Okay, as far as the audio for the next video goes that I mention here: If nobody has any violent objections or better ideas within the next couple of days, I'm going to just dump that audio on here as well. When and if I continue the series, I'll take the audio down once the video has been made. Chances are the audio will be very different once I do that, since the audio itself is a rough draft. I clean my scripts up as part of the video editing process, rerecording things as I think they sound better/add to my points.
if you want, and if OptimisticDuelist would like, we three can start a podcast on homestuck. as often as we want, whenever we want, over discord and twitch or something. idk. just an idea
If you and him want to do it, that's great, and I'd be happy to be a guest here and there, but I don't think I have enough of an ongoing (that is, day to day) interest in Homestuck that I'd be a good member. I'm sure Taz would be interested though!
Tex Talks, I asked about a week ago about if I could edit that video of yours and you said to ask again later after you'd checked the audio. I don't know any other way to contact you so I'll just do it here. Are you just gonna put it up here instead?
The best thing about Homestuck to me is that the more you study it, the better the experience gets. Parts i overlooked or shook my head to seem much more thought out and clever when a thoughtful mind explains them.
Aaaaaaaa my dude I was doing backflips out of excitement when I heard you put a video out and now I notice you're shouting out to me in the description? Jegus, I don't even know what to say, this is like combined birthday and christmas. I can't wait to listen to this but before I do that, I just wanna say thanks a ton for everything! Don't forget I wouldn't be doing this if you hadn't inspired me in the first place, as I'm sure you will continue to do.
Don't get too excited, this is just the summary video I said I recorded a bunch of months ago. But of course man you're the big shot now. Have you seeeeen your subscriber count?
5 years late but just wanna add this. i feel HEART and MIND don't represent the fans themself, but rather represent the things that fans interact with; heart is the characters we can interact with while mind is the very logic the story is based on. so, together they kinda represent genre
Love both you guys' videos sooo much. It really scratches the homestuck itch while we're all waiting for the Hiveswap sequel. Keep up the fantastic work!
I really loved your theory about the aspects as metanarrative elements, and tried to codify my own theories for each about that. In particular we differ a bit on hope/rage, but perhaps only slightly. I think of that pair as dealing with audience understanding of the story. When the audience sees Eridan shoot a white science blast we don't really question it, despite Kanaya pretty heavily implying it's just a white stick - the framing of the white stick as a wand makes the audience believe it is a wand. Near the end AH claims all the cyber enhancements he gave spades slick were fake, and yet when seen from Jake's perspective they work as *the audience would expect them to*. You see a character drawn like spades slick, you assume powerful cyborg. Big white dragonball z auras can stop a space player with omnipresence, because you'd believe a big aura to symbolize power. Rage on the other hand makes the reader confused and frustrated. Expected explanations are withheld, logical courses are subverted. So in other words, hope/rage are about the suspension of disbelief/lack thereof, in a sense. These concepts kind of go hand in hand with plot coherence/contrivance, but that's my take.
I just had the epiphany that blood is world building. The first time we meet karkat echoes everyone else at that point, giving us enough dramatic irony to learn about alternia and the trolls at the same time. Blood makes the world feel rich and full of life. It is the lore behind the plot.
Man, I like your videos; not just for homestuck but for your input and eloquence. Don't sweat about not doing homestuck vids, you'll build an audience through being you. Homestuck is just one facet for that.
I think the best way to describe maid players is that they serve their aspect. They don't get to enjoy the powers and hate their role to some degree. (idk about Jane but I know Aradia and Porrim hated their aspects; Aradia because she gave up herself as a character to the story so she can keep the timelines in check in the background and Porrim because she would've been forced to breed and nurture which she adamantly refused to do since that's what jade bloods are forced to do.) Maids also seem to be the most degraded class in meta with Aradia being written off as a creepy dead girl, Porrim the sexy annoying feminist, and Jade the spoiled heiress.
