I really appreciate your ability to mimic the sounds of the frequencies you're treating. Helps me to begin hearing them. Great work, as always!
I've seen many vocal EQ presentations but this was without one of the best explained using fundamentals to clearly demonstrate benefits but more importantly it was easy to follow and therefore apply for even relatively inexperienced mixers such as myself. Thank you: very much looking forward to trying this on current project
Thanks Martin.
Excellent video!! My favorite bits were you vocally articulating the problem area "sounds". That just hits home and I can certainly relate and understand. Great job.
Heartfelt thank you! I am a musician dealing with the learning curve of Studio One and loving your tutorials. The music is the easy part....
You'll get to the point where the software becomes invisible, and you can go back to mostly focusing on music. 😊 👍
Dear Joe I'm 55 and Studio one is my first DAW ...I'm learning everything from you. I was just thinking about your songs and particularly how' Fighter' has so muchlikability although from your perspactive I'm sure youve moved on to your newer material, anyway I was thinking of the Rolling Stones song Time on my hands and thinking I wonder if they ever thought about fixing the out of time tamboureen. what do you think. do you think we spend too much time critiquing ouselves rather than just moving on to the next big hit. thanks for all the free and wonderful advice my friend. peace be upon us all.....{by the way i know this didn't scan that well. oh well...]
@@zilueta5645 Hi I agree I love studio one, and it's so hard to decide what your own music sounds like but I will be posting soon as I'm just finnishing vocals on a few tunes, Hope you like it and I look forward to hearing your critique. thanks for showing an interest my friend.
Joe, the way you make these videos, i feel like we're close friends or something man. huge props on being an effortlessly excellent instructor
Thanks buddy! 😊
Thank you for your channel. My wife and I release our music to all platforms and I been utilizatizing your technics to upgrade our sound. Salute to you. I'll keep watching and learning.
Very helpful, Joe. Thank you! Coincidentally I'm working on a vocal right now and I'm certain this will help
Spinning the Gold again.👍
This is gold
Super helpful video Joe! I've stopped using the "boost and sweep" Eq move since I heard Warren Huart say "every frequency sounds awful if you boost it 15db!", (although he did say, if you can kinda hear the area where the problem is then yeah do it). I can imagine this great vocal piece after Marc Daniel Nelson has added a lush reverb! Have a nice day Joe!
great Joe nice video no nonsense to the point nice
This is a really good thing to do on every track before you actually start mixing. I did it on my latest song, and when I cut those shitty frequences, the whole song sounded dramatically, though subtly better, without any real mixing done.
I have watched tens of videos just on EQ-ing vocals, this was the most helpful one.
One of the best vocal mixing videos! Exactly what I was searchin for..
Watching your videos makes me realize how little so many other channels actually know. I was listening to someone give advice on how to EQ vocals from a guy who had very muddy audio.
Very nicely explained 👍👏👌
Thanks Joe, excellent as always! Blessings! :)
Man, thank you. Great video.
Thanks!!! ❤
Very helpful!
What a super helpful video Joe thank you! You have a knack of sort of just taking us by the hand and guiding us along so we know what it is we're listening for before we just start cutting a bunch of frequencies and hoping for the best. For the recordings I work on the lead vocalist is a lady with a very powerful higher end voice (think a bit of an opera type voice) so the frequencies I deal with are very different than the ones for you but the principle is the same and what you taught me here will help tremendously. You're awesome thanks!
Loving your whistle explanation :) Works really well to understand though. Thanks for another great video!
This is exactly what I struggle with evert time I record my voice. Thankyou for what you do.
Love ya, Joe, but everything was fine with my vocal tracks until this video pointed out that...well...they're not fine.
You're the man.
So nice! So practical! Love the way you break these down!
really easy to learn
The best !!!😯
Super super straight and useful
Amazing video man thank you so much
All of the youtubers who make videos on mixing and mastering have literally changed my life and alot of them are younger than me lol
its funny how well u can imitate the problem frequency. especially when u whisteled the frequency 😂😂😂 i was blown away by how accurate u were in key
Awesome videos - Thank you Joe. Fun and very insightful.
I’d love to see studio one include at least a barebones de-esser within their fx pack.
And autotune

You're a Legend ❤
I have an acoustic song I'm working on
This will help alot
I'M DEF GONNA USE THESSSSSSSE
Nice video, as always! Thanks!
For the bonus...why not using a hi shelf instead of a bell / parametric?
