Fragments of Klaus Voormann & Paul McCartney recording "I'm In Love Again" in Hog Hill Mill Studios, Sussex for Voormann's "A Sideman's Journey" project, released in 2009.
One night Klaus was randomly walking down a seedy alleyway in Hamburg, and heard music coming from a club. He went in, the crowd was sparse. He watched Rory Storm complete their set, and then remained to see the following band The Beatles. He was blown away, and became friends with the band. Klaus is perhaps one of the first 'insiders' and has been close to the Beatle organization since!
wasn't Klaus the guy responsible for the original Beatles haircut?
@@Not-so-very-obvious Klaus Voorman, Astrid Kirchner, and Jurgen Vollmer all played a role and there are different stories about the genesis of the haircut, Astrid said she cut Voorman's hair like that to cover his ears, then Stu adopted it, then George Harrison. Jurgen Vollmer says he invented the style as a rebellion against the current styles, and convinced John and Paul to adopt it.
@@SpaceTravel1776 Thank you for the clarification.
Klaus shows the drawings of the Hamburg Beatles and says "Here THEY are!"?? Isnt here YOU are more accurate or is the Billy Shears people right?
Klaus is a true gentleman, he never sold out The Beatles for money, dragged their names through the mud for profit. He's a rarity in these times, a true friend that has stayed loyal to his friends.
God bless You Klaus.
He's done a lot of Beatles art but it's really good and hes definitely earns the right to to do it. 😄
With Ringo suddenly it starts rolling.
He is a great drummer. Indeed.
God bless Paul for saving those instruments.
Seriously, museums all over the world are gonna be trying to get their hands on that stuff. That Stevenson 1980 Harpsichord is something else.
Not only is Klaus a great bass player, he is also a great artist: designing the Revolver and the Anthology covers!
He was on stage at the Bangladesh Concert for George also. and on the John Lennon session, solo album . recently released on Netflix, look for it.
@@bobmckenna5511 -it's funny to think that Klaus also played bass on the How Do You Sleep-song, wich is John' s very arrogant attack agains't Paul.
Why are you referring to him in the past tense?
Indeed, IS not WAS !
Very good bassist. Listen to John Lennon and Elton johns Whatever gets you through the night. Some serious bass going on there !
I love that Klaus can be so natural with Paul. Part of it is that they met before Paul was famous but also Klaus just seems to have that type of personality, genuine and not afraid to be himself with anyone.
crazy4beatles comedy version off song from Airedale
They are like two kids in a candy store but with a vast knowledge of contemporary music....
Right... Paul looks a bit jumpy and uneasy, which isn't uncommon for him.
They’ve known each other since 1960
Love Klaus so much, he actually 1st saw the Beatles in Hamburg & convinced Astrid 2 go see them. They also changed their hair cuts frm the “Teddyboy” 2 what they became famous 4. He has worked with all 4 Beatles as solo artists. Just live him so much. ❤️
Klaus is such a lovely and immensely talented man.
The way he talked about Paul at the end was really cute, you can tell he still holds a real fondness for him in his heart.
He seems to still see that 18-year boy he once knew in Hamburg, when he looks at Paul and somehow that's really sweet.
Clear admiration for him, you can see Paul understands too , he knows it means a lot to Klaus
Paul knows Klaus sees him as that 18 year old kid sleeping under a Union Jack backstage at a strip club. For someone like Paul McCartney that look must be the most precious thing in the world…most people see him a this megastar.
god bless Klaus Voormann, they are all great, but this man melts my heart.
Yes, he seems like a very nice guy and very humble. No surprise that The Beatles love him.
Regarding Paul & all the Beatles: Klause couldn't have said it better: "It was a beautiful time, thank you very much." My sentiments EXACTLY! I feel honored & privileged to have grown up listening to their music starting on the old transistor radios.
yes, i noticed that line too. poignant, sad, but so true. it's been a hell of a ride. thanks john paul george ringo brian stu mal george billy derek neil astrid & klaus .... some great people along the way
@@violettamagotchi310 And Pete Best as well as much as anyone...If you want to see what Klaus saw and that magic he remembers..the clearest window through to that time is Pete Best..read his book The Pete Best Story..it is the story of the Beatles until that first record hit. The other four Beatles..two of which are now gone..became too rich and far removed from those beginnings and the intimacy to what happened back then to really describe it.You can see in Klaus Voormanns face he is still intimate with those beloved memories.
Paul McCartney is not close to those memories. The Beatles Klaus knew were John Paul George Pete and Stu.
WE ARE A MASSIVE CLUB
Hearing those old instruments again was sensational.
+Noe Berengena Listening to Paul play the first 10 seconds or so of Strawberry Fields Forever was surprisingly magical. He played it so precisely after 40 years and it took me right back to the original vibe.
@@anSealgair you'd think those instruments would be in a museum or something. smh.....not faulting Paul McCartney. The studio was ready to dump them w/o a second thought. I realize it's all about business but come on! it's the Beatles we are talking about here. Glad, at least, McCartney bought them to keep in his family.
Billy used his demonic Tavistock-forces to purchase them all.

