It really was amazing how many wonderful voices there were in the 50’s and 60’s singing this music. I was a boy of 7, 8, 9, years old singing these songs in front of a mirror with an invisible microphone 😂 and still remember all the lyrics and harmonies at almost 70.
Many sweet folks, for sure. It's true that some folks were bent out of shape a little by the Great Depression and WWII. However, that doesn't necessarily mean they were all racist, homophobic, xenophobic, or misogynistic (women haters), like young people think today.
September 24th: Happy birthday R&B-Doo wop singer James "Shep" Sheppard (1935-1970) Thank you and God Bless. RIP....He shares a birthday with Sonny Turner of The Platters who turns 82 today. Thank you, Sonny's Oldies for the upload / the combination of these two classics. Blessings....#keeprockin'....
These oldies but goodies songs were often in my heart and thoughts while walking through Vietnam jungles 69-70 and sitting on firebase bunkers nights on guard duty
thanks for posting,oh such memories of those sat. night dances at berney park, phx,az. love to all those girls i danced with, patsy, maryalice, lupe, gloria. 1963.. i still recall the enchanting smell of her hair as i danced with her. the angst of young love hung in the air.
My parents had "A Thousand Miles Away" and "Daddy's Home" on a box set. I always thought those two songs were related somehow. When I was a kid, I didn't realize they were by the same group. Obviously, "Daddy's Home" is a followup to "A Thousand Miles Away." Do-wop music has always fascinated me, because my parents played it on the records in the house when I was a baby.
My dad was an oldies guy thru and thru.Being a cop in Times Sauare Manhattan from 69-95 he met almost every oldies group when they played or visited.I got the oldies bug from him and love it,im 54 now.
Thank you for keeping these songs alive. Shep passed before I was born but Clarence Bassett was my uncle, and Charlie B. was family to me, they all played apart in writting Daddy's Home, which became the theme song in my life. Lol. I still love it. Thank you again. Let's keep all these songs alive.
I remember dancing to these song . Sunday nigh dance at St Helena's church in the Bronx. Beautiful memories. This is the music of my soul. Thank you for posting this. this.
Reminds of all the times I was away from my oldest daughter when she was a baby then my youngest I came home and would play this song and then Daddys Home still think of those days whenever I hear these songs
You are the greatest for posting this songs men , i am 27 brazilian guy and i listen those musics all my life , thank you for sharing this gems with us , god bless you
.......and that's my Cousin, Al Crump singing tenor with The Heartbeats. He's singing the last high note at the end of "A Thousand Miles Away". In the first picture that's him on the far right and in the second picture, second from the left, between Wally Roker and Shep.
I would hear this song going to school in Mass. and I would always think of him. They did Daddy's Home if really hurt because my parents divorced and I lived with him. I asked my mom why and she said he only wanted me. Dad may you rest in peace 2/21/1983
Love both of the songs! A Thousand Miles Away has a tune that's hard for me to carry. Shep and the Heartbeats were indeed talented to not only sing the melody but harmonize it perfectly! Long live Doo Wop and Rockabilly!!
I love the last line in DADDYS HOME "I'm not a thousand miles away' This of course alludes to THE HEARTBEATS( The end of THE HEARTBEATS is also Incredible!)
On my list.. get the cd...... to me one of the grts pop songs ever. Thanks for info and posting,,, just LOVE this song and group and we need to thank RUclips that this source of information is available.
Same Group different nane...daddys home and a 1000 miles away would on the same album...amazing...thay are the same artist...both great songs. I wish Black groups would sound like this again...it is 60 years old it is 2021 it is cool...
I dont kno y but as a kid I always thought "Greetings" by The Monitors was a prequel to these songs.. I would always listen to them in order, Greetings, A Thousand Miles Away, and Daddy's Home.. Im pretty sure its a whole seperate song unrelated to these lol
Two more great tunes by the Heartbeats are on my channel already. ruclips.net/video/XtKBND8U8RI/видео.html

I agree my friend...

People were so much sweeter then.

Thanks for your service...those were difficult times. I served in the Marine Corps 1971-1973 but never saw action over there.

The singers could really SING back then and we all could understand the words...it was a great time.
Different groups same lead singer. Shep left the Heartbeats and started the Limlights
they are very different groups, their only similarity is James "Shep" Sheppard, being in Hull Records, and both songs principally written by Sheppard.
My dad was an oldies guy thru and thru.Being a cop in Times Sauare Manhattan from 69-95 he met almost every oldies group when they played or visited.I got the oldies bug from him and love it,im 54 now.

I'm sure "Greetings (From Uncle Sam) came out much later in 1966 but I do see the song tempos are the same.
