purple is the official color of background vocals. yes
I’m having a lot of trouble recording vocals…and this video was very helpful
I learned that my “takes” suck, and the reason my vocal tracks sound like garbage, is because my vocals suck..yeah! Back to voice lessons!
Hey Joe. I'm a silent follower but I must confess that your videos are always informative. God bless you!
I'm mixing background vocals for a track that come in without a lead and this really helped because a lot of the other tutorials assume you have a lead whereas this one doesn't
I use Valhalla Vintage Verb, so I can cut out the low frequencies right from the interface. It's a great idea. You don't need the super low frequencies in reverb.
Nice. I did three parts, each doubled. I mixed the two low tracks at L65 and L45, the middle line at R65 and R45, and the high part at L10 and R10. A little room reverb on the BGV Bus and it sounds like a small chorus arrayed around the listener in a semicircle, in a church.
LOTS of useful hints here, esp. about that reverb de-mudifying!
Joe, you're a blessing, bro.
Thanks Joe. I always send beginners here when they ask me about studio one. You helped me lay the foundation and also now build on that foundation.
Love that you are working in 1/3 octave view in the spectrum analyzer. It makes it easier to see which frequencies are standing out above others. Also makes auditioning good and bad frequencies easier to manage. That's a small but effective trick that I bet not everyone uses when they are mixing.
I always come away with great nuggets from your videos, separate EQ on reverb, great stuff!
Shane
Haha 6:02 that fast forward sound is genius! Your videos are so much fun Joe
😂
I just love how you always reminds me of all the stuff that I already learn at some point and completly forgot about it.
Great vid as always Joe, thank you!
Joe - thank you. You are a genius!
Been watching your stuff for a while, and I have been wondering about backing and harmonies like this for a while, and there aren't many relevant videos out there. Great stuff!
Joe you are the man!
Great video Joe! Thanks for sharing your thought process on BGVs
Joe, the quality of your vocals is so good. Lots of great information here, thanks.
Thanks so much. I have never worked on BGV the way you explained!! Sounds so much fun 🤘🏼 Will definitely going to try one soon!
Good stuff as always!! Thanks much!
That diminished chord was bad-assington! Yeahhhhhh!
I'm new to Studio One, and just wanted to say thanks! Your videos are a huge help.
This is exactly what I was looking for!!! Thanks Joe!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge ❤
This a blessing Joe!
I'm so excited I've come across this video. I've watched three minutes so far and I need to say - we have in common this huge passion for playing with backing vocals! I've been mixing mine intuitively so far but I'm about to learn some useful tips from you and that's what I've been praying for because I know there's lots of room for me to improve.
Ok, I finished. It was so great!! I was watching with my mouth open 😄 especially the part where you were adjusting the compression using your ear. Awesome! The same with EQ. I was really surprised with EQ on reverb. I'm not sure what that means but I'll try to figure out (I use a different DAW - Reaper). It might be super helpful because I love reverb but I also struggle with it a lot.
Great stuff Joe! Cheers!
Great video. Youre a good singer Joe. Especially like the parts you come up with for backing vocals
Great presentation. I haven’t done much top down bus processing on background vocals . I want to try this approach more in the future
Thx a lot, Joe! A super goodie from Mr Background Vocal himself. Great stuff.
Great video, Joe! Thanks for sharing!
Sounds awesome Joe 🤙🏾
Excellent! Just what I needed for my project with 4 part BGVs mixing.
Joe this is such a good video tutorial... Sometimes I don't get it right and I struggle with those bg vocals... Great great techniques!!
Great job, Joe - as usual!
Incredible tutorial! Thanks so much!
you're like the khan academy of music thank you so much absolute lifesaver. and i'm looking forward to the other background vocals video!! thank you again :D
So helpful it hurt. Will be watching again and again...
This is the Joe I know and love :)
Great walk through, very organized and easy to follow. This was actually really interesting with how much sir you kept. I've been experimenting with rolling if my highs above 4k to ensure my transients aren't clashing with the main vocal.
I know you're a lot more flexible on it, but dang I can't even imagine allowing my lows to drive my compressor knowing they'll all be cut anyways. Lows have so much dynamics, I want my compressor laser focused on delivery smooth, even clarity.
like for the diminish chord Alone.... Nice Joe...
That was noice.
Excellent, thank you!!
New producer in the making I love this using studio one 4 musician
I have learned a lot from this video!!
Great video and singer too! Keep em coming! (Hello from Liverpool UK)
Thank you, Joe. I want to record some chords with voices to experiment in a mainly instrumental song. I will try the advices of your video there.
Congrats from France. So interesting to watch your videos. Great job. I want more!! Thanks!
Fantastic Joe !! Thanks so much for this tutorial:-)
This is one of the best videos that clearly explain how to use compression and EQ, and the demonstration is done just excellently. This is that type of video worth paying for.. and getting it here on RUclips just makes it all that worth. Thank you for this tit-bits.. they are excellently explained.
👍
Thank you!
Thanks Joe
Hey guys! Joe's using a plate reverb! Never see him do that!
