Totally with you on starting over on a plant because the juvenile version is your preferred version. It’s why I don’t bother with moss poles. I don’t care about extending the root system. Once a plant outgrows the space I have available when it’s supported by discreet stakes, I’m probably out of space period and it’s time to take it down to a more manageable size.

F yeah the tortum. I love this plant and why is it not more popular? I want a huge tortum one day. So underrated. Beautiful plant. An offensive fern yes lol! I’ve managed to kill 2 for stupid reasons but I’m on 3 and I’ll buy as many as I can to keep this in my life. I feel it will not tolerate low temp and grows best in medium house light and ya a stake or pole would probably bring out the best but its natural chaos is beautiful

I wonder if the red backs help absorb some of the green toned light that's is bouncing off of the leaves below it. It's own leaves or other plants growing amongst it. Hmm, interesting.
Orrrrrr, maybe the light that is hitting the leaves illuminates the red backs and for some reason it makes that heavily filtered light more absorbable? Is that a word 😆
The red color is from a pigment called Anthocyanins which absorbs the remaining light that passes through the leaf. It also can act as camouflage from leaf-eating insects, which are colorblind to red.

Hm I gotta say I never let my plants get to full dryness, not even my Euphorbia if I can help it. If your plant is showing signs of stress, well it means it's not doing great. I water my rhipsalis when it is mostly dry and it is doing just fine.
I totally understand your love for Syngonium. I've turned Info a bit of a collector and varieties like steyermarkii, auritum, erythrophyllum are really awesome as well.
When it comes to plant care, if it works it works 🤷
