  • The Limelites had their roots in many earlier groups including the 5 Sharps, the Videos, and others. James Sheppard, lead singer of the Heartbeats, formed the original Limelites in the early 1960s. On this video, the Limelites salute him by performing the Heartbeats’ biggest hit, “A Thousand Miles Away,” released on both the Hull and the Rama labels. It rose to national R n’ B #5 and the Top 50 national pop in 1956. The group here consists of Charles Baskerville, Clarence Bassett (who introduces the song), Pete LeMonier, and “possibly?” a very young Al Handfield (who does an excellent imitation of Sheppard!). We are back to Burlington County for yet another great performance!
