Excellent info on learning the OSMO, even with very little film/photography knowledge. The explanation of each setting and option is in-depth and easy to understand.
Great tutorial, my recommendation is to set your white balance to what you are filming. Having set to auto works but when a camera is set to auto it can decide to slightly change color in the middle of a shot. TY
Hi Tom, thanks for the video. There's a couple of things I don't really understand. Shooting NTSC in PAL countries seems like a strange thing to do. If I'm shooting a film to be shown on a 50Hz TV why would I shoot in NTSC at 30fps? Are you sure that shooting in UHD and downresing to HD improves quality? The bitrate remains 60Mbps so isn't the signal just compressed four times as much? Lastly, I'm not sure if I understand your explanation of D-Log. The standard image used by the Osmo must equate to REC 709; so D-Log is an approximation the LOG signal used by pro cameras. By flattening the gamma curve D-Log allows for more information to be stored in the dark and light areas of the picture. This effectively gives the camera more latitude - protecting detail in highlights and shadows - at the expense of requiring a grade to be performed on the film before it can be shown. Night shooting with the Osmo is a problem. I find that the image at ISO 3200 falls apart quickly due to the low bit rate and the colour bit depth being a paltry 4:2:0. I have to try using ISO 800 as you suggest.
Do you know if the Osmo and Osmo+ use the same kind of fan? I have both cameras but the fan broke on my Osmo+ and I would like to bring that on a holiday in a coulpe of days.
+Robert Shaver I heard this is a clear sign of a psychotic disorder, to have be confused with common symbols. The cloud symbol is definitely a cloud and the sun symbol looks like a sun, I'm sorry to say. Just joking you're right, good spot!
Hi Tom. Thanks for this. I'm going to use these tips for a lot of my filming. I'm practicing now. I'm going to do some filming at an RV (campervan) show soon. I was wondering if it would be better to use a sharper setting in this case.
Hey Tom, been a subscriber for a while now but I can’t find any info about using my ipad mini in portrait mode with this setup. Can you tell me how to get into portrait mode cause my ipad mini doesn’t fit in landscape mode. Thanks.
In your camera setting, under white balance your icon for sunny and cloudy are reversed. Sunny having the icon of cloud and cloudy having the sun icon..
I learned a lot by watching this. You can see the few videos on my page filmed with the Osmo (Circle Jerks, Normal Remix, Late for Christmas) and our settings definitely were not perfect lol. Thanks for the tips. This is going to help a lot.
Nice video! If I compare d-log in video with d-log in photo-mode: photomode looks much better, the skintones are so red in video-mode. Do you experience the same? It supposed to look much more flatter. Thanks!
Nice review. Just one little mistake. The EV values do not always show the correct exposure. For example - the human skin is correctly exposed at around +1 1/3. So if you're pointing it at someone's face and it's showing a value around 1 1/3, then you have a correct exposure. Hope I was helpful. :)
Hi Tom. Great tutorial. I could not get my Rode Video Micro external mic to function and got a tip from an Osmo guy. Just for information for anyone interested you need to go into Camera tab, Audio control, scroll down and activate "Record audio". My question is are all the settings saved for the next usage of the Osmo ??
Good move you I'm going to use the Osmo to record my wedding in the Bahamas this year so I'm trying to find the perfect setting for bright Beach and low sunset filming.
Vielen dank, Tom. Do you have some instructions as to when to use the 4:3 aspect ratio of either the Phatmom 3 Pro or the Osmo in order to take advantage of the entire sensor? Is that for doing things like shooting to produce HDR pics using RAW format, etc?
I've seen in forums that while recording the Osmo, as is standard breaks up videos into 4gb files. The issue some people are noticing is that in between finishing one file and starting the next there is about a 2 second gap where all footage is lost. This happens at around the 10 minute mark on 1080p recordings and the 4-6minute mark on 4K recordings. Have you experienced this issue at all?
Hi Tom, thanks for you video. I am a amateur. In your video, you mentioned that it's better to use NTSC even from a PAL country. Could you advise how to convert it for best quality for editing to match my other PAL videos? Thanks.
Ich denke wegen deinem Akzent bist du Deutscher ich hätte mal ne frage wo ist der Uterschied zwischen dem Phantom 3professional lightbridge und dem phantom 3proffesional Wlan?
Hi , Thanks for making this video :) On my shoe string budget , I'm planning to use a LED Batten (Two of them) which is 20W 50HZ to light my setup . Will shooting in 60HZ NTSC at UHD with Osmo , help show no flickering ? Thank you :)
Thanks tom - super helpful. I take most of my videos (or aim to) during offroad / safari trips in the desert here in Dubai. I'd like to take slow-motion clips as well, would these settings work for a super bright afternoon and a less bright early evening? What's the preferred / recommended setting for me to be able to have decent slow-motion clips? Thanks
+Little LoveBug Photography / Cinematography Yes, you should. But be careful. You have to avoid the flickering that can be caused by electric light sources. Use a safe shutter speed and set everything else as shown in the video and you'll be able to film with 30fps in a PAL country. Stay tuned!
+Tom's Tech Time Hi Tom, the tutorial says it's best to shoot at a shutter speed of 60 for movies shot at 30fps. But to avoid flicker, we have to lower the shutter speed to 50. So the verdict is that it's best to use a shutter speed of 50 instead of 60 for most cases to avoid flicker, right? Is flicker only a problem in dark shots? In which case the rule would be to shoot with a shutter speed of 60 during the day and 50 during the night. Did I miss something?
As usual, a great video. Thanks. I am going to Cambodia next week and this country is listed as using SECAM. Is this the same as PAL? What does the Auto in Anti flicker do?
