The claim is that Isreal is so much more successful and contributes more to the world inspite of needing to carve out a country in an area full of swamps at it's shores and deserts in it's interior surrounded by hostile Arab states around it. This guy is full of dishonesty.
It's unbelievable that the anchor could ask him that with a straight face... "Here's a list of blatantly racist remarks made about you - how do you respond?"

@@robertcampomizzi7988 The review asserts with no evidence that Ta-Nehisi is jealous that Jews were able to accomplish something blacks could not. That's what makes it racial. Then it used a fictional and extreme example (Wakanda) of what success would've looked like in an attempt to mock the apparent failure of himself and other blacks. That's what makes it racist.
I’m fed up with any honest and valid criticism of Netanyahu’s genocide against Palestinian people being called anti-Semitic. It is NOT anti-Semitic!!! Why is this the only country in the world allowed to act so brutally toward other human beings and largely given a pass from condemnation?
Is this a joke? Israel is not criticized, condemned, censured, etc. on a daily basis while Sudan, Iran, Syria, Yemen, *insert 50 other countries here* are? Did you just fall from a tree?
Seriously. It's anti-semetic to think that actual Jewish people want this kind of bloodshed. A genuine religious person who practices grace and love does NOT support this.
Will you please educate yourself. Israel is condemned by the United Nations more than all of the other countries in the world combined. Israel conducts wars far more humanely than the U.S. or the Brits but one would not know that because all we hear in condemnation of Israel nonstop.
The Jews get virtually no support from African-Americans. Who do you think founded the NAACP? Who do you think was its first president? Who do you think funded it to get it off the ground? Thankfully the Jews. What group of "white" people were most of the civil rights march allies? Jews. GIve me a break.
I understand what Ta-Nehisi is saying about inclusiveness isn't a disclaimer against racism. Having black police officers in your local police department doesn't mean the department can't have policies that allow for profiling young black men. Many of them do have those policies.
this is true so true.... but his lack of support for the pro democracy candiate is unaceeptable and will lead to him and his people and us all being deported or dead. Exactly why we say ACAB. Ex. Black men join the military bc they’re given less opportunities. They’re still extensions of imperialism in other countries.
During apartheid in South Africa, there were Blacks who were instruments of their own oppression. The gruesome thing is when they were caught, they were burned alive.
"My hope is for my people that the message is not merely that slavery is wrong because we are the slaves but that it is an actual interrogation of systems and a belief that those systems should not exist in the world no matter who it is" - Ta-Nehisi Coates
@@robertcampomizzi7988 Well, you keep asking a bunch of people about how is it racist, not only is it racist, it's erroneous fabrication of history. But the racist part is this: Many other white men have written books about this very same situation, but only Coates book is getting this type criticism. So the criticism is the racism because he's only writing about what he witnessed. It's like if I were to visit South Africa in the 70's and write a book about it, the treatment of the blacks, then you have the audacity to criticize what I witnessed.
@@robertcampomizzi7988 The part where the reviewer said that Coates is just jealous because Black people are less civilized than Jewish people. The fact that you need that explained to you is also really concerning, by the way.
I'm so glad that Ta-Nehisi Coates, as always, is succinct and on point. I've enjoyed reading his previous books, and I'll read "The Message" as well. He's one of the clearest thinkers on these issues that I've heard.
Ta-Nehisi Coates speaks the truth to power. Colonial power. If we are to have an honest discussion of Israel and Palestine, then colonialism absolutely must be a part of the conversation. Israel was carved out of land that was inhabited for centuries by people who had deed and title to much of the land. In 1948, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were forced off their lands. That is fact and until such facts are acknowledged, the discussion of Israel and its "right to exist" will always be tainted by the stain of colonialism.
For centuries you say? I suggest you revisit the history because if you want to go back to who were the indigenous people of the area, it is the Jews. Caught you.
The problem with people Like Helen Andrews, Cornel West, and that reporter from CBS is that they all want to skim T. Coates' work, then give an opinion. It does not work that way. Coates goes out, sees the thing, experiences it, researches the subject, gathers historical context, sits with the subject matter then he gives his take. There's always nuance. If you skim, you miss it all and Like miss Andrews, you end up angrily typing up a fiery op ed that not only proves you didn't read the material, but reveals your own racism when your goal was to expose someone else's.
@@hadamerryweather577 you are part of the problem. Coates is critiquing nationalism, and you are still trying to find an excuse to justify it. Both sides have great reasons why they each should have this "right to exist". The way they are going about it is the issue.

