I typically use a medium heavy 7’ fast action rod paired with a 7:1:1 reel as an all around combo, you can throw anything from weightless plastics to 1/2 oz chatterbaits. Just a tip for anyone interested
@mzahra1 ain't that the truth. And honestly 3, casting rods and 2 spinning I think you could definitly get away with for sure. Sure it's prob nice to have a rod and reel setup for everything but come on is it REALLY needed lol.
This is the kind of video I've been searching for for months and thank god a person that's reputable and knowledgeable like you has made it. Thank you now I feel good knowing I can do ALMOST everything on this type of rod being a medium action moderate to fast or extra fast rod. Could 10lb test be the LIGHTEST you would go for most of these applications for fish that don't get more than a few pounds and if I am the type of person that's not a violent hook setting person?

Colorado_koolaid from all the advice ive been ever given from Fluke himself, Tactical Bassin, you DEFINITELY wanna go with the rod that has the MODERATE ACTION, im actually gonna be purchasing a DOBYN'S FURY SERIES 7"2 MEDIUM HEAVY POWER WITH A MODERATE FAST ACTION, they actually call it a MediumHeavy Cranking Rod
From what flukemaster said in another video is that if he had to choose one rod it would be a medium heavy fast action rod, that's what I bought with a fast reel I'm going to give it a try and hopefully I made the right choice.
Great info Gene! FYI: since I use sit on 10' kayak, most of the time, I prefer 6'6" medium fast rod instead of 7' medium fast rod. In tight creeks, even shorter helps. Let us know if your increased kayaking ever changes your views on rod and reel selection.

These series of videos are incredible. This is the type of information that always seems elusive to us new fisherman. A similar video would be really nice for line types like when to use all braid, when to use all flouro, when to use what type of leader, etc. Maybe I'm just dumb, but I need to see stuff laid out plainly to really get it.
That was a LOT of useful information! I've been fishing spinning reels all my 60+ years. Recently my son suggested I start using baitcasters. Your channel has been the best source of information, real useful information on RUclips. Thanks!

This series of vids is really helpful. I wondered why everyone recommended a medium rod for spinnerbaits and chatterbaits I hated it. That would be because I have to many 1/2 ounce lures. lol

Jinn, This rod is seasonal in SoCal, It is my go to in cold season 842C Conquest, But like April to may 844c conquest will be my go to rod. Great video and agree with all you said.

@@TheFlyingJerzey the black max casting reel is an awesome reel to learn on like I did and I still use even though I have more expensive reels I did not care for the rod that came with the combo so I put it on a diawa aird x medium rod and I love it!
Hello Gene, great video. Quick clarifying question. On the first series of lures/baits that you covered (spinner, buzz, chatter and top water baits) are those all lures you recommend fishing on a medium power moderate action rod or just a fast action rod? I understood the last grouping you covered, ie small square bills, lipless, shakey heads, finesse jigs and texas rigs were all fast/xfast action. Just want to make sure I got the first group correct. Great video as always Fluke! So much good conversion on this... like the Dobyns rods. Have a 704 which is rated as a heavy, I bought it to learn the jig. But it’s a little more towards the medium heavy side. An amazing all around pole! It has enough tip to fish a spinnerbait but the back bone is outstanding!! Conversely I bought a 703(medium heavy) for spinnerbaits and seems to have to much tip for a good hookset at times! Also, it’s cool to see how people fish different. I for one like the 7:1 for bottom fishing to pick up the slack quicker but a 6:3:1 for spinnerbiats. I don’t mind reeling faster when they want it that way because to me it makes me feel more in the bait more... example: if it’s moving fast I can get in the groove easier and makes it more realistic if I reel fast, where if I’m reeling slow and the baits moving fast from using a high gear ratio It feels weird like I’m not in sync with the bait with how I’m reeling. Thanks for all your tips bro!!