Since for some reason I decided to just look at the video while you talked instead of leaving it playing in the background, I feel like I noticed something interesting. The aspect duos that are 90º degrees apart from each other seem to have a stronger connection: -Time/Space and Blood/Breath are the basics of any story, the world and the setting, the plot progression and character interaction. Both Time and Breath seem to be linked to the pace of the story, and in-universe, John's retcon powers are compared and contrasted with time travel. Space and Blood seem to be both linked more to the Now, the fleshing out of the work, be it the characters and their interactions, or that of the world they're in. -Light/Void and Hope/Rage are related to understanding, the former pair relating to how available information is, and the latter to how consistence it turns out to be. Light and Hope both let the reader learn more about either the character who has the spotlight, or about actions/events/mechanisms that form the story. Meanwhile, Rage and Void have to do with the unknowable and the illogical, the parts of the story a reader might never get to enjoy. -Heart/Mind and Doom/Life relate to the character's path, be it of looking inward and discovering themselves, looking outwards and discovering their path, living a positive or negative experience (according to the interpretation present in this video) or how much agency they even have to follow those same paths mentioned before (in optimisticDuelist's version of it). Like was said in the video, Mind and Doom seem to be linked through doomed timelines, all the lost ways the alpha timeline (or in a broader sense, the story) could have gone. In this way, each duo works like an axis on a coordinate system, does the story focus more on how its setting relates to the characters within it, or will it be a progression through the world they inhabit. Will the contrivances of the story be its focus, or will it be the mystery surrounding its logical nexus? These same questions might also be asked about the Heart/Mind-Doom/Life quadrants, but I don't have their connection that fleshed out at the moment. Looking at these three coordinate maps, we can better understand the how the world, its truths and the characters within are being explored at any point in the story. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this notion, seeing as it wouldn't be unthinkable that the official aspect wheel would be positioned in this way other than to have a pleasant rainbow look to it. (The closest connection I can find between Heart and Life as of the posting of this comment is how by understanding itself, a character would be better equipped to take power over their life, to live it better and have more agency, and in a more in-universe example, Dirk seems to have an incredible amount of agency through all the splinters he has going around, though thanks to this not being his aspect, or having been done with this purpose, it eventually leaves him unhappy with having to face himself in such an external and in-your-face fashion) Thank you very much to everyone who somehow read all the way through this. These videos excite me a lot and if I can try and add anything to the aspect system's understanding, I will do my best to share my thoughts. Have a wonderful day.
I think another way to describe breath and blood is “the story when the characters are mainly reacting to events happening to them” vs. “the story when the characters are mainly motivated by their own thoughts and feelings about themselves and others” basically, external motivation vs. internal motivation. the machinations of the story vs. the interiority of the characters. this fits with John and Karkat when you consider the way they function as the main characters of their respective parts, and the leaders of their respective groups. John, for all intents and purposes, is totally unconcerned with being the leader... and I think this is partially because he resists the notion of planning beyond a moment-to-moment response to external stimuli. he is very eager to help in dire situations, but doesn’t really know enough to anticipate anything the way a lot of other characters do... he mostly relies on others to make their own plans and relay them to him. we see Rose, Dave, and Jade do this for him at various points throughout the story. he is also easily pushed and led by various influencers, most notably our thief of the spotlight... and who better to draw her in than the highly suggestible main character himself? I think it’s also telling that John got way more stir crazy than anyone else during the three year journey between sessions... he had no situation to react to, and was constantly hoping for the dream bubbles to present him with something interesting. and even once he got his retcon powers, he needed Terezi to tell him what to do with them. don’t get me wrong here, John isn’t useless on his own... but the way that he forms strong relationships is by letting himself be guided and directed. which is why he made a great client player, but had to be badgered into connecting with Jade, after which someone else immediately took over acting as her server player. meanwhile, Karkat is certain that he should be the leader... it’s one of the first things we learned about him. he has _so_ many strong opinions, and he’ll direct them somewhere even if he’s not sure why. this is a contributing factor to why he’s always angry... something is always wrong, and his first instinct is to hold people accountable for whatever they’re doing. and that may sound harsh, but it does keep people asking themselves what more they could do instead of just giving up, and Karkat himself is not exempt from scrutiny. I think that’s the main reason why Karkat is so lovable, and Kankri is so insufferable... you can see Karkat engaging in self critique, sometimes even to the point of taking things too far and dipping into self loathing, while Kankri only seems to criticize others, never himself. but focusing on just Karkat for a moment... this is also why Karkat’s anger reads as frustration, not rage. he wants to be constructive rather than destructive. he wants the individuals around him to be better than they’re being. he’s willing to engage with their flaws as flaws, and somehow he’s still the only troll out of all 12 of them that can freely associate with anyone in the group without fear, or true mirth-laden conflict. he’s combative, but not cruel... he recognizes that there’s a line, and he never crosses it. he even asks Sollux in their earliest conversation, after the two trade scathing remarks at length, if the two of them are still friends... and Sollux says that Karkat asks this every time, and of course they’re still friends. and for another couple of nice supporting tidbits, consider how he diffused the whole Gamzee situation on the meteor, even going so far as to convince Kanaya not to chainsaw Gamzee to death. and consider how his main strength is giving people relationship advice. and consider how he set out to mercilessly troll these four human kids and almost immediately made friends with them by total accident. he’s also the reason why Jack Noir was on their side in the troll session, and basically what I’m saying here is that he relentlessly confronts people until they have no choice but to get to know each other. Karkat is ridiculous and I love him.
