Gene, this is one of the very best videos I have ever watched. I learned sssooo much more descriptive, detailed, technique-specific information than I ever have in my 4 years of bass fishing. Based on this video, I'm sitting here tweeking how I have my rods/reels paired together. Thank you so much for what you've done for me to now go drop a line in the water with even greater confidence than I've had. You've really helped me! I've subscribed to your channel and set the notification alarm (which I never do!) because I don't want to miss any of your videos. I'm definitely a huge fan of yours! And, you seem like a really great, genuine, humble, down-to-earth guy...if I ever run into you it would be my privilege to buy you your favorite beverage and chat for a bit!
Thanks Gene!!!!! This was a really good video brother. I know when I first started bass fishing this was the information I was looking for and had to find out through years of experience!!!! Its cool and kind of humbling to see young anglers already knowing the stuff that took years to find out on our own!!!
Well a few weeks back I had the misfortune of catching some bullet shrapnel to the foot. After about 4 hours in the ER and being bandaged up, who come through the door to take my last x-Rays but the man himself. So cool meeting you man. I know I was pretty quite but in that little bit of time, it was easy to tell you're as down to earth as you seem in your videos.
@koviack no he's under cover. His real name is Henry Ross. Even though some old chick thinks his name is Harry... Harry pair of testicles. He pounded an asian chick like a mallard duck then fell for a chick with short term memory loss.
This video was super helpful! I've been watching all kinds of videos and everyone talks about the rods, reels, line, etc. to the point where my head is spinning. Your video gave dear reasons and directions that will really help me as I get going. I appreciate the way you present things and your motivation behind it. I know the video is a couple of years old - but the fish probably haven't learned too much in that time so I'm set. Thanks.
Gene your growing on me man!! just watched your rod action and power explained video and then this one and I'm writing this stuff down. THANK YOU for your videos they make bass fishing even more fun.
The Mustad Grip Pin hook is by far the best hook I've ever used for pitching! You're one of the first I've seen using it. I work for the company that manufactures those for Mustad. Got some new stuff along those lines coming out soon. Can't wait!
It was a pleasure meeting you at Grady's. I was the guy that asked about converting his salt water wife to bass fishing. thank you for all that you do.
I've come back to this video several times since you posted it. It would be awesome to have all this info in a chart or diagram. Knowing what rod you are using for certain bait types is easily overlooked with a casual fisherman. Thanks for the incite, and please consider creating a chart for us visual learners ;-)
FYI - Thanks for the heads up on the 13 Fishing Inception reel. Great reel for the price. I seem to do better with the Concept A when it comes to throwing light 1/4oz stuff. But for everything else the Inception is fantastic. Thanks again!
Dude we need a review of the Blackout Rod. I almost bought it but went with the Omen. Great vid BTW and I'm sure it'll help many people (as it helped me.) Thanks Gene
I just bought 4 whopper ploppers. Cost me about $72. I need to buy an assortment of crankbaits, swimbaits, and jerkbaits. I bought a lews Mach 2 spinning reel on clearance for $100. Now I need to buy a bait caster and learn. I didn’t think fishing will be so expensive. Started off with the ugly stick pack at Walmart for 25. I now need to buy 3 more rods “baitcasters”. Ohh yeah I need a boat too. And a motor for the boat. Need cloths for fishing. Anything else I need? Forgot to say I flung half my ugly stick into the lake. I’m 3 weeks in since I’ve started fishing. Today is 8/6/19
Agree with you about the 65lbs line. I get the same comment. Usually comes from people who think you can't throw anything in a foot deep, tight salad because they think there's nothing hiding there. I prove them wrong, great success.
