the transition at 3:04 is so amazing and clean.. i remember 2 years ago repeating just that part over and over again like 20000 times.. and here i go again repeating that part again and again... such a nice sound

really musical phrasing from the drummer! (especially from 2:10 till end) I would recommend that all drummers who typically learn a 'fill' and then toss it in anywhere & everywhere without considering context study this video and learn from this guy's measured & tasteful approach to music making.
    Huge fan - thank you

Thanx for commenting Rob. It's a labour of love. You're correct, I s'pose the verses are funk, choruses more jazz inspired by breaking into a swing feel.

Oh my god, so minimalist and smooth... just what I want to sound like. Every fill has a reason.

I wrote this with drums in mind, as it is really just a groove with no lead instrument. Thanx for your kind words.

That was a real pleasure to watch! I'm often frustrated by folk over playing but that was a joy! I agree, very tasteful...

  • @DeanWuksta

kick is on the 1, snare on 3, but the hat and general groove is based on a 16th triplet feel (which is too fast to count out loud at this tempo) . In hip hop at these tempos, they take it to another level and dissect their grooves between a 16th triplet feel and straight 32nd notes, often swapping between the two grooves in the one fill...and they often displace the fill by one 16th note. I did a lesson vid on the half time shuffle a while back. Cheers, Dean

thanx, its a remo ambassodor coated black dot(old). The snare is a maple 13 inch piccolo medium tuned top head, bottom head cranked and just a sm57 on top +eq,compression, reverb. There's a fair amount of the snare sound in the room mic aswell, which is picking up the strainer, I normally use a bottom mic aswell, but didnt this time.

  • @DeanWuksta
    @DeanWuksta  12 лет назад

@colourfulwithaU it's a technique called moellar where the stick rebounds and with a whipping motion, u get extra strokes. You need to keep your hand relaxed, but also maintain control of the stick. You can play the pattern thru brute force, then switch to moellar for a rest, you can get 2, 3, 4 or even continuous hits using the moellar stroke. I'm using moellar for 2 strokes, 2nd stroke has less attack.

I started hittin things round 8.Was doin gigs at 12.I should be a lot better than I am, but I never practised much after 16. You're never too old, just practise the right things, most of the great drummers are peaking at forty or fifty. I know a guy who'd easily kick my ass, he started at 21.

I just wanted to tell you that this is such a nice background music and drumming here. i came back here after 2years(you can ctrl+F and search my name on comments haha). I still remember that when I first listened to this, it sounded awkward so i made some stupid comments, but the more I listen to it the more it sounds perfect. I just came by here from the list of recommended video and this gave me such a great nostalgic feeling I got chills all over my body.Thank you so much for the great music

    Hi Dan,
It is by way of Jeff Porcaro's beat in the song 'Rosanna', which he explains was influenced by the Purdie shuffle and a john Bonham groove.
Although, I don't strictly do the 'bo diddley' part of Jeff's groove, I tend to add a sixteenth feel in places.
    Thanx for the comment! Dean

Very nice with the classic Rosanna Shuffle.
That's a hard groove to play and you handled it with ease.
Great transition into a straight 16th pattern towards the middle too, along with some great great soloing throughout.
    Awesome job!!!

  • @DeanWuksta

it's french grip, I'm using mostly fingers to play the fast shuffle hi hat groove, I often change grip depending on how aggressive or delicate I need to be, thumb will swivel up or down. Check out John Robinsons hi hat technique.

@morphbal1234 good question, the first riff starts on F and the whole thing is quite chromatic, the chorus section starts on Emaj7 changes to min7 every 2nd fret descending down to Amaj7.The middle halt time bit...I cannot remember (it's was just a jam thing I recorded)

as u can see on this clip, I'm not over fussy on type of head. I currently have emperors on all toms, g1 coated snare, pinstripe kick. I use sm57s, Rode, pro tools 7.4, 002 rack...nothing special. I do bus kit mix to it's own compressor before master, I use 2 room ambient mics, and a Rode NT4 stereo mic as overhead.
