Remember hearing this on Armed Forces Radio right after I got to Vietnam. My g/f had just broke up with me after I spent all my advance pay on her! FML
yes, before the split seat with the console in the middle. Miss those old "bench seats". You could cuddle up to your lover when driving........the good ole days!
When songs had meaning, my years as a teenager 1963-1969 growing up in NYC The Peppermint Lounge, The Brooklyn Fox Theater, The World, WOW we had it all!
I remember how many received their Dear John letters back then. It was always so sad worth worried when your letter would arrive. Many of these songs seemed to bring us love, .and yet worried these guys might kill themselves was worse
The female in this video (1971) was properly still one of the original members, Janet Vogel. She committed suicide in 1980 and was replaced by Cathy Cooper, for two years. Then Donna Groom joined and has been the groups female voice ever since. She also was one of the backup singers for many of the rock and roll acts that were featured on the PBS oldies shows.
Really sad about Janet Vogel; she suffered from depression. The other two males in this performance were original members, so four of the five original Skyliners were in this video, 12 years after it was a hit.
It’s really cool to see Janet Rapp the original female vocalist in a later video of the skyliners. It’s sad that she dies 9 years after this was filmed.
GOD BLESS YOU ALL.......some of the GREATEST music ever recorded.......I grew up with this music running through my soul ! ! ! ! GREAT PERFORMANCE.........I had a 1960 Ford Thunderbird convertible and I was living the dream........THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR THE MEMORIES....
The best era for songs like this amazing song! Songs young teens could slow dance and fall in love to --and in my case "marry the guy I was slow dancing with" #bestmusicbesttimesever
The happy years for me,dad ,mother, sister and the whole family were always together.we had a party every month at home.dance to cuban music and 60ss music ..dad loved country music.tbey have since all gone.im not happy anymore.i paint for them ,for all human kind ,I no longer dance ,I rarely smile .since they went away.i bet they are all waiting for my arrival. The song is beautiful!
This was around the beginning of a doo-wop/50's revival. In two years, this great song would be included on the soundtrack to American Graffiti, and it was a pretty big selling soundtrack. And then came Happy Days, for better or worse. Anyway, Jimmy Beaumont had one unique powerful voice. Janet had a good voice as well but she was the victim of too many cigarettes from North Carolina.
I don't have plans and schemes And I don't have hopes and dreams I don't have anything Since I don't have you I don't have fond desires And I don't have happy hours I don't have anything Since I don't have you I don't have happiness, and I guess I never will again When you walked out on me In walked old misery And he's been here since then I don't have love to share And I don't have one who cares I don't have anything Since I don't have You, you, you, you You, you, you, you You, you, you, you (You)
This has to be a recent find, and it makes it the earliest live (as opposed to lip-synced) video of the Skyliners available, 3+ years before the Clay Cole oldies review that's been floating around for at least 20 years. Just think, the original members (minus Jackie), only 12 years removed from when the song was a hit. Janet is great, and looks happy, and Jimmy hasn't grown his famous moustache yet!. The only earlier live audio recording I know of was from a show at NYC's Academy of Music doo-wop show from 1970. Just wonderful, thank you....
Thank you this is the first time I’ve seen this performance I’m almost 40 and the first time listening to the skyliners was as a boy in the movie la bamba I completely fell in love with their voices it’s crazy how music can bring so much joy to a heart …. I was born in 84 but this was the music I listened to in my youth so strangely these songs take me back 25 years sitting in my grandmothers house watching pbs doo wop specials then many acts we’re still comprised of their original members but after many turns of the calendar pages many are gone now including Jimmy 🥺🥺🥺. RIP Jimmy his music will always live through me
The ORIGINAL Skyliners were Jimmy Beaumont (lead), Janet Vogel (soprano), Wally Lester (tenor), Jackie Taylor (bass voice, guitarist), and Joe Verscharen (baritone). Four of the five are seen here in this video. Jackie Taylor didn't join them when reunited. He is the only original member still living, as of Feb. 2024. The 4 singers seen here have all passed away.