Hey Gene, one rod brand I would recommend is St.Croix they make these rods in the USA and the sensitivity is amazing. If there isn't a length rod you are looking for, you can make custom length, handles, and rod blanks. I would give them a try
BassBoys TV yeah they are nice, but I don't feel like taking out a second mortgage to buy one. For the price of one of their rods and I can get 5 or 6 really nice ones that are also USA made.
yeah if you 8 or 80 years old but not for these guys I am sorry but ol ZEBCO JUST COULDN'T HANDLE THE ABUSE OF THIS TYPE OF BASS FISHING. + I DO NOT NO OF ANY ZEBCO RODS THAT ARE 7+FEET LONG WITH 7 DIFFERENT ACTIONS. NOW FOR BLUE GILL OR JUST HAVING FUN NOT SERIOUS FISHING YEP THEN THE ZEBCO WOULD COME INTO PLAY BUT NOT FOR FLIPPING A HALF OZ BAIT
This is an old video but I really wanted to point out how much help it was. Fishing from a kayak (not one of those mini bass boats you see people with now days) means I'm very limited. 2 rods and a 3700 is a light trip, 5 rods and 6-7 various boxes is when I mean business. Anymore than that and it's just too much on the kayak for me. Heck, at max load I have to walk/crawl around the yak just to get to everything.
Gene, we've heard you reluctantly mention that swimbait a couple of times now. Haha. That seems like a good story to hear in a future video. We have all been there, man. Not fun losing a $10 lure let alone one like that.
good documentary sir, I've actually narrowed down to 2 rods... a pitching Flippin rod Abu set up with 8.1 ratio and more all around rod incase I'm walking around a bunch of ponds 6'6" medium heavy citica with a 6.4 .. both 15 lb mono.... never failed me yet
thanks for all your lessons flukemaster I always do what you teach in your videos I like this set up you have I'm going to getting probably different brands or cheaper but I will thanks
Just got my no. 8 tackle rod the other day and I love it, what colors are best to throw for top water. Mid day, early morning, late evening, cloudy, sunny
Great video, as all i've watched so far have been, Thanks! Question: Can you do another one, or link a list of your rods, reel, line, combos and what you fish with them if we were to go past 6 rood/reels?
Gene, great video. You didn't mention line on your medium/fast action spinnerbait rod or your first cranking rod (medium/moderate). Thanks for your help.
I've seen 30 frikin trump n Clinton ads today between all the googans and gene. I can't take anymore!!!!! Quit mixing politics and my favorite sport! lol
From using spinning for a long time (left hand crank, right handed person, I like left hand crank casting reels for working the action and hook setting with my right.
Jonathan Servellon This is asked all the time, and it basically comes down to what they have always used. But I did have one guy say he specifically did it to relieve strain. He fishes baitcaster(right retrieve) and spinning(left retrieve) equally, and this way he spreads the straight of holding the rod, twitching, casting, etc. Though I think he was ambidextrous and kinda does that with everything, fishing or not.
Thanks for the info. I'm new to fishing and am only up to 4 baitcasting + 1 spinning reel currently. If I were to mirror the lineup you've presented here I have a question on gear ratio & line. I didn't hear you state the gear ratio or the lb test/type line on your 7' Medium-Fast rod that you use for light T-rigs & jigs. What do you use here? Also don't think you mentioned the lb test/type line for your 7' Medium-Moderate that you use for smaller crankbaits. What is recommended for that setup? Thanks for your help.
I agree with the comment from John K. when he said a chart would be helpful. So please either chart the rods with the baits or list out the must have rods. Thanks!
im new to bass fishing just started this summer got a abu garcia blackmax II combo to learn to use bait caster lover your videos they teach me alot want to up grade to a better set up all around i mostly bank fish i want to get no. 8 black out need help with and reel thanks.
Thanks for the video. I'm newer at Bass fishing. My first 2 rods were 6'6" rods medium power fast action. I noticed none of your rods were under 7'. I was always under the impression that anything that big would be for saltwater use. I just bought a 7' xtra fast action Penn Battle 2 combo. Should I use this rod for fishing heavy cover? What do you recommend I use my 6'6" rod for?
I used to fish with 6ft 6 rods when I was younger, but then I got taller and a 7 ft or 7 ft 6 rod just feels more natural. you can use the shorter rods to fish with lighter line and target smaller fish, like I wouldn't go try to catch a bluegill with a 7 ft rod, I would choose a smaller rod and reel.
