Ironically those people could lose pounds of fat by just by reducing one out of the 10 hamburgers they ate every day. At those weights, pounds just drop like water
This doctor is pretty criticized for his harsh treatment of his fat patient after the show because these crash diets usually fail and result in the person gaining more weight.
Then again we had a really unhealthy culture around fat people and refused to think that losing fat at big weights was simple discipline when it basically fighting off a medical illness and an addiction.
I'm doing it right now. It feels like hell. I'm not hungry but I am so drained and sad I can't even.

The purpose of the diet is not just a 10% weight loss, but also breaking food addiction. The monotony and the restriction and the flavourless nature it’s kind of like an alcoholic abstaining from alcohol.
True and because of that the "bad" foods will become even more attractive as we tend to want the things we can't have even more. Meaning it's only matter of time before they'll fail and sets them up for terrible dieting/binging cycles with all the added psychological effects such as guilt and shame.
@@terrencestone3938 incorrect. It’s for a specific period of time. For instance, I went to Hippocrates health Institute 10 years ago for their three week life transformation program. It’s raw vegan, two juices per day, two shots of wheatgrass juice per day, a very structured day outside of that. It broke my food addiction, and I came back home and I’m able to moderate a regular diet.I stay away from hyper palatable foods and stick to Whole Foods. Nothing with a label.
It's just not an approach that works for eating because unlike alcohol, we still need food.

It’s called an SOS free diet and it’s specifically deemed towards food addiction. Salt oil and sugar are the addictive components especially a combination. In nature, you would never see a food that has a combination of salt oil and sugar, but processed food, combines all three to make foods particularly addictive

Think for instance potatoes, if I told you, you can have as many potatoes as you want, you would never get fat eating potatoes. But as soon as you add butter and salt. As soon as you fry them into french fries and put salt on them, it becomes an addictive food. Even french fries with no salt is not very addictive. But you combine carbohydrates plus oil plus salt,it’s as addictive as any drug on the market.
I found calorie restriction is much easier if you have way more protein. Once the sugar cravings go, your body is aggressively craving protein. If you change the balance to satiate the protein craving, the hunger pangs are reduced
Yeah, I'm on high protein 1600 Cal diet with intermittent fasting (4 hour eating window) and 24 hour fasts with only one meal every other day of the week where I usually only eat about 1200 Cal, for over a year now and most of the time I'm not hungry even at the end of the 24 hour fasts.

Totally agree. Anytime I want to “cheat” I crave cheap steaks or maybe some flank with some tortillas instead. I never want sugary snacks anymore except some gummies once in awhile.

@@cottoncandace7704 I skip breakfast. For dinner I usually eat vegetable soups, lean pork, beef or chicken, sometimes fish, and a couple fruits.
The reason they need you to do such a restrictive diet is because they need the liver to shrink and get out of the way for surgery.
I was thinking something like preparation for the operation needs to play a role in this, because otherwise the calorie deficite is just waay to high to be healthy

Well not just that but 600 pounds on your heart is so much pressure and they don’t need your heart to go into shock…I’ve seen that happen on the show…very scary
It also will decrease their chance of mortality in the surgery. That said, I don’t understand why they have to lose it so fast. A 1200 cal diet for a 700lb guy is not realistic or healthy or reasonable. I guess it’s a health emergency though.

@@ceagles1001 i dont think hes wrong, the problem with putting it on a tv show like this and not showing better diets after they do the initial extreme diet to lose the 60lbs is the fact that people believe this is the only way to diet. 1200 calories a day doesnt work for everybody and it's not a consistent way to eat for the rest of your life, which makes for very easy relapses to overeating. its not sustainable past the initial 60 pounds they need to lose for the surgery.
I mean it's meant to lose rapid weight in 2 months time. He's always been very open that it should not be a permanent diet

This diet is not about losing weight; it's about the individual showing commitment to a lifestyle change before undergoing surgery. The extremes an individual has to go through in order to reach 600 lbs. requires an extreme level of reprogramming, dedication and discipline. If they can't show commitment before the surgery then they'll just gain the weight back post operation.
MOST people gain the weight back post-surgery, even if they follow the "plan," because your body adapts. Mine did both for that surgery and Lasik. Went right back to where it started.
You can't commit to being hungry and in a calorie deficit for the rest of your life. That's not sustainable. And a lot of people can jump into extremes--for a while. That doesn't prove anything

As someone who had bariatric surgery 6 months ago and is down almost 100 lbs, the 1200 calories is accurate but Im still able to eat protein bars/shakes, carbs, fruit, and occasionally fun foods like healthier ice cream. I was so scared I would never be able to enjoy food again but my program is so similar to a regular healthy diet, just in smaller portions because that’s all the new stomach can hold. It’s all about balance, finding what works for you and more importantly, changing your mindset, your relationship with food and addressing the root cause of BED or food addiction. It was the best decision I ever made for myself and my only regret is I didn’t do it sooner. Funny video and I definitely would have had the same reaction both pre and post op about that too many vegetables salad.

