It's amazing what RUclips has done to the next generation of bass anglers. Im 35 and I'm sure you can relate, we didn't have anything like this when we were young and learning. I had to learn by time on the water, and pick up any tips from watching others or if I was lucky someone showed me a trick or two. Keep up the good work. Guys like you, LFG, tacticalbassin guys have solid knowledge that takes years to acquire Hope the viewers can really appreciate what your doing
I've just got back into fishing this summer, and you have been a huge help. I've learned a ton and this video has been exactly the type of instruction I've recently been looking for. Thanks a ton Gene.
This is a very helpful new series for me. Thanks Gene. It seems so common sense the way you put it, yet when I just checked the 2 spinning rods I use they don't have enough flex and I haven't been paying enough attention to hook thickness which explains the two fish that broke off this past weekend.
Growing up in the 80' I learned from TV Bill Dance what to buy and get for bass fishing. Like the video to be straight forward. Like this nice job that's. I've been teaching the little kids at the pawns I fish and giving them a lure and hook it up for them and that will makes there day the little kiddos learning about the world of fishing. They will remember that day for ever. I just got the new 13 fishing kalonC size 40 reel and omen medium power fast Action rod and kalonA size 30 reel medium light power fast Action rod my do everything drop shot or ned rig and tubes baits. Only have got to use them for rainbow trout and brown trout fishing and some in town lake has stocker's thy start in October to March for stocked trout fishing.
Great video Gene! As someone else mentioned below, I wish we had this kind of instruction when I was a kid. I'm now an old fart with just a lot of bad habits (on fishing). :-) Seriously, your videos are doing a great deal of service to educate and improve everyone's experience on the water. I have already learned a great deal on how to properly fish for bass, and how to decipher the "secrets" that go with bass fishing, gear, and methods. I thought I knew how to fish for bass, as my Dad taught me, but I know now that there is a LOT I don't know! :-) I've spent most of my adult life fly fishing here in Nothern California, and have many great experiences in the many great trout rivers we have here. I'm now retired and looking for a new challange, bass fishing local waters. I want to get my skill level "up to snuff" on bass water.. Besides, wading through rivers is hard work even for a young man, which I am not anymore! lol
Good video, I'm a newish subscriber and doing some catching up on your older vids. I appreciate the straight forward approach to the subject, this can be a very expensive hobby.
Gene, u probably won't see this, but I would love to see you do a video on how you locate baitfish/crawfish etc. and how you "match the hatch". Would love to see something in regards to crawfish specifically as it relates to jig colors/trailer.
I was using a 6'10" ML Omen Black 2 all weekend on the Brazos after the Whitney dam. Paired it with a 500 series reel, and 6lb fluoro (I wanted 8lb - 10lb braid, but couldn't find any before my trip). It was a dream to fish. Threw a 4" Keitech Shad Impact on a 2/0 or 3/0 offset worm hook the whole time (not in a package, so I just picked the smallest one I had). Got me everything from smallies, spots, and largies, to yellow and white bass too. Getting the proper presentation, with the appropriate gear just makes everything so much more fun. I mean, aside from the total pain that straight fluoro causes (only had two wind knots, so I got lucky).
Hey brother I've been subscribed for about 3 or 4 years now, I honestly thought I knew a lot for someone being about 18yrs old at the time I subscribed to your channel, but over the past few years I've learned so much from you and I really appreciate it. If you are ever in East Texas on Toledo Bend or Sam Rayburn let me know especially if you are on Rayburn cause I'm not even 5 minutes from it lol
Hey gene, I know you cover this info in all your videos but I thought it would be useful to new anglers to make a video about hooksets such as when to wait, how long to wait, when to hammer it right away or when to just put some pressure and start reeling. I feel like that's a pretty overlooked aspect of fishing help videos. Love yer vids man, keep it up!
I love your vids! I learn so much from them. Can you do a video with bait casters? I'm still learning what's the best set up for each lure. Also, I'm trying to figure out what 3 rods set ups should I always carrier. Tight lines buddy
AWESOME! This is perfect! I've been looking to find videos like this for a long time. Please keep this series going, and keep being amazing! I've been a sub for years and can't wait for more content in the future! Thanks Gene!
100% agree with the braid on spinning reels. Although I do keep a couple spooled up with all fluro for some of our super clear high mountain and alpine lakes.
