What a lot of folks don't realize is this man was probably the single most influential guitarist to the blues-based hard rock transition there was. He is the bridge between the old-school Chuck Berry sound and the 70's Angus Young, Jimmy Page, Billy Gibbons, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck generation, etc. Freddie King's cannonball assault sound on that Gibson was the catalyst for countless white 1970's classic hard rock bands. The blues ambassador to hard rock. They should honor him with a monument in Texas.
Aaron 'T-Bone' Walker was the Lester Young 'Prez' of blues guitar. Then Chuck B. with the rock-a-billy, but Freddie brought the funk . Buddy Guy early days. Then the Brit invasion and Jimi made people forget the pioneers. I was friends with another legend: Hubie Sumlin ( who Keef and Eric do give plenty of credit ).
He was the king of all kings in music! Saw him when I was 16 at Woodstock. Got hired on a ship from Iceland to the USA and was lucky to get back. But what a journey!! Now I am 64 and I still think there is no one like him.
My fav blues performance. Terrific! Freddie's using a thumb pick and index finger pick. He left us too soon and those lapels carried him away on a gentle breeze to a better place. Thanks for posting!
Badass bass line, nice organ fill, Freddie's guitar and voice...topped off with a random guy with antlers on his head roaming around in the back. I'm satisfied!
Yes we do!! SRV Rev Willie G Johnny Winter T Bone Freddie and Dimebag FN Darrell ! And in reference to the bullshit comment by mi channel it was in Sweden asshole!!
Really interesting how musicians like Freddie managed to learn all those blues licks, notes, and solos! Now, we have cellphones, computers, teachers, tvs and stuff!
Dan, ain't it? I'd be as content as can be doin' just that! I can jam on guitar the few John Lee Hooker riffs I finally mastered all day long. It's enough for me, but to rip off any of Freddie's licks in his vast repertoire would be Heaven on Earth!
I developed a blues style listening to BB, Otis Rush, Albert King, Elmore James, Muddy Waters, SRV, Lightnin Hopkins, Clapton, Hendrix, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins. It wasn't till much later that I actually heard Freddie believe it or not. I organically developed a style almost exactly like his without actually ever hearing him...... I played Tore Down for years in clubs and got good response.
damn asking god who created you for different talents is pretty shameful. only asking god for what you want and nothing more? seems your into religion for the wrong purpose LMAOOOO join the chain gang
I saw Eric Clapton in Ft. Worth in 1974 and Freddie and his band were warming up and then Freddie came out for Eric's encore for a little head cutting contest. Clapton didn't stand a chance.
Saw him play in '74 at the UCR gym, opening for Elvin Bishop. Such intensity! I'd never experienced anything like it, before. I realize the Blues scholars prefer his earlier work when he played primarily instrumentals and wielded a P 90 equipped L. P. They criticize his later material, but I simply prefer the tone he wrenched and cajoled from his semi-hollows. That vibrato. . . damn ! ! !
That's right -- he was the youngest of the 3kings (albert and BB), but he the most powerful. The biggest badass to ever play the blues. I can't imagine having to face him in a head-cutting contest. You'd be blown out of the water just by his stage presence alone, before he even got warmed up.
I got to see Freddie King perform live before his passing in 1975. He was amazing and he was the first person I ever saw playing guitar behind the back of his head.
I absolutely love the tone he got out the rig he's playing through in this video; i.e. Gibson ES-335 probably run through some type of 85 watt Fender amp (Fender Quad). No guitar effects, just 100% incredible tone of a Gibson guitar through a Fender amp. Sizzles and just drips w tone. Just AWESOME.
In my youth I heard a lot of ole guitar pickers and harp players say that' the blues had a baby, and they called it rock and roll". Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, submitted for your edification, The man that brought that baby to life, right here. Tearing it up.
I would just like to say Freddie is probably my favorite blues guitarist from those days...but as a old man who don't know where he fits in the world anymore, that suit! Especially the shirt collar! Times Will NEVER be that cool again
I danced with his wife and smoked boo with the band in the alley at the old 6th street blues bar in Austin in the 70’s. What a trip. Cockroach Blues was always one on my favorite. It always looks like he’s squeezing the notes out of his beautiful guitar. I think the bar was Antones. It was the only bar in 6th street at the time and except for me and the owner there were no other white people. As a blues fan from my formative years, nobody could keep me away and I always felt right at home. Austin before it was weird. B
Freddie definitely need a Big Legged Woman to with that big collar shirt. What would have been great was if he had that big leg woman from Bobbie Rush on stage! Great performance and recording!
Filmed in Stockholm, Sweden. Soliden stage at Skansen. Visable somtimes in the background is the Oppopoppa logo, it was a television show in the seventies.
saw Freddie play this at the Starwood in 1974. it was my 16th birthday and my older friends wanted to show me what really is what. yeah, they showed me.