What gets me about this is that for a lot of us (older smaller framed women), 1200 calories is maintenance. I did my basal metabolic rate testing with the respiration machine, and it was 1170. So on a normal day,, with my sedentary office job and commute, if I don’t work out. I’m humming along at 1300calories or 1350 maybe if I’m walking around a bit. If I regularly eat a surplus of even 50 to 100 calories more than that and I’m going through a period of not exercising, I start to gain fat. Fast. So welcome to the regular life of a small post menopausal woman. Always hungry!!!!
that sounds so hard maybe get like a walking pad to increase ur tdee so u could eat more. ive gotten one and its sooo helpful it helps u burn so much calories! I do like an hour per day with breaks between, just brisk walking to get the steps in so I can eat more and maintain
Yes I was going to say this. I am post meno, 5 feet tall. I currently need to loose 20 pounds so I was attempting to eat 1000 calories a day which only has me loosing 1/2 pound a week. It is nearly impossible.
Premenopausal, but extremely short woman here with a similar TDEE. I had the same thought. It isn't easy to stay so low on calories, it really restricts what you can eat. I love potato chips but if I want them I have to measure out a small bowl and skip half a day of eating lol.
Hi Will! My name is Carlos and I am following you from Brazil. I had a bypass surgery, pretty similar to those shown on Dr Now`s TV program.
My path started 18 months ago and I was almost 400 pounds. Nowadays, I am 187 lbs.
You and some other fitness influencers helped me a lot. It is a very difficult journey to bring a new meaning to our relationships with food and exercise but these two aspects are mandatory for success.
Personally, I think we all should be very careful with extreme diets. It is better to do something a lit bit less aggressive and more sustainable than trying to suppress cravings and headaches all day. When I've made diet changes, I have found that adding good healthy choices that make me feel full vs. restricting has been more effective. It is also sustainable for me.

This diet would have me referred back to Eating Disorder services.
I actually used to do less at one point, and apart from all the physical symptoms of starvation and nutrient deficiencies, I felt alright. I wasn't hungry, at one point I did have enough energy to be fairly active.
That didn't last though. I kept cutting calories and I didn't have the energy to go from my bed to my desk, I was in pain a lot and I was so spaced out, it wasn't safe to go out by myself.
This kind of diet also led me down the ED rabbit hole. I am recovered now after a lot of therapy and work with my dietician. It’s crazy how this diet (for someone not 600lbs) can cause so many health issues. Idk if my heart will recover. It’s been 4 years and I still have no hunger cues
I just found your channel like a week ago and I love how genuine and realistic you are about weight loss, etc. I just received pretty bad results from my doctor about my health and I'm starting my weight loss journey today. I just can't believe I let myself get like this. I'm at 250 pounds and my goal is 160. Your videos are helping me a lot! Here we go.

You're missing the biggest point of the diet. Will the patient have the instant willpower to switch gears to a super low restrictive diet and not fail. Also, when you're super morbidly obese, you're very life hangs in the balance. An incredibly restrictive diet to reverse the damage as quickly as possible is necessary for the patients very survival. This diet isn't for normal people trying to lose their love handles. It's for someone who has a million calories in reserves that they need to quickly dump.

As a person who has had gastric bypass, a 1200 calorie diet is much easier after the surgery than before, but it is possible. 310 to 170 and I have kept it off for 22 years.

Their body's have so much more fat to take energy from then a normal humans body. That's why 1200 works.
@@tomat8it’s a stupid idea because it’s setting them up to fail, going from 5000 to 2000 is still cutting calories more than half which would be adequate for their goals, and easier to stick to than 1200
@@RandomPerson-eh7mn The issue is that these people are so incredibly fat, they're literally on the verge of dying. Several patients on the show did die during filming. They're deathly ill. The first few pounds is easy to get off, but once they lose 50 pounds it stagnates more and more, that when they keep eating 2000kcal, they're simply not losing enough weight to save their lives when their weight loss stagnates.

