The vast majority of music listeners do not comprehend the contribution of Tony Maserati and how many long days he works without much recognition. Tony has a thankless job but his pride in his work keeps him motivated and employed.
@zachary ustinovich The other way around. You take out the "esses" from the BG vox (to some extend). This has the effect of letting the BG seem further away from you and thus the lead seems more upfront. BTW don't confuse "esses" with breathiness. It's not the same thing ;).
This is why the D.A.W. doesn't matter. You must know what things are and what they do so you know how to use them regardless of the D.A.W. He literally did something with a vocal that we weren't evem thinking about and created a new vocal and an effect "at the same damn time!" 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Beautiful work.
I think ProTools forces you to see all plugins in the plugin list, even the ones that are demo / trial ones, that may have come along with the ones you've bought or something. At least that's the case in my school. It's a total pain in the ass to try to find something that actually works (that they own a license to).
You guys need to get Serban Ghenea on here, the guy who mixed pretty much all the big radio pop records. The mix on the new Ariana Grande song is very nice!
Serban will not and should not ever be interviewed. What he does is insane and must be witchcraft. He should keep his methods secret and keep them forever!!!! Hell, the only thing we know about him is he uses Metric Halo Channelstrip.
Yeah that's some surgical level thinking you can recognize even at more a novice level... Tony M you surely make decisions with focus and purpose, but the years of experience stands out even more in your foresight.... what a great rounding off of vocal frequencies (HPF really did help produce that breathy layer that wasn't intelligible the same before)... Not my kind of music, but it's amazing how my ear wanted to listen to the boundaries you set once you were onto the next step... sweet stuff!
That studio looks like a cross between a rich Italian home and "The Law Offices of Maserati & Maserati". Beautiful, nevertheless. I know I would love to have an opportunity to see the place myself someday! And this mix is FIRE! The song is SO catchy!!!
We just started our label last year but I've been mixing my own backgrounds and doing it for other artists for years. It's different with every artists voice but panning, eq, efx and timing is everything. If you've ever heard an A cappella of Michael Jackson's backgrounds it will make you work harder. LOL
I'm here like: "Tony. Hey Tony. You didn't copy that De-esser from the left track. You forgot the Alt-key. Hey. Tony. The left one doesn't have that de-esser. Alt-drag."
Yeah, I heard that - but what he's doing is de-essing the Left and the Right double. When he's satisfied he drags the de-esser from the Left track to some other Stereo double/harmony, which I'm pretty sure was a mistake. The only "s" you'd want is the Lead in the center, for certain not just one on the left.
I think one of the big problems today is artists use the best chorus and copy and paste it to all choruses. The shelf life of modern music is short because it is the flaws and differences that make things interesting.
Go on KVR or any of the other big audio gear forums, you’ll hear a bunch of people talking down on Waves plugins. “They’re all crap!!” Watch any professional mixer, commanding well over 10 grand a mix, and what do you see?? Don’t waste your time chasing plugins. Learn the tools you have, and as long as you’ve got the tools to do these tasks (EQ, tuning software, various comps, de-esser, stereo pan knobs) and ears: you’ve got what you need :)
I'm a little confused ... I see the lead vocal is recorded in mono and the background vocals are stereo. Is stereo always the way to go when recording background vocals?
I'm sure Tony is a very talented man and probably a nice guy, but it is evident from his expressions throughout this video that he is dying for a challenge. The endless coo-voiced singers and snaps-as-beats sound has got to be a real drag to sit through day after day, year after year. The man worked on Bowie's Black Tie, White Noise, for heaven's sake. Tony, please, pass on the big check for the next project and work on something you'll love. The soundtracks to entitlement are beating you down.
i have something that has been troubling me for years now, anytime iam mixing a song,i reduce individual tracks down to -10 db den imix my vocals with the c4 compressor, how will i avoid distortion during mastering @mix with the masters

"I may have gone too far but we're just getting started" ; words you'll probably only hear in the creative industry...
Or in an episode of Dexter
DREW lmao. True
Standup comedy comes to mind.
I actually laughed when he said that
I was going to write exactly this if no one else had LOL
Man that breathy double really makes it
"Makes it"?? LOL
Singer Sade would record breathe tracks

You know he doesn't work for free right...
Love when mix engineers have a slow pace and a thoughtful process. Great video 👨🏽🌾
Wow the effect the bv de-essing had on the lead vocal was instantly noticeable, great tip!

it's just psychoacoustics bro
@@DanielGarrickMusic if you take too much of the s out, then you'll end up with a very unnatural sounding lisp.
I really enjoyed that part at 7:15 where it's just quiet. Feels like you're sitting next to him in a chair and watching him doing his daily work.

Words to live by
4:38 - Tony will teach you how to tame the temptation of cheating on your Girls!
LOL =D

Maybe my ear can’t discern if an ass is out of time but my eye sure can
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Trust me! So much cherishable information within this 9 min video. There is nothing to left out
In few minutes, he made it sound better!
We have many things to learn from that man!
"we really don't need more than one ass" (Maserati, Tony)
Lucas Parisi hahahaha very funny
Does the Hook L and R beeing copied or seperate recorded? They look really the same but I don't think they just copied?
@@youngwhitefresh9220 I was just asking myself the same question ! Hope we'll get an answer !
@@lermitenyour8940 I think they are not. I've looked closer, they recorded twice for shure. But they in stereo there.
@@youngwhitefresh9220 Thank you !
I think it's great that he used basic/free plugins for this considering everything he has at his fingertips.
He just advertises the Waves company, obviously…
One of my favourite mixers!
One of the best engineers in the world. We love you Tony!
Can we get a master class on how to navigate through THAT many plugins?
That has been recorded well
Baraka cleaned very well and on time too!
Tony: Talks about polishing vocals.
Me: Looks at those massive plugins list and wonder, how many of those were torrented.
Zero.

@@JiihaaS They dont have like a favorites category? i Use live and its a pain unless you add your plugins in a fav folder
I don't think one of the best engineers in the world in a pro studio is going close to bootleg plugins - Tony even has his own Waves Plugins ..
@@EsaShaheed Nope. That's why I'm back on Cubase and not Pro Tools. You can't rearrange your plugins. Also you can't edit the keyboard shortcuts.
i feel good about myself when he says some things i already figured out from experience

Inside voice: “delete”
Awesome to see how Mr. Maserati works with Background vocals. Thanks for sharing Tony. =)

children alibs behind her chorus would have made this a billboards top 40 hit. nice mix TONY you really gave life to the song.
rocking the classic Waves, love it...
I'd like to see a session with a big "Journey" style chorus....
The rough vocals looks like my mine after 1 h of mixing. Oh my.

Thanks for this. Actually really applicable to metal background vox.
This man really spred some charisma
The voices reminded me of Lorde at some point, I believe she does that in her songs
This looks like it was shot at La Fabrique in the south of France. Had the pleasure of recording there
Jordan Pass really? That studio is the stuff of dreams.

True. Mj back up vocals are so nice. But i noticed he doesent overuse it only for chorus i think.
Yes and also broke every rule in the game, he was stomping, moving his body, snapping through out most of his songs! A true king!
"I don't think I need a third double,".... until Wendy's drive thru
King maserati
He’s more of a sculptor than a mixer. It always makes more sense to go off feeling than numbers and ratios
Thank you for the breath take edit! Imma use that on my lead whisper
K Flay! Finally an album I know during a masterclass
I was doing lead vocals only without backup singing and I did the classic choir from Ez Voice because I love singing.
