Tips for High Handicap Golfers

  • A 28 handicap has 10 holes where they get 2 shots. And yet I still see people trying to bust a gut with the driver to get on a par 4 in 2 when their handicap dictates they should get on the green in 4 shots.
If you do have 4 shots then why not take 3? I see a lot of net birdies in your future.

Love this. Only 10% of golfers break 80 on a regular basis yet the internet is full of 3’s hitting $1,200 irons telling us we need the newest $600 game improvement driver.

Are you sure we don't need $600 drivers and $500 putters? Not to mention a 5 iron that someone wrote a 7 on the bottom of it by mistake.

@@thehairygolfer greetings from midwest N America. I’m a fan. at 71 I’m wondering if game improvement irons would help me (hitting 18 year old Cobras). All I see is 3 handicap golfers testing these GI clubs on youtube. That doesn’t really help us. What do you suggest? Can you get a high handicapper out on the course and see if they help him? Would like to see that happen.

@@howardstory1391 I like game improvement irons as long as they don't have stupid lofts. Weight down low helps get the ball up, a bigger face gets you a bigger sweet spot. Problem is finding some that don't have a wedge of 42 degrees and do you have to buy the extra wedges? I've never looked into what makes up a set.
I don't have access to clubs unfortunately, I would love to do club testing videos and drag in the views. I just can't do it. I agree watching a gorilla pound balls into a tv screen is no use for us at all. Sorry, I can't help.

Simon, you should golf here in southern Arizona--we get, on average, only 12" of rain PER YEAR! Here in Tucson, we get 284 days of sunshine every year. Yes, it's hot much of the year, but it's a dry heat. As for your tips, I actually did this. I was tired of scores in the mid-nineties, so one day, when I had the course almost to myself, I tried this approach, hitting nothing longer than a six iron. I shot 81. Playing with others though, I still pull my driver on par 4's and 5's, and my woods on long approaches and layups. Yes, it's ego. But at 75 years old, it's been embarrassing enough moving up to the gold tees.

Hit fairways and that really helps you enjoy the round. We don't have forward tees here, the choice is competition, mens and ladies.

Simon one of your strengths is course management - this video is excellent. Golf is about minimising errors. The 12th at Lilley Brook is a good example of ensuring good course management. I’m not long enough to get past the dogleg so I hit 7 wood, 7 iron SW and can find the green. I play the hole as a par 6 so anything less is a bonus. I used Arccos too which I’d highly recommend

    • @thehairygolfer

You learn course management the hard way David or just keep losing balls. I learnt it after my first trip to Thailand with all that sand and water.
The 12th is a hole you can't bully and you must not let it bully you. I just found it unfair, you hit your tee shot and it rolls further away from the green rather than getting closer. What do you think of the new 13th tee they are going to build? I think it's a bit silly myself to make yet another hard hole.

But i do agree geting off the tee in good shape is step one to a good score so if driver doesnt work for leave it in the bag. For my scores to drop i need to hit more greens and i need my chipping to improve to a point i can get the ball up amd down most times. I honestly cant tell you how often im laying 1 in the middle of the fairway, then miss the green, chip, 2 putt and take a bogey or worst.

I think it's all about your personal philosophy on golf. Do you want to absolutely get your best possible score no matter what or do you want to have maximum fun while on the course? The thrill of hitting one good driver makes up for 3 or 4 missed ones. If you settle for playing to your ability, you'll be happy with that and my view is you won't have much incentive to try and improve.

    • @thehairygolfer
      @thehairygolfer  11 месяцев назад

Is golf a sport or a past time? With the introduction of handicap indexes up to 56 which will grant you as many as 62 shots on some courses then for some people it is not a sport.
My maximum fun is hitting what I aim at and shooting a low score. One good driver does not make up for 3 or 4 lost balls. Not a chance. 25% success rate would get you fired at work. I will never settle for poor golf, I put in the time to keep my handicap low. Most golfers put in no time at all and wonder why they are still a 20 handicap after playing for 30 years. I could not settle for for shooting 82 when I know with work and keeping sharp I can shoot 72 and sometimes break it.

A good bunch of lads at Gloucester. Clay seems to dry quite quick given a bit of sun and wind. I've played a bit but not as much as I would like. I shall be in Herefordshire when I play away plus trips to West Mon.

I focus my mind that every hole is a bogey. Yesterday had 2 birdies and 6 pars. Not bad for a 71 year old with good course management

I played a round with 7iron Pw Lw and a putter and shot 82 on a 6500yd course. Not just 25yr olds. Older beginners are the same. I also tell them play for bogey and they will be surprised how many par putts they will have

It's surprising how well you do when you hit every fairway with an iron. It really does show that fairway beats a long way in the trees. I played with a couple of guys recently who were 24 and 33 handicap. Driver every hole. It was a better ball competition off 85% and they scored 27 points between them. They opened with a par for 4 points too. But they had a number of holes which they both blobbed on. How can you have all those shots and holes you get 2 shots on and score nothing? Driver is the answer. Cheers

We took the piss relentlessly because he had been struggling with a whole bag full! Staying out of trouble makes this game so easy.

I'm always thinking par 3s two shots on the greenpar 4 3 shots to the green par 5 4 shots onto the green, I only use 5 iron above

Perfect. When I play with my boys I say to them this is a par 6 for you and a par 4 for me. Can you think of a way of making a safe 5 for nett birdie. Then you can add a hybrid and slowly fill teh bag up. I played 2 years with irons and learnt my trade. A bit extreme but I feel it was better to not lose balls. Losing balls crushes interest in the game. Best of luck.

The only time I’d use the handicap system would be in a tournament. When I’m playing for myself I just play to get the best score I can and at the end of the round that’s my score. No sense in fooling myself into saying I just shot a 78 when in fact it was a 98…..

I try to pay no attention to scores off the yellows mid week. The real deal is off the whites with a card in your hand. Mid week for me is practice time and making videos while I practice on the course. But I do push myself all the same.

My goal this year is to break 80. I'm sure you've done vids on this before. It's not improving my technique, it is what it is. It's about my course management and being switched on all through the round. Thanks 😁
11 weeks of rain? I've been hearing about hosepipe bans. This global warming Is rubbish 🗑

Hello Alan, I think breaking 80 is more about attitude than physical. Keeping the ball on the planet by making better decisions, tidying up with the short game. There are videos coming where I look at lower handicaps. I'm working my way down.
It really hasn't stopped raining round here. The rough has been knee deep in places. Winter rules have been extended to the end of May which has never happened before. Green keepers can't get equipment on the courses as they are too soft.
I remember about 16 years back a bit on the BBC news saying we are going to have long dry summers like Spain. Makes me laugh at all the b/s they spout.