Thomas JTN Thanks. Yeah I think I'm ready to try a baitcaster and a larger pole. I have been bass fishing with the 6 6 rods for about 4 years now, but have caught plenty of 2 and 3 pounders. I'm usually fishing from a canoe or kyak so the shorter rods are nice.
yeah if i was fishing from a kayak i would not really want anything longer than 7 feet, seems like a shorter rod would be ideal so its easier to manuever.
Hello sir, Greate video. Did u say that u used Fluro carbon line on the heavy gear as a main line? I like that first setup where u used a 65 lb braid line which will be ideal for me to target bigger baramundi and MJ in our area. Please provide full spec for that set up or similar. Am from Kerala state , India.
Gene, you said you use your 7' med power fast action rod for spinnerbaits but then towards the end you said you use a moderate action for them. Which do you use as I'm trying to decide which I should use.
Quick question. The 3rd rod you mentioned (7ft) was one if your favorites, what was the gear ratio preference for that setup? You mentioned the Abu Garcia but didnt mention the gear ratio..
loving the vids so far. Learning about the medium power crankbait rods and drop shot. Gonna pick up a medium power moderate action 7.4" st. croix mojo bass glass baitcaster. Curious the thoughts on it. Money is tight so its either between that or the medium heavy power model. I fish smaller inland lakes in southeast michigan im also debating on a 6 speed baitcaster or a 7 speed gonna be throwing crank baits that dive around 10 feet or less
Gene, on the third rod/reel combo, the Abu Garcia Revo you use for topwater/buzzbaits, I don't believe you mentioned the line you use. I would think 15 lb. copolymer but just wanted to check...thanks!
I have 6 but one is for saltwater or big catfish. I learned that you can detect bites easier with the right rod. I use a 7 foot medium rod for texas rigs with lighter weights and i can drag it slow and feel the bottom with that light t rig and just hop the bait over snags if i dont set the hook on it lmao
Hey Gene, I am looking to add another baitcasting rod to my arsenal and I am sort of unsure what I should do. I already have a Duckett MMP 7'6" heavy and two 7'0" medium heavy setups. I have been debating getting the medium 7'0" Duckett. A few techniques I am wanting to start using are topwater spooks, square bills and traps. I normally use 1/2 oz lures and am worried the medium might be too light for those techniques. I have also considered adding a 7'3" MH. I know you have moved on from Duckett, but I would like advice from someone that has experience with them. Thanks and keep up the good work!
Hey Gene I fish a lot of urban ponds here in Las Vegas and I was wondering what some good lures/techniques are for big fish during late summer/early fall? The pond I fish is 14 acres with a maximum depth of 10 to 12 feet. The water quality is clear to stained in some areas. There is an abundance of bluegills, crayfish, and other small bass. The bottom composition is mostly grass patches, gravel roadbeds, and rocks. Any tips will help, thanks!
I really liked my fenwick aetos til I snapped it down by the reel seat! manufactures defecti think.. ill probably get another one. I really did like it! also I really want that concept C!
I live in Hawaii and mostly do big game salt water fishing, just bought my first bass rod and reel. I only plan on running my one carbonlite 2.0 with the Johnny Morris reel. Do I really need more rods?
Thanks for the tips. I've just started fishing and there is so much to learn about. I appreciate the help and I really like your videos. Do you have any advice for starting rods for kids (my 2 girls have shown interest, 8 and 10)
Is that Medium Heavy Blackout rod the same as the Blackout currently being sold by 13 fishing? (July 2023) It sure looks similar. I love the new Blackouts!
Gene, what would you say for a top three lineup for those of us that have to haul our gear around lakes and up trails to said lakes for bank fishing, or for when I'm starting kayak fishing this year, and space is a premium?
You said you fish spinnerbaits on your medium fast action and you also said to use the medium heavy moderate action rod for spinner baits. What situation would I use one over the other?
