This event, in part, is eerily similary to that of the SS Eastlands disaster. If you've not seen it yet, @AskAMortician made a thorough and respectful video covering the story. ruclips.net/video/UCHt2MOVCbg/видео.html
My mum's side of the family were Thames Watermen, going back generations. I remember my grandfather telling me this story, his father was part of the rescue efforts.
Very tragic, to be a passenger on the Princess Alice. Those who were not killed during the collision, fell into the filthy, polluted Thames. Some who were rescued, passed from the ingestion of diseased, poisoned water. I would imagine not many people knew how to swim or even float. Thank you for your historic sharing.
Not only was it the norm to wear many layers of clothing, but a significant amount of fabric would have been made for wool, which gets exceptionally heavy when drenched in water. Even those who could swim may not have been able to.
I'm making a mental note to never ride on a boat or ship while wearing 1800s period appropriate clothing. New fear unlocked. Also, I literally have never worn 1800s period appropriate clothing and I'm still scared.
@@mimsydreams Never LARP on boats! :P That reminds me... When I had swimming lessons we had a couple of lessons dedicated to swimming with clothes on. 🤔
Hadn’t heard of this. It’s terrifying enough to fall into water or abandon ship, but basically jumping into a dump/broken toilet? Even if I survived, I don’t think I’d ever feel clean again.
What an awful tragedy! There seemed to be no escape: those who didn't drown or got killed in the collusion, died later after ingesting the polluted water. Thank you for honoring the memory of the victims.
It sounds like both captains were at fault, but the city of London was at bigger fault for allowing such pollution which killed so many who might have been rescued.
I am reminded of the Rough River in Detroit, Michigan, USA that was so polluted by industrial waste that said River actually caught fire October 9, 1969. The water burned for several hours.
What a fascinating yet devastating story, thank you for the hard work as usual, Paul and team and for making sure the victims are remembered and honoured ❤ Always glad to watch a video from you
So the Great Stink of 1858 was still in the Thames years later? How horrible to know what's in that water while drowning due to Victorian fashion mores 😢
Fascinating case.. So sad how many lost their lives - over 640.. A paddle steamer/short haulier which should never have been used as a passenger liner.. carrying almost 1000 people! Changing the name doesn't change what this doomed vessel was capable of! I could picture everything, 😒 thanks to your perfect narration, Paul.. harrowing tales related with great empathy.. 👍I can only imagine how rancid the water was! I can't imagine arguing over bodies to be recovered for a few shillings! 😢
I've been told its bad luck to change the name of a boat/ship. Something along the lines of....once it's been named it's logged in the Sea God's "book" as such, and changing the name suggests the vessel is attempting to "disguise" itself as it crosses water. This would anger whatever god of the sea there was, and ill fortune would await such a ship.

Fascinating video. I would be up from some more maritime stories from you 👍 Staggering really that despite our massive water bills, water companies still pump raw sewage into the Thames. Millions of tonnes of raw sewage spills, untreated, into the River Thames each year.
Did I hear right, that after the helmsman got off the boat a *passenger* was placed on the helm? Even if he was an experienced seaman, that is seriously messed up. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Brilliant story relating the tale of the sinking of the SS Princess Alice. I was only aware of this through a folk song I learned in the 1980s. The chorus went something like...When the Princess Alice, sank in Barking Reach, 640 died together, but not all of them drowned as the coroner found, some were poisoned by the black stinking river. Truly horrific.
Thank you for this great salute to the Princess Alice victims. I recall very many years ago hearing that the collier crew were technically to blame as some were under the influence of drink. They had not apparently kept a good lookout, and the passenger ship was a lot smaller. Amazing how just because the people onboard were working class, the whole thing got swept under the rug and forgotten, whereas something like the Titanic gets all the attention because there were wealthy people onboard. It makes me wonder how many more moments in history are scrubbed from our collective history because the people involved were simply not rich enough and therefore beneath notice. The same thing happens today, I fear.
I remember seeing the ensign from the Princess Alice in the River Police Museum at Wapping. Apparently the sewage gave off noxious gasses which lingered just a few inches above the water, but this is exactly where people in the water were gasping for air...
