    I get super nice mirror edeges by taking double sided tape and cutting strips of 800-3000 grit sandpaper on a worksharp precision adjust. I start with the 320 then once i usw the 600, i start taping pieces to the ceramic side. Also using water. And 15 strokes per grit to 800. Then 20 strokes to 3000. Honestly surprised myself with the results. Your technique has also brought some things to my attention that may help in a few areas. Awesome video. Thank you.

    A mirror finish is beautiful but honestly not all knife steels cut well with a mirror great information in the video but you need the micro serration for the knife to stay working sharp so the cross hatching works as we seen for mirror and mirror only for a perdy knife. Check out neeves he has a video explaining what steels like what kind/grit edge. For example maxamet takes a mirror but so slick it’s just show I keep my maxamet pars 3 at about 400 grit and it keeps a sharp edge for so long thanks for the info in the video not judging so please don’t take it that way at all I use the same system but use a 6 inch stone holder with venev stones keep up the great videos I’m now a subscriber

      @TheTerribleTen  19 дней назад

      @@bighamz1175 that is a great point, and something I could have made more clear in my video. That's being said, I wasn't trying to make a video like neeves made (which is great), I was trying to show how to get a mirror polish -- that's it. Then everyone can use the information however they want. Got a maxamet blade? Cool, don't put a mirror polish on it. I'm not saying every knife HAS to have a mirror polish, just that it's possible on this system and how to do it.
      You make a great point and if I ever make a followup I will definitely make that more clear :)

    I agree with 90 percent of what you’re passing along. A lot of it is known sharpening facts but I question the 5x5x5x5 2 times and then 5x5x5 x5 and then 4x4x4x4 and I’m still learning myself but it might not take every steel that long to create a burr or it might take some steels longer. And don’t you want to stop once the burr is formed and then drop down in grit and continue on the procedure? I just feel like for some blades 440. 8CR 15V you’re just going to be wasting material. Sure it’ll take years and years to really chew through your blade but i feel as for some blades it might be overkill and for some maybe not enough. Looking for your feedback! Great informational video by the way. Oh I have seen one other guy get a mirror finish with this system and a strop but he was using the saw method and it was still a bit rough.

    • @TheTerribleTen
      @TheTerribleTen  19 дней назад +1

      @@Ryan.S924 thank you so much for your detailed comment, those are great points and I agree with them. There are a couple reasons I mention the strategy the way I do, but you are correct -- the most important thing is to look for a bur IF you care about sharpening less material away.
      1. Most stock blades have inconsistent grinds, and require a lot of attention to rebalance. I mention this during the meaty part of the video.
      2. Stopping at a bur will leave a lot of the valleys in the material, because a bur can form at micro intervals and it FEELS like it's all the way across, but in reality there are a little of microscopic areas which need leveling off.
      3. Consistency. I'm trying to strike the balance between seasoned sharpeners and novices, so I laid out what I thought would be good ground rules based on my own testing for reliable mirror edges.
      4. With some decent stropping you can MAINTAIN. Mirror edge, and touch it up with ceramic, so hopefully you aren't starting over 5x5 4x4 3x3 etc. I would never take a knife I've already mirrored through that process unless I beat the heck out of it. I'd probably start at 600 grit, ceramic, strop.
      5. Risk vs. reward. As you mentioned, it would take a Looooong time to remove enough material from your knife to be significant, but those watching the video would probably consider that worth it in the long run since what they are here for is mirror finishes. Everything has a pro and con.
      That all being said, you make an excellent point and I'm glad you commented. Anyone who is concerned about removing a lot of material should take note of your thoughts and consider the points I mentioned above.
      Thanks again friend! Happy sharpening

    Breaking your scratch pattern with a cross hatching pattern will work for polishing better without going way up on grit. It helps break up small faceting. The problem is that you are creating a broken tooth pattern to the micro serrations. This is how to get a great paper slicing edge that will pop hair and whittle hair but it will loose it's bite incredibly quickly in use creating a slick edge with in just one or two strop backs. If you don't care about maintaining bite in the edge and just want great push cutting performance then what your doing is great. If you want to create a mirror edge without creating a slick edge then cross hatching is not gonna work well for ya. I personally can't stand a slick edge.

    • @TheTerribleTen
      @TheTerribleTen  2 месяца назад

      Those are great points thanks for bringing them up. As you mentioned the goal of this video was not to talk about edge retention or edge bite which is incredibly difficult to measure and test, this video was purely to demonstrate how to get a mirror edge without using any additional tools or techniques. That being said I do agree with your points and think it comes down to personal preference as you mentioned. I don't mind a slick edge at all especially since I usually have leather around and stropping my knife up isn't an issue for me. Thanks again for trimming in!

      I have not used the KO3, but I do know that it's basically on another level and is essentially the granddaddy of the precision adjust. It has way more capability, bigger range, more grits, so many more amazing things about it. And I would certainly hope so since it's 700 to $1,000.

    Hi
    Thank you for your good video, how long does this knife sharpener usually work? And after how long should it be replaced?
    Second question, how can we find out what angle number to use for each type of knife, such as 15 degrees or 17 degrees or 20 degrees or 25 degrees or 30 degrees?

    • @TheTerribleTen
      @TheTerribleTen  4 месяца назад +1

      Hey! These "stones" can last YEARS, you shouldn't have to replace it any time soon if you take care of it.
      There are great websites and videos outlining what angle is best for each application. It all depends on what you're doing with it, what the steel is, etc.

    You shouldn't use water on those diamond stones because they will start to rust out. It's an interesting video but seems like a lot of extra work. I use the work sharp precision and it works great but if I want a mirror polish I literally use 3 small leather strips with diamond paste. And the paste is like 10 bucks. But if you search 4 inch hapstone holder for work sharp you can start adding higher grits for it. Great video 👍

    • @TheTerribleTen
      @TheTerribleTen  Год назад +2

      Thanks so much for the great comment! I didn't specifically call it out but I do dry each stone after use. I've used water on diamond stones for about 10 years now and haven't had any rust yet. Fingers crossed.
      Totally valid point there, that's definitely another way to get a polish. The reason for the video was to see if I could accomplish a mirror polish without any compounds, but that's definitely a way to do it.
      LOVE the after market components for this system, as you mention. I call those out in the extended intro.