What line setup would you recommend when spooling (not a baitcasting reel, but a spinning) a spinning reel. Like you did a video on money saving tips for baitcaster reels. Awesome video Gene. The only thing with me on a kayak is I take five rods with me. I have to give and take on every way I fish. Whether that being my power pf rod, my line, and the type of baits I'm throwing out there. Plus I don't have the funds to buy a couple extra rods and spare reels with this line or that line sitting on it waiting to go. But as always great video
There are medium fast action rods that are labeled from one fourth to three fourth oz that help out with bigger baits. Posion adrena and zodias make some.
I have a medium/heavy fast action 7' rod with a 6.3 reel on 12 lb. line. How do you think this pairs with the texas rig? Should I get a lighter rod for my lighter tackle ? Thanks, your channel is the best.
Two questions gene. 1. When you use braid and a fluoro/mono leader would you use a light wire hook or a thicker hook? 2. Since 30 pound braid is the equivalent to 8 lb mono then what makes it okay to use since that would typically be too small on a baitcaster (by mono standards). Thanks as always!

This video was really helpful. I picked up a MH glass cranking rod (it's in the mail) and was trying to figure out if I could throw baits like spinnerbaits and chatterbaits on it as well -- I hear a lot of mixed things, but you seem to have no issues on a medium rod which should be similar.
great video , love watching and learning and showing my kids and nephews what I learn.. question? what kinda lure is best to use when fishing in river,, pond and lakes are pretty far here where I live so I normally fish in river. I've caught nice 4 lb bass in it with senkos but would like to learn to use top water lures and spinner baits and so on.. thank you once again
these rods are the best.. you can even do weightless and drop shot with them. I use 6 lb mono mainly.. is it worth it to do flouro leaders using that light of mono? I fish Castaic lake its a high pressured super clear lake.. I do pretty good with mono most the time.. though its still easy to skunk from shore here. since there is only a few miles of shoreline to fish at upper and lower combined. I also like drop shot and snag a lot so not sure if tying leaders all day would be fun. and mono so cheap to respool.
You mentioned using a mono leader / braid mainline for topwater walking baits... do you feel that it's necessary to use a leader for topwater in general, or is that specifically related to imparting the proper action with the walking bait? Loving this series, gonna have to watch them all multiple times to absorb, digest, and analyze all the info presented, sir.
Great video Fluke! My main rod is the Castaway Taranis CX1 7 foot Med Heavy and it's a great all around rod with the Lews Tournament Pro G Speed Spool TPG1SH 7:5:1 gear ratio. I throw 30# suffix 832 braid to a seaguar 14-17# red label or invx leader depending on where I'm fishing.

So I’m going to be getting my first ever “medium fast” rod and honestly can’t wait I’ve got MH and I’ve got H but now this one will be my dedicated cranking/moving bait rod some people prefer to go with moderate action rod is there really a big difference between this Mediuk fast and let’s say a MH Mod? I see that you use yours for a variety of cranks and moving baits so I don’t feel like I’m making a bad choice by going with this one hour suggesting
As a moderate-budget rod, I (as well as others) have found that the Garcia Veritas line runs a bit stiffer than others...so their 'medium' is more like somewhere in-between a medium and medium-heavy. Makes for an interesting either/or if you're only carrying one rig and need to cover different types of baits.
Question, what length is the fluorocarbon leader typically that you have attached to the braid? I have purchased several Medium Heavy/ Heavy action rods/reels and opted to utilize braid. Specifically for heavy cover/grass. Also, what kind of knot do you utilize for the connection between the two lines? Thank you sir.