oh my god heart being fan interpretation is. so so perfect for dirk being the writer of hs2 -- the story is written by fans, so of COURSE the aspect of the author would be heart, since the entire story is built upon fan interpretation
(quick warning as i’m writing this i realize my post may come across as harsh and or overly critical. i’m too lazy to edit it even tho it’s super short but this is just meant in the spirit of discussion) i think personally i prefer an interpretation of life as not only a certain form of character agency but maybe more specifically character growth, where doom takes the role of the struggle or obstructions that motivates this growth. i think the trickster arc especially feeds into this-jane was given the lollipop juju which force solved all the alpha’s problems, with no cost or challenge that actually motivated any change. hussie as an insert later chastises caliborn for trying to force this growth on people (mainly cuz he as the lord of time wanted things to move along already) without any struggle or sacrifice. but the other issue with the juju solution to the alpha’s issues might tie back to the question of agency: their forced character growth didn’t come from their own agency, and couldn’t have worked jane’s own challenge or dilemma was the repressive nature of her household and beyond: her well meaning over protective father and the malicious condesce herself both limited jane. ultimately, jane may have needed to grow by making a life of her own. (meenah as the thief of life, attempted to force growth on her fellow player, damara) i also find doom as simply a low point somewhat dissatisfying. doom throughout the story is concern the narrative consequences or costs of taking actions. As sollux has two sides, so does doom. John, for the cost of jade’s isolation and the deaths of his, roxy’s and davesprites other selves, was able to rewrite the entire story.
Too drunk to type out a thought out response to this, but I really like both your points here! As far as I can remember (and it's been a while at this point) I don't I had really considered the ridiculous lolipop segment in the way that you're mentioning. I think these are valid points!
I'm just writing notes to make sure i got this because this stuffs interesting Breath & Blood: external, worldly conflict vs. internal, interpersonal conflict A story based around Breath would be sort of like an overly-simplistic action story. There's a goal to reach, and there's hurdles to reaching it that the main character must overcome. A story based around Blood would make the emotional tension the driving force of almost every interaction. The story is driven entirely by character interactions rather than overcoming external hurdles. It would be the difference between a shounen action story vs. a shakespearian tragedy. Hope & Rage: setup and coherence vs. asspulls and contrivance Mind & Heart: speculation vs. interpretation Space & Time: setting vs. pacing Void & Light: irrelevance vs. relevance Doom & Life: No agency over your outcome vs. agency over your life I think Doom would represent having only external conflicts which you have no control over. Like a post-apocalyptic story, there is only misery ahead of you and the best you can do is to just let it all happen and hope you don't die. Life would then represent having external conflicts, and exerting your control over them anyways. In the post-apocalypse, this would mean living in a dead world and breathing life into it; replanting the earth. Doom and life are the distinction between a tragic, but predictable death vs. a Hopeful end for a character, reclaiming their footing in the story.
Doom and Void are probably my favorite aspects to think about. Void, because it's so hard to grasp and hard to think about. Doom because it feels like a much underexplored aspect within the story. I myself am a maid of light uwu
Welcome back Tex-kun. Don't know if I can write 7 paragraph long responses to a video about a gay bug webcomic in the year of our lord 2018, but I appreciate and enjoy your perspective.
I allways thought the heart and mind aspect have to do with why people read a story, heart has to do with being immersed and dedicated to the characters and what happens to them where as mind is reading to discover lore or the over all story
It is a real pleasure to hear you talking about Homestuck again! We need more constructive discussions about the premises of this comic; otherwise it will be soon disregarded as an odd internet quirk and fall into oblivion. OptimisticDuelist's line of analysis overshadowed other interpretations; your voice brings back some diversity. I would really enjoy podcast with your participation, too.
Actually, taking this into account, everything gamzee does makes perfect sense. As a Bard of Rage he allows his plot irrelevance to be destroyed. He starts out as completely unimportant, a silly footnote in the adventures of the real protagonists. But as time moves on that irrevivance gets further eroded until it could be argued that he has contrived the entirety of homestuck's plot out of fucking nothing. Honestly, the more I learn about Homestuck character's significance to paradox space, the more the title of god fits each and every one of them, it seems that every character is in some way entirely responsible for creating the very circumstances and events of their personal story as well as the stories of everyone that exists and even those that don't.