Great video! Thank you Gene. Btw, I just bought a medium medium fast bait caster rod that is a pure blast to fish a shaky head, and tiny crank baits. Only used it one day so far, but great fun!
Absolutely loving the break down. What is an occasion you might pull out an ultra light? I do a lot of kayak fishing. I have found it nice when doing small river trips. Would there be any other times you could think use it?
Hey fluke I have a good idea so if you you see this please read the whole thing. You teach us a lot of things. Why who you do a quiz video. As a question based on bass fishing like foe example. In the early fall what is a good bait what rod reel and line do you use and how do you retrieve it. The give is a chance to pause the video so we could think about it. Then answer it and do a whole series on it. If you like the idea please use it. Guys if you read this give it a like so fluke could see it
Bart, Auto correct killed you on this one but I think I get what you are saying and I like the idea. Let me put some though into it and see if I can put my little twist to it before I put it into action. Thanks man.
Thank you so much for doing this video, I found it to be extremely helpful. I have one question. I have a medium fast 7 ft rod, rigged with 8 pound test. Would I be OK to throw a 5 inch Senko with a 1/2 ounce weight on this?
What about a medium heavy spinning rod and 20lb test braid for fishing finesse jigs with a hook that would be bent out by my medium heavy baitcasting rod? I have some 3/16 ounce finesse jigs but I bent the hook when using my baitcaster. Do you think a medium heavy spinning rod with a size 3000 spinning reel spooled with 20lb braid to a 10 pound fluorocarbon leader would work? Because I already tried using the jig on my medium spinning rod, but I feel like it loads up the rod too much on the cast, and I can't get quite good enough of a hookset, so I would need a slightly stiffer rod. Also I think it would probably work well with heavier shakey heads and very light texas rigs. I am a shore fisherman, and I feel like it would be easier to pitch a small jig around branches with a short but powerful spinning rod rather than a 7' casting rod.
I've been using just a Medium with 6 pound line. I'm having trouble hooking up on some of the fish. i don't know if it's my hook sets, or my set up. I'm fairly new to the finesse style fishing, I'm used to fishing jigs and Texas rigs, so maybe I'm setting the hook to hard. I've been using Owner shakey heads and just straight tail worms.
I have a spinning rod that throw 7/21 gr of lures, it has a good backbone, and another spinning rod that throw 5/15 gr of lures that is more flexeble than the other one, what type of rigs i can and i should use with these rods?
So using a medium light or a medium power for those finesse style lures, but what about the action? How much does that effect things or should I not worry about that? I’ve only ever used fast action rods and haven’t really left that trend because it’s what I’m used to, but would a moderate or different action be better? Thank you for all these videos!
How much does the reel really matter on the medium light setup? I have a shimano 4000 spinning reel with 15 lb. braid on a 7 foot med light / fast action spinning rod. Do I need to guy buy a smaller 2000 - 3000 reel? Or can I get away with setting the drag lightly?
I should say I enjoy doing soft plastics the most. I have 3 spinning rods currently, one cheapo walmart special ultralight. One medium ugly stick 5ft. One 6ft6 medium spinning $60 phluegar combo. None of my current rods really do anything great. Where would you suggest I start? Softs are fun and so are cranks/rattles. Hope this helps...Red
Hey Gene would like your input on the creed gt in both sizes. As in how good they are u said you have been beating up on them, the reel I want is the new shimano nacsi but I seen this reel and was like hmm mm well and crap which one do I get lol. I have had my hands on the shimano. before so I know what is all about, but not the creed. Are they up to par or just blow your mind away. thanks
Can I use a big reel for shore lure fishing? (5000,6000,7000) 'cause my rod weight is 10-20lb and the reel's Drag is 8kg(around 15 lb) Do I have to match rod weight with the reel drag?
Gene, I accidentally bought a M/L casting rod when I started out. Should I continue to use it as a campfire poker or step up my reel game to pair it with? Which reel would you suggest if so?