I know this is an older video but I keep coming back to it for tips. I’ve only been using a bait casting rod for a year but I want to build up my rod/reel arsenal. My budget is just a little tight. Thanks for the info @flukemaster
I have a new Scott martin Okuma 7'6 heavy for my swimbait and deep crankbait try these skeet reese rods s glass crankbait rod And I noticed my megabass swimbait rises not sinks . Good in case it comes off.
fluke, my son and I mostly shore fish. having six poles and our tackle is a bit much. so my question is what two rods would you recommend. my son is only five and is using a kids medium 6' spinning rod. and a second old trout rod. I have an 8'6'' medium heavy spinning and a 7'3 casting rod.
What's the right rod for softbaits in saltwater.... for example I am using 4 or 5 inch paddle tail with 14 to 20 gram jig heads and Texas rigs to target mj and barramundi in estuaries
Gene, first of all, thanks for all the great vids! Very informative!! If you had one spinning rod, what power and action would you pick? To throw anywhere from floating worms to lightweight topwater? Thanks!
hi, i have been watching yours videos for a week , they are spectacular and very usefull, i want to ask , what do you prefer , braided line with a fluorocarbon leader or complete fluorocarbon line in the reel ? thanks a lot from argentina.
Gene, this is one of the very best videos I have ever watched. I learned sssooo much more descriptive, detailed, technique-specific information than I ever have in my 4 years of bass fishing. HOW THE F DID YOU SHOOT YOURSELF IN THE FOOT playing quick draw????
@koviack no he's under cover. His real name is Henry Ross. Even though some old chick thinks his name is Harry... Harry pair of testicles. He pounded an asian chick like a mallard duck then fell for a chick with short term memory loss.

+Andrew Blasi Cool Andrew. Keep watching man. I just want you to learn and go catch fish.
Gene brother your the man, this just summed up my rods selections for Pickwick this weekend. You sir are the man!
You've got one of the best bass fishing channels on RUclips. I've learned so much from your vids. Thanks, man!
The Mustad Grip Pin hook is by far the best hook I've ever used for pitching! You're one of the first I've seen using it. I work for the company that manufactures those for Mustad. Got some new stuff along those lines coming out soon. Can't wait!
I shopped and bought these six combos just finished collecting set.
Then you obviously have more money than sense.
It was a pleasure meeting you at Grady's. I was the guy that asked about converting his salt water wife to bass fishing. thank you for all that you do.
It was good to meet you too man. You're wife is a good sport. I have a feeling it's going to be hard to convert her
Hey can you do a video explaining what kind of line to use and what test and when to use it?
Each rod is different.
Some rods use 6lbs to 10lbs others want 10-30 lbs test.
Look on rod .
Tactical basin has that video and they go in depth and explain things better than fluke master
This is a much needed video. Thanks Gene!
I have used this line up to select my rods. At least my new rods to replace some older ones. Great info, exactly what I was looking for.
Thank the lord I found this video. It really helped, thanks man.
Thanks Brett, I'm glad I could help
how u get ur rods to bend up?try to get back to me ASAP I'm buying new rods tomorrow
I've come back to this video several times since you posted it. It would be awesome to have all this info in a chart or diagram.
Knowing what rod you are using for certain bait types is easily overlooked with a casual fisherman. Thanks for the incite, and please consider creating a chart for us visual learners ;-)
just as easy to grab a pen and paper like what I'm doing
I put it all down on a handy spreadsheet. Now I just need to figure out what I want to buy.
Great stuff Gene! I just shared this clip with a new fishing buddy! We were just talking about rod and reel set ups! Many thanks!
Mark Polsky Cool. Glad I could help.
Thanks for this Gene. Just bought four new reels and was wondering what to get for rods. I have my shopping list now. cheers!
I was watching your live chat and the guys in the red shirt flat bill with a fish in his face is me!!!! Man that's so awesome thanks!!!
I love this video! As a budget fisherman this video helps a lot. I'm sure i will watch many more times later down the road.
