    This is my 2nd Keurig coffee maker of this model. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf The first worked fine for more than 2 years, and I could still get a decent cup of coffee out of it if I fiddled with it when I decided to replace it. The problem I had with my first unit was this: When attempting to brew a cup of coffee, the unit would either keep brewing until the coffee was undrinkable or it would not run long enough and the coffee produced was way too strong. I cleaned the unit as best I could but it did not help. So in the end it was just too much trouble to get a good cup of coffee out of it, so I decided to replace it with a new one, which has been working great since I unpacked it.

    I suggest you buy a grinder with scale, mine is Rommelsbacher EKM 500. This will ease your routine. I fit 17 grams in my portafilter with the Dedica. The brew is 1:2 and takes the recommended 30 seconds. - My water is filtered by reverse osmosis. This is highly recommendable and gives the coffee a much fresher taste.

    Very pleasing video to watch. I like the aesthetics a lot.
    For your coffee setup i would hightly highly recommend some modifications:
    1. Get an unpressurized basket or even better a new (bottomless) portafilter.
    2. Unfortunately you will have to get a new grinder :( The KG521 can't grind fine enough to produce a decent espresso. Maybe some super dark roasted beans might work but you will be very limited.
    3. Weight AFTER grinding unless you get a single dose grinder. You lost 2-6g this way (the KG521 has a lot of dead space).
    4. You want to have a ratio around 1:1.5 - 1:2.5 of dose to espresso in the cup (e.g. 14g should give you ~28g coffee) and when timing i would aim for a little slower because of the pre-infusion time of the EC695.
    5. Before making the first coffee, always do an empty run (without the portafilter installed) of water into you cup. The temperature of the water after turning on the machine will otherwise be too inconsistent and it also helps with cleaning the machine and the water pre-heats your cup.
    6. (optional) If you want to make any milk based drinks you should replace the panarello wand. An intermediate solution is to just take the panarello off and lock the plastic wand below into place using a zip tie. The panarello can't produce microfoam, you will always get too fluffy, big bubbely milk.

      Thank you very much for your comment, the tips and advice ;-)
      I agree with everything you said. Since the video was shot, I changed my process (stay tuned for a new video)
      I am currently planning to buy a bottomless portafilter. My issue is the grinder as you said. It does a great job with my current setup but that means I have to replace it if I want a finest grind coffee. For the price, I would rather prefer to change both of my machines (and get a combined grinder + machine with unpressurised baskets at once).

    • @sebimaurer
      @sebimaurer 2 года назад +3

      @@coffeetime5549 Yeah getting a grinder for the machine which makes sense and isn't twice as expensive is hard. I can recommend two options:
      1. The Graef CM800. It's the only electric grinder i know of which is about the price of the EC685/EC695 and can grind fine and evenly enough for espresso but it also struggles with lightly roasted beans as you would typically want to grind those a bit finer to get a good extraction.
      2. A hand grinder. This is obviously more work but for the price you can get really nice ones which enables you to create consistent results. Maybe not so great for filming though.
      Otherwise you would really have to look into something which is >350$ and than you are absolutely right and it makes sense to also invest into an espresso machine of about the same price.

      Thank again for the information. To be honest I am not on a budget. A few months ago, I wanted to buy a new coffee machine as I was tired of my Nespresso, making bad expresso. I then found out that the Delonghi EC695 and its grinder could work well. For lots of people, it makes very good coffee and I have to say it changes a lot from my last machine.
      However, I am wondering if maybe I should upgrade the whole setup instead of making small improvements (milk wand - unpressurised basket…). Maybe it would make sense to buy a more expensive machine (with an integrated grinder or not). I am currently looking at the question at all angles.
      Thank you anyway for you answer. I will definitely have a look at those grinders

      It takes time and effort before I was able to make a good espresso. Also if pressurised basket, it is way more difficult to achieve the perfect timing (it makes sense to weight and count with unpressurised baskets).
      But to answer your question, I used the tamper to tamp hard enough and I used the grinder to the finest position. If it is overtime, I would recommend to grind coarser or to tamp less. Normally you do not need to tamp too much with pressurised filter.
      Bear in mind you’ll need to practise before you can achieve a good espresso.

The espresso that I get is not of the quality of a super professional machine that cafes use, obviously, but I think that you still get pretty decent espressos. I think a lot depends on the coffee beans as well, their roasting and grinding size. I get really varied results. But I like it. My point is: maybe try switching up the coffee as well, not only the method to find what works best for you. Ahh!!! An edit: I did modify the heat setting on the machine. I prefer it on the highest setting if I use lighter roasts. Just something to bear in mind that can be adjusted as well.

I have seen people on the Internet using it with a non pressurised basket and it seems to work well, even if it is not the best. You can put any basket you want in this grinder (51mm). How much espresso (volume) you get at the end? Maybe it's the cup size and video perspective, but by default mine seems to pour quite less than what I see here, thus often end doing pressing 2x the 2 cup for what's meant to be a single person's espresso. Thank you!

    • @NahueFederico
      @NahueFederico 2 года назад +1

      Don't worry about the volume, what matters is the weight, because with the volume you're not taking into account how much water, coffee and air there is inside your espresso. Typically an espresso should be between a 1:2 ratio (which means that the extraction should weigh 2 times the amount of coffee you put inside the basket) and 1:2.5. In this video the ratio is 1:2.7 (38g/14g), which is more close to a lungo than an espresso. If you have a scale, try to measure the weight, and if not, just go with whatever quantities give you the best tasting espresso according to your taste.

  • @franswiersma8498
    @franswiersma8498 2 года назад +8

    Hi. Nice video. I have the vintage model. I've tried almost every bottomless basket around :) and turned back to original pressurised one eventually. This machines are not meant to make non-pressurised espresso. Look, creame, smeel is way better with non-pressurised but tastes awfull. Even whit a latte, it is undrinkable for me. I saw you want to try bottomless. Try it if you wish. I suggest try 53mm. 51 ones are very bad quality and has a conical shape. Tamper stucks or doesn't fit as it goes down. But if you are really into making great espresso, buy an official 58mm with a good grinder. Have a nice day.

      it tastes like espresso should, i guess you are jsut used to fake crema like nespresso. Real Espresso is a bit bitter and its intense because its fresh and the pressure comes from the espresso instead of the small hole. Pressurized portafilter makes it under extracted which tastes less bitter but more sour and thin yellow crema instead of thick hazelnut. I had E61 machine 14 years ago, i still have it but it need intense cleaning inside before i can use it again but the EC685 with bottomless portafilter and manual grinder Timemore C3 ESP tastes exactly like my E61, yes its bitter but thats normal. I never had an espresso whitout any bitterness. Its like dark choclate, its always a bit bitter.