Only thing I hate about braid on a spinning reel is the grinding vibration the braid makes when it comes through the eyelets? Probably bc I use cheapish rods, I don't know
First off, awesome video. Secondly,I'm currently having trouble keeping big fish buttoned up on jerkbaits. I'm using 6ft medium action rod with 12lb floro. I've done the obvious by changing hooks but not upgrading them, meaning I'm using the same size that came with said jerkbait. Should I go to a bigger treble size? Also do you recommend the braid to floro on a jerkbait as well? Thanks in advance
hey flukemaster just wondering if you knew anything about number 8 tackle company in their blackout rods I put a rod spend a couple months and that it just broke off I was wondering if maybe they are good with refunds and/or getting me a different one just wondering let me know thank you awesome video by the way
Hey Fluke, you mentioned hardbaits 1/4oz and below for Spinning Gear which makes sense but my question is if I'm using a 1/4oz moving bait would you use a 5 speed or 6 speed reel? Reason why I ask is because 6 speed spinning reels are not as common compared to casting reels, I'm sure you knew this but it wasn't mentioned, cheers!
How do you remember what lb. test you put on a particular reel? I understand the fundamental differences between the different types of lines (braid and mono, etc.), but I notoriously forget what lb. test is on what reel in my arsenal.
What I used to do is get a little round dot sticker and wright the pound test I put on and then stick it somewhere under the reel where I wouldn't knock it off and it wouldn't get in the way.
That's genius, thanks for the suggestion. By the way, do you use any mono backing or electrical tape on your braid reels? I've tried it in the past and the wind knots and line twists completely dissuaded me from braided line.
Awesome, thanks for your time. I'll search through and see if I can find those videos. I appreciate your channel and devotion to teaching the world. My first bass was due in part to your videos. Tight lines and good luck.
Do you ever watch your own videos. If not I recommend you to. The back ground on many of them you can see what your demonstrating. Your knowledge is really good and I watch many of your videos. I have learned a great amount. Think about your background and maybe use a piece of color paper so we can see what is going on. Thanks
HOLY SHIT, LOVEE THAT WALL!! LOL RAGE TAIL Products are some of my favorite baits for jig trailers/texas rigging, I just bought myself my 1st couple packs of BIOSPAWN'S VileCraw & a couple packs of the ExoSticks....EXCITED TO TRY THEM BECAUSE OF YOU!
Why heavier LB test braid than what you have for your leader? If your leader is always lighter, won't it always break first? If that is the case, why not use smaller LB braid? Thanks for your vids !
Like Nigel said, it has more to do with diameter for me. Anything less than 15 feels like pixie hair and is hard to manage, especially when it's windy.
I wish I saw this video before buying smh I’m gonna go ahead and ask anyways I have the gx2 6’6 medium mod fast and I paired it with a stratus VI svi 45 is that a too big of a reel
I use a 3000 size reel for my Medium and medium light rod even if I'm using light braid. I'll fill it up half way with mono then put my braid. I prefer a 3000 even with light line because of the bigger spool you can reel the line in much faster and you won't feel restricted when wanting to put on heavier line.
What size is that creed GT in the video? I just purchased a 7' med Abu Garcia veracity rod and am planning on pre ordering the reel for that rod. Was thinking 3000 but that looks smaller.
It's amazing what RUclips has done to the next generation of bass anglers. Im 35 and I'm sure you can relate, we didn't have anything like this when we were young and learning. That's really sad to see people don't have a better use of time then to dislike your videos, quality video as always thanks for this!

I've just got back into fishing this summer, and you have been a huge help. I've learned a ton and this video has been exactly the type of instruction I've recently been looking for. Thanks a ton Gene.
Thanks for explaining the terms and not just saying them, I'm new to this and get confused by most the other youtubers
Can't emphasize enough how helpful your videos are. Builder lots of confidence in us novice anglers!

Gene, u probably won't see this, but I would love to see you do a video on how you locate baitfish/crawfish etc. and how you "match the hatch". Would love to see something in regards to crawfish specifically as it relates to jig colors/trailer.
Very good vid! I bought my first worm and jig spinning rod two weeks ago, this video really hit the nail on the head. Thank you!
Great video keep up the good work. I have been fishing as long as I can remember, but I still learn something new almost every video.
Great detail and information! Can't wait for the baitcaster series of these
GREAT. Thanks that is why I follow you. No one else what laying that out clearly.
Thank you so much for this video. I was actually about to buy a new rod and was wondering what I need to complete my arsenal. You da man
I was using a 6'10" ML Omen Black 2 all weekend on the Brazos after the Whitney dam. That's what I'm planing on doing in the next few videos like this.
Absolutely enjoyed this video. I enjoy these types of videos, being fairly new to bass fishing. So much knowledge here. Thanks.
appreciate this vid. tmw is my bday and im heading out on the yak
AWESOME! This is perfect! I've been looking to find videos like this for a long time. Please keep this series going, and keep being amazing! I've been a sub for years and can't wait for more content in the future! Thanks Gene!

