Went to see Chuck Berry play at The Ritz in NYC in 1982. About half way through the show Ronnie Wood came out and finished the show with him. Totally unexpected and a great night for my friends and I all about 17 at the time.
You could argue that Chuck Berry was the original singer-songwriter, long before guys like Bob Dylan started showing up with a guitar and playing their own material. "Memphis" is an incredible song in its basic concept, and who else in the old "race records" niche would think up a lyric like, "moving through the traffic like a mounted cavalier"?
