    Very tragic, to be a passenger on the Princess Alice. Those who were not killed during the collision, fell into the filthy, polluted Thames. Some who were rescued, passed from the ingestion of diseased, poisoned water. I would imagine not many people knew how to swim or even float. Thank you for your historic sharing.

      And even those who could swim, would have struggled due to wearing many layers of clothing that was the norm, at the time. Especially women.

    • @YuBeace
      @YuBeace Год назад +9

      Not only was it the norm to wear many layers of clothing, but a significant amount of fabric would have been made for wool, which gets exceptionally heavy when drenched in water. Even those who could swim may not have been able to.

    Fascinating case.. So sad how many lost their lives - over 640.. A paddle steamer/short haulier which should never have been used as a passenger liner.. carrying almost 1000 people! Changing the name doesn't change what this doomed vessel was capable of!
    I could picture everything, 😒 thanks to your perfect narration, Paul.. harrowing tales related with great empathy.. 👍I can only imagine how rancid the water was! I can't imagine arguing over bodies to be recovered for a few shillings! 😢

      I've been told its bad luck to change the name of a boat/ship. Something along the lines of....once it's been named it's logged in the Sea God's "book" as such, and changing the name suggests the vessel is attempting to "disguise" itself as it crosses water. This would anger whatever god of the sea there was, and ill fortune would await such a ship.

    Brilliant story relating the tale of the sinking of the SS Princess Alice. I was only aware of this through a folk song I learned in the 1980s. The chorus went something like...When the Princess Alice, sank in Barking Reach, 640 died together, but not all of them drowned as the coroner found, some were poisoned by the black stinking river. Truly horrific.

    I recall very many years ago hearing that the collier crew were technically to blame as some were under the influence of drink. They had not apparently kept a good lookout, and the passenger ship was a lot smaller. How true I do not know but it was a very elderly lady that mentioned it as she recalled people talking about it who had known folks that were there.

I have been there to see it, and while I hesitated to dip any toes (or other parts of my anatomy) into it, I can say it's a DAMN SIGHT cleaner than depicted in this video and story.
      ...AND just for the record, I actually think it would be reasonably safe. I was on short time, and had no good resource for water quality... Sensitive skin and allergies make me a tad overly cautious about randomly jumping or wading into "unknown waters"... ha-ha ;o)

      YUP. I’ve always known the Mother Earth will be fine after us human vermin are gone. We only think we can destroy her because we believe that we are superior over her. Nope she is self healing and in the end after the human race is gone, she’ll be just fine. That or the Sun explodes!
      LOL
