After someone here mentioned double sided tape, I went ahead and got a roll of 3M Scotch Removable double sided tape commonly used for photos and pictures. It also works like a charm. The tape is wider than the stone and I had to trim it using a Xacto knife but it works almost exactly like your adhesive and for one-third of the cost. 👍🏻 I'm currently trying this system with my Maxamet PM3 and will see if I can put a mirrored edge there. Fingers crossed.
Wow. Just discovered this video and it’s still amazing! Used your method to reprofile my Kershaw Cryo that I messed up on while learning to freehand sharpen on whetstone. Was able to slap on 100 grit aluminum oxide sandpaper and the adhesive worked fantastically. Thank you! Like you said, a little goes a long way, and you do have to wait a while for it to initially get tacky so your sandpaper doesn’t slide around. With the coarser grit, it’s helpful to start slow and use a pull stroke only. After the grit settles in, then it’s easier to go up and down to hog off material faster.
I'm really pleased with this! It works like a charm ruclips.net/user/postUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ Takes less time than my old electric sharpener because it can take more off the knife faster, and then it smooths out nicely with the finer grit polisher. I don't know how long it will last before the grit wears away, but I wouldn't mind having to replace it every once in a while.
I looked high and low for this 3m stuff and couldnt find it I got "Aleenes tack it over and over" its like 4 bucks for a 4 oz bottle and it works perfectly. Its also water soluble so even if you leave it on overnight you can just scrub it off. I literally just did my first 2 knives on this up to 10,000 grit and it works like a freaking charm I didnt even use any of the diamond grits because they seemed inconsistant with the sandpaper grits I got. Six bucks for 120-10000. so ten dollar investment for what would have cost hundreds. Great trick thank you so much!

@@stuartfarish2435 thanks for the update. I think it is one of the better sharpeners on the market. Just wondering are you going to use the adhesive with paper like in the video?

I have seen the PSA backed. The question is.... if you put this on the ceramic side can you take it off easily and reuse or is the ceramic side ruined after? It's actually cheaper with the PSA being you don't need to fork out 20 plus bucks for the adhesive.

@@Sweetknives I really think it will work on the triangle stones as well if a person uses the right grit paper and doesn’t apply too much pressure. Use the weight of the knife for the amount of pressure. The worst part is buying the adhesive. $30.00. Like you say it will last forever.

With the high lapping films above 3000, 6000 grit, or 6 micron you dont need to strop. Its personal preference but I have found with the ultra high lapping films you dont need to strop at all if you have your angle lined up right.
great ideea! i do something similar, i just put electrical duct tape at the egdes. i use the ceramic in combination with metal polishing compound. i only use 2000grit . im pleased with the results, for me is no need to go 1000 and 1500 before 2000 and then ceramic. my knifes are not so high end. just some cheaper Spyderco (prices in Europe are double then USA) and some multitools, Gerber, Skeletool CX, Surge. on Surge i only attempted to sharp with Worksharp. the recurve does not allow it.
Great ideas! Thank you. Have you considered Nano tape in lieu of the 3m compound? No residue. Super sticky. Can even be washed if dirt collects on it over time. Much cheaper too
I was going to buy that sharpener for my swiss army knives but I was worried that the blade would be too small for the clamp, great video even though you are very close to rubbing the clamp there.. how do you find it for sak?
Sandpaper can work for some super steels, especially if you're using high-grit silicon carbide or aluminum oxide sandpaper, but it's generally not ideal. For very hard super steels (like S90V or M390), diamond stones are much more effective and durable, as they can handle the hardness and wear resistance of these steels.
I bought the precision sharp, already knowing that someone would come up with some type or alternate holder to hold different brands of stones, and WS will have their branded other grits eventually. But this is awesome thanks for sharing this. I had never heard of this 3M product. This will save me some money! Lol
Hi. I appreciated this video and went on Amazon prime to purchase the adhesive. They are all sold out. Do you have another option of an adhesive that would work? I really want to give this a try.
I can’t seem to completely work the kinks out of using the belt grinder style work sharp. This is an affordable system as well. Same concept as some super expensive items. I think I’m sold on this product
Absolutely awesome!!!! You my friend should be nominated for the Nobel Peace prize. All the major players are moaning now. A simple device that costs $49.95 just equaled or bested their systems costing easily 10x the price. I'm looking forward to trying this out. A good source for 3m products is rs hughes....that's where I have been buying my 3m diamond lapping films. They are one of if not the largest 3m distributor in the country. You can't go wrong with 3m products!!
@@MrDands glad to help. When you sit down and figure the cost per strip it's like .16 compared to three dollars at most sharpening sites. Such a rip off Only draw back is you need to by a case. But when you think of it....your paying the price for a case by the end of the year if you sharpen many knives....a case will last way over ten years
Shipping is free at RS Hughes but you must purchase over $99 to get the free shipping. That siad the Amazon price with free shipping is probably just as cheap if not cheaper for quantities under $100.
@@dheller777 yes, but looking at the specific product amazon isn't much cheaper than buying from device manufacturer. My point for specifics is if your looking for let's say .1 micron diamond lapping films....most places are charging $3 per strip for a 4x1 format and similar in other formats. You can buy a case of 100 sheets measuring 9x11 for roughly $365 if you do the math that comes down to .16 cents per strip of less if you factor in off cuts. If you sharpen many knives you are easily spending that amount during course of a year. It's just more economical getting from a large distributor whom is selling wholesale. Keep in mind when you buy at Amazon that's pretty much retail, maybe slightly under depending on product.
I do a similar thing with the Work Sharp Combo Knife sharpener. Some tape, superglue and automotive sandpaper. I wanted to put a link to a photo but RUclips is not letting me post links.
Does work sharp make any diamond impregnated stones for this system? Because I have to sharpen s35vn and when I attempted to do it with a similar tooI all I accomplished was dishing out my stone..
I hate click bait. I avoid it and won't go back to a site that uses it. In this case, there might be some truth to knife sharpening companies hating this trick. They would rather sell you the accessories. It looks like he has several videos on using this sharpener.
I know this is an older posted video (I just recently discovered this channel) but I am sure someone can chime in and answer, if you plan on using this method, would you still purchase the Precision Adjust upgraded kit or would that just be a waste of money? Thanks!
I would agree with some of the criticism I have read about the worksharp precision adjust on the lack of #grits. I bought on Amazon a package of 5 sheets of 10 grits ranging from 240 to 3000 for 15CDN$. I make 14 strips that fit the precision adjust ceramic stone with each sheet. So 70 strips for each grit. The adhesive works just like what you see in the video… almost endless stick & replace. So absolutely go for it. On top of it The bundle of sheets I bought are waterproof. With these I can do the back and forth movement that is not recommended in the video without detroying my paper strips.
This is brilliant. You just sold this system to me.

