      I have both the Gen 2 and the Gen 3 (the one you're reviewing in this video). For anyone interested, the Gen 3 IS FAR superior to the Gen 2 even considering quality of assembly and design. The Gen 2 needed a lot of tuning up to get it to work half way, but the play in the the Gen 2 was almost unliveable.
      Definitely buy the Gen 3, of course this is my experience so some may disagree.

      @@jamesfeldman5152 I have a Gen2 that is solid.... Only part that has play is the stoneholder , there's to much play on the bolt that holds the 2 parts together. Which allows the plates to bend if you push to hard on the handle.
      The sharpener/clamp itself is rocksolid ! And pretty much spot on for each side.

    • @TheScotsmann
      @TheScotsmann 29 дней назад

      @@dannybax1982 the stones are bending?
      You must still be using the plastic backed plates that shipped with the device, if they are bending. Change em out for bare minimum aluminum backed like TSPROF set of 5-6 starter diamond stones, $70-80 for the set. Not the best stones but if you buy a few good lower grit, 200-320 initial profiling stones from ATOMA or JENDE, you could potentially use the smoother TSPROF grits as finishing stones, as they will wear and become so much smoother grit, with use than they initially started as.
      Just a theory, 🤔 until one can afford another half thousand $ or more for top o the line stones.
      That’s my plan any way, whenever I get to affording a fixed angle machine.
      I’m certain Jared will be able to give you far better advice on my theory, as I’m still learning how to hand sharpen.
      Good luck all and thanks again Jared.

    I use L-adapters on my TSPROF Kadet Pro instead of the double clamp. They achieve the same thing, are also more flexible and cost half as much. To adjust the angle: 1. Clamp the knife with the blade as centrally as possible. 2. Select a whetstone. 3. Adjust the thickness of the whetstone on the compensator. 4. Place the whetstone on the push rod. 5. Adjust the stops on the push rod. 6. Place the whetstone on the blade. 7. Place the protractor on the push rod and set it to zero. 8. Place the protractor on the arm. 9. Select the desired angle (approx. -0.25 degrees as the angle adjusts slightly when the adjustment wheel is locked. e.g. if you want 17 degrees, set it to 16.75 degrees. After locking, it will be 17 degrees - at least that's the case with my TSPROF Kadet Pro). I mark the cutting edge with a pen so that the material removal can be better controlled during grinding.

And I must say, technology has come a long way in the artificial diamond industry, especially for high quality precision tools, I don’t understand why they still have to have cheap stones that don’t last like the ones that come stock with this system. Regardless, this is an amazing value!

  • @777edge
    @777edge 12 дней назад +4

    Good video but couple notes for you Jared - you discussed Wicked Edge and mentioned stone incompatibility. You CAN actually use any 6 inch stone with a Wicked Edge system, just get yourself the Gritomatic Leading Edge Wicked Edge stone holders and you'll be able to use any of your 6x1 stones on a Wicked Edge.
    Secondly, you don't need a central mounted clamp at all - if you move both clamps to the side of the clamp bar on this or any other similar sharpening system, the angle is NOT affected at all. The reason it looks that way to you, is you're using the digital angle cube incorrectly. A digital angle cube like yours is not a 3 axis angle cube (like the TSProf Axicube is as an example), so you have to make sure it's perpendicular to your sharpening bar and clamps when measuring your angle. If your angle cube is rotated slightly, it measures incorrectly.
    Hope this helps!

