    The Uncharted games especially Uncharted 2 highlight how great linear games can be. When I see the majority of new games nowadays are open world, it makes be believe the current industry has not a clue about what makes a great game and wrongfully think open world is all we want to play now.

      Uncharted franchise is, not a game. It's just not. Anyone who says it's a game, are nongamers, people who don't enjoy gaming but enjoy watching movies or tv shows. Calling uncharted a game is an insult to gaming. Naughty dog has hurt gaming in a way that it's still suffering to this day and will continue to suffer.
      Linear games can be fun, resident evil, metal gear solid, prince of persia, etc...are all linear games, but they are good games bcos they had proper gameplay, uncharted does not have proper gameplay, it's either fake platforming or bland gears of war. And that's pretty much it as far as gameplay goes. The rest is just cutscenes.

    I left a comment on the first Uncharted video in which I mentioned how I only recently played the franchise for the first time. After finishing Uncharted 1 I could totally see the bright future ahead. I could see the flaws in the execution of the first game and I remember saying to myself "There's definitely something here. I feel like more polished action sequences and a greater focus on great set pieces would make the formula of the first game shine brighter." Uncharted 2 DELIVERED. I genuinely feel like there's a huge jump in almost every single aspect when it comes to Among Thieves. The visual presentations is similar when it comes to pure graphics but the actual presentation and visual style is just overall better. Uncharted 1 had a lot of unpolish looking buildings that felt like giant blocks of cement with climbable divots put into them. Uncharted 2 on the other hand puts a lot of effort into making each area feel unique and visually striking. The buildings in Nepal (I think that's the city lol) all legitimately feel real and are so fun to climb around and fight in. The simple improvement of the melee system is basic but it does a great job at making those encounters more fun to play. The action set pieces are GREAT and there's so many of them. Genuinely still some of the most memorable in the story. The incredible train sequence, the exciting helicopter fight in the city that this video does such a great job describing, the yeti fight. They're all great and very memorable! The first game had a few things like this but they were farther apart and some of them sucked, like the jet ski segments.
    Honestly, this video does a great job at detailing some of the complaints I would have with this game. As well as some of the things that make it so great. However, there are some things I disagree with. For example I agree that the puzzles in this game are similarly simple and just follow what your notebook says kind of things from the first game. The whole franchise has that problem in general. I do think though that even if they're not very challenging the puzzles in this game manage to be A LOT more memorable than those of the first game and that's solely because of scope. In the first game you'd enter a room and move around some statues or press some switches. In this game you climb around a giant statue and move it around. Fundamentally they're the same kind of puzzles but they just feel grander.
    Lastly another thing I don't entirely agree with is the story. Don't get me wrong, I think the videos idea that the story retraces a lot of threads from the first game and how the story falls apart if you start picking at it are true. I just feel like it doesn't really matter. Who cares if the story falls apart if you start picking at it, you can do that to some of the most influential and iconic movies of all time. As long as they serve their purpose and feel believable to the gameplay I think its fine. Another thing is just that I feel like the story in Uncharted 2 is just told way better. The beats are all punchier and cleaner. The cutscenes move fast and tell you exactly what you need to know in a more effective fashion then the first game did. Starting the story from half way in and jumping back is a bit of a cliché trope but it works REALLY well for Uncharted. Since a big point of the franchise is trying to get the player to feel like their playing a movie I feel. I just genuinely think the story is told in such a well paced and well directed fashion. That's why I feel like it surpasses the first game.
    Also I agree that the final boss kinda bad but I think it should be given some credit since it's the only final boss in an Uncharted game that feels like a boss. With like an actual mechanic and gameplay and not a mini game or just a shoot out.
    Excellent video though, I can't wait to see what your thoughts on Uncharted 3 are.

    Thank you Amy Hennig for this masterpiece. It shows the power of linear story-driven games. Even though it's linear, it's so enjoyable that you can replay it over and over again. Ironically most open world that in theory are made to be replayed have 0 replayability because the vast world feels hollow and with less focus on the story they are not as memorable (Witcher 3 is the exception).
    It's the perfect mix of action, story, set pieces, characters and pacing. I don't know if Uncharted 2 is the best game ever, but it couldn't be done any better.

    I just got my hands on a PS4 and am playing through the series for the first time ever (played Uncharted 4 first on a friend's PS4 couple of years ago)
    Frankly, the first Uncharted hasn't aged well at all for me, I can see how it would've been amazing back when it came out but in the present day, it felt tedious to get through and I had to push myself through it rather than feeling compelled to continue like the best games do.
    Uncharted 2 on the other hand, has aged like the finest wine. I've spent hours in photo mode alone, the graphics, especially the art direction and the lighting are gorgeous even in 2022/23 and the train section had me so awe-struck I immediately came to RUclips and found this video, currently at Tenzin's village and I can see this video has some spoilers so I'll return once I finish the game but it's already an all time classic in my eyes, but not the first one, no offense to those who enjoyed it when it came out and continue to enjoy replaying it today, just...don't think I'll ever wanna replay that again.