Fantastic idea, way to use the knoggin. I’m in and thanks.
Great ideas! Thank you. Have you considered Nano tape in lieu of the 3m compound? No residue. Super sticky. Can even be washed if dirt collects on it over time. Much cheaper too
Excellent idea and video. I apologize for not saying that initially.
Thanks
Amazing vid. Thanks. Two thumbs up
great video!
I was going to buy that sharpener for my swiss army knives but I was worried that the blade would be too small for the clamp, great video even though you are very close to rubbing the clamp there.. how do you find it for sak?
Hi
Thank you for your good video, how long does this knife sharpener usually work? And after how long should it be replaced?
How well does sandpaper cut super steels? I remember hearing that you need diamond to sharpen some of the high-end steel.
Lol
Oh forgot to ask what camera setup are you using?
This is so great 😀!! Thanks a million. Keep up the great work.
Thank you! Will do!
Alright I’m sold
Do you recommend this technique over the upgrade kit by worksharp?
yes
Way to go!! Bravo 😊
Great idea thanks !
Great video, nicely done!!
Wow their prices are significantly lower than Amazon. Thanks for sharing.
@@MrDands glad to help.
When you sit down and figure the cost per strip it's like .16 compared to three dollars at most sharpening sites. Such a rip off
Only draw back is you need to by a case. But when you think of it....your paying the price for a case by the end of the year if you sharpen many knives....a case will last way over ten years
:) Thanks again.
Keep in mind when you buy at Amazon that's pretty much retail, maybe slightly under depending on product.
do you have to re apply the adhesive regularly ? or does it stay tacky?
Inexpensive double-sided tape works well, too...
Where did you get ths all steel rod?. Even the ball joint is steel.
If you use a tough piece of leather or some rubber padding with the sandpaper you can also convex the edge.
Amazing exactly what I was looking for
Just subscribed and bought the worksharp off Amazon. They need to pay you for selling their product.
Awosme idea!!
Would there be any advantage to wetting the sandPaper?
Maybe worth a shot, my results have been satisfactory for me, but definitely worth a try wetting them.
You can do clickbait advertisements for this video
"Knife sharpening companies HATE this one simple trick!"
I hate click bait. I avoid it and won't go back to a site that uses it. In this case, there might be some truth to knife sharpening companies hating this trick. They would rather sell you the accessories. It looks like he has several videos on using this sharpener.
That is a GREAT idea. Thank you for the tip.
What is the measure device you used to determine sharpness
Hi, Q: Don't you have to put water on the sanding paper when it is 1000 and above? Thx.
Not at all, but it wont hurt anything if you do.
Excellent brother thank you for this awesome hack 🤙🏻🔪
Thanks a lot.
