Thank you so very much. My dad has a 1999 4.0 SE. He recently spent over $4000 having various issues fix and servicing maintenance on the vehicle. After driving 3000 miles he experienced the same problem. Had it towed to Landover dealership in Greensboro, NC. They charged charged him for a diagnostic fee. They wanted to charge him $4000+ for a new transmission.

It backed out fine, but I stopped @ neutral before putting in drive & thats when I lost all gears. Same grinding when I put into park. This video was the first one I clicked on & the only one I needed to get out of the pickle I was in. I disconnected the Battery & followed the your steps. Transfer case ingauged just as you said. It's an addiction bro.. my 06 HSE has cost me 26500 in 3 yrs in repairs... Today the transfer case gave out... These trucks are the biggest piece of shit on wheels... They ARE like a beautiful cheating woman you just can't let go of💯💯💯💯💯🙏🙏🙏
Thank you heaps for making this video. I had the same problem after I replaced the fuel pump. For some reason it lost all gears . Watch your video checked out the fuses and took out number 11 fuses and put it in drive and it started moving OMG . The dude at the shop said I need a new trans. Thank you .

Well that’s what happens when newbies get a sophisticated vehicle read your manual F11 is for Towing it unlocks the transfer case so you can tow it pull it out and everything is fine I’ve had mine for 11 years there has been no major issues ,,, torque down the head bolts at 120,000 km not sure what Miles is you’ll save a head gasket blowing,,,a few little gremlins with connections but otherwise for the $6000 that I spent buying it from Japan 97,,,, it is most excellent
This just saved me from being stranded. I was chasing trailer light fuses and light have put a fuse back in the wrong spot. Couple trips later at a red light the transfer case popped into neutral. luckily I was on a hill and could coast to a safe spot, found your video, and it 2 minutes I was back in business! Thanks bud!!
I had the same issue with a 2003 HSE. It belonged to a good customer and neighbor of mine. I don't work on Rovers as a rule so I know very little about them. It turned out that the transfer case fuse that should have been plugged in for towing was plugged in. The customer didn't know anything about it? When I removed the fuse and started the car the switch for the transfer case range activated and the car had gears again. I found the solution on the internet by chance.
I have owned 7 of these p38s, I wouldn't drive any thing out there except p38 range Rovers. You have to read the manual before touching a p38. It's not for jokes, this thing was made like a tractor and fast as a BMW even in 4 wheel drive. I love them. The fuse 11 is inserted after you have selected transfer neutral for towing. Again after you have already selected transfer neutral. The design is call the H gate. Left leg of the H is high gear for normal driving only. Right leg of the H is low range for of road and high torque only and you can only go 35 mph. The middle line of the H is for neutrals. 3 neutrals. High neutral, middle neutral which is transfer case neutral and the far right which is low neutral. To go into low range, stop the vehicle completely, put your foot firmly on the brake, move the lever to the far right neutral and wait for the electric motor to finish the transfer before you attempt to put it in drive or reverse. Listen for beeps, after the beeps you will see L on the dash. It's safe to go into gear now. When going to High range, do the same. Listen for the beeps and wait for the end of the beeps, look for H on the dash before you go to drive. They are very reliable until someone doesn't read the manual.