My friend went though a gastric sleeve and according to his doc, the diet beforehand is meant to shrink their liver down so they can be easily operated on so weight loss isn't the only goal

10:03 yes, it’s too restrictive for most people, but Dr. Now is trying to get the weight off of his patients as quickly as possible. He’s trying to get them to a safer weight to do the weight loss surgery. It’s literally lifesaving.
in theory yeah but seeing as this is way too restrictive on calories and its a huge life style change going from 5000cal a day to 1200 its no wonder most of the patients on the show fail on this diet. and most of the time they're chemically addicted to fast food too, I feel the better option is to restrict their diet to 2000 then slowly lower it week by week and still let them eat fast food but keep it within the calorie target and replace the snacks with fruits. yeah it might take a little longer to lose the weight but atleast they can stick to it
@@majorchaos5000I think it is more about judging determination and serving as a filter to show who is capable of following the strict diet that the operation requires and who isn't. These operations are not cheap, and the number that can be performed per year is limited.
@@majorchaos5000 You're aware these people are a single infection away from dying all the time? Taking a few weeks longer can literally kill them. They're that heavy. I think that's the part people seem to be forgetting when looking at this diet.

I think it's better if they're still gonna eat fast food may as do it in a deficit, then when they see they're losing weight I can guarantee they wanna stick to it and make the switch to a much cleaner healthier diet. It's more mentally challenging than you realise especially when their dopamine has been hijacked from all the chemicals from fast food. Its like asking a heroine user to go cold turkey, it never usually never ends well
@@majorchaos5000 Not in theory; in practice. Many of these people are 700+ lbs and severely immobile. They have heart issues, lung issues, are constantly stewing in their own bacteria, etc. They literally do not have time to lose 1-2 lbs a week. They are basically at death's door. On top of that, a bypass isn't a cureall; even a remarkably tiny stomach can be stretched right back out. So this diet is not only to put away the guillotines hanging over their necks, but also to force them to show the level of committment required to sustain the lifestyle required to attain a healthier weight. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
Also of note- the show did change later to also include therapy as a required element to the plan which is great because you can't get to 600lbs with a normal mental state.
My grandmother was always "hangry". She followed the Scarsdale diet like a religion and never weighed more than 85lbs. She was hard to be around
My aunt died from complications due to the surgery you discussed in this video. It’s very sad. I lost 75 pounds in 6 months and am happy I never came close to considering that surgery.
It strikes me that if someone can stick to such a restrictive diet, why not just continue it and skip the surgery? Sounds like that's maybe what you did.

Bro 1000 sisters is very entertaining and motivating as well. Honestly Tammy has been killing it lately, down several hundred pounds and still losing fat down after surgery. more importantly she is getting more positive and doing more things outside of her comfort zone, and even trying to support and push her sister. I went from 367 to 139 in around 2 years, I had the power of depression to help me, it was Christmas time and I was at my lowest point. I just couldn't eat anything I wasn't hungry so I did a news years resolution to walk at night just a little at first. I was on Omad or the first year and a bit. Year 1 average miles a day was 3.2 year 2 new years resolution was to walk 10 miles a day ended the year with a 10.4 average. Then I joined a gym and combined that with a average 12.4 miles a day last year. This year I've cut backdown to 8.9 miles average atm. decided to go on a bulk, I'm looking forward to the end so I can lose weight again once I get to 160
omad diet really does work. i just eat all my 1.5k calories in that one meal and it does keep you satiated for the whole day

@@professionalfangirl168 Exactly. It is much easier to have one 1200 protein and fat rich meal a day rather than be grazing on nothing several times a day. One of the advantage of it is that you don't get hungry.

I was over 400lbs and I put myself on this 1200 calorie a day diet. no flour, or refined sugars and the weight dramatically dropped off over the time of 4 months, it was extremely rough at the beginning but became accustomed after. You just have to have alot of self discipline and mental courage to succeed.

Bariatric surgery is the absolute worst. Sure, it does help some people... but it doesn't solve the underlying problem which is a bad lifestyle. I had a previous coworker go through with it even after I had a heavy talk with him and he said he knew the risks and had no self control and needed something.
Well, he still has no self control and has since gained weight even with a reduced stomach size. He essentially just eats more often, but it's still high calorie, low nutrients food choices and he's still consuming the same amount of calories, it's just in like 10 tiny meals and 10 snacks throughout the day instead of 4 large meals and a couple large snacks. He still sits all day long without moving other than to get food or go to the restroom...
So, now he spent all of this money and altered his body for nothing...
It's "the worst" yet there are studies proving it makes life expectancy higher for those who get it compared to those who never get the surgery and continue obese 🤔
I dislike how people are not being tested for insulin resistance or leptin resistance. This is one of underlying cause of wanting to eat, eat and eat and not feeling satiated. Lifestyle choices help a lot. If you eat a lot, workout a lot too...
Had the same problem...didn't gain any weight back but lost very little...i was always hungry...turns out I had insulin resistance. So they we addressed THAT and problem was solved. It's not always the person.