this demonstrates the value of time. That won't happen again. Treasure it. Learn to recognize it in your life, musical situation or not.
I love it when Paul picks a "McCartney Rose" and gives it to his friend!....so sweet!
klaus has recorded with an amazing group and number of musicians. That's him playing that iconic bass intro on "You're So Vain" by Carly Simon
No kidding? I didn’t know.
Me either.
Correct - when CARLY says “ son of a gun” at the beginning of You’re So Vain she’s reacting to Klaus on bass just riffing/ which they spliced as the song opening
Klaus has had an amazing life!
Son of a gun!
What a great person Klaus is. And so good to see he can have a conversation with Paul as an equal one.
Klaus is protecting "Sir Paul" and his dark secret.
@@olskzeri1476 what is that all about?
Absolutely delightfully nostalgic video.
Paul really is one of God's most beautiful gifts to our world. His music has given so much pleasure - and his personality takes ones mind off the pressures of modern day living.
Love him to bits. Please God keep him young for at least another 20 years.
I totally agree with what you say here. Great comment.
My God are you people so freaking BLIND, this is NOT James Paul McCartney!
@@peterrothfuss6042 And yet Paul's old friend Klaus Voormann gives him a great big welcoming hug and acts as if he's known him for over half a century -- go figure eh? I guess the "real" Paul didn't have any true friends eh? lolol Maybe Carly Simon should put out a new song for the "Paul Is Dead" folks -- she can call it "You're So Dumb"
I always felt like Klaus was really George’s friend first ; funny to see him hanging with Paul..
@@meeeka People are allowed to have more than one friend. Klaus has said that George was his best friend, but that he was friends with all of them.
Klaus was there in the early days and has always been a friend and sometimes fill in bass player with the Beatles. It's nice to see him here with Paul, making music and having fun, just being themselves.
Just like family. Very emotional. I wish Paul would do a record of his favorite songs by John! Wouldn't that be cool!
Paul is a musical genius......makes me proud to be a scouser......how life would be so different if The Beatles hadn't come along.....
The Beatles would have ended in September 1966, if it wasn't for the "Paul" you see here.
its amazing how ringos drums just make every song better
I could watch this stuff all day long.
Klaus, I listened to the entire Lennon-360 interview of you on The Beatles Channel on Sirius XM today. I was driving during the entire show while my wife was fast asleep.
What an incredible life you've had man. I can see why these iconic musicians want to be around you. God bless you!
A McCartney Rose for a dear Friend Klauss. What a nice ending to a long lasting frienship with great memories for Paul & Klauss.
Paul has a strong bond with those iconic instruments they used in their songs. I think it would be difficult for him emotionally to sell those instruments or to have left them behind. Klaus always had a great spirit about him. Glad they remained friends. Paul seems like he’d be a joy to work with. I saw him in Dallas in 2002 and no one in the entire concert hall sat down the whole show. I have never seen that before. Paul is riveting to watch and Klaus covered some good ground musically along the way. Thanks for sharing.
Paul has never been able to process loss. I believe that he has an attachment disorder stemming from this -- the same one which underpins hoarding (a transfer of attachment from people to objects which represent them). That is why he cares so much about preserving these instruments -- he also has Spike Milligan's piano. It is also why he gets so upset when things come up for auction and can be ruthless with people who put things up for sale that he believes should be his (Patti Boyd's having an auction this week, so we'll see if that affects him or not). For him, the people he's lost are never gone so long as he has these objects. That is what I believe anyway. I think the song Junk is best understood in this context as well.
Sir Paul is the museum of his own pop history. Ocassionally he shows his contemporaries how brilliant he is. Good for you Klaus, good for you Paul.
Klaus is such a nice gentleman and such a talent, both musical and visual!
There is something about this video - how they seamlessly work together. The Hamburg connection.
"Sir Paul" didn't have anything to do with the Hamburg years. That was before William have joined (late 1966).
Love watching Paul, Ringo was awesome as usual
Rings is still bad ass. How can one drummer stand out so much crisp and smoother.
Ringo isn't a great "technical" drummer, but he's a great musician because he knows how to make the drums serve the song. It's never about serving himself.
Klaus Voormann, a true artist, a dear friend, and above all else, an absolute Gentleman.. Lary

