    Very interesting video! As someone that owns 6 FX chips (8320, 8150, 6300, 6100, 4300 and 4100), i believe you can extract some extra performance even with a basic motherboard like yours.
    1-FX is massively overvolted and too power hungry at stock, so you can use the stock voltage (around 1.35v) and just up the clock speed, in fact my 6300 does 4.3 GHz using the stock voltage, a whooping 800 MHz boost.
    2-Use medium CPU LLC with Gigabyte boards
    3-A fan behind the motherboard does wonders to the AM3+ platform, or a small 40-80mm fan blowing air between the VRM and the NB, (i personaly use the later).
    4-If you are going to get a better motherboard i would avoid Asus for two reason: One is that the motherboard "CPU" temperature, often refered as "socket" temperatures are HIGH, even on 990X/990FX boards. Two, you can't run 1 core per module on R2.0 boards. The Gigabyte 970 UD3P motherboard seems to be the best bang for the buck using this platform, it has the powerful VRM of the 990FXA but its far cheaper thanks to the 970 chipset. Btw 990 boards are not that useful, unless you like crazy setups running CrossfireX or SLi like me.
    Hope i helped with this comments, keep up with the good work!

      Appreciate the tips! Was hoping for some feedback like this as I'd love to revisit this CPU with some more proper hardware 👍 On this board I had to dial in the voltage to 1.4v to get it stable at 4.2GHz, I felt the increase was too underwhelming to include in this video as I think I could get a LOT more out of this chip with a higher end board.

    • @Brazkainetsb
      @Brazkainetsb 11 месяцев назад

      @@pankoza2 That is a pretty neat board! You choosed wisely. It indeed supports Crossfire/Sli, but it will be a little slower than the 990FX boards. Your 970 can handle two cards at PCIe 2.0 x8, the 990's on the other hand will run these two cards at PCIe 2.0 x16.

      My advice for him was more about the EVO and PRO boards, althought the CHV and Sabertooth also tend to be a little bit too hot in the "socket".

    I have fond memories of the fx chips. They got me through my college years. Started with an FX-4100 on a tiny 21inch 720p monitor paired with an HD 6870 1GB. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I experienced my first steam summer sale in Summer of 2012 thanks to this build. I would later try upgrading to an FX-8350 unfortunately it did not go as planned. I managed to bend some pins during the install and had to revert to the 4100. Not my finest hour given I was studying IT at the time lol. A friend tried bending the pins back and we did managed to get it into Windows but it kept crashing. I suspect there was still a bent pin we missed. So we just kinda gave up on it.

    If you want help with overclocking, i might be able to help you. i have an FX 6300 that can reach 5 GHz on air using my Sabertooth 990FX 2.0 board.
    Now, there are some use cases where the FX CPUs has a place, and that is beginner friendly overclocking. because on most decent boards, they are fully unlocked to do PCIe, BCLK, NB, HT and MP overclocking, so you can really fine-tune your CPU to your liking. But yeah, those VRMs on most budget boards are probably the reason why you rarely see those around anymore on the used market.

      When I track down a better board I could certainly use some pointers! Been a while since I've done some proper tuning with an FX. And for sure, the fact that the board can't even run 125W CPUs like an FX 8350 is very telling, its pretty much bottom of the barrel for FX boards lol

      @@SPNG i wish i was more local, because i have an ASUS M5A97 R2.0 for reserve that you could’ve loaned. And that board was fairly common for mid end FX builds i believe. That board was capable of 4.6 GHz 1.36V on the 6300 (as far as i am willing to go to save on the VRM a bit). Anything above that does require a bit more airflow than an aircooler around the VRM and NB heatsink.

Recently got deal on a gigabyte 990xa(not fxa) ud3 mobo with 6300 and was positively surprised. Still, it needed additional vrm cooling but got 4.7GHz at 1.4V and it worked definitely better than I remember. Now to complete collection got nice deal on iconic (bad) fx9590 with Asrock 990FX Extreme9 with some back alley tier cooling modifications (additional radiators sticked all over front and back of the vrms).