Don't feel pressured to stick to one subject matter on your channel. Your homestuck videos are very thorough and interesting which really made me view homestuck with a whole new perspective. Please consider making videos about other subject matters you are passionate about; I would love to hear more of your opinions/ analyses on any other of your interests as well!
Holy cow I had this train of thoughts a while back and I got two basically the exact same conclusions you drew. though life and doom are character proggresion and stagnation. Trickster mode is basically a character development ex machina with all of their 'PERSONAL PROBLEMS SOLVED'
man, I don't even care what you talk about, I just love hearing you talk. it's like, the opposite of soothing, but in a good way. fun to listen to rather than relaxing. so I'm not going anywhere
I'm gonna say the below to see if I'm understanding exactly what you've been saying here: I think a way to describe the complementary idea is to use Magic and Science. From one angle, they represent polar opposite existences and ideas, but from another they're just different understandings of the same thing, they're not direct opposites. Also, magic is both proven to exist and disproven multiple times throughout the comic, as if both can technically coexist. If Homestuck is a world composed of ideas like your and optimisticDuelist's videos have been saying than just like how opposing beliefs and ideas can both coexist in our world.
Formatting: [Mobile sorry] I occasionally come back to your Homestuck content, and I just adore how passively effusive you are about the minutiae of this story. In Homestuck^2 Dirk says that what the audience is here for is systems and not characters having lengthy diatribes about their feelings, and I agreed so much that I was delighted. When you opened the series with an explanation of computer science I was like “fuckin finally someone gets it”. I always feel inclined to go through your entire discography, but yeah there’s the “low points” of my life that I need to prioritize. Idk man, just a big fan of your content, and I’m gonna try to go through it more on some things that don’t interest me to see if you can alit a similar fire
when it comes to life and doom, I think the agency part of it comes from the idea of rules. yes, life and doom relate to creation and destruction, and that can relate to positivity and negativity, but I think it’s more than that. the quantum/mathematical connection you observed with doom is mirrored by life’s connection to biology and organic growth. they’re two different ways to relate to systems. in terms of timelines, life would be the forward movement of the alpha timeline. doom would be the way reality thwarts your attempts to change it. basically, a doomed timeline is a “what if” scenario that you ask paradox space, and paradox space says “no”. the alpha timeline is only the events that paradox space agrees to let you keep, which then become the springboard for more events to occur. in other words, life is the rampant propogation of a system... it’s what the system is made of, and how it perpetuates itself. doom is a way to function within the existing system. it is recognizing the restriction that rules represent, and figuring out how function within that. to relate this to a story, when you write, you start with a blank page. as soon as you start writing, that’s when the story starts to grow. the more words you put down, the more story there is. in this way, life is purely about expansion. however, the more things you establish about the story, the less you can do. and what I mean by this is, your story has to have an internal logic. when Andrew Hussie told us about the alchemy system, he showed us how it worked, and we accepted that. but the alchemy system is only interesting if there are some things you can do with it, and some things you can’t. if you decide that anyone can break those rules on a whim, then the process ceases to matter because absurdity has shown that it can trump logic, so there’s no more reason to think. and there’s no reason to care about outcomes because there’s nothing restricting you from bullshitting your way to the resolution of any problem. I feel like people associate life with resilience, and doom with resignation, but life can also be about insustainable output, and doom can also be about ingenuity and problem solving. this is supported by some of the themes present in the interests of our life and doom players. the Captors seem to have ties with computers and coding, which is all about working within restrictive rules in order to produce a desired outcome. meanwhile Jane has a connection to food, (baking specifically), and food is the raw material one puts into themselves in order to produce energy. I think the most basic way that I would describe life and doom is: being told that you can’t do something vs. being told that you can do something. in writing, I might identify this as the inspiration to write more (first draft) vs. maintaining consistency with where the story has been (editing). and how you react to either of those statements really depends on who you are. being told that you can’t do something might make you feel a defiant will to try anyway and make the best of what you are able to do... or it could completely discourage you. and being told that you can do something might inspire you to reach for lofty goals that seem unobtainable... or it could prod you into constantly expending a lot of energy indiscriminately on all sorts of endeavors until you are spread thin or worn out.