    the way it starts with the hero gut-shot and sitting in a train hanging off a cliff, and you have to escape the train while injured, then you pass out in the snow, then it flashbacks a couple weeks and you play the game up until the moment the game starts with you shot on a train; is fuggin brilliant. and let me tell you, the best one in the series is definitely Uncharted 2, it had the most interesting story and personally its my favorite.
    the first game was really nice, it had its many flaws which in some cases made it insanely difficult but in general for an early PS3 game it was pretty good.
    and the 3rd game felt way too easy, the story just felt like a copy-paste of Uncharted 2 just with more filler chapters for no real reason honestly.
    as for the 4th game, it honestly was on-par as the 2nd game for the most part, though the ending was actually pretty surprising (i didn't think they would fast-forward time in the ending THAT much but i'm not going to spoil it for you if you didn't play it yet).
    i didn't really play the spin-off games (The Lost Legacy and Golden abyss), from what i know Golden Abyss is extremely generic and kind of dull but filled to the brim with the Vita's gimmicky controls for no reason, but The Lost Legacy is actually a pretty decent background story game for Chloe.

      I'll put it like this. When I first played Metal Gear Solid on the ps1, to me it was the game that made me feel like games can be cinematic and felt like playing a movie. When I first played Uncharted 2, it made felt like I was playing a Blockbuster movie which no game made me felt that way till Uncharted 2. The Last Of US introduced character development done right in a video game with excellent pacing that made you fully invested in the characters let alone the story.

    as far as those brute enemies go, they tank damage because you can't just shoot their arms, legs, or bodies. you're supposed to shoot off their helmets, which only takes a couple of bullets to the head, then you can finished them off with a headshot. its interesting that you even show a clip of one of their helmets getting shot off and didn't quite make that connection, considering you were headshotting most enemies in Drakes Fortune.

    Uncharted is my favorite game series not named Zelda. I know its identity is Action, but I kinda wish they would experiment with some role-playing elements and be a bit heavier on puzzles.

    • @whatdupdoh
      @whatdupdoh Год назад +1

      seriously! I was thinking it was gonna be an adventure puzzle game and it was more of a shooter adventure. I think that's because mid-late 2000s shooter games were what was dominating the market. but yeah if they cut out half the gun fights and replaced that with more puzzles and traversing it would be even greater.

    Love this game but yeah that train level is absolutely astounding. Still hard to believe they made this in the early 2000s. I remember playing it for the first time and just being so into it and immersed. Uncharted 2 is really when the games started to feel like an epic journey that when you get to the end you feel exhausted and like you just did everything that Nate went through.

    Most underrated thing about naughty dog is that they have some of the best high difficulty’s out there. I know most ppl play on easy nowadays but as someone who loves a good challenge i appreciate that so much. Naughty dog always slowly builds the challenge as the game goes on and it’s just so good. Checkpoints, enemy placements, enemy types, guns, ammo and level design are all superbly designed.

      I can't play these games on hard, they just lose the flow cause of the difficulty😂

    • @jax6815
      @jax6815 2 года назад +2

      @@dustinakadustin Yeah everyone’s perfect difficulty is subjective. I think the perfect difficulty is when it almost or barely hurts the pacing of the game. Like if I get stuck once or twice in a game that’s fine. At the end of the day who cares if easy is challenging you and your having fun who cares what others think. I just really appreciate when a dev makes the highest difficulty feel fair rather than random. Like cod campaigns always have those parts where you just have to run and hope you make it through and try like 30 times until you get lucky. You would think uncharted with all its Nathan drake moments that they would be the worst games when it comes to that randomness but funny enough they are so balanced. I never feel like the devs overlooked a part and didn’t think about ppl in the hardest difficulty. Whenever I’m like how is drake gonna get out of this one there is always a rocket or something close by where as on lower difficulty’s I might overlook the rocket due to it being so easy I can do it with an ak. I think it’s a huge benefit of linear games that you can legitimately perfectly design encounters like that and NaughtyDog never fails to do just that. I haven’t played last of us 2s so idk how the open world parts are but besides that game all of their games have been almost perfect in terms of keeping the games fair.

    • @dustinakadustin
      @dustinakadustin 2 года назад +2

    All of this was on the PS3. Back then it was the best looking game on console. Until God of War 3 and The Last of Us came out. The presentation, the execution, the dialogue, the action, the sets, the polish, the pacing was unmatched - all of it was top notch. And it still holds up because its entirety worked. The game had such a big impact on me, it was the spark that ignited a firey love for believable characters. Of course nowadays there are better games out there. And people who have played newer games first, will have a different opinion. That is fair. Uncharted 2 is still one of the best games ever made. The editing fits your naration. I enjoyed the video, paying homage to one of my favorite games of all time. However, one observation I made was that young people today are way more sensitive to difficulty in games than the older generations. I played since the 80s haha I'm old, anyway, but we never complained about difficulty in games. We either played over and over until we got better or didn't play it. But we didn't go out of our ways to complain about them. I remember I played UC2 when it first came out in the hardest difficulty and it was that bad. The last boss on the hardest difficulty can be a little annoying but far from really difficult.
