    I ran 22 minutes freshman year and then started to get into running and I’ve dropped to 18:25 this year. Obviously we’re in different worlds speed-wise but I liked what you said and I wanted to add something I’ve used before
    Direct quote from my old strava post: “I compare myself a little too much; but at the end of the day, I know for a fact I couldn’t do this a few months ago”

    Your video came at the perfect time bro. I just finished a 1500m race yesterday. I was so upset because my goal was to finish podium. Even though I was new to the distance. I usually do longer distances. After months of prep, I still came in 6th place even though I ran a PB time. Not finishing posdium and meeting my friend's expectations made me disregard the fact that I ran an effin PB and that I couldn't of done better even if I wanted to. It made me question how I set my goals and expectations on myself. The fact that I did it for other's validation made me disregard my natural progression in the sport and the reality of growth in running. I used to enjoy gradual progress in my performance, but comparing myself to competition made me lose the enjoyment of slowly improving and joy going out for runs everyday.

    "comparison is the thief of joy." If all you care about is running faster than other people, the times and medals are still gonna leave you feeling empty. The true meaning of success is being happy

    100% progression and success is personal, my girlfriend went out for her 3rd run ever and ran double the distance she ever has before. She was sad because at the end I didn’t seem tired since I was in marathon prep, I tried to explain to her in the same way that comparing myself to Kipchoge I may aswell be walking on my hands.
    Great video Brock!!

    Yeah running can kinda play head games with you. Been a runner all my life and ran some great times. Set some course records. But about 4 years ago I head a guy beat me and he said I would never be as good as him. Still hurts everyday I train. I find myself pushing myself harder since the comment. Also havent run a race since. Dont want to step back in until I can smoke that dude. Its crazy how your mind works. Think Id rather him punch me than for him to say what he did

    There's an old Irish sporting saying, the best hurler is always on the side. As a kid I remember asking my uncle what it meant and he said pretty much what you said. The only person who plays the perfect game is the one sitting on the side of the field criticising.

    Brock, I hope your stress fracture heals quickly. My middle metatarsal in my foot fractured at mile 25 of my first marathon 8 years ago, and that sucked. You'll definitely have to do some PT after wearing that boot, because your hip will most likely get jacked up from the weird walk-roll-limp thing.

    • @TheBrockKelly
      @TheBrockKelly  10 месяцев назад

      Yeah. I’ll need to do some strength work to get everything back to normal. I’m hoping that my swimming I’ve been doing is at least maintain some of my range of motion to where the return to activity won’t be too difficult. But yeah…stress fractures suck.

      @@TheBrockKelly any tips for treading the line between hypersensitivity and getting injured?

    • @TheBrockKelly
      @TheBrockKelly  10 месяцев назад +1

      @@tylerstark8209 hypersensitivity is usually just the day or two leading into a race. Injury is where you’ve got something that’s been bothering you for a week and you can’t figure out what it is. As far as figuring out the difference, I’d say it’s just a difference in timing. If your hip is feeling weird the day before the race, that’s normal. But if it’s been feeling weird for 2 weeks, that’s where you might want to start taking some rest