Oh hey thank you for reading it sorry for the autocorrect I didn't even notice till now but the whole idea is to test us on what we learned
Great video! Please come out with more on this topic
Do you need to add floro leader or can you just fish brade strate up
excellent video series. thanks for all the great info
most informative channel for bass fishing !!!!!!
Thank you so much for doing this video, I found it to be extremely helpful. I have one question. I have a medium fast 7 ft rod, rigged with 8 pound test. Would I be OK to throw a 5 inch Senko with a 1/2 ounce weight on this?
Love your videos Gene!
Thanks Danny
Thanks glad to see my instincts where right good to see someone putting out this information!
Thks for your teachings.I am new fisher who liked your combo:1.heavy power rod and reel combo.I mean address to buy it.
Thks a lot
What about a medium heavy spinning rod and 20lb test braid for fishing finesse jigs with a hook that would be bent out by my medium heavy baitcasting rod? I have some 3/16 ounce finesse jigs but I bent the hook when using my baitcaster. Do you think a medium heavy spinning rod with a size 3000 spinning reel spooled with 20lb braid to a 10 pound fluorocarbon leader would work? Like your wall in the background! I have the same thing but smaller in my closet.
Informative. Just getting in to finesse fishing so this was quite helpful.
Would you say that the thicker the hook, the heavier the action the rod should be?
that was fantastic Gene. thank you. it taught me a whole lot.
gene ur the best, man, watch ur videos everyday, I've learned a lot from u
Great content! Looking forward to you covering more presentations!
Hi new to angling.. bought a daiwa 6/6" mfs rod n reel..what lures can I use with it and the best fishes I can catch with it?
I got a m fast action hellbent spinning rod. Would it still be good for all finesse fishing. Like wacky, dropshot and shaky heads mainly
Thanks for the information! I really enjoyed this video. Looking forward to the next one.

subscriber from Dalton,Ga am planning on buying my first rod and reel this week was wounding what you recommend for around $200
How much does the reel really matter on the medium light setup? I have a shimano 4000 spinning reel with 15 lb. braid on a 7 foot med light / fast action spinning rod. Do I need to guy buy a smaller 2000 - 3000 reel? Or can I get away with setting the drag lightly?
what company do you like for a good medium fast action rod.
Is there a argument towards or for having a medium heavy spinning rod in the Arsenal? Or is it just a waste of $?
Why not use a robo worm rebarb hook instead of an ewg style hook for your heavy cover drop shot?
great videos as always... I was wondering what would I fish a bull shad with ? rod -reel - LINE
it's a 5" bull shad
If it's just a 5" then I'd go with a 7'3" or 7'6"Med Hvy with 20lb fluoro on a 6.6:1 Reel.
Do you have a video on the first three rods/reels a newbie should get? I bank fish mostly, but have a few friends that have boats.
Hey fluke master do u think it would snap if I tried to set the hook using tubes and little 1/8 oz spinnerbaits?
Hey Fluke, are those new One3 Creed reels have braid ready spools?
what knot do you use to join the braid to flourcarbon?
Gene. Will you be doing a video on a heavy action rod?
Awesome video!! Can't wait for more on the same topic.
(5000,6000,7000) 'cause my rod weight is 10-20lb and the reel's Drag is 8kg(around 15 lb)
Do I have to match rod weight with the reel drag?
Got an Inception 6.6:1 today matched on Omen Black 2 7’1 medium fast
Gene, I accidentally bought a M/L casting rod when I started out. Should I continue to use it as a campfire poker or step up my reel game to pair it with? Which reel would you suggest if so?
Only thing I hate about braid on a spinning reel is the grinding vibration the braid makes when it comes through the eyelets? Probably bc I use cheapish rods, I don't know
Love the 13 fishing gear wish shops in Australia stock all the range
Thank you ,do you know the best all around spinning reel size and rod strength ?
Penn persuit 3 combo 7 foot medium 4000 size reel
First off, awesome video. Secondly,I'm currently having trouble keeping big fish buttoned up on jerkbaits. I'm using 6ft medium action rod with 12lb floro. I've done the obvious by changing hooks but not upgrading them, meaning I'm using the same size that came with said jerkbait. Should I go to a bigger treble size? Also do you recommend the braid to floro on a jerkbait as well? Thanks in advance
Can you throw lures with a spincaster
thanks!! love how quickly you replied. keep fishing
Great video! Would be awesome if u made a similar video for baitcasters!
when you spool up a spinning rod with braid do you use a backing??