    I had a 8320e 990FX setup with DDR3 1866 mhz. My logic at the time was that I was getting increased performance in compute tasks at the time of release compared to a locked i5 which is where the price points met. The 2500k was more expensive than the FX series. Though the motherboards we used to push the FX series were too pricey for the gains we recieved. Buying a $200 board to push a $150 CPU for a 10% increase in performance makes no sense to me now but did then. I also got a lot of features going that route though. I was using NVME onboard years before everyone else. Had great onboard audio and networking. I still have the core components. Gonna spend $200 on a case and PSU to put it back together for nostalgia. Slap my old GTX 980 in there and benchmark it for yall.

    The problem with FX wasn't that it was bad, it was that Sandybridge was absolutely legendary. That problem continues to this day, as Sandybridge and Ivybridge are both dirt cheap and absolutely crush FX in pretty much every way.
    I used an FX6300 for a while, and it's a decent chip, but it's pretty telling that a same-time-period quad core from Intel holds up so much better than these 6 - 8 core AMD CPUs.
    The final nail in the coffin for these is Ryzen, since AM4 is still super affordable. I am very happy you can still use AM3 CPU coolers on AM4 because that's what lets me use my favorite CPU cooler of all time in my AM4 build :D

    Overclocking is mandatory.
    And by bus (north bridge 2660/2880 + HT bus 2660/2880, but on some motherboards multipliers don't work, so system BCLK bus overclock is the choise), not by just cranking multiplier.
    And also ram need to be overclocked to 2000+ mhz.
    Then FX thing is just shines, especially 6300/8300/8350/8370.
    Like even today.
    Gameone did video about this, but you need to watch it with subtitles (as video is in Russian language).

    • @aokimikats
      @aokimikats Год назад +1

      @@SPNG nonono!
      In AMD FX processors, the weakest point is the memory subsystem.
      Not the cores! The cores are already powerful by themselves, there is no need to overclock them above 4.2-4.4 GHz and torture the processor.
      The processor's memory subsystem is connected through the north bridge. NB is very slow and is not even in the CPU itself. And if you overclock the CPU and memory, you will be left with a bottleneck in the form of the north bridge, which connects the CPU and memory.
      That's why I strongly recommend overclocking the system with the BCLK system bus. It is set at 200 mhz and multiplied by 11 (I think) by default. You get 2200 mhz.
      And you need a value around 240-260 to maximize the memory subsystem gain (2600+ mhz).
      This is all explained in the video I posted. If you can't watch it with subtitles, I think there is information on the Internet why FX processors should not be overclocked all the way to the top, but should be played with overclocking the memory subsystem. (NB voltage, memory voltage and cpu voltage should be adjusted too, LLC should be disabled, as Cool'n'quiet and other unnecessary features). And remember - when you overclocking system bus - you also overclocking memory and CPU itself. So be careful with multipliers on cpu and memory.
      Thanks for your attention. Advice from Russian overclockers who have been sitting on AMD FX for years (myself too, fx8350 2013-2019).

    • @aokimikats
      @aokimikats Год назад

      This is like problems with lga775 or newest intel 12/13 gen processors - when NB itself isn't on cpu and it could be really slow.
      12-13 gen are stuttering in windows. Like really. Look it up on youtube. This is because those processors are using external north bridge it has such delays. Omg...
      And lga775 has no point of installing ddr3 just because of slow north bridge. It could be done only in case of lack of ram capacity, not overall system speed. (Even if ddr3 is 1333 and ddr2 is just 800 at best).
      And FX is suffering from this too. But in this case it could be actually resolved.

    At that point only the FX 8350 is reasonable to use with modern games in windows 10.
    For a higher end FX build I'd run a GTX 970, 980, 980ti or Titan on the Nvidia side and for amd the r9 290/x maybe the rx 480/580. I'd still say Nvidia will be better for cross compatibility from xp64 to win10.
    As for ram speed I'm pretty sure it can be set to run different ram speed, timings and latency for each operating system.