But Egypt does and by proportion, the Palestinians did under many presidents prior to Trump and those countries are dictatorships with an unspeakable level of poverty. Arab Israelis live like kings by comparison to any Arab country. There are some rights, very few that are not given to the Arab citizens and that primarily has to do with bringing in partners from outside of Israel. As for being able to buy a house, there are some limited restrictions in some areas but if you could get off your anti-Israel kick long enough, instead of concentrating on Israel you might look at for example, NYC co-op rules which allow discrimination by the board for whatever reason. Israel is a democracy and democracies can change laws. In Apartheid in South Africa, 14 percent of the senate wasn't black. In Israel, 14 percent of the senate is Arab Israeli and that is getting closer and closer to the 20 percent of the population. Is the U.S. senate 13.6 percent black? That's what it should be if we go by percentage of the population. There are four black senators in the U.S., which is four percent, but the general population is 13.6 percent black. Why would you think it's bizarre? Even though there were some Jewish Conservative Republicans involved in the CRM, they have been attempting to dismantle racialized affirmative action since 1970 and actively supported Bakke. Black conservative Republicans were in cohoots with JCRs even though Arthur Allen Fletcher, a black Republican, was the father of affirmative action. Let that sink in.
Well remember Senator Turtle McConnell said that the USA isn’t racist because we had a Black president. Yet TFG Trump referred to his wife’s ethnicity calling her “Chow Chow”.
@@comments8742 Israel wants to use the US to tear down the UN so that they can take what doesn't belong to them. They forget who made them Israel in the first place.
Yes
It’s understandable but sad that many Americans (including academics and “experts”) badly *need* to cling to the myth that “Persecuted Jews created an oasis of liberal democracy and industrialization in the middle of the desert - all by themselves - solely because they were “superior” to the “barbaric Arab savages” all around them. “
I mean it’s basically the same myth we told ourselves about America - before we started getting curious about Native Americans. I wish they would get more curious about the Palestinian side of the story instead of vacuously repeating talking points about “Israel’s right to defend itself”. What Israelis most need protection from isn’t terrorists - it’s a mirror.
Yes, but let’s not forget the US supports everything Israel does and even finances it.
If you think Israel should give back the land to the descendants of the people they took it from... do you think the USA should give back the land to the descendants of the people they took it from?
@TPaine76 - You write, "What Israelis most need protection from isn’t terrorists - it’s a mirror." That's a very broad brush you're using there. And a slippery slope to bigotry.
@@JordanHunter333 It really isn't
You’re imposing a bs narrative on anyone who doesn’t support the Palestinian “cause.” A 70+ year campaign to annihilate the Jewish state. You cannot erase history for those, like me, who actually lived it & did not learn history from TikTok. You’re a tool for Tehran. Suggest you go live there - plenty of Iranians & others in the Levant who’d be happy to trade places. You can live under the boot of the genocidal Islamists you worship.
Great researcher. He speaks moderately and with considerable clarity
Thank you, TNC! 🇵🇸❤️
Great job Ta-Nehisi! Evey interview he shows he is above the same narrative that people are so tired of. Good on him for being able to keep what matters at the forefront of all humanity! Our mainstream news/media is so out of touch with the reality of people and truth.
Our own country has always seemed to be of “colonis-tic” view since the beginning. Not just with slaves from Africa, but also with the indigenous people here.
The original 13 states were colonies first, so yeah.
“seemed” ha…. Is from inception
Your comment deserves several hundred thumb's up, but this is RUclips, so I can only give you one.
To give a more honest account of slavery, you really should not leave out the Arab slave trade that went on from the 7Th Century until the 1960s.
Also, it’s not too late for Americans to give back the land we stole from the American Indian tribes, as well as reparations. And to give reparations to the decedents of slaves as well as demanding Arabians giving reparations.
Let’s stand up for what is right! And fair!
@@BeanMacdui How is it that you don't understand the difference between world history and U.S. history?
Sad to see this kind of nasty review in 2024... Thank you for your important work Mr Coates!
People who are committing gen/cide to maintain an apartheid would be ready to do more than just a racists book review if they thought they might lose some of their privileges.
That was wildly wildly racist omg
Apartheid occupation and genocide will not be tolerated. This host is awesome for not only getting Coates on here but allowing Jeremy Scahill to tell the truth the other day as well.
Great book by a great author.
Free Palestine ❤❤❤❤
Took a while for Coates to get to this position but reading about it and experiencing it (as he did during his trip) are two different things. Regardless, at least he’s at the place he is now and as a “respected” voice of liberal thought he can explicate what others have been saying for decades.
Anytime you speak the truth, this is to be expected.❤❤❤❤
Yo that last review was extremely underhandedly racist.
Honestly, it wasn't underhanded at all, it was BLATANTLY racist.
Love Ta Hanisi Coates he’s absolutely spot on the topic of Israel and it’s existence
Respect to Ta-Nehisi for speaking the truth!
Thank you ayman for interviewing this guest.
The host failed basic journalistic standards and failed to impartially interview the author. Coates visited the occupied territories and wrote about the apartheid and racism that he saw firsthand. Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and B'Tselem (Israel's largest human rights group) have all published reports detailing Israel's apartheid against Palestinians. The International Criminal Court of Justice also found Israel responsible for apartheid. Attacking Coates with his opinionated line of questioning and implying he was an extremist without disclosing his religious conversion and the fact his wife and kids live in Israel was deceptive
To say the least.
The host asked for comment !!!!!!!! That is journalism.
Your comment is filled with inaccurate statements. If you have to lie and exaggerate, you are not serious.
@@YahziCoyote I could give three fifths of a crap how you rationalize your pedantry. You know what you're doing and it's disgusting, perhaps justice would be for you to find yourself being policed the same way Palestinians are in the West Bank and Gaza. Then, through forced empathy, perhaps you'll understand their plight. Or continue to be a monster in RUclips comments.
@@YahziCoyoteand what are the borders of Israel when Zionism is an expansionist idea? Your word salad holds no water.
It must be unsettling to have your ideas met with such bigotry, yet what a contribution and opportunity to openly discuss these issues that may slowly open people's minds to the inhumanity behind colonialism.
If Jews are colonists in the Levant, then native Americans are colonists in the US. Seriously, the ignorance of TikTok historians. 😂