Actually, I think it makes a lot of sense for Doom and Life to be Agency. As Fuchsia bloods have the MOST agency of all alternia, and Gold bloods have the LEAST, as they become BATTERIES for imperial ships. We have to remember that Alternia was basically constructed for the explicit purpose of distilling the aspects down to their purest forms, and manifesting into 12 trolls of their aspect.
This is such a cool way to look at all the aspects, I think you nailed it! Homestuck is very much a story about stories and how they're told (just look at how much it plays with formats and mediums throughout) so it makes sense for the fibers of its universe (the aspects) to literally be the elements that make up a story as well.
Oh shit,, seeing this threw me back to the day I discovered your last video on the topic and I never thought I'd be able to see another part come up but I'm so excited! You are so detailed and eloquent and bring a lot of viewpoints to the table that made understanding Homestuck a very unique and fun experience.
When you realize you're friend is a light player and you're a void player, and more people come over to the group because of your light player friend, even though you started the group... 😑
Thank u so much for making this I have many projects I want to make but a homestuck AU is super important to me I want to get back to acts 1-5 it was a magical time. I love AHs world it is so rich to just draw inspiration and your own AU for and we needed more fans like u. I mean it Man U went on to do some amazing things and are a incredible speaker & writer/theologist u really are ahead of our times so thanks for putting ur brain to good use cuz this stuff right here is the meat and candy for AU writers but very little stuff like this is made or documented on in video form gotta go do a lotta tumblr & wiki lurking for that
There r so many little cool similarities & duelites in the class & aspects system I’m glad u where able to find hope is to rage as life is to doom and so on not many people see that where u can have some very cool strifes & conflicts/altercations in character dynamics through them
I know it's been years but this series has been incredible to watch and listen to! I would love to see a continuation, but I absolutely understand if that's no longer something you're interested in ^^
Okay, my theory lies on roles of the elements (aspect pairs). Each pairing ends up serving the same role in the narrative as a whole based on the elements. For example, my element of night (light & void) ultimately have the role of prop management. Nightbound players have the role of getting things where they need to be. Regardless of how relevant they are, night players ultimately perform a magic act to get people/objects into their proper place. Even though Vriska did defeat LE and taking the spotlight, all she did was bring the macguffin to the right spot.
And yes this theory further goes into the elements of destiny (breathe and blood), fate (life and doom), sky (space and time), strife (hope and rage), and spirit (mind and heart). If anyone is still watching or interested in this theory in this day and age, I'm willing to discuss.
it kind of feels like hope could in a sense be the suspension of disbelief. we suspend our disbelief about the sylladex and strife specibus because Story, but then Gamzee goes and does something that makes us question the sylladex because it's one thing to poke at the cards but it's another thing to just bypass the system you're supposed to work with and be confounded by. meanwhile Jake suspends disbelief on anything and pretty much everything and Eridan [a destroyer class] denies or "disbelieves" the force of magic into an over-advanced science. heck Eridan's decision to attack the angel things in his world despite the fact they clearly weren't intended to be targets is another thing. why do we know they aren't supposed to be targets? because they don't drop grist. but why is that the identifier? it feels like Eridan is basically the example to show how some of the weird monster-things on the planets are targets to attack and others aren't, a way of showing that there's good reason for the players to target only the obvious aggressors because we saw it was otherwise a waste of time ...i got rambly sorry if the thought got obfuscated along the way
Aw man! its been some time huh? i missed ur stuff :D dont push urself, especially with school, i feel that! I do have fun with editing! and really love your content! i'd be happy to help and edit the hope video if you'd like. I have some examples on my channel if youre interested, although most of them are animations.
You are doing it great! Love your videos. Do it in your time, when you will. I think you have a great thing going here. I think that even if you just put out the audio, people would be happy with it. I too, would be happy with it.
This has been out for a month or so and I'm only noticing now. I love your perspective of Homestuck, its so intriguing to hear what you think about it. Oh and I have a question, in regards to all your theories, what do you think determines a role/title? (I'm always trying to figure out my own God Tier personally)
On the one hand: you're a genius and I love you and a lot of your ideas sound very correct to me. But also if I disagree with you and get pissy about it will you feel the need to defend yourself enough to keep making videos Also, what would Part 3 be if you ever were to get there?
Really, really interesting stuff. Since you're briefly putting out your most unique thoughts for the sake of having them out there, are you ever going to release your Vriksa-focused Part 3 in a similar cliffnotes format?
