I have 2 different therapists, an OT an PT, that both use PNF techniques with me. 6 months ago I could not lift my fingers, hand, wrist or arm from the mat. Today, I am lifting it off the mat, over my head, in an arc, and back down again very slowly. These particular movements they are showing in the vid are what help start the movements and strengthen the shoulder. Do them several times a day. Make certain that your shoulder is in place and not subluxed or out of socket because that will cause harm to your shoulder and you won't be able to do the exercises properly. I had 7 strokes 4 yrs ago. I had nothing on the right side, I couldn't even swallow water. I'm hobbling but walking and can move most of the arm, hold a jar using the lower arm, almost turning a doorknob successfully, and starting to be able to do 4 point work (on hands and knees). Next I should be crawling slowly.

I just found your sight today as I am trying to find physical therapy help for my sister-in-law, age 63, who had a stroke this past February and the pandemic/covid-19 has made it difficult to get the help and support she desperately needs. The funny thing about finding your site is that in the hospital, she named her affected left arm BRAD, so that all we had to do was ask how Brad is doing and it brought a little levity to otherwise dire circumstances. She is also still in a wheelchair from the stroke as well. She can stand for short periods of time but not actually walk on her own. I will share your RUclips channel with her and hopefully motivate her to work on these thigs independently.

So this exercise helps if the arm is weak but what if he can't move it at all? I have a really good friend that had a stroke about a year ago and I'm trying to keep him motivated... would this one be good?

Hi, My older brother was shot in 2012. he lost movement in 80% of his body, but with the will power, theraphy, and God he gained control of everything but his right arm… its been five yrs and he is doing everything he can to gain control of his arm. he has little movement but needs improvement in his upper back and his arm.. Is it any thing you think we should do as a 1st step

My fiancee had a stroke and he's 27. Now he is walking and can move fine now. Only thing is he still gets light headed and spaced out. Sometimes strong light headedness to where it feels like it will make him dizzy again and things move but it never gets that strong so he just gets light headed strongly sometimes. So my question is; what can he do to make it go away what excersises? Thanks for answering.

i had a stroke 19 years ago. the doctor said I'll never walk or be normal. i was the first one in Chicago to retrain my brain i did it without any help because back then they were just starting to believe you could retrain your brain. i just got movement back in my arm but the doctors keep telling me there's no way to make it stronger. my hand is stuck closed so i doubt i can do anything for it. i just want to get my arm stronger and since no one believes in me i have to do it myself and i no i am strong enough mentally to do it but do you have any advice for me?

My uncle has suffered a severe stroke three months ago (at the age of 87). He has made a miraculous recovery already - speech, swallowing, walking, even his left arm. But the arm is still the biggest worry. I would like to suggest him a set of exercises which he should work on. Can you recommend?

My father had suffered a stroke in the summer, and was in critical condition in the hospital for two months. He had later moved on to a physical therapy home and had stayed there for 3 months. During this time he made miraculous progress but still needs help. He has perfect memory, problem solving skills, and speech. However, his left side of his body is nearly immobile, unable to do much of anything, his right side works perfectly fine however. He just now came home and we are taking care of him, but we need all the help we can get to help him get better and back to work, because he really wants to go back , but can't walk properly due to his left side. Any good exercises he should do or suggestions, thank you for reading this. It really means a lot!

just a suggestion, please don't take offense. Maybe you can put a marker, like a colored fabric/tape on the hmiparetic extremity for the video so as the viewing audience who are not trained in rehab can visually identify and comprehend what is being done :-) otherwise, great video.

I've been using your videos, pointing you guys out to my patients in homehealth, as part of their HEP.
