Freddie was the whole package. Killer gospel-style vocals, monster guitarist and almost in league with Willie Dixon as a song-writer. He had more than 20 crossover hits during a time when Black musicians weren't played on most stations and 5 of those were instrumentals. He was, possibly, the first major bridge between true blues and modern rock.
Freddie is the King!...I never knew he did this song...always knew him for his Blues stuff..this blew my mind!! He does the song justice!! R.I.P. Freddie! and Albert too!!
this era was some kind of pinnacle in musi, and this performance is up there with the best. all those guys that came up, learnt their trade and paid their dues in the late 50's and early 60's all hit a real maturity around the same time. guys like freddie, dr john, the meters and countless others. what an era, and what a sound. RIP Freddie King, i hope there's regualr poker nights in heaven...
It's absolutlety amazing how he gets involved with the atmosphere created by him and the other musicians during the performance. It seems like he takes a quick trip outside stage, but then he comes back and starts talking to the audience, just to be sure that he is really there, back again.
Can you imagine being at a performance like this live? I truly believe it would change who you are from that date forward... its so very moving even just on my cell phone
Thank you Freddie King, this song has made me strong (and weep) when my woman had "been gone" due to her illness for so many times over the past decades - ain't been no sunshine then. Thank you - there is more hope now than ever. Love and Peace.
How can you not like this, I mean everyone loves the bill withers version, but Freddie King just made it an entirely new song with so much feelng in it,and great guitar work also, whats not to like
i think this version is wonderful, he presents a unique emotional perspective and understanding of the lyrics, its hard to peg down but like theres a bit of frustration, helplessness, love, detachment, and ecstasy in the realisation that it is indeed only dark in her absense.
Freddie Is very soulful. Bill Withers is also very soulful. It's a pleasure hearing music played by musicians - and not just a "keyboard wizard" programming songs without feeling or emotion. The drummer was especially funky.
I'm 66 now and yesterday I showed this recording to a young metal guitarist ..his jaw dropped. What King plays there... embedded by his brilliant troupe is just divine and gives me moist eyes every time. Sack and ashes I was 13 years ago to comment...look here
One of the best concerts I saw back in 1975 was Eric Clapton with the late Freddie King in Shreveport with my cheerleader girlfriend. One of the last shows King did before he died. Freddie King and Clapton did a 30 minute encore that was just amazing.
Theres no denying hes got one of the best blues voiced in the world. To sing the blues, you gotta have a broken down, deep voice, but present it explosively.
Brilliant!! Young guitarists, kick back and study this man and all of the blues players of this time period if you want to be a "SERIOUS" musician! I am an old fart who missed this for soooo many years, and even at my old age, I am in "Freddie school"!! Thanks to men like this, we have great players today!! Yeah Freddie, and thank God for you!!
The ones that play the blues this well, all have the same intensity...they feel every note! Played the song a thousand times, but still feel it like the first time.
Thank you for this song Freddie King. My woman, due to her illness has been "going away" many a times for nearly thirty years now. This song has helped me through this days/ weeks, even when crying 'bout her. Now there seems to be a resolution to her illness - until then I'll keep listening Freddie. Love & Peace
...not everyone gets to be this great and not everyone can appreciate it, so be it, there loss, for those of us who do, we kneel before the King, willingly and for good reason! Sing on Freddie!
Ay what a 'cool cookie' WOW BROTHER you make music because you are gifted by OUR LORD ALMIGHTY GOD ..... its deep and tells of the struggles that people have endured for thousands of years , the pain and suffering ... love thy Brother and neighbour ... ... PRAY this is BIBLICAL
What a great band and The Freddie King coming through your computer screen and intimately into your home !!! The dynamics of this song is so awesome ! It doesn't get any better than this. John Stephanski TEARWAVES' Drummer
I clicked on this cover by curiosity 3 days ago, have been listening to it over and over again since then. God, i think i already like this one more than the original!