Hey Will, I lost 50lbs from 350lbs a few years back. My diet was super aggressive around 1300-1500 calories/day. I hit a plateau for years. I ate no breakfast, then chicken and green beans for lunch and dinner and that's it. (Workout 4 days a week)
The weight loss stopped around 299 and I could not for the life of me keep losing weight. I stayed 299 when I ate 1200 cal/day, 2000 cal/day, 2500 cal/day.
To break the plateau I reset to what the internet said was my maintenance at 3000 cal/day. My weight still did not move after 30 days.
I then started a 400 cal/day deficit. I'm seeing results again and I'm so pumped. Currently 291, hoping to see 280s for the first time in YEARS.
If anyone is doing super aggressive caloric restriction and have stopped losing weight for an extended amount of time, please consider resetting.
And please consider doing it properly. With daily exercise and realistic calorie deficits. That come from a high protein balanced diet.
Start an adderall or Ritalin prescription along with gets yourself addicted to zyns. You will have no problem eating 800 calories a day

Only need to train once per day, 3-5 days a week for results. Allow around 3 days for your muscles to fully heal before training that muscle group again. For diet, slowly lower your calories not big jumps like that. You should only be losing around a 1lb a week maybe 2lbs.

I've been doing 1200/day for a couple months now. Really in the groove of it, of course I miss some foods but I've got it figured out so I'm rarely hungry. The key for me is nonfat greek yogurt, I eat about 5-6 pounds of the stuff per week (two big tubs from costco) usually with ~200g of fresh strawberries and frozen blueberries added per serving. 370g of yogurt and fruit will fill you up easily for under 200 cal, especially paired with 150-170g of chicken fish or shrimp and some veggies or salad. Shout out to Halo Top as well, that stuff is a great treat at the end of the day. Joseph's pitas are great too (60cal per pita). Gatsby chocolate (will make you code brown).
I used to eat Greek yogurt for lunch or dinner. I gag if I eat Greek yogurt now. Can’t eat that for the life of me.

greek yogurt with protein powder (i use ghost chips ahoy and various other flavors) is the BEST dessert/snack/breakfast/ whatever u want! it’s keeps you so full and fulfills sweet tooth. i have a very sensitive stomach to desserts and just overall eat pretty healthy and it’s a staple for me
I do my super excessive binge eating on 0.1% fat no sugar yoghurt with berries. Stevia and sucralose makes this a so tasteful meal.
This meal probably the number one reason i never got fat.

My calorie deficit was at 1350 calories for 9 months, now it’s a little higher, at 1550 due to increased activity, but having only two meals a day is what REALLY helped to stick to my deficit. I have a huge, protein and carbs loaded breakfast at 600-700 calorie range and it really keeps me full until dinner. When I have a snack or smaller meals, lasting on this deficit is so so much harder and I almost always tend to go overboard.

Speaking from experience as a bariatric patient I can honestly say that it is more of a mental challenge than it is physical. I weighed over 450 pounds at my heaviest, 436 pounds day of surgery and I now weigh 293 and I am 7 months post op and still losing. I eat about 1000 calories a day, no sugar, and minimal carbs (usually veggies and fiber) YOU HAVE TO BE MENTALLY READY IN ORDER TO SUCCEED!! The surgery does restrict at first but you can re-stretch your stomach over time . YOU HAVE TO WANT IT!! Your why has to be more important than the food. It's that simple

Lost 155lbs now doing this in about a year. Eat all 1,000-1,400 in one meal at the end of the day. I eat a few different varieties but it all consists of 1/2 lean beef. I have had a dozen or so cheat days but when you get use to eating 1,200 calories a big cheat day feels like 3,000 calories, not far from maintenance. It’s been generally good, definitely have times of low energy, definitely have had mornings where I wake up stiff and physically drained. Also had an issue with my gull blatter, doctor claims it’s from before the diet but I went years obese without issues. The motivation is high when you’re losing 4lbs every week. Diet is mostly recipes with beans, potatoes or rice, lean beef. Increased exercise from none to daily gym workouts 95% cardio gradually
