I have an old Craftsman lawn tractor that I put a 730v Kawasaki engine on it. There is a battery meter that starts out with the needle to the right. As the battery charges it goes to the middle (like zero). Suddenly it started working opposite and the motor died starving for gas (coincidence?). I ended up replacing the fuel pump, cleaned the carburetor and now have to keep the fuel line up on top of the engine to keep it running. Crazy. Still not sure if it's electrical, gas or both. I'll be checking voltages tomorrow, thanks to you taking the time to make this video. Awesome.

Regulator regulates the voltage meaning it keeps it at a constant set voltage. A rectifier converts the ac voltage to a dc voltage through a series of internal diodes. Two separate things.. the regulator is the smaller box on the bottom of the rectifier on top..

Very useful. My Snapper RER has a burnt up stator due to my brother getting the wiring all out of whack, but the good news, he gave me the mower. The engine was somewhat seized up but loose now so before I purchase a stator and whatever other parts I may need, I would like to run/test the engine. Since the wiring is not right, can you please help me with the minimum wiring needed just to start it?
I believe there are two wires going too the stator...can I assume I just leave them hanging for now? I took the old stator off already. The coil is there as is it's plug wire. The small wire that plugs to the connector on the coil, I don't know if that's what kills the engine or not...do I plug that one in or leave it off?
Truth is, I tried it already with the wiring configuration I just mentioned, with the small coil wire both plugged and unplugged and got no spark but the battery I was using to straight wire the starter ran dead before I could be certain the spark plug was grounded. So if I get that plug grounded and it still doesn't spark, what next? Did I miss something?
I suppose it is also possible the voltage regulator is fried too but first things first, and I'll wait to hear back about my present wiring scheme. Thanks for any help.

Can i just change the stator and add a rectifier or do i need a flywheel with more magnets in it?

Hey man, I have a tecumseh ov490ea 17.5hp 2006 manufacturer year, it has 2 wires coming off the stator, one had a diode, one does not, I have a bunch of diodes in a kit, but not sure which one to use, I have a oem tecumseh one on order, you know the one 611161 part number, now my question is this, the engine does not have a voltage regulator on it, it came that way, so the diode does the work of the external voltage regulator? Thought I'd ask the small engine pro, as I can't find anything on the tecumseh engine stator testing procedure, or how that system works for charging the battery, any advice would be great tks.

No voltage regulator on a Briggs they have a single diode in the wire coming from the charging side at about 13v DC of the stator that charges all the time at very low amperage unless the mower has electric PTO or blade clutch.
And about 14v AC on the accessories or headlight side

The stator has both fields screwed to the metal on the stator, and that's done at the factory, so a briggs test won't work as the briggs stator is not screwed to the metal on the stator, if that makes any sense at all to you, I have pics if you need them.