Paul, not a lot of people know this. I didn't but when I began to watch his videos, I knew I had found the "missing link" so to speak.
Freddy was another victim of the road. Dead at the age of 42.
Texan here, agreed!
Man and men owned it...! #Texan proud
This group has it all...Freddie king, guy with antler helmet, dueling keyboard players....a hassidic jew and a sound man from the apollo circa 1968
*_That collar is Legendary!_*
Nobody.....and I mean NOBODY....can compete with those collars or his guitar playing skills. He's the Collar KING !!!!
Sly and the Family Stone had some solid competitors but I think you're right.
they probably doubled the amount of fabric needed for the shirt!
Collar got its own time zone.
And zip code. lol :)
Lol.
is it a collar anymore when it drapes your shoulders like a cape? lmao dude had that Ric Flair wooo!
I thought he was wearing a cape like Elvis at first .
I think these were called “butterfly collars” back in the day, but Freddie’s is a whole damn condor!!
That collar is absolutely astounding...
Classic blues from back in the day..."We go together like red beans and rice." Thanks..
EVERYTHING is bigger in Texas!
It's about the Guitars in the fabric
Now THATS a Leisure Suit! The BEST a man can get!
Freddy was definitely the most funky of the 3 Kings,👈😎👍🇺🇲🎸🎶
Wow. There's a thread going at The Gear Page about this exact subject right now.

How could anyone give a thumbs down on the great Freddie King ? Some people have no sense of taste !
Like Freddie's taylor? :-))

RIP Freddie King (September 3, 1934 - December 28, 1976), aged 42
You will always be remembered as a legend.
This cannot be played loud enough!
Yet… I keep trying.
My speakers nearly blew up. Yes it can be played loud and the louder the better.
I need a louder Amp. I keep trying. I keep breaking my strings! Haha!
the more you turn it up the closer you come to the way he liked it .

The kind of video that chills and thrills me in the face of a person's genius.
The Texas Cannonball never fails to amaze! Listened to him for 52 years now and I never get tired of it.
Keep the big legged woman, I NEEDS that shirt he's wearing!
probably one of the best videos ive seen in the last 60 years
My favorite out of all the King bluesmen. Great guitarist. Freddie died way to young.
almost exactly 50 years since I saw Freddie as a teen. thanks Freddie, I had some learnin' to do.
Outstanding, Clean tone, great voice as well
This might be my favorite live performance of all time. The bass line is just ...hoyl shit badass!
His brother on bass. He actually suffered a mental breakdown after Freddie died, he was so devastated at his loss.
😥
I was so fortunate to see him play. What a great talent. Love his style.
Only discovered Freddie a couple of months ago I can not put him down just loving it folks all the way
30 years ago, the week I discovered him was also the week I bought my first guitar. 👍
The three KINGS. Freddy, BB and Albert. Today you've learned something.
We make good Guitarists here in Texas.

what is head-cutting?
A friendly guitar battle.
bcruze Freddie himself is a musical wizard I wouldnt advise anyone to accept any head cutting with him. Even his singing just comes so easily.
That movie "Crossroads". You know, Steve Vai and Ralph Machio. They was "head-cutting" except it was all Steve Vai really.
except the Ry Cooder parts, idiot
Man, that kicks ass!!! Brutally soulful! \m/
Absolutely AMAZING…He should be as popular as any guitarist who’s ever existed 💯
He's got all the li licking

Freddie King. Without words he was a monster guitarist showman singer. Mean mean string bender
that voice! that guitar! YEAH!!!
This crowd didn't deserve that killer performance.
None of us deserves it.
It looks like an old ladies' book group meeting outside in a garden. What is Freddie even doing there?!