+Noah Harper I don't on the smaller ones. I just put a piece of electrical tape around the spool first
hey flukemaster just wondering if you knew anything about number 8 tackle company in their blackout rods I put a rod spend a couple months and that it just broke off I was wondering if maybe they are good with refunds and/or getting me a different one just wondering let me know thank you awesome video by the way
Give them a shout on the 13 Fishing website to see what they can do.
Hey fluke just wondering if you've looked into the ultraskiff? Looks pretty neat.
With all the great kayaks out there the ultraskiff really doesn't excite me.
Great informative video as always. Thanks fluke!
I have a question what would you suggest for using deep diving crank baits rod and reel combo
That's coming up but a long Medium Heavy Moderate is what I use. They might also call it a Cranking rod.
Alright thanks man btw love your videos keep up the great work
What's the name of the medium light action rod you had at the beginning?
Never mind I see the description
can u do one on if u can only have two maybe three good setups
A Medium Light Spinning Rod, a Med Fast Spinning or Baitcaster, and a Med Hvy Fast Baitcater.
Jon Ramsey if it’s 1/4 oz you can send it on a bait caster
How do you remember what lb. test you put on a particular reel? I understand the fundamental differences between the different types of lines (braid and mono, etc.), but I notoriously forget what lb. test is on what reel in my arsenal.

That's genius, thanks for the suggestion. By the way, do you use any mono backing or electrical tape on your braid reels? I've tried it in the past and the wind knots and line twists completely dissuaded me from braided line.
I always use electrical tape on my spinning rods. On my baitcasters I use mono backing. I've got a few videos on it. Somewhere in my list.
Awesome, thanks for your time. I'll search through and see if I can find those videos. I appreciate your channel and devotion to teaching the world. My first bass was due in part to your videos. Tight lines and good luck.
Thanks Gene great video
Was the creed in the video a 1500 or 2000 size
2000
So for a medium light rod, would you recommend 6-8lb fluorocarbon? Great video, thanks!
"2,4,6,or 8"
2,4,6,8 who do we appreciate!
LOL RAGE TAIL Products are some of my favorite baits for jig trailers/texas rigging, I just bought myself my 1st couple packs of BIOSPAWN'S VileCraw & a couple packs of the ExoSticks....EXCITED TO TRY THEM BECAUSE OF YOU!
do you use wacky rig?
Have you ever fished on lake russel or hartwell
Your in Georgia right
loved this vid! keep up the great work.
Why heavier LB test braid than what you have for your leader? If your leader is always lighter, won't it always break first? If that is the case, why not use smaller LB braid? Thanks for your vids !
Line diameter. 20 lb braid is the same size as like 6 lb test
Like Nigel said, it has more to do with diameter for me. Anything less than 15 feels like pixie hair and is hard to manage, especially when it's windy.
thanks to you both. makes total sense.
I wish I saw this video before buying smh I’m gonna go ahead and ask anyways I have the gx2 6’6 medium mod fast and I paired it with a stratus VI svi 45 is that a too big of a reel
Btw what glasses are you wearing on the fishing shirt trip winner video, green lenses? Thanks
Those are Costa Cat Kay glasses if they are green lenses.
I use a 3000 size reel for my Medium and medium light rod even if I'm using light braid. I'll fill it up half way with mono then put my braid. I prefer a 3000 even with light line because of the bigger spool you can reel the line in much faster and you won't feel restricted when wanting to put on heavier line.
i have also noticed less line problems with a 3000 size reel
can i use a light action rod for drop shoting?
Joe Mendenhall yeah
Really really finesse though. I’d go med light because you’ll have the tip and backbone you need. You won’t get enough backbone with a light rod
What size is that creed GT in the video? I just purchased a 7' med Abu Garcia veracity rod and am planning on pre ordering the reel for that rod. Was thinking 3000 but that looks smaller.
Plan on using for weightless plastics, weightless jigs, drop shot & small cranks (bank angler). I can't cast these for snot on baitcaster.
It's a 2000. I have a 3000 and it's great, I've just never been a fan of a 3000 size.
Great video. Good explanations. Thanks.