Fluke, I have a question. I bought a 6’7 fate chrome rod medium fast. I was wonder, not using a leader, what type of line mono/flouro/braid would be the best overall for this rod for what you can fish with a medium/fast. I have all the baits you mentioned in the video, but just wanting to use one type and pound of line. Thanks for all you do for us.
This is great info but I definitely recommend throwing almost any moving bait on a medium heavy fast or extra fast and like he said if your going to fish a chatter bait bump it up to a medium heavy power rod
Great video as always.. I am seeing some use a moderate fast taper now for spinnerbaits and chaters. Also I am switching to support good American made rod companies like ALX, Kistler, Mccain, St Croix .
Yo Gene! When using the DSLR take it off auto focus when you have all that going on in the background or if using auto use F8 or more for iris. If you weren't using auto focus....well, then get better at setting that focal point. Messin' with ya man, good info as always.
With the medium action rod setup you have do you still use braid to fluorocarbon leader with the squarebills and lipless crankbaits or do you switch the reel with just fluorocarbon

Hi Gene, i have been watching your videos for quite a while now and i have followed suit with you on a lot of things. I have a couple of questions on this video. First, you said you can catch big fish on the medium action rod. What do you consider big? What if you hook into a huge bass, pike, or muskie throwing a 3/8 oz bait? 2nd, if you're throwing a 1/4 or 3/8 oz. lure with a trailer would you still use that medium action rod?
If I hook into a big one I will just back off on the drag a little and take my time. I've caught a 30lb catfish on a Light action spinning rod and 6lb line because I had the drag set right and took my time. I would still use a Med action rod. Don't worry about adding the weight of the trailer. We go by the weight of the jig and what it says on the package.
I just bought a Shakespeare durango medium actions 6ft 2 piece baitcaster for $10 at Walmart and I got a abugarcia baitcaster reel I'm so excited to fish with it ASAP when I can go out fishing🎣 again 👍💯

I finally bought my first rod and reel. I bought a medium mod fast 6’ ugly stick/ Shakespeare. Can I throw lures with it, it’s a spinner rod. Thank you
when would you use a 6'6" medium power fast action casting rod? I have one laying around that hasn't been used in years. and reason why I ask is because I've got a few booyah micro jigs that are like 1/8oz and a 1/4oz and wanted a more compact rod. plus I'm thinking like maybe 15lb braid on a lews lfs 7.5 or the next size down in this reel line up on this 6'6" medium rod for tight quarters and target casting all from shore for very light vegetation, and down timber and fishing open waters towards weed lines.
I use that exact setup for wacky rig (unweighted worms of any kind), small spinnerbaits, small crank baits, and this summer, I'll be trying light top water. I also like it for light jerkbaits. It's replaced my medium/fast spinning rods (as a find baitcasters more comfortable)
I haven't fished square bills alot, and I hear you all say that you "rip it through grass". My question is this... do you worry about the grass that gets caught on the hooks that you have to clean off after each retrieve? Does the grass being on the hooks affect fish biting or not?
Great video Gene. Quick question I have ben fishing a weightless senko on a medium moderate action rod and I seem to be having some problems getting a good consistent hookset. Would you recommend a heavier rod or an over the shoulder hookset? (I normally set the hook to the side) Thanks for the great content. Tight lines.
Is copolymer an okay choice as a leader material? I only have one medium fast baitcaster that I use to throw all my lures, including top/suspending/diving baits. Seems like most of them are neutral buoyancy, so I could use that and not have to retie a mono/fluoro leader when switching between floating and diving baits. Or is it better to just suck it up and retie the leader (or cut the leader off entirely) when I switch between baits?
Was this M rod rated for up to 3/8? My medium baitcasting rod is rated for 1/4-5/8. I’d have to assume it would be good for the 1/4 to 1/2 ounce jigs/spinnerbaits that I’ll be throwing on it? Most of what I will throw is 3/8 and I have no intention on getting another rod for the few 1/2 ounce jigs.
I have good rods and reels but just sort of figured out that i wasn’t using the right baits with my rods last season (I’m new and learning I’m sorry) and now i feel like i have spent good money on good stuff but that i don’t have the right stuff 😩
Zach SD realized that not all my setups are medium light and i do have a medium rod so I’m not as stressed anymore i hope you’re happy with your rods and reels and you catch nothing but Mondos this season
Great Video, one question though. Even within the medium rod category they are a few price points. What is "better" about a $250 rod vs a $100 rod? And can your average angler even tell the difference?
I don't think the average angler can tell the difference. The 70 to 120 dollar rods are so good these days I don't even notice the 250 dollar ones anymore.
a medium is my go to also, i ride a grom motorcycle as my daily. so i cant take some huge poles. i have a ugly stick 6 foot and a ugly stick 6'6 both are two piece ones. but ya the shorter one is more like a medium light and the longer one is a little more stiffer. but still i love em because you can throw a lot of baits on just one pole and it even does finesse really well. i also like to take out a ultralight incase the big ones just wont bite and try for some big sunfish or crappie too. though sometimes i tend to just throw the small gear if those fish are biting which can maybe make me miss some bigger fish going after those same ones.. though i have caught a nice 5lb+ largie on a small 1/8oz fly.