This is fantastic. Love the skyliners. I would say that since I don't have you could be the signature song for doo wop like the girl from empenema was for Bossa Nova. Thanks for sharing 👍
That's the only time I ever heard her miss that note and she knew it, shaking her head afterward. That's a really tough note, not many can hit it; Donna Groom comes pretty close.
Some of the strangest camera angles. Totally distracting from the great performance. This is where the director thinks he is more important than the performance.
That female vocalist is really good but sometimes even the best singers just can't pull it off for one reason or another. She almost hits the high note at the end but she didn't quite make it. Sounds like she initially hit the note for a second but then her voice falters. But it happens to everyone sometimes in live performances. Jimmy Beaumont sounded excellent and so did the whole group!
That's Janet Vogel, who was very talented and sang some leads with the group in their heyday, including "I Can Dream, Can't I." Yes, I caught that, but I can certainly forgive her, as I'm sure that note must be very difficult for anyone to hit, and you have to remember that she was a natural alto, not really a soprano, with an unbelievable range (and still I bet it took them a few takes to record it!).
I thought she did great, actually. Again, a very difficult note to hit. Yes, I know -- tragic. Mental health awareness for things like clinical depression was not then what it is now.@@grouchosays
I saw Jimmy and the last line up with him. Sarasota shortly before he passed. Sadly, he was in bad shape and I just don’t know how he got through it. I think Donna Grooms sang Janet’s part. Donna has been a singer in many of the PBS oldies shows.
Out of respect, decency, and compassion for the late legendary Janet Vogel, please take this piece down. She misfire’s here on her famous ending vocal . For every very RARE performance she didn’t hit the final vocal note, she AlWAYS hit it the rest of the time for years!!
No I won’t, maybe once the video producers release all the footage they have of this music instead of being greedy. It’s incredibly rare, and keeps her legacy alive. Cancel what you want don’t cancel my music
@@peternewman1179 I didn’t have the luxury of seeing these performers at their prime and many people have not either. This footage is very rare I’ve had no one else comment negatively on her performance, missed notes happen. Leaving out the ending falsetto even the missed note would be an injustice to her. Shes already pretty much lost in music history let’s not cancel this video and leave her there any longer. She deserves the exposure
If Joe Rock and Jimmy Beaumont were in this discussion they would BOTH want it removed. At least fade the audio down on Janet’s last phrasing. Even Janet herself would not like to be exposed like that. A quick fade down before she falters the note would fix it.
Jesus remember when people could actually sing! Those times will never be repeated! So glad I lived through them!
all things possible with Jesus Christ
Awesome talent. Now that's real music!
The Great Janet Vogal❤
They Don't Make Them Like This Anymore! ... 🎶💃🕺🎶💃🕺🎶
Thank you for the Memories!
After so many years the group is still sensational. That song is forever etched for times to come. Wonderful Skyliners.👍🌟✨💫⭐✌️
Real Music that touches ones Heart & Soul.
Jimmy Beaumont of Western Pa God bless his soul

I broke up with my boyfriend while he was in Vietnam and regretted ever since. But we got back together 39 years later.
Her loss. Thank you for your service.
One of my favorite songs. Reminds me of driving down the street next to your loved one in a beautiful classic car, preferably a Ford Skyliner!!!🎶🚗💯

I agree❤❤❤❤
No, it doesn't get much better. Although, I think GN'R may have done it. Great song.

A very rare presentation of Jimmy Beaumont and the Skyliners with the talented Janet Vogel. Thank you for posting.
Anytime, as a fellow doowopper any footage like this is gold! I’m hoping more comes our
Best darn footage of the original Skyliners I've been lucky enough to see and hear.
Oh my God!! I loved it! This is absolutely beautiful 🖤👏👏👏

Thats truly inspiring. Such a wonderful song and group. Very sad for Janet Vogel.

Jimmy nailed it, even after all these years
It wasn't after that many years. 1971 seems like eons ago, and it was only 12 years after the record. These guys were barely in their 30s!
I can’t believe how much this affects me. None of us an any younger. Thank you
