ~250€. It's very well suited for dev jobs and offers a quick compile time.
A few months later, I upgraded my own gamer PC from core2 to the FX6300 and gave it an R9 270X GPU to go along with it. It took every game I threw at it until the PSU succumbed to the summer heat of 2018.
New PSU installed and GPU upgraded to a GTX1050Ti I got for cheap - it now serves as a linux-based gaming/multimedia PC for the living room. And yes, it still goes strong until I throw VR games at it.
It's still an excellent base for 60Hz non-VR gaming machine in 2019 - I'll happily vouch for that :)

I picked up a pair of 6300's Mounted on the exact motherboard your using 40 dollars each with the processor.. Sadly No IO shields.. (Found them on Ebay for around 7 dollars for two. Took three weeks to arrive) I Built two full systems with them. One ATX case and one MATX... First thing I ran into was the lack of Fan headers.. Had to use a Fan splitter on the single one on the Motherboard with extentions for the ATX case. I ended up using a Small SSD on each for the Operating system and a 500 or 1TB drive for the rest of the data. GTX 950 cards are dirt cheap so I picked up two of them for under 100 dollars.. They both run great and you can do Pub G and Players unknown on them just fine with high settings.. World of tanks does great also. (And Yes its wise to update the bios on the boards!) You also can add USB 3.0 with a card. They run about 20 dollars and make it nice with cases with the 3.0 plugs.

I used to use an FX-4300 as my main system with a RX 480. Ran NuDoom and Wolfenstein on it great. I ultimately had to update because of Guild wars 2.
I was recently looking at building an AM3 Athlon X2 280 for an XP system. They are only 65w, dual core, and still use the Phenom II core. The problem was BIOS support. Many of the AM3 motherboards didn't ever get a chip update considering it came out several years after many AM3 boards were maintained. Might be worth looking at the AM3 as a competitor with the 755 platform more than the Sandybridge+ cores.

Even a low end AM4 chip will outrun it in my opinion, having DDR4 memory in my opinion is a huge factor. Could you test it against a 200GE? I had an FX6300 in my gaming system and it did work but when I upgraded to Ryzen I never looked back . Thanks for a great video

I've had this CPU. Upgraded it to 8350 ($45) this spring.
Try to OC CPU-NB to 2400-2600 MHz (adding +0.08-0.1V helps) and RAM to at least 1866 (and more, if you can, but this may require increasing BCLK)
There should be much less framedrops and freezes with fast RAM and CPU-NB (L3 cache and RAM controllers work at CPU-NB frequency)
If you're increasing BCLK keep in mind that Turbo Core multiplier does not work on this motherboard. It does not apply and stays default even when explicitly set in BIOS.

I to have bought my FX-6300 used for $30 back in early 2015 because it had a few bent pins and was just sitting in the buyer's cabinet. This was quite the upgrade for my AM3+ system that was utilizing an AMD Athlon II X4 620 CPU and I have used the 6300 up until March of this year when I finally decided to do a complete rebuild centered around a Ryzen 5 2400G processor as I didn't want to reuse the Radeon HD 6970 that was in the older build.