    • @simonnizerontheroad
      @simonnizerontheroad 5 дней назад +1

      You want both. Why the hell would you set all this up for a simple spear point that you will bring to 600gr maybe, if you have mastered freehand, 2-3 diamond plates, a strop and in 15mins you brought a fully blunt knife to hair popping sharp (even hair whittling, once you truly mastered holding your angle repetitively and transition from one to several strops) . If you have a different blade shape your not comfortable with freehand, if you have steels you wish to bring to a full mirror polish (it is exponentially easier with a fixed angle because you are not augmenting your chances of screwing up by augmenting your number of passes), where as freehand (unless you’re a robot or have a fixed wrist prosthetic arm) you definitely up the chances of a messup by doing hundreds of passes to bring out the mirror polish. Also if you are resharpening a knife you are familiar with, and maintaining the current edge angle: 100% freehand is faster, but if you are re-profiling the edge and fully changing the edge profile/angle, a fixed angle system will most definitely offer you way more precision and accuracy. Never listen to someone that affirms without any flexibility that their way is the only way and who pick a side and will defend their position no matter what. No matter the side they pick, they are wrong because they are set in their ways and wont expand/explore past their own self imposed mental limitations. The right answer is both. Mastering freehand is a skill that will follow you forever, and is favourable to certain situations. Having a quality fixed angle system will offer precision and repeatability like nothing else can. (Also; bonus perk of owning a quality fixed angle even if you have mastered freehand: if you are ever injured and loose temporarily usage/dexterity in one hand, you can still put a hair whittling edge on your blades with just one hand, even if it your weak hand. Try freehand sharpening with just one hand …😅)

      Another one that sees the slight bend. You can adjust for it, but why should you have to? Plus, depending on the bend, you could get an apple seed or hollow grind. A huge part of these designs is repeatability and those plastic plates aren't consistent. I've found the TSPROF 6 pc plate set would be a 5 compared to the plastics' 3. The PDTools Expert Pro plates I got from the USA Market link in Jareds description & they're amazing! 3 plates, 225, 650, 1100 for under $50 USD ea. There's always something better but I'd give these an 8/10.

Myself & I'd assume a few others are picky about such things like the plastic 'plate' bending slightly. In 80% of home or general use, you probably wouldn't notice. But enthusiasts will & that's why we get higher quality plates that will provide more consistent results & last longer - at a price, of course.

    I was interested in this until I figured the price that I would have to pay to get the diamond stones to make this system work for my knives. After going through those numbers, the new KME system is a much better value especially if you have already invested in the KME diamond stones and a handful of Jende custom stones for that system. It is tempting, but for me, I am upgrading my KME and sticking with their platforms. Plus that system comes with all of the clamps that are needed right out of the box.

If you don't have any stones you can buy a set of TSProf stones and one of these and it'll cost you about $170. That's significantly less than the cost of the new KME system to my money. But if you're already invested in a system and you're happy with that, sure, it makes sense to stick with it.

    • @NeevesKnives
      @NeevesKnives  17 дней назад +1

      It depends on the system you are using if the clamp is level then yes that's what you do however if the clamp holding blade is at angle you just either zero out then check clamp angle and rod angle and add the 2 numbers together. Or you can zero out on the clamp then the rod should be accurate to check.

    I have been into fixed angle sharpening for about 6 years. Started with a $20 table clamp type. Moved on progressively to better equipment. A few years ago settled on the KO3. My odd obsession is seeing how sharp of an edge I can get along with studying metallurgy to understand the composition of steel. I have made hundreds of thousands of pass. On I don't even know how many knives. Mostly EDC type. 95% done on the small clamp. ( Minimum) I have tried and very seriously put to the test many different styles. Except wicked edge. I will firmly guarantee you. You get what you pay for. I don't respect cloners of any type. Or their promotion. And that's what that was. Keep your sub.

      So you don’t like free market capitalism? This the the way of the world. And that being said as far as I’m concerned the hapstone and tsprof systems are a bit overpriced for what boils down to a few pieces of metal and machining that a machinist could make in about a day. Competition is the best thing in a free market system because the consumer benefits. The people who have the money to buy a tsprof will still buy it because they want the quality they believe tsprof affords them. The people that would buy this clone, like myself, were never going to buy a tsprof anyway because it’s too expensive. There are no losers in this situation. I am a huge fan of this channel and have been eyeing the xarlik system for a while but hasn’t found a review from someone that I am familiar with and so having seen an honest review (which I highly respect from Jared and not just crapping on the cheaper alternative) from one of my favorite knife tubers helps me make a better informed purchase. The free market always pushes companies to have to be better there is no reason as a consumer you shouldn’t like it