Not to mention all the other players who coped his licks !
#monster
Willie dixon stole most of his songs. Freddie is at another level
Freddie is the King!...I never knew he did this song...always knew him for his Blues stuff..this blew my mind!! He does the song justice!! R.I.P. Freddie! and Albert too!!
I'd say this is the blues.......
Two kings gone before my time. I’m a 21 year old southern boy who loves the blues and missin true art
RIP and long live Freddie King (September 3, 1934 - December 28, 1976), aged 42
You will always be remembered as a legend.

The best version and interpretation of this song for me... Real blues, real feelin, real touch ! Perfect with the lyrics !
he is so original that emotions that he plays just flows in the air every time he plays...great musician

I know this comment is 12 years old, but i couldn't agree more. This version especially
Freddie King OWNS this song. He and his band are skilled musicians. THanks for posting.
Blues with feeling, you just couldn't get more feeling than Freddie right there!
What a great singer Freddie was in addition to his great playing.
190 thumbs down? 190 people dont know the origin of greatness.
Anyone who'd give this a thumbs down, doesn't understand great music...
They don't get the Beat (s).!
They're otherwise known as cretins , or to be kinder , the uninformed 190.
Sadly, there's a segment of the population that gets off by putting others down.

One of the best performances I've watched on RUclips and that's saying something.
i think this version is wonderful, he presents a unique emotional perspective and understanding of the lyrics, its hard to peg down but like theres a bit of frustration, helplessness, love, detachment, and ecstasy in the realisation that it is indeed only dark in her absense.
A REAL master of the electric guitar! Soulfull ,majestic ,damn he was GREAT!
Freddie Is very soulful. Bill Withers is also very soulful. It's a pleasure hearing music played by musicians - and not just a "keyboard wizard" programming songs without feeling or emotion. The drummer was especially funky.
Oh gosh, he's amazing! I need to buy all his works.
This man was not from this earth. Absolutely nothing is better than this
Awesome performance, a true artist.
I'm 66 now and yesterday I showed this recording to a young metal guitarist ..his jaw dropped.

in case anyone was wondering, this is what they call the blues...rest in peace big man..
aint no sunshine without Freddie around - but at least he left a great legacy - his music !!!
One of the best concerts I saw back in 1975 was Eric Clapton with the late Freddie King in Shreveport with my cheerleader girlfriend. One of the last shows King did before he died. Freddie King and Clapton did a 30 minute encore that was just amazing.
1stSaintsFan you had a cheerleader girlfriend? lucky you. my girlfriend was the mascot and our team was the lumberjacks.
Did you ever marry the cheerleader?
I think that is what set the tone of the performance, I loved every second of it. Really one on one feel that many of todays concerts really miss.
Over a million hits!!! Blues is alive and well!!!!
I accidentally came across Freddie. I'm glad I did. Very glad.
Three Kings; BB, Albert and Freddie
This is REAL music here,,,out of ALL the music I like,,,I'm so glad I have ears for music like this,,,MINDBLOWING!!!!!!
rudseng, thanks for posting all of these great clips of Freddie! As a fellow Texan, I'm proud to call him one of our own.
Its a natural "living the blues" attitude that does not exist anymore.. so natural... Freddie is "in the song"
RIP
confesso que não conhecia este cantor ,muito bom
So laid back, FREDDIE THE KING and props to the DRUMER
Theres no denying hes got one of the best blues voiced in the world. To sing the blues, you gotta have a broken down, deep voice, but present it explosively.

now thats music from the heart man.. its a pity music isnt like this anymore.
Fender bass précision, gibson ES335, Hammond B3. Thats all bluesmen needs!
and a drummer.
Bernard Ilano this is an ES-345, it is not?
Good eye! Yes, That selector switch would mean 345 (or 347).
Talent probably helps too.
Seems to be piano here, too.
great song, great voice, it's amazing!!!
He was such a good guitarist that I think people sometimes overlook his singing which was as soulful and powerful as anyone elses
The ones that play the blues this well, all have the same intensity...they feel every note! Played the song a thousand times, but still feel it like the first time.