Ta-Nehisi Coates has one of the most brilliant minds and speaks with clear and precise wisdom!! Amazing
I’m definitely buying the book now, if ‘certain people’ hates the book. It must be good.
This man is so eloquent and genius. Every interview he drops nuggets of knowledge that are so profound and moving. What a beautiful mind!!!❤
He is very brave to have written that book and to talk about it. I agree with what he’s saying. It’s just that people don’t want to listen.
People are listening that is why he is getting the push back.
It’s more than listening, though. What does writing a book and profiting off of the suffering of Palestinians do? What does buying and reading the book and leaving comments on RUclips do? We need to return the stolen lands in America to the indigenous American Indian tribes and we need to pay reparations to the descendants of slaves. Let’s not rattle off empty words, let’s address the ongoing colonialism and its destructive effects in the world.
Shaking - this gentleman is such a great teacher.
Did He say that "Israel does not have a right to e exsist"? No nation, no nation has the right to create themselves upon the bodies of others. It appears that people of power have begun to attempt to destroy this author. I for one will now buy His book.
He’s on point.. He should expect this type of slander when he speaks the truth.
homegirl referenced wakanda i"m dead
It blows my mind how sensible some people get when being confronted with the fact that Israel isn't that moral utopia they were taught by mainstream media. Also, it's not like there's a shortage of books describing how Israel was founded. Rashid Khalidi, Ilan Pappé, and Norman Finkelstein have all written excellent books on the subject.
Even books on Zionism written by Zionists openly state that Zionism is about colonialism. I don't know why Zionists are even trying to dispute that when there are several quotes from the founders of Zionism and Israel stating that they were colonizing the Palestinians.
Thank you Ta-Nehisi Coates you are speaking to the heart of the issue that has allowed racists apartheid in all its forms to exist. Ayman, why blindside with a negative shallow review when you are interviewing with an amazing author?
I'm buying this book and listening to it on an upcoming road trip. Just listening to The Barn and this will be an amazing continuation.
Finally, a real writer like Coates and a real conversation, even if it feels uncomfortable. Coates is a courageous journalist. A lot of journalists can take page out of his book. He keeps it real. We need more people like Coates in our politics and media.
you can criticize God, Jesus, The President of the US, and every one in between with no issue. Dare you criticize Israeli barbarism and you are marked.
All of the land occupied by Israel was brought about by the Balfour Declaration and guaranteed by Great Britain 🇬🇧. Included was the phrase, “Nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish persons. There were and are still many powerful political figures in Great Britain that claim the Jewish religion. The political pressure brought to bear on this idea of a Jewish state was from a powerful minority that wished to move the “Jewish Problem” outside of Great Britain. Once people started pouring into these lands, conflict inevitably began between the immigrants/settlers, the existing Population and the British troops there attempting to provide order. The “terrorists” including the soon to be “founders of Israel” began a dual campaign against the existing peoples AND the British troops.
God lead the jews to israel . He created that land for the descendants of Abraham. Many wars scattered the jews throughout the world and after ww2 the jews wanted to go home to israel , their God given land. So bal four was designed. Its nowhere near the big space it was in biblical times