Hey Gene, is there 1 single rod that will cover most of the situations where you would fish a crankbait (0-20 divers, squarebills, and lipless)? I know it might not be a perfect rod, but a good enough rod for all 3 baits will be perfect as I am just trying to conserve space on my kayak
Gene. I've just started fishing with braid. I am going to purchase a Lews heavy 7'6"" rod with a Lews super duty reel 8.0.1 for a pitching and flipping rod. I am looking at the seaguar flipping braid in black. I am some what confused about color of baits and line. I read and hear that dark color lures should be used in dark water because it can be seen by the fish. Reading about the new Seguar braid in black they say it is virtually invisible in the water. Can you help me out here? Oh. Great video.
It's kinda like braid doesn't disappear in water like floro does, so when you use say high vis green it stands out more in the water, when you're punching more specifically there's not really a lot of sunlight that's under that grass, so the idea is even in clear water it's dark under matts so black line will be harder to spot in theory. With punching inTheory the bait is falling right in front of the basses face and the dark color will be easier to pick up. Again all in theory I use braid 70% of the time even in stained water never had a problem
So would a medium fast spinning set up be just as good for all these techniques you mentioned for this baitcasting setup? I have a MH fast baitcasting setup and a M fast spinning setup that I use for everything so in my mind I haven't been able to justify getting a MF baitcasting rig. Am I missing out? Is there another combo you'd suggest to fill in the gap between what I have? I prefer to carry minimal gear so all around combos work better for me.

Awesome video Gene. The only thing with me on a kayak is I take five rods with me. I have to give and take on every way I fish. Whether that being my power pf rod, my line, and the type of baits I'm throwing out there. Plus I don't have the funds to buy a couple extra rods and spare reels with this line or that line sitting on it waiting to go. But as always great video
There are medium fast action rods that are labeled from one fourth to three fourth oz that help out with bigger baits. Posion adrena and zodias make some.
I have a medium/heavy fast action 7' rod with a 6.3 reel on 12 lb. line. How do you think this pairs with the texas rig? Should I get a lighter rod for my lighter tackle ? Thanks, your channel is the best.

Two questions gene. 1. When you use braid and a fluoro/mono leader would you use a light wire hook or a thicker hook? 2. Since 30 pound braid is the equivalent to 8 lb mono then what makes it okay to use since that would typically be too small on a baitcaster (by mono standards). Thanks as always!

This video was really helpful. I picked up a MH glass cranking rod (it's in the mail) and was trying to figure out if I could throw baits like spinnerbaits and chatterbaits on it as well -- I hear a lot of mixed things, but you seem to have no issues on a medium rod which should be similar.

these rods are the best.. you can even do weightless and drop shot with them. I use 6 lb mono mainly.. is it worth it to do flouro leaders using that light of mono? I fish Castaic lake its a high pressured super clear lake.. I do pretty good with mono most the time.. though its still easy to skunk from shore here. since there is only a few miles of shoreline to fish at upper and lower combined. I also like drop shot and snag a lot so not sure if tying leaders all day would be fun. and mono so cheap to respool.
You mentioned using a mono leader / braid mainline for topwater walking baits... do you feel that it's necessary to use a leader for topwater in general, or is that specifically related to imparting the proper action with the walking bait? Loving this series, gonna have to watch them all multiple times to absorb, digest, and analyze all the info presented, sir.