Tell me if I heard this correctly but did he say a $125 swim bait??? Why? And where?
for $125 fish
I just bought 4 whopper ploppers. Cost me about $72. I need to buy an assortment of crankbaits, swimbaits, and jerkbaits. I bought a lews Mach 2 spinning reel on clearance for $100.
Here is my takeaway on rod flexes. The "flex" is how stiff the rod is, and the "action" is where the rod begins to bend when pressure is applied.
The "power" is how stiff the rod is. Which is the flex of the rod. You won't find it called flex when shopping for a rod though.
We see so many boats with rod storage FULL of rod/reel combos, but if you plan it right, you don't need that many. Good info.
Click on the link in the description and you’ll get a good look at it.
Enjoying and appreciate your channel and videos man!
Great video Gene lol I've been waiting on your opinion for this vid forever. I was the one that asked you about it on bass resource awhile back.
Awesome video, Gene. I'm looking at getting a 13 Fishing reel myself. Tight lines!
Would love to see a video like this devoted to spinning reels/rods.
Great video, love watching learning videos. Just purchased a shimano curado 150 Dc.6:4 gear ratio, this video will help me choose my rod.thanks.
The Zebco 33 is the way to go..
yeah if you 8 or 80 years old but not for these guys I am sorry but ol ZEBCO JUST COULDN'T HANDLE THE ABUSE OF THIS TYPE OF BASS FISHING.
+FISHING and VLOGGING WHY ARE YOU TYPING IN ALL CAPS
+Black&Blue BLACK AND BLUE he was being sarcastic, chill out with your all caps
Logan Lykins lol
I stepped up to one of those snow white combos.
Good overview, nice work!
with the knowledge you shared I have a better idea of what I want for my cranking setup in the spring. thanks for the great informative video!
+Kevin Vue You're welcome Kevin
This is an old video but I really wanted to point out how much help it was. I love my glass cranking rod for buzzbaits! I totally agree, I love the give in the rod - lets the fish have it for that extra second!
so would that rod be good for throwing other topwater lures also?
It could be good for poppers, but i think you might need a bit more backbone for walking baits like spooks.
20 pounds of crap with a 2 pound bass...so true!!! great video, I finally understood how to put a combo.
+Moises Rosales Thanks Moises
thanks for all your lessons flukemaster I always do what you teach in your videos I like this set up you have I'm going to getting probably different brands or cheaper but I will thanks
You're welcome
Quit mixing politics and my favorite sport! lol
thanks bro been watching for afew months now thank you and god bless
Great video. I am using Biospawn because of seeing them on your videos. Great product and baits
5 years later, this video stands the test of time!!
Why do people use right hand retrieve baitcast, and left hand spinning?
Jonathan Servellon Idk why people dont just left hand retrieve all the things, saves so much time.
Luger718 Agree, I tried using a right hand retrieve and it just didn't feel right for me.
People do for one of 2 reasons or both. 1 it's just what they have always used or 2 they are right handed and want to cast with there right hand
Though I think he was ambidextrous and kinda does that with everything, fishing or not.
sweet video man. great information for advanced beginners. ill be coming back to your channel for some more info
Thanks Nicholas.
no problem sir. i watch all yours and your buddies vids
Love the Finwick rods !!!!!!!
Great informational video, you always put out solid stuff. I've learned a lot, thanks.
Excellent video Gene!
I've been using 12 lb copolymer on my cranking rod and it works well.
That is a lot of rods to me.
What happened to all the duckett rods?
+Clay Milburn: Maybe has to represent his sponsors only? Ducket rods are very nice
Lots of great info in this video...thanks, Gene!!
Great video, your excellent at explaining in detail 🤘🏼
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the video. Very informative. Only suggestion to make it better would be to list out the equipment below the video.
Thanks man. I started to do that in my newer videos.
I agree with the comment from John K. when he said a chart would be helpful. So please either chart the rods with the baits or list out the must have rods. Thanks!
Make your own. It's easy to do in Excel. I made one up by pausing the video and typing out the details for each of the 6 rod recommendations.
