In case you’re not aware, if you click the little chain link in the top right of the Kontakt instance, you can just scroll through the tracks with the arrow key and it’ll show whatever instance is associated with it. Wish I’d learned that one much earlier than I did!

BTW - I would note that in real world use, users would likely achieve twice as many instrument tracks. (sometimes even more) That is because they wouldn't usually all play simultaneously. You'd also be unlikely to use 87 of the same instruments. Some would require more or less CPU overhead.
I think doing this test using 48k would be great since much of the pro world works in 48k, especially film and TV.

Thanks! Apparently the M1 chip is the best for audio as the later ones offer more GPU cores that are not used for audio.

Good video Barry, as a big virtual instrument user I would use more resource hungry instruments like a full Komplete 13 session using Kontakt orchestral , acoustic piano instruments as they use more cpu than Massive. Spectrasonics Omnisphere, Keyscape, Pianoteq etc would all push the cpu more but we get the idea. Realistically unless your doing a huge orchestral score, the M1/M2 systems with 16 to 32 ram would be enough for actual use

here's a topic I think would be very interesting to cover, for you and all of us viewers:
it appears various DAWs aren't able to utilize Efficiency cores (applies to Apple silicon Macs, but also PCs with latest Intel 12/13th gen processors),
so far it seems Apple's own Logic can't for example, on the other hand for ex. Reaper DAW can - so there are massive differences especially comparing 10-core M2 Pro (6+4) vs 10-core M1 Max (8+2)

Test out with mix and mastering tools! The RX repair plugin from Izotope I used, mine is M1 Mini and had system overload, no CPU high!

I am more concerned about having the lowest latency when u record my midi keyboard to play keyscape. What is the lowest latency time i can get with 32 samples buffer ?
Reaper is currently the only DAW that is capable of using all the CPU cores in these Apple silicon machines. You heard that right... Reaper is better optimized than Apple's own software.
But understand, in many cases , its not about utilising the efficiency cores, but how you personally are efficient with your daw workflow..
Theres always the Pro's and Cons.
Reaper wins in many cases, and some not.

Thanks… Any chance of a similar test but using sample streaming instruments rather than virtual synths. A lot of us just use sampled VIs.
How does the memory pressure look like when playing all these tracks? That would show if 16 GB RAM would be enough

I wonder if the m2 pro tested is limited by storage speed. As Apple's partners have been improving NAND density.
For M1 MacBook Air/MacBook Pro 13/Mac Mini, its requires 1 NAND chip to form 256G of storage (half speed), 2 NAND chips to form 512G of storage or more. For M2 MacBook Air/MacBook Pro 13/Mac Mini, its requires 1 NAND chip to form 256G or 512g of storage (half speed), 2 NAND chips to form 1T of storage or more.
As a result, 512g M2 Pro Mac Mini would have only half the storage speed of M1 Pro MacBook 14, and that's even slower than mainstream PC on the market (for example, a $800 laptop).

Very informative Video as always Sir. I am a pro Mixing Engineer working in then Films and Television side. And I mix some indie songs from time to time. I rarely use VSTs as I don't produce Music. I am upgrading to a Mac Mini M2 pro but will 16gigs of RAM be sufficient for my workflow. I have been debating upgrading to 32gigs for a while now.
I am strictly into Mixing and Sound Designing and no Music Production and definetly no Video Editing stuff. So what would you suggest. Honestly 44 instances of Massive is quite impressive in itself but still.
If it’s primarily audio, then 16 is fine if doing heavy VI then 32.
