It caught my imagination and I have studied the ins and outs of mudlarking. I have followed Nicola for a while and she is wonderful. She gets so excited about her finds and does research on each little thing. It puts everything into context and she brings her audience into her passion.

That was such a good comeback about the Mississippi River. We sure asked for it.
People, not getting their name back, they are not reported missing, no one notices, the cops don’t take the disappearance seriously, whatever the reason, it makes me very sad. I think being given their name back takes them from being curiosities and weaves them back into the the tapestry, it makes them fully part of us again.

What I found especially interesting is that this is not the only series of torso murders. On the other side of the pond, there was a series of cases collectively referred to as the Cleveland Torso Murders. They took place in Cleveland, Ohio. The killer was referred to as the Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run. As in the Thames cases, the killer has never been identified.

Unfortunately I remember the case of a young boys torso being found in the Thames much more recently. I remember being horrified that people weren’t immediately saying “Well this missing child is that age, it must be them” and realised how easy it can be for people to get away with such things because no one even knows they are meant to be looking.

Nosy busybodies would have seen a little boy suddenly show up, not go to school, not play with other kids in the neighborhood, then suddenly disappear! They then would see on the news the horrible murder and tell the police, anonymously, the address of their neighbors’s house and hopefully the police could find evidence before it was cleaned up. So many people failed that little boy. Evil wins when decent people do nothing or not pay attention. Busybodies save lives! Surely someone had to see him, right? I wish someone spoke up. 😢

So interesting (!!!) with the "mudlarking" hobby, cause this is a very old "occupation" indeed. I know from I think it was either in the "Worst jobs in History", from the Victorian era, or about the building of the sewers in London that eradicated the Typhoid fever from wells with polluted groundwaters from cesspits and such, after The Great Stink parliment. Where the tunnels from the sewers exited downstream past the city, various people had something like a day-job from finding coins and such between the brick-stones far down said tunnels. But it was criminalized at some point.

I'm not trying to diminish the Thames importance in history, but our own Mississippi is gaining some liquid history of her own. Lewis and Clark. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The last resting place of desparate slaves. New Orleans and jazz. The Musical Showboat and Paul Robeson's rendition of "Old Man River".
Neither river's story has yet come to an end.

Great video as always. One thing though, that is not a photo of Mary 'Polly' Nichols. Well, it's almost certainly not at least. The only canonical ripper victim with a known photograph taken in life was Annie Chapman. I think someone found that image one day, decided it looked a bit like the mortuary photo of Polly, and its taken on a life of its own ever since.

Wow, I'd heard of the final victim, in the context of her being a suspected victim of the Ripper, but never realized there were other victims.

I recently read a book inspired by mud larking and late 18th century London called The Lost Apothecary. What I wouldn't give to go searching for treasures in the Thames!

This case is very reminiscent of The Cleveland Torso Killer. Cleveland cops never found the murderer of those females back in the 30's. Thank you Mr. Brodie, new subber now.

I have been following Nicola for years! Her finds are amazing, ask her about her saving the plush/stuffed animals. How absolutely dreadful to think of those two {?} murderers stalking victims and the police having no recourse. Chilling.