Great video Fluke! My main rod is the Castaway Taranis CX1 7 foot Med Heavy and it's a great all around rod with the Lews Tournament Pro G Speed Spool TPG1SH 7:5:1 gear ratio. I throw 30# suffix 832 braid to a seaguar 14-17# red label or invx leader depending on where I'm fishing.
Thanks for this video Gene. I have a similar setup for the same uses and was going to add another combo for kayak fishing. Would you recommend getting another medium/fast setup since I don't use bottom contact lures over 1/4 oz and half ounce top water lures.

So I’m going to be getting my first ever “medium fast” rod and honestly can’t wait I’ve got MH and I’ve got H but now this one will be my dedicated cranking/moving bait rod some people prefer to go with moderate action rod is there really a big difference between this Mediuk fast and let’s say a MH Mod? I see that you use yours for a variety of cranks and moving baits so I don’t feel like I’m making a bad choice by going with this one hour suggesting
As a moderate-budget rod, I (as well as others) have found that the Garcia Veritas line runs a bit stiffer than others...so their 'medium' is more like somewhere in-between a medium and medium-heavy. Makes for an interesting either/or if you're only carrying one rig and need to cover different types of baits.

Question, what length is the fluorocarbon leader typically that you have attached to the braid? I have purchased several Medium Heavy/ Heavy action rods/reels and opted to utilize braid. Yes it's fine, bear in mind that some baits are heavier than stated, spinnerbaits come to mind

I have a question. I bought a 6’7 fate chrome rod medium fast. I was wonder, not using a leader, what type of line mono/flouro/braid would be the best overall for this rod for what you can fish with a medium/fast. I have all the baits you mentioned in the video, but just wanting to use one type and pound of line. Thanks for all you do for us.

This is great info but I definitely recommend throwing almost any moving bait on a medium heavy fast or extra fast and like he said if your going to fish a chatter bait bump it up to a medium heavy power rod

Yo Gene! When using the DSLR take it off auto focus when you have all that going on in the background or if using auto use F8 or more for iris. If you weren't using auto focus....well, then get better at setting that focal point. Messin' with ya man, good info as always.
With the medium action rod setup you have do you still use braid to fluorocarbon leader with the squarebills and lipless crankbaits or do you switch the reel with just fluorocarbon

Your rod should have the writing on it saying its weight capacity. (Mine for example is 4 lbs to 14 lbs.)

Hi Gene, i have been watching your videos for quite a while now and i have followed suit with you on a lot of things. I have a couple of questions on this video. First, you said you can catch big fish on the medium action rod. What do you consider big? What if you hook into a huge bass, pike, or muskie throwing a 3/8 oz bait? 2nd, if you're throwing a 1/4 or 3/8 oz. lure with a trailer would you still use that medium action rod?
If I hook into a big one I will just back off on the drag a little and take my time. I've caught a 30lb catfish on a Light action spinning rod and 6lb line because I had the drag set right and took my time. I would still use a Med action rod. Don't worry about adding the weight of the trailer. We go by the weight of the jig and what it says on the package.
I just bought a Shakespeare durango medium actions 6ft 2 piece baitcaster for $10 at Walmart and I got a abugarcia baitcaster reel I'm so excited to fish with it ASAP when I can go out fishing🎣 again 👍💯