I'm So Zeni You don't know what Anyone Believes.... Lary
Paul's paradise - he has all kinds of instruments there, and even play them of course ;) He' s a real musician who's doing everything with fun and passion. I love this video!!
ps. Klaus Voormann enjoys all that the most, remembering the old Hamburg/Star Club days. At the end Paul speaks fluently some serious words in german: "Feierabend, wir machen jetzt Ausweiskontrolle! Alle Jugendliche unter 18 Jahren müssen dieses Lokal verlassen."
According to Google's translate tool: "End of work, we are now checking passport! All young people under 18 years must leave this place."
@@bconigliaro
When they were in Hamburg a rival club owner grassed George up to the German old bill and told them he was only 17 and that along with the minor arson incident led him and Paul to be deported back to Britain.
Bad lads dem Beatles.
Klaus was there from before the beginning of the Beatles, just another young artist trying to make sense of the crazy post-war world. If they had been born 18 years earlier they would have been on opposite sides of WWII Instead they're old and dear friends still making beautiful music together nearly 50 year later.
Yes. There have been much more Beatles-members ...
Klaus Vormann, Billy Preston, Pete Best ... and this is William Camphel ...

Duffy Johnson nice observation about the WWII, friend
Two only friends making music, how perfect is that :)
Wow, this has to be my favorite McCartney video so far. The man is so gifted and humble, unbelievable.
That was half a Beatles reunion right there, including a guy who played with all four Beatles in the past, including John Lennon's Imagine album with George Harrison. Nice.
Paul is the most talented musician ever, he rocks all the instruments he plays
He'd be a legend if the only song he ever recorded was "Maybe I'm Amazed."
@@Mandrake591 Maybe I'm Amazed is not written by James Paul McCartney.

I have met Klaus Voormann at a Beatles convention many years ago. He is a very nice guy and of course he has signed my copie of the Revolver album. A true friend of The Beatles before they were famous. I love this footage.
Thank you for making Klaus smile, Paul.
Two phenomenal bass players.
Klaus brought me to tears when he summerised hes time with the Beatles! : (
Great to see Paul and Klaus. Love the origianl instruments. Each has a voice-the challenge is using the voice where it should be used. Love it!
It's so real, it makes me feel like I'm right there with them. Paul is ever so friendly. Beautiful people. God bless them!
One of the best things I seen I such a long time. Thank you so much
What a totally delightful video.. It was so fascinating to see Paul pay the parts to his famous on the original instrument
It's nice when you can see the creative process in motion from someone like McCartney, Starr and Voorman. Good lesson for new musicians that there are some creative individuals you can work with for a lifetime.
Klaus was an Art student when the Savage Young Beatles met him in Hamburg. Astrid too except her eye was photography specifically black and white film nour. They were in awe of Klaus' talents. He even coaxed Astrid to cut their hair! I love these stories. I only hope someone tells the whole bloody lot of them soon! It's getting late early ya know....
Voormann played the bass on the infamous "how do you sleep"...Big hearted Paul have forgiven everyone evidently
It amazes me. I would never forgive something like that.

