  • Do you think fusion food is just something new and flashy? Macanese cuisine, the world’s first fusion food, actually has a history dating back to the 16th century. You can find it in the city of Macau, which was a Portuguese trading post for 400 years. Most classic dishes emerged out of Chinese-Portuguese families’ home cooking. From restaurants dedicated to Macanese food to the local version of Cantonese diners, let’s go on a food crawl to learn more about this sophisticated cuisine with a fascinating history.

Macanese cuisine is mostly homestyle cooking. What’s your favorite home-cooked food🍲?

As an Asian I discovered Portuguese food first by way of Brazil, there so much soul n effort to those braised dishes, it’s like you re eating home safe food. Portuguese food and its communities around the world makes more interesting and so much to discover its should be in a miniseries.

Wow...this was an eye opening video. It broadened my understanding of Macanese food beyond merely Portuguese egg tarts and pork chop buns. I really wish Macanese food were more widely available in the U.S. It's so hard to find.

This video tells a lot about Macanese cuisine. I visited Macau twice, but I barely knew about the food in Macau. Maybe i was too stuck in Hotel areas I guess?? 😂😂 This video is really helpful to understand culture in Macau better. I'm looking forward to see Macau edition episode 2!

I’m from the Philippines and I’m sure it’s widely known that the Spanish have colonized us for over 300 years. A lot of the dishes here are also a fusion of Chinese, Spanish & Malay or more Southeast Asian flavors. My grandma used to cook this dish called Arroz Ala Cubana , which I’m not sure if it’s a purely Spanish dish or if it’s fusion, but it reminds me of what I saw in your video. It’s fried rice with minced meat, diced potatoes, raisins and people usually eat it with fried bananas on the side.

mmm... yeah, Tacho is an amazing Macanese food. but i still prefer classic boiled bacalhau with boiled potatoes(bacalhau de consoada). it sounds bland, but with the white wine vinegar, it's so good with a nice subtle depth of flavour. although that's probably more full-on Portuguese food. i wonder if they ever blended bacalhau with steamed Macanese salted fish? 😅 the port along R. de Navegantas in Coloane used to have the best Fourfinger threadfin salted fish(馬友鹹魚) being hung dry there (over 20 years ago).

I don't love the term fusion food. I also don't love the term authentic food. Take a simple dish like mapo tofu. There are so many versions and who is to say one is more authentic than another. The important thing is to respect the history and culture that created the dish. As long as people cook out of love, that's all that matters.
Lovely to see people keeping macanese food alive and sharing the recipes.

@@BenjiSunsurprisingly yes! Peranakan identity is believed to have arrived with Hang Li Po’s marriage with Sultan Mansuh Shah in the mid 1400s. Baba and Nyonya was born from there

Macanese cuisine, this was the first time I ever heard of it. Just like the owner of the restaurant, I too, was in the kitchen beside my mother helping her prepare the ingredients for her to cook. That was how I learned how to cook some of the Cantonese dishes. I was only 5 yrs.
(I was the daughter mom never had.)
I first thing I ever cook was barbecue rice. What is barbecue rice you say? It is when you didn’t put enough water in the pot of rice and burned the rice. When Mom came home from work I had already had a new pot of steamed rice ready but she can smell something was burning and checked the pot but that appeared to be fine and then she check garbage.
The jig is up, run for your lives. I learned very quickly how to cook perfectly steam rice after I got an educational spanking from her. 😂
Your appearance looks fine. Did not see anything wrong. Was more interested in Macanese cooking.
But you do look familiar, you weren’t the RUclips lady with that smashed the rolling egg on the table at the restaurant, that was so funny,
was that you? 😂 Just curious.
Take care and have a blessed day.
    🙏🙏🙏

Whilst Philippine cuisine and Macanese cuisine fight over the title of "Asia's first fusion cuisine", Peranakan food enters the chat and beats us both soundly by TWO HUNDRED MORE YEARS. Philippine cuisine is only older than Macanese cuisine by a decade or so?