Diabeto it changed a bunch of times as I was reading the comic. I think at first it was Dave, then Karkat, then Rose, then Vriska, then maybe John? then Roxy, then everyone. Ya know
What happened to your livestreams? Are you just doing them on Twitch or have you stopped? I personally found it really entertaining especially since your channel is in the unique position of being big enough to have a present audience but not big enough to make talking to you specifically near impossible with the mass of people.
I disagree with your interpretation of mind I think the duality of heart and mind is the juxtaposition of inevitability (the destiny of the story) and possibility (which you already explained with your idea of fan interpretation) We have already established that both dirk and nepeta have the tendency to 'make more out of one thing' guess where dirk splinters while nepeta ships. This allows the reader to see different opportunities, possibilities, and interpretations of the original narrative. Mind on the other hand removes the illusion of possibility. I think terezi is a huge benefactor in the direction of the canon timeline. From the very beginning we know that terezi is representative of the truth as shown by her hobbies and zodiac. Here are some examples of how terezi presents the illusion of possibility/ directs the cannon timeline: her coin flip, the creation of davesprite by killing john, the coin flip with dave on lohac, the coin flip in killing vriska, and the retcon pass words with john. All these have an illusion of choice where the reader understands the concept of alternative timelines and see that there will only ever be one true outcome. Yes her decisions create alternative timelines but for the purpose of fortifying the canon one.
i know this is from 2 years ago, but it doesn't seem like you posted the hope audio. would you mind posting it now or making a download link or something? i would be INCREDIBLY interested in hearing it.
yo breath and blood is kinda a jojo a reference at least from my perspective of it cuz breath represents the hamon users and their strength in conviction whereas blood represents part 3 dios meticulous planning, cunning wit and just overall amazing charisma. hell the human breath player is even named john. this seems kinda dumb in retrospect, seeing as andrew hussie has already clearly contradicted it, but it just kinda makes sense to me i guess.
Yeah I like that! Although personally, I don't think hope would be the only 'ingredient' in that. Maybe it's equal parts hope and rage, with a bit of mind sprinkled in for good measure.
Makes sense. You could easily see it as a balance between the two, with and overabundance of Hope creating ideal situations that would undermine the coherence it aims to bring, while the Rage-inducing contrivances of a story can pull a reader out of a world as much as it can apply duct tape to the faults it may have. Mind is mostly the conduit upon which this balance can change and shift over the course of a story, as well as any other potential au or spin off that might occur given things had gone differently.
Don't let tumblr hear this vid. Hearing "Blood and Breath comming together in part 3" will create countless lewd John/Karkat fanart and in a response to that countless "John "beat the gay ayway" Egbert" memes
Okay, as far as the audio for the next video goes that I mention here:
If nobody has any violent objections or better ideas within the next couple of days, I'm going to just dump that audio on here as well. When and if I continue the series, I'll take the audio down once the video has been made. Chances are the audio will be very different once I do that, since the audio itself is a rough draft. if you want, and if OptimisticDuelist would like, we three can start a podcast on homestuck. as often as we want, whenever we want, over discord and twitch or something. idk. just an idea
If you and him want to do it, that's great, and I'd be happy to be a guest here and there, but I don't think I have enough of an ongoing (that is, day to day) interest in Homestuck that I'd be a good member. I'm sure Taz would be interested though!
Understandable :)
Tex Talks, I asked about a week ago about if I could edit that video of yours and you said to ask again later after you'd checked the audio. I don't know any other way to contact you so I'll just do it here. Are you just gonna put it up here instead?
Hey man. Why don't you add me on steam and we'll talk about it
My name is just tex, my avatar is the dog from ghost trick wearing shades.
Optimisticduelist and textalks both posting a new video on the same day?
Must be a sign of the apocalypse
Extremely likely.
I'm as surprised as you are
Love both you guys' videos sooo much. It really scratches the homestuck itch while we're all waiting for the Hiveswap sequel. Keep up the fantastic work!
There is a meteor coming for my house.
That's just like Life and Doom.
It's been a while, I've missed this channel.
Since for some reason I decided to just look at the video while you talked instead of leaving it playing in the background, I feel like I noticed something interesting. The aspect duos that are 90º degrees apart from each other seem to have a stronger connection:
-Time/Space and Blood/Breath are the basics of any story, the world and the setting, the plot progression and character interaction.