I like when Klaus shows Paul the old photograph of The Beatles in Hamburg and says to Mc Cartney ." Look Pete Best on Drums ".
I wish Paul would do something with Pete on drums to bring it all full circle before their time on this earth is over.
"Sir Paul" (William) have never played with Pete Best.
Klaus called him 'Paulie' that's so sweet great friends.

Amazing to see these two fellows being such friends after more than 50 years, especially when you consider the amazing life story they share.

Good to know that Klaus is still going strong also today in 2019. We need to hang on to the "Beatles people" as long as we can!
I thought this was a marvellous vid! It was great to see old mates making great music together. Klaus is a great bass player, Ringo's drumming was spot on as usual and Paul played and sang like the genius he is :)
"In 2008, Paul McCartney recorded it again with Klaus Voormann & Ringo Starr; this version appears on Klaus Voormann’s “A Sideman’s Journey“ The song he recorded with Paul and Ringo for this project has an interesting story. It’s the old Fats Domino song “I’m In Love Again” (previously covered by Paul on the CHOBA B CCCP album). The reason for this choice was that this was the first ever song where Klaus tried his hand at playing the bass guitar. Klaus made his debut as a bass guitarist sitting next to the stage at the Top Ten Club in Hamburg, borrowing Stu Sutcliffe’s Höfner 333 while The Beatles performed the song. "
Very touching video...Klaus is a great guy
Fantastic Ringo ... the best drummer ever.
Das hat richtig spass gemacht .... that was really good fun !!!
I was sitting here chuckling away at the size of that sound board they're using considering The Beatles did Sgt. Pepper on a couple of 4 track machines! Also it's really sweet to see the warm rapport between good friends who have known each other almost 60 years.
What an absolutely charming lovely video of a fun day for two old friends
Klaus Voormann is just as legendary as Paul and the rest of the band as he goes back to the early days. He's both an artist (Revolver cover) and a musician. Klaus rocks!
"Klaus Voormann is just as legendary as Paul and the rest of the band..."
Could anything be more obviously untrue than that statement?
I love the sound of the cembalo! 😍🎶
You know what's somehow most telling here? The last 10 seconds when Paul is reciting from memory in German what he must have heard countless times in Hamburg clubs. And he remembers it through all these years. I remember train station announcements in Switzerland from some trips years ago - it's just so random and so true.
This vid is priceless! They had a great time re-living some of the past, & I loved watching it! 😊 Life-long friends right there & it shows. The hugs at the end, beautiful! ✌️❤️

klaus was the first beatles fan ever, discovering them when the Beatles were starting their career in Hamburg, West Germany
Randi Brooks Klaus discovered the Beatles 👍 He went for a walk through the red light district of Hamburg after having a fight with Astrid, and went for a drink in a bar. He then saw The Beatles on stage there. He then went to see them every night for about a week, before telling Astrid and his other friends that they had to go and see this amazing new band 👍
That was a fantastic video!
Klaus was the artist of the Revolver cover. I believe he's the face in the forefront of the illustration.
I saw a documentary about him a little while back, actually he's at the right hand side, a really small photo. He was sort of "ashamed" of doing such thing as putting his own face there :D Klaus seems like an awesome artist, really humble as well.

To answer the Benny Hinn comment - I don't think that John would have cared that Paul recorded some of these old songs. He did a full album of old 50's and 60's songs called Rock 'n' Roll back in the 70's. There's nothing like a bunch of musicians getting together and playing old songs that you love and enjoy playing. It just makes music fun. These guys have nothing prove to anyone, they made their mark in music history, now they do what they do because they enjoy it, not for anyone's approval.
"Benny Hill"?
Lennon ripped off the line 'here come old flattop' on Cometogether, from an old song. The publishers wanted to sue him. The publishers also owned many of the rock classics from 50's - 60's. So Lennon made a deal. He did the rock covers and released it as a great album. The publishers made a lot of money from sales of Lennon's album. Lennon got out of a lawsuit, had a lot of fun recording some of his old favorite songs. And we the listeners got to hear great versions of songs, done by John Lennon.. Kind of a win-win for everyone