Joe, you're very good at zeroing in on the proper cuts. But, it would be more demonstrative for those beginners to novices if you could let the problem area you hear play a bit longer to illustrate the frequency(s) you're focusing in on.
Bro love it! I use to do all the old ways from years ago and now just cut here and there and I boost if I want to boost lol. Loving the tips bro!
Joe - great tips. I work best when I apply some basic mixing methods, like these, first, before getting too “creative”.
I figured the last three but the first one was a surprise to me. Hearing you boost and cut it made it obvious but in my RUclips listening environment with my ears, I wouldn't have known that was a problem. In hindsight, the spectrum analyzer is helpful for that, I guess.
Soothe 2 is a "desert island" plugin. It finds the resonant frequencies, and you decide how much to reduce them. (Also makes for a great de-esser.)
For the 1st tip, instead of removing a freq I would use TDR Nova (free) with a threshold to act like a comp and reduce the freq only if needed.
But if it resonates everytime the vocals sings, then regular EQ works just fine.
Thank you
This trick can enhance the pros and fill out the weekend warrior.
Copy main vocal 8 times mono pan 4 left 4 right.
In Studio One click the i and set the delay,
Left 1: 10ms 2: 24ms 3: 10ms 4: 24ms
Right 5: 24ms 6: 10ms 7: 24ms 8: 10ms
And the tune,
Left 1: 3 2: -6 3: 9 4: -12
Right 5: -3 6: 6 7: -9 8: 12
***Note you need to select every Waveform on the track before setting the delay and tune
Thanks man
You can teach people in our community about audio editing on da Vinci Resolve "Fairlight". I applied what I learned to you on my audio editing, but the EQ frequency differs from what you work with.
By the way, I'm a newbie, so I don't know if I do the same thing, haha
nice
In the first tip, these are overtones, they are generated in the singers anatomy and it’s just a build up of overtones. It’s normal and resonates the most in those intense forward vocal placements like in this example. Mongolian throat singers generate these on purpose and can control them separately from the fundamental pitch.
👍
That's why they call it kiloHURTS. That is also a problem dialing in monitors in live sound ❤
Call me childish but "That went from a big but to a normal but" had me in tears 😂
For such cases, it is better to use a dynamic equalizer. Thanks 😊
@3:40 So I have to get Herbert the pervert out of my overtones. This will help me remember 😂
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Sir Wanna Learn something about De-essers and dynamic EQ
i like the smoothness one you use sometimes too. around 400-700 cut makes it sound like a tighter vocal and almost compressed in a way
Cool, nice and easy!
Why did you pronounce 'free' more like 'fee'? Any specific reason?
your voice is soothing...lol
If only there was a HP filter diet to quickly get rid of that”big butt”problem.
I’m sorry… I couldn’t pass on the dad joke😂
after EQing what is the next step you usually do?
Good explanation Joe, but why not use a dynamic eq?
Because I don't own one, and this method works just fine. 😊
I do this in Solo all the time and then listen with all of them
I honestly don't understand the rule of not using Solo...
Actually I saw a video from Kush After Dark talking about this.
Just do what works for you fuck the rules lol
The most important part is that it sounds good!
Can we listen to the original song?
Am I the only one that didn't hear a whistling sound until massively boosted, but did hear it as a harsh flutter in the vocal?
Joe, would you say it’s ok to leave narrow cuts of resonant frequencies for the entire track or it’s best to automate the cuts/is there a plugin that is best for that? Recording in an untreated room I seem to get a lot of different resonant frequencies on different notes, but when I make a lot of cuts it can end up sounding lifeless, it’s just so annoying to automate the cuts lol
No need to automate them, in my experience.
@@HomeStudioCorner thanks joe, love your vids and have learned a lot from them. i appreciate the reply
The song ?
It's called Lies. Haven't released this version yet.
1. grab the knob
2. close your eyes
3. watch him or her(closer, far, upward, downward)
4. you have the eyes of ears. so trust your ears. see the sound.
I wish I can give you two likes
People should be careful not to confuse a ringing filter with a resonance in the vocal. Easy mistake to make if you boost a narrow band and sweep it around without already having identified what you're looking for
👍
Joe who?
That 'free' is a problem from the singer and you're having to fix it - it's because of the modern victimy whiny high pitched little boy brat half whisper singing style that passes for vocals these days....the days of singers actually knowing how to sing notes freely, openly & properly are long gone. now we have melodyne and software to fix whiny vocals :) great vid as always - ty
I think I need new ears.