    There was a China only FX-4200, this is a genuine quad core design featuring 1 core per module so no components are shared, its the best example of what FX could have been capable of if this was continued, it is the gem of the FX lineup. Had no idea that was a thing! I want one now... could be interesting to test it against a comparable i5 of the time to see how it would stack up, I'd imagine floating point performance in particular would be much improved since it has 4 FPUs. Interesting you have the same RAM as well, I got my kit extremely cheap a few years ago and can be pretty decent with some tuning!
      Edit: It seems like that FX 4200 has a 125W TDP, oddly high for a quad core. With that I'd speculate it was originally an 8-core Bulldozer CPU maybe with 1 core disabled in each module?

    The biggest issue with the FX lineup is the false advertisement of these chips. well i do think games are kind of cherrypicked, except for cyberpunk i'd say that there is no game as demanding here... there are no 2023 tittles, and GTAV its just a 2015 game... a game of the era in which Fx cpus were aging but still on sell brand new. In fact, it was only in 2017 the 1st gen Ryzen replaced the 7yr run of the Fx (Bulldozer and Vishera) CPUs
    back into fx6300, the six-core CPU wasn't that good at stock, but had a huge OC potential, so it was a very good bargain to buy it with a 970 board and a Hyper 212, and made it 4.3/4.5ghz which was very doable at safe temps if half decent case cooling was in the mix. That way Fx6300 was superior to 2nd/3rd gen i3 and near low tier i5 in games, but on pair with i5 on some productivity tasks.
    That being said, the Fx cpus didn't do well on Dx11 games, ever, so by 2016 when Vulkan and Dx12 started to became mainstream, the AMD cpus gained kind of a new life as valuable 2nd tier budget CPUs for the used market...
    But now in 2024... i think that ship has sailed... you can't really expect for an Fx6300 to handle a GPU better than a 1050Ti without a lot of bottleneck except on cherrypicked games. At this point the only realistic Fx cpu able to handle some decent gaming is Fx8350/8370 (and the rare and dumb Fx9370 and Fx9590) that can be paired (with some struggle) with GPUs in the order of a GTX 1060 6gb or Rx 580 8gb (but more realistic would be the Rx570 insted).
    I know it since i had my Fx8350 with an Rx 570 4gb (which was replaced at march 2023 with an Rx 580 4gb) and 16gb of ram as main rig since 2017 (originally purchased in 2016 with an R7 370 4gb) up to feb. 2024. So i know in detail how much the Fx8350 barely hold with an Rx 580 using all its 8 cores at 4.0ghz, which was aliviated the times i OCd it to 4.4ghz (good improvement but not worth the risk).
    So... to all looking at an Fx 6300... yes... it will serve you well as an improved ofimatic CPU (way better than Phenoms, Celerons, Pentiums i3 and AMD APUS of the DDR3 era) that might allow some pro-user features like a lot of tabs in Chrome and multitasking... that will allow for modest gaming purposes (some indy, older and MOBA games will run fine with a GTX1050ti) and able to get some upgradepath (Fx8350) but don't expect it to compete with anything in the Ryzen lineup... and by the time an R3 1200 enters the debate with a DDR4 mobo with more modern features like PCIE-3, maybe nvme m.2 slot and the upgrade path for up to Ryzen 5000.. there's no point in this Fx cpu (or anyone to be honest) no matter the prize, since a 1st gen low tier Ryzen with an A320 or even B350 mobo its quite cheap this days

Gonna be taking a look at a bit more than the FX 6300 as well, you may be surprised 👀 The point wasn't to suggest this CPU as a viable budget option for modern games, rather if someone is still hanging onto them these days maybe they should consider waiting a little longer before an upgrade. I still think these CPUs do better than most people think.