(The closest connection I can find between Heart and Life as of the posting of this comment is how by understanding itself, a character would be better equipped to take power over their life, to live it better and have more agency, and in a more in-universe example, Dirk seems to have an incredible amount of agency through all the splinters he has going around, though thanks to this not being his aspect, or having been done with this purpose, it eventually leaves him unhappy with having to face himself in such an external and in-your-face fashion)
Thank you very much to everyone who somehow read all the way through this. These videos excite me a lot and if I can try and add anything to the aspect system's understanding, I will do my best to share my thoughts. Have a wonderful day.
Holy shit dude I think you're onto something
I think another way to describe breath and blood is “the story when the characters are mainly reacting to events happening to them” vs. “the story when the characters are mainly motivated by their own thoughts and feelings about themselves and others”
basically, external motivation vs. internal motivation. the machinations of the story vs. the interiority of the characters. this fits with John and Karkat when you consider the way they function as the main characters of their respective parts, and the leaders of their respective groups.
Watching this after learning about the Ultimate self is prophetic. Tex called it
oh my god heart being fan interpretation is. so so perfect for dirk being the writer of hs2 -- the story is written by fans, so of COURSE the aspect of the author would be heart, since the entire story is built upon fan interpretation
(quick warning as i’m writing this i realize my post may come across as harsh and or overly critical. i’m too lazy to edit it even tho it’s super short but this is just meant in the spirit of discussion)
i think personally i prefer an interpretation of life as not only a certain form of character agency but maybe more specifically character growth, where doom takes the role of the struggle or obstructions that motivates this growth. i think the trickster arc especially feeds into this-jane was given the lollipop juju which force solved all the alpha’s problems, with no cost or challenge that actually motivated any change. hussie as an insert later chastises caliborn for trying to force this growth on people (mainly cuz he as the lord of time wanted things to move along already) without any struggle or sacrifice. but the other issue with the juju solution to the alpha’s issues might tie back to the question of agency: their forced character growth didn’t come from their own agency, and couldn’t have worked
jane’s own challenge or dilemma was the repressive nature of her household and beyond: her well meaning over protective father and the malicious condesce herself both limited jane. ultimately, jane may have needed to grow by making a life of her own.
(meenah as the thief of life, attempted to force growth on her fellow player, damara)
i also find doom as simply a low point somewhat dissatisfying. doom throughout the story is concern the narrative consequences or costs of taking actions.
I'm just writing notes to make sure i got this because this stuffs interesting
Breath & Blood: external, worldly conflict vs. internal, interpersonal conflict
A story based around Breath would be sort of like an overly-simplistic action story.
Hope & Rage: setup and coherence vs. asspulls and contrivance
Mind & Heart: speculation vs. interpretation
Space & Time: setting vs. pacing
Void & Light: irrelevance vs. relevance
Doom & Life: No agency over your outcome vs. agency over your life
I think Doom would represent having only external conflicts which you have no control over.
AABowser This might be the most interesting "compliment" I've ever gotten, lmao.
-complementary not opposite-
i really like your take on Homestuck, and it blends well with OptimisticDuelist
I'm gonna say the below to see if I'm understanding exactly what you've been saying here:
I think a way to describe the complementary idea is to use Magic and Science.

Not All gold bloods become batteries, and there are two classes below them - brown and rust.
This is super old, but I really hope that you one day upload that hope video, video or no! I would love to see (hear?) it.
I mean it Man U went on to do some amazing things and are a incredible speaker & writer/theologist u really are ahead of our times so thanks for putting ur brain to good use cuz this stuff right here is the meat and candy for AU writers but very little stuff like this is made or documented on in video form gotta go do a lotta tumblr & wiki lurking for that
There r so many little cool similarities & duelites in the class & aspects system I’m glad u where able to find hope is to rage as life is to doom and so on not many people see that where u can have some very cool strifes & conflicts/altercations in character dynamics through them
I'd love to hear videos talking about whatever Math, and/or Games you're playing with!
I know it's been years but this series has been incredible to watch and listen to! I would love to see a continuation, but I absolutely understand if that's no longer something you're interested in ^^
this is my fave aspect theory ngl. the hope/rage thing is v good
still having this be used by classpectors 6 years later
“[Gamzee] coming back to life” I think you mean never dying
Your interpretation of heart is astounding. I love it. Please post whatever you have.