I love that lake. Im from that area. Washington- wilkes. That is were my childhood was spent.
im new to bass fishing just started this summer got a abu garcia blackmax II combo to learn to use bait caster lover your videos they teach me alot want to up grade to a better set up all around i mostly bank fish i want to get no. 8 black out need help with and reel thanks.
Love my Blackout rod, thanks to Gene!
love those 13 fishing reels however the price is just outrageous lol
i just got a 13 spinning reel from dicks for 15 bucks. lucky deal. was 25 on clearance and i got another 10 off for doing a survey 🤙
The more money you pay for something the better your gonna get usually
Exactly the video I was looking for! Thanks man
What color line do you tend to look for. I see everything from green to blue to white to black to pink. What color line have you seen works the best
you should come to East bank lake Lanier close to Buford I've seen a 5 bust on a shallow water bed in a cove
Thanks for the video. I'm newer at Bass fishing. My first 2 rods were 6'6" rods medium power fast action. I noticed none of your rods were under 7'. JDsSportsRoom I'm a year late but I'd say moderate so you could throw many other things on it
This is what I have been after. It is good looking and durable.
Quick question. The 3rd rod you mentioned (7ft) was one if your favorites, what was the gear ratio preference for that setup? You mentioned the Abu Garcia but didnt mention the gear ratio..
7:1
Great video Gene.
Good stuff but it would be nice if you put in the description or something each rod, reel, line setup you showed
loving the vids so far. Learning about the medium power crankbait rods and drop shot. Gonna pick up a medium power moderate action 7.4" st. croix mojo bass glass baitcaster. Curious the thoughts on it. Money is tight so its either between that or the medium heavy power model. I fish smaller inland lakes in southeast michigan
im also debating on a 6 speed baitcaster or a 7 speed gonna be throwing crank baits that dive around 10 feet or less
This is a very informative and useful video. Thanks
You’re welcome
Awesome video thanks for the tips
Gene, on the third rod/reel combo, the Abu Garcia Revo you use for topwater/buzzbaits, I don't believe you mentioned the line you use. I would think 15 lb. copolymer but just wanted to check...thanks!
David Christensen Exactly. Co-poly
Had always though copolymer sinks.... So no good for top water
What will be my first rod I need? I always done Salt water fishing, now trying my hand at fresh water fishing.
6 rods?!? Holy sh!t!! I use 2 ... a 7' medium spinning and a 5' 4" ultralite spinning.
Since you didn’t mention your line but on a few of the reels. Can you tell me more about your line choices?
Thanks for the tips. I've just started fishing and there is so much to learn about. I appreciate the help and I really like your videos. Do you have any advice for starting rods for kids (my 2 girls have shown interest, 8 and 10)
Great video Gene!
Is that Medium Heavy Blackout rod the same as the Blackout currently being sold by 13 fishing? (July 2023) It sure looks similar. I love the new Blackouts!
The newest one has a better more up to date blank and components.
Flukemaster. That fenwick for your smaller crankbaits ... What type of line do you have on it?
You should do vlogs especially for the BMC next year
On the fifth and last bait caster, the 7'0" MH, is he saying it is another moderate action, or a moderate-fast action?
I know this is an older video but I keep coming back to it for tips. I’ve only been using a bait casting rod for a year but I want to build up my rod/reel arsenal. My budget is just a little tight. Thanks for the info @flukemaster
same
Can you do a review on the blackout rod ?
I have a new Scott martin Okuma 7'6 heavy for my swimbait and deep crankbait
try these skeet reese rods s glass crankbait rod
And I noticed my megabass swimbait rises not sinks .
It would be fun to see you fish other fish than bass. Maybe som perch or zanders
Gene, first of all, thanks for all the great vids! Very informative!!
If you had one spinning rod, what power and action would you pick? To throw anywhere from floating worms to lightweight topwater?
Thanks!
Thanks man. I'd get a Medium spinning rod somewhere around 7 feet long.
Great video ...I'm learning to bass fish and any info helps🙂