when would you use a 6'6" medium power fast action casting rod? I have one laying around that hasn't been used in years. and reason why I ask is because I've got a few booyah micro jigs that are like 1/8oz and a 1/4oz and wanted a more compact rod. plus I'm thinking like maybe 15lb braid on a lews lfs 7.5 or the next size down in this reel line up on this 6'6" medium rod for tight quarters and target casting all from shore for very light vegetation, and down timber and fishing open waters towards weed lines.
I use that exact setup for wacky rig (unweighted worms of any kind), small spinnerbaits, small crank baits, and this summer, I'll be trying light top water.
I also like it for light jerkbaits.
It's replaced my medium/fast spinning rods (as a find baitcasters more comfortable)
I haven't fished square bills alot, and I hear you all say that you "rip it through grass". My question is this... do you worry about the grass that gets caught on the hooks that you have to clean off after each retrieve? Does the grass being on the hooks affect fish biting or not?
Great video Gene. Quick question I have ben fishing a weightless senko on a medium moderate action rod and I seem to be having some problems getting a good consistent hookset. Would you recommend a heavier rod or an over the shoulder hookset? (I normally set the hook to the side) Thanks for the great content. Tight lines.

Is copolymer an okay choice as a leader material? I only have one medium fast baitcaster that I use to throw all my lures, including top/suspending/diving baits. Seems like most of them are neutral buoyancy, so I could use that and not have to retie a mono/fluoro leader when switching between floating and diving baits. Or is it better to just suck it up and retie the leader (or cut the leader off entirely) when I switch between baits?
i would say copoly is fine
the only thing I would do differently than what you've stated is for top water lures, I'd change to a mono leader since mono line floats
Was this M rod rated for up to 3/8? My medium baitcasting rod is rated for 1/4-5/8. I’d have to assume it would be good for the 1/4 to 1/2 ounce jigs/spinnerbaits that I’ll be throwing on it? Most of what I will throw is 3/8 and I have no intention on getting another rod for the few 1/2 ounce jigs.
What do you think is the best Med fast rod on the market for the money? I'm talking on a budget.

Great Video, one question though. Even within the medium rod category they are a few price points. What is "better" about a $250 rod vs a $100 rod? And can your average angler even tell the difference?
I don't think the average angler can tell the difference. The 70 to 120 dollar rods are so good these days I don't even notice the 250 dollar ones anymore.
a medium is my go to also, i ride a grom motorcycle as my daily. so i cant take some huge poles. i have a ugly stick 6 foot and a ugly stick 6'6 both are two piece ones. but ya the shorter one is more like a medium light and the longer one is a little more stiffer. but still i love em because you can throw a lot of baits on just one pole and it even does finesse really well. i also like to take out a ultralight incase the big ones just wont bite and try for some big sunfish or crappie too. though sometimes i tend to just throw the small gear if those fish are biting which can maybe make me miss some bigger fish going after those same ones.. though i have caught a nice 5lb+ largie on a small 1/8oz fly.
If this is my only moving bait rod including topwater. Should I just keep a mono leader? And the braid is for distance on cast right?

Hey Gene, is there 1 single rod that will cover most of the situations where you would fish a crankbait (0-20 divers, squarebills, and lipless)? I know it might not be a perfect rod, but a good enough rod for all 3 baits will be perfect as I am just trying to conserve space on my kayak

Gene. I've just started fishing with braid. I am going to purchase a Lews heavy 7'6"" rod with a Lews super duty reel 8.0.1 for a pitching and flipping rod. I am looking at the seaguar flipping braid in black. I am some what confused about color of baits and line. I read and hear that dark color lures should be used in dark water because it can be seen by the fish. Reading about the new Seguar braid in black they say it is virtually invisible in the water. Can you help me out here? Oh. Great video.
It's kinda like braid doesn't disappear in water like floro does, so when you use say high vis green it stands out more in the water, when you're punching more specifically there's not really a lot of sunlight that's under that grass, so the idea is even in clear water it's dark under matts so black line will be harder to spot in theory. With punching inTheory the bait is falling right in front of the basses face and the dark color will be easier to pick up. Again all in theory I use braid 70% of the time even in stained water never had a problem
So would a medium fast spinning set up be just as good for all these techniques you mentioned for this baitcasting setup? I have a MH fast baitcasting setup and a M fast spinning setup that I use for everything so in my mind I haven't been able to justify getting a MF baitcasting rig. Am I missing out? Is there another combo you'd suggest to fill in the gap between what I have? I prefer to carry minimal gear so all around combos work better for me.