it kind of feels like hope could in a sense be the suspension of disbelief. we suspend our disbelief about the sylladex and strife specibus because Story, but then Gamzee goes and does something that makes us question the sylladex because it's one thing to poke at the cards but it's another thing to just bypass the system you're supposed to work with and be confounded by. meanwhile Jake suspends disbelief on anything and pretty much everything and Eridan [a destroyer class] denies or "disbelieves" the force of magic into an over-advanced science. heck Eridan's decision to attack the angel things in his world despite the fact they clearly weren't intended to be targets is another thing. why do we know they aren't supposed to be targets? because they don't drop grist. but why is that the identifier? it feels like Eridan is basically the example to show how some of the weird monster-things on the planets are targets to attack and others aren't, a way of showing that there's good reason for the players to target only the obvious aggressors because we saw it was otherwise a waste of time
...i got rambly sorry if the thought got obfuscated along the way
It's good to see you again man, it has been so long and you really were missed.
oh god, did you just link dirk's shitty "smut" to Heart
Aw man! its been some time huh? i missed ur stuff :D dont push urself, especially with school, i feel that!
Ah, I'm happy to hear from you again. I hope you're doing well.
I, for one, would just like to see you make more videos, even if they aren't about Homestuck.
... That's not to say I don't want Homestuck videos.
This has been out for a month or so and I'm only noticing now. I love your perspective of Homestuck, its so intriguing to hear what you think about it. Oh and I have a question, in regards to all your theories, what do you think determines a role/title? (I'm always trying to figure out my own God Tier personally)
I really hope you eventually get this going again.
FINALLY someone else who pairs heir/maid
Yeah! Glad to see ya still around
Holy Heck how I've missed you!
so glad you're back!
If Hope is plot coherence then who the fuck moved Jake's frog temple to earth???
On the one hand: you're a genius and I love you and a lot of your ideas sound very correct to me. But also if I disagree with you and get pissy about it will you feel the need to defend yourself enough to keep making videos
Also, what would Part 3 be if you ever were to get there?
Really, really interesting stuff. Since you're briefly putting out your most unique thoughts for the sake of having them out there, are you ever going to release your Vriksa-focused Part 3 in a similar cliffnotes format?
A new video? HYPEEEEE
And in regard to any questions, who is your favorite character in the comic and why? If you have the time of course
Diabeto it changed a bunch of times as I was reading the comic. I think at first it was Dave, then Karkat, then Rose, then Vriska, then maybe John? then Roxy, then everyone. Ya know
I know exactly what your talking about. For me it's settled on Rose but you never know. The runner ups are very close.
oh my lord ive been waiting for so long yesss
I strongly prefer your content to oD
i'm totally fine with unedited audio
22:30 that when you prove your self wrong. I'm just telling you this because I think you miss it.
What happened to your livestreams? Are you just doing them on Twitch or have you stopped? I personally found it really entertaining especially since your channel is in the unique position of being big enough to have a present audience but not big enough to make talking to you specifically near impossible with the mass of people.
I've wondered that myself. Maybe I'll pick it up again soon.
I disagree with your interpretation of mind
I think the duality of heart and mind is the juxtaposition of inevitability (the destiny of the story) and possibility (which you already explained with your idea of fan interpretation)
We have already established that both dirk and nepeta have the tendency to 'make more out of one thing' guess where dirk splinters while nepeta ships.
Yes her decisions create alternative timelines but for the purpose of fortifying the canon one.
do you plan to ever finish this? or will you pull a void move and leave it a mystery?
i know this is from 2 years ago, but it doesn't seem like you posted the hope audio. would you mind posting it now or making a download link or something? i would be INCREDIBLY interested in hearing it.
Please upload the Hope & Rage audio??? I'm a Hope player looking forward to listening. 🙏😝
What's your class? I'm a heir of void myself and love your interpretation of the void aspect
Prince. I have a void tattoo :)
Great stuff
yo breath and blood is kinda a jojo a reference at least from my perspective of it cuz breath represents the hamon users and their strength in conviction whereas blood represents part 3 dios meticulous planning, cunning wit and just overall amazing charisma. hell the human breath player is even named john. this seems kinda dumb in retrospect, seeing as andrew hussie has already clearly contradicted it, but it just kinda makes sense to me i guess.
Well Yes *deletes the jojo reference with the power of hope. But actually no.
Would it be accurate to your definition of Hope that it helps create a "suspension of disbelief" in creating coherency within the story?
Knight of Void here, as a fellow void player what is your class? Mage?
thank you

Don't feel obligated to, but please consider making videos on other topics that you feel passionate about.
Don't let tumblr hear this vid. Hearing "Blood and Breath comming together in part 3" will create countless lewd John/Karkat fanart and in a response to that countless "John "beat the gay ayway" Egbert" memes
YESSSSS
Haha hey