Kidding! I love these videos. Learned more from your channel than in my recording degree.
AWESOME! TYVM
Sooo good! ❤️👍🙂
Awesome vocals
God, I love Queen! Nice vid, Joseph!
TYVM Joe
Nice tute great vocals Joe.
Genial! Gracias!
Joe is the FYRE
Very helpful, ta fella.
Thanks my idol... God bless u
You are a beautiful singer...
Great videos
man, i love your videos so much
Aw thanks!
Hi Joe..always love your video..help me a lot.. Studio one user from Malaysia..Greeting..
Very informative Joe, and thanks. Apart from all the great processing info, I thought the diminished BGV were a clever idea and you should highlight those in a future video -- it makes for an interesting counterpoint (if that's the right use of the term) to the main vocal.
Joe your songs are nice doc
Bloody helpful man. Keep up the great work. Also would you have something like this for gritty male vocals?
manh i love its
Dope. Preciate you.
Riiiiight back atcha
Bro thank you! Can you do a videos on where to set the preamp for tracking bg vocals vs lead vocals!
Joe, you a bad dude.
Hey joe not sure if you have done one before but I was wanting to know how you have the studio live manipulated to use outboard gear
Would this same approach be useful on rock / pop vocals as well? Or would you take a different approach?
Very informative. The only thing better would be hearing all these techniques and sound bites in the room as opposed to the compressed RUclips variety. In this case, though, I really could hear legitimate differences in before and after. Nice
Hey Joe 👋,,,,Thanks for all the amazing videos with lots of important information...I have one question, I have just changed my daw from logic to studio one 5.2...but there is a problem where my sustain and wheel pitch bender is not working any suggestions...thanks...
Hey Joe, Chris Daughtry called.... ;) Thanks for the videos!
Now, I need to know how to sing harmonies like that :)
Definitely pitch correct everything. I have the Melodyne Editor (second highest level) and no matter how well you think you sang it, there are always notes out of tune. Since I have the 'editor' version, I also use it on my guitars. It does a great job finding the notes & you can pitch correct those as well.
Bill Graper or, you know, you could just sing and play in tune 🤔
Or just don't, and instead embrace the sound of a human vs the sound of a robot.
@@BillGraper is melodyne essential ok??
@@officialWWM My guitar doesn't stay in tune, at least not perfectly. Singing in tune 100% is difficult. Everyone uses pitch correction today. All producers use it, whether they need it or not.
This just made me subscribe i just switched to studio one and i need as many pointers as possible
Welcome!
i would love to hear your version of the Studio One Sessions group, newest contest song.
Joeeeeeeeeeeee Those Leave me alone Backrounds
I have studio 1 4 whats the best professional studio 1 to get?
Hey Joe, I've been searching for videos on Acapella mixing for like forever and doesn't seem to find effective ones, can you please make a video on that since you got experience on that. Would be Soo helpful
One of the best and simple Background Vocals Mixing Tutorials... Thank you Brother
Thanks for watching!
❤
How do i keep the original pan of the track trought the bus?
shit sounds great!!!
can you do one on how to do a glitch vocal effect? a lot of pop tracks use this. never hurts to ask :)
When this song is gonna be out and heard
Link please
Dude, I would kill to have a voice like yours! Really helpful tips here as usual, thank you. By the way, regarding the doubled tracks, are they duplicates or different takes (then panned hard left and right)? Thank you.
Doubles should ALWAYS be different takes.
Cool, thanks.
Sometimes I have this problem that the bgv's sound good in stereo, but too soft when played in mono (with a bluetooth speaker e.g.), probably something with phasing issues? I panned them pretty much the same way you did in this video. Do you have any tips for that? So that the bgv's are just as present in mono as in stereo. Would love to hear from you!
Where can i hear this song?
Lol @ your "fast forward" sound you made DIY style
Hey Joe, do you use any tool to make the background vocals aligned like that or does the performance just have to be so near perfect for it to sound this good?
A great performance is paramount.
i think its al about performance
Why should we not have a EQ in the beginning of the FX plate reverb? Is it best after?
Sometimes EQ's can generate low frequencies even if you roll them off before. After makes more sense to me.
The Bgv sounds like Yes.
Hi Joe...i want to do a complete course for cubase... do u provide such kind of any courses... i want to learn production arrangement n all...
I'm biased, but I recommend my courses. I have customers who use every DAW out there. You don't need to have the same DAW as the course to get the most value.
@@HomeStudioCorner thanks for reply... so which course of yours i should opt ?
Purple is the official color of bass little brother. HA!
My bass is always purple as well LOL.
It's okay to be wrong. 😊
@@HomeStudioCorner So, what does your brother-in-law say the color of bass is? No matter, I love the info you share Joe.
I always use purple for bass too but I tried purple for my vocal backing tracks and they immediately sounded better - who'd have thunk it!
I'd love to see a tutorial on mixing BGVs in live shows and probably using the Universal control instead
I'm not your guy for that. I'm a studio dude.
Hopefully these tips helps my headache with mixing vocals haha