+Ivar Johansen I think Secam is 50hz as well. Again, a little complicated, but doable. The Auto Antiflicker? It simply never worked for me... I would make sure and choose a setting myself. If you want to make a hundred percent sure you can of course choose PAL. But you won't get 30fps that way... Stay tuned!
Auch Anti-Flicker auf 50hz wenn man in einem Pal Land lebt mit NTSC? Und wie verhält sich das bei 1080 mit 48/60 fps? Muss ich da etwas beachten? Gruss
Hello Tom, I want to make a movie using the Osmo plus and footage from my DJI Spark. What is the best osmo video camera setting to be compatible with the spark footage
Hello tom, I will be looking at the p3 range and looking for preferences of what's a better one to buy standard or advance don't want waste money on something that has very little limitations is the advanced a better by thanks
+Dji Leon Hey there, in your case I would rather compare the DJI Phantom 3 4K (has the same range as the Standard but a 4K camera) with the P3 Pro. I do not recommend getting the Standard. Because of their 10th anniversary DJI dropped the prices and I would look forward to a UAV that supports 4K. Get this one: click.dji.com/_9NUClUM4tMlQyVw or the Pro version! It's really a good deal! Stay tuned and fly safe!
+Tom's Tech Time so do think the advanced is the one to get would not have money to buy the pro is the advanced a good buy or not I'm sorry for repeated question but I think you didn't understand me sometimes that happens I hope that what I have said is clear thanks
+Dji Leon Well, it depends. Do you want to have a high quality camera or a high quality flying experience? High quality camera is the new Phantom 3 4K (or Pro) and awesome flying experience is the P3 Advanced. It's a great machine for sure. The only con is that it doesn't offer 4K. But don't forget to buy it now due to the awesome discounts available right now: click.dji.com/_9NUClUMl_YXlrqn
mp4 is for web ready or share ready and mov is better for editing. Not mac or windows compatibility. As mp4 has higher compression rate, mean more artifacts.
Hey Tom, love the videos! Keep it going! Quick question. I'm shooting timelapse with Osmo. I have it on orientation lock and on tripod but the camera slowly drifts. Have you experienced this? If so how do you fix it? Gracias amigo.
Hey Tom, been watching your Osmo videos and I am very impressed, most helpful. I have a question regard video play back, when reviewing footage, I would see a line of interference for half a second or so, the interference is a greenish blue static line on the horizon of the video play back. It came up 4 times during a 13 minute video. I took screen shots, the temperature was below 25 degrees Celsius, shooting at 1080p. Do you know or have any idea of what this could be? Thanks
Hi Tom... Just bought a Dji osmo yesterday,,,i need some help...when I record video...then I play back...it always play and freeze like 0.001 sec then play again then again freeze for 0.001 sec and keeps going on even i re record a new video again...can you kindly share your experience please....thanks very much
to bad the android version is not so good i live in europe so i have pal. you can shoot at ntsc .but you cant set to 50 hz it always want to shoot 60 hz if i selelct 50 hz it jumbs back to 60 hz . is this a problem ?and why this is happend.it always jumbs also back to 60 hz in pal.
BIG PROBLEM : How could you fix it? Its camera turns on when I move.. I want tı go ahead but it does not do that. Could anyone say how could I fix it? Thank you...
Tom, great video!. I just got the Osmo the other day. I do not understand what the difference is in terms of anti-flicker between filming in a PAL vs NTSC country? I live in USA, but I am going to Europe. If I leave it on 60Hz, will it look bad when I come back to USA to download and view my movie? What is the Hz frequency measuring, isn't it the current in the country? If you are using a battery and not attached to wall current, why should it matter where you are when you film, as long as it is produced in an NTSC country?
craig bennett I know its been a year and you probably would have figured this out by now, but I would still answer in case it helps somebody. For filming in countries like the US that has an AC supply frequency of 60Hz, one has to record in multiples of that to match the wave. He may shoot in 50Hz and not realize it then but when he gets the footage to his computer he will see flicker due to difference in the frequency of the lights operating in AC and his recording frequency. Similarly in PAL countries, he has to record in 50Hz or multiples of it to match the AC supply frequency in order to avoid any flicker. Hope that helps
Thank you for a very informative video , I think it will help me a lot. I am having issues with the quality of my videos that I upload to youtube. So at least I will now have better settings to start with.
Excellent info on learning the OSMO, even with very little film/photography knowledge. The explanation of each setting and option is in-depth and easy to understand.
Seeing the footage of Jerusalem really made me miss the country. Some of the best four months of my life! Thanks for the details!
Thank you very much Tom, it was very helpful. I kinda forgot that I had this camera, and forgot all the settings. Good refresher!
Does this gimbal have a manual focus
Yes . It has a separate focus wheel that can be added.
Great tutorial, my recommendation is to set your white balance to what you are filming. Having set to auto works but when a camera is set to auto it can decide to slightly change color in the middle of a shot. TY
I agree. I ussually let auto wb find the proper balance then switch to manual and set it.
When you shoot log you usually expose to then right to get rid of the noise in the darks. You expose to the middle why is that?

nice tutorial i like it so much, i will try to record some videos tomorrow and hope for some advices from a well expert guy like you
Can someone explain to me why my phantom 3 advanced is only going 500 meters until I loose signal? I'm in my neighborhood! Any advice??
How do you reduce glaring of the lights during a night shoot? Any recommendations?
can you go over the other specs like how fast your gimbal moves and those type of settings please

can you shoot in flat picture style?
Very nicely done, Tom. I'm thinking about getting an OSMO for interior real estate video. Toss up between that and a Zhiyun crane.
any tips for northern lights and stars settings