Yeah, I recall Israeli defenders using the Balfour Declaration as some kind of legitimate pretext for Israel, as if Palestine, conquered by a colonial imperialist Britain, was Britains to give.
Wow. That quote is so loaded. Gobsmacked.

It was not cool to blindside Mr Coates with that so-called book review, which does not qualify as constructive criticism. You recirculated inflammatory nonsense that was best left where it was…unread.

Thank you for being exactly who you are, Mr. Coates. ❤
A way to identify false righteousness is to observe the react to criticism. Righteous people will stop to consider if there is validity to the criticism. A nation's people deserve peace and security. A nation's job is to ask, is this government providing that peace.
The sheer level of racism in that last article was enough to stun Ta-Nehisi into being speechless 😂 I hope that lady realizes she only reinforced his point in the book, which of course she didn’t read because he also criticized Liberia 🫠
10:02 is the question and answer I have been grappling with. There is something much bigger happening here. It's not merely aligning with an ally. There is more underneath this war that hasn't been unearthed, but we will eventually learn what it is.
It's messianic fervour as well because so many US politicians are Zionists. Also rampant corruption. Think about it. American aid flows to Israel. Rich Jewish donors and lobbying groups who have business interests in Israel then "donates" money to campaigns of US politicians. It's a cycle of money changing hands .
Like what? Power, corruption, money? I don’t see some kind of deeper meaning.
We as capitalists and colonization here in the US need to stand up for what is right and give the indigenous American Indian tribes their land back. And we need to pay reparations to all descendants of slaves.
@@BeanMacdui right. You don’t SEE a deeper meaning. This is beyond what we see with our eyes. All of what you mentioned matters (and I agree with you). However, there is more to this and we will find out in time. That’s all I’m saying.

Ayman a great segment! Shining a light on this issue and exposing the hyprocracy and rascism is breaking through! Keep up the excellent reporting the mainstream media is generally failing on this issue. ❤
Coates is such an elegant intellectual who brings rigor to the field of journalism and storytelling. He's a rare one nowadays in the sea of sellouts and those willingly blind to what it means to be principled. I look forward to going to my local bookstore this week to buy his book.

Israelies did not carve their country out of the desert, from day one its was carved out of Palestinians, its social cohesion seems dependant on the hatred and dehumisation of Palestinians, Palestinians of all denominations.
Only in USA is a factual book considered controversial
Ta-Nehisi Coates is completely correct about his experience in Israel. Keep in mind that he is also from a people, who understands Oppression, Slavery, Massacres, Homelessness, Injustice, Apartheid, Racism, Jim Crow,, Racial Profiling and Inequality. I believe everyone has a right to exist by a 2 state solution and peace can never be for one and not for the other. The world sees that no hands are clean and that is a fact. However, when you look at the deaths of 15 thousand innocent Palestinian children, there is no excuse to justify that and it is certainly a crime against humanity. I'm also a Zionist and believe in the Jewish State but also believe in a Palestinian State with the same rights and privileges. Lets be honest, this war is way beyond terrorism ( from both sides), its really about racism and the wrongful taking of more Palestinian land. We are all God's equal children whom he loves and if anyone can't practice the Golden Rule, then they don't know him.
The ICJ made a verdict in 2019 (or 2009) and 2024 for Israel to get out of the Palestinian territories that were occupied since 1967. However, Israel will never abide by this verdict and the US and other Western countries that profit from Israeli lobbies will never stop Israel's war crimes and illegal occupation.
