Thanks for the video, Alexa. That post-event letdown feeling does come. When I worked for the Atlanta Olympics, they cautioned us about the letdown feeling once the fanfare was over. Others probably experienced it. I was pregnant and needed to rest. Kudos to you, though. 😊
Here's more on the phenomenon from our friend ChatGPT. 🙂 The post-event letdown, often referred to as "post-event blues" or "post-Olympic depression," is a psychological and emotional state many people experience after the completion of a major, exciting endeavor like working for the Olympics, hosting a large event, or even completing a long-term project. This feeling of letdown occurs when the energy, adrenaline, and purpose tied to the event suddenly dissipate, leaving a void. Here are some reasons for this feeling and tips on how to cope: ### Why the Letdown Happens: 1. **Adrenaline Crash**: Major events often involve high-stakes work, long hours, and heightened excitement. Once the event is over, the adrenaline that kept you going disappears, which can cause fatigue or even sadness.
2. **Loss of Structure and Purpose**: Working on a large project like the Olympics gives your life structure and a clear purpose. Once it's over, it may feel like you’ve lost direction or momentum. 3. **Social Disconnect**: Big events often involve working closely with teams or connecting with lots of people. After the event ends, you may miss the camaraderie and energy of that environment. 4. **Expectation Gap**: You may have anticipated a huge sense of fulfillment or satisfaction after the event, but once it's done, it might feel anticlimactic. 5. **Reflection on Achievements**: You may start to reflect on the event with a critical eye, questioning whether things went as planned or if your contributions had the desired impact. ### Coping with the Post-Event Blues: 1. **Acknowledge the Feeling**: Recognize that this is a normal part of completing a major project or event. It’s important not to ignore or downplay these feelings. 2. **Celebrate the Achievements**: Take time to reflect on the work you did and the milestones you hit. Celebrate both the big wins and the small victories. 3. **Plan for Recovery Time**: Allow yourself to rest and recuperate after the intense work. You’ll need time to recharge both physically and mentally. 4. **Set New Goals**: Having something to look forward to can help ease the transition. Set new personal or professional goals, whether they’re related to another big project or a small personal endeavor. 5. **Reconnect with Routine**: Reestablish a daily routine to regain structure and a sense of normalcy. Even if it's less intense than the event, routine can help restore balance. 6. **Stay Connected**: Keep in touch with people you worked with during the event. Shared experiences can help you process the post-event feeling together. 7. **Focus on Personal Well-Being**: Make sure you’re engaging in activities that promote your mental and physical health, such as exercise, hobbies, or mindfulness practices.
