    Is there any way to set animation keyframes rather then just hitting space and recording the movements of the character as all the other animations play? Makes things really difficult.

    Keep in mind that it's better to rotate limbs into position instead of moving them. That way, they'll keep their shape and not get all stretched. Hope that helps.

      thanks, i do this alot ,but sometimes when you just rotate, the arms get skrunched up at the jointed if you roate to far, so it depend on what your trying to do

    I believe I have manipulation down. Pretty easy. The thing I'm worried about is pose-to-pose animation.

    Here's a tip for the screen manipulator, when moving something by free rotating, don't focus on the line but focus on the object as you rotate it.

      It's likely that the active camera is somewhere else in the map and that you are looking out the work camera. Models spawn in front of the active camera for the shot.

      You need to select your shot in the clip editor. Then in the motion editor, spawn whatever model or prop. Create Animations Set for New Model, then it should be there.

    Ive tried selecting the model a million times... I can only move the camera and select the model, but no animation or manipulating options come up; aka the box, arrows, lines, ability to move and change position of object via viewport doesn't appear when I select the model.

    i love valve. they make their animation software free, make some of the best games in the world, and you can buy all of them together for like ten bucks they are my favorite game developers

    I’m a bit frustrated with this. I still can’t figure out the camera. The viewports are flickering to the point where I can’t see what I’m doing whatsoever. Any tips for moving the camera/models when you can’t see a thing? Thanks.

    1) right click primary viewport.
    2) Uncheck "Progressive Refinement"
    3) click render settings and UNCHECK "Ambient Occlusion"
    4) added optional benefit: disable "Lighting"

    The wheelbarrow part is so confusing. I understand what he is saying, but none of it seems to be working for me. I try selecting both ways, I think it works cuz the words turn yellow, but im not sure. When I click translation nothing happens, and I am doing everything instructed on this video. What is happening???

    Hey there. I just started using SFM and have a question. I just got done watching this vid and added in Sniper with the wheelbarrow in the background the same way you did with Pyro. The problem is, in the next shot he's not where he was in the zoomed in reaction shot. How do I add him in there in the same pose and same place without having to completely do all that again? Thanks in advance.

    A really confusing issue: Trying to click on a bone on a model brings up the manipulation tools... on the other viewport? I am really confused, they only show up on the opposite viewport, never both!

    Why animate anything? Two scouts running with a random shot to a pyro holding a wheelbarrow may very well be the best movie sfm has ever made.

    It's the layout that it is different. You can switch back to the old layout by going in window>layouts>default or use the hotkeys.

    what do you do if you want an object to appear in the other shots you have already made? for example the pyro and the wheel barrow don't appear in take 1 when the scouts start running in your example. do you have to go back and rerecord the shot? or is there a way to edit that shot so that the new objects appear there?

    Yes, right click the file in the animation set editor, and one of the options is to set skin, the defaults allow for changing team color as well as the two Ubercharge skins.

    Tip: Click the 'pelvis' with the CTRL key on the model, and you should be able to move the whole model

    Are you in the motion editor? Second tab under the tab marked "Timeline" with the chosen model selected from the animation set editor? Do you have the right tool selected underneath the preview window?

    uhhh, in tf2 console, pyro always made a manly grunt noise when he took fall damage (all the other classes made the same noise)

    move the camera to the player model. hold CTRL and you should see a whole bunch of dots connected by lines forming sort of a skeleton within the player model. click on a certain dot or line to move it with one of the transformation tools.

    If you mean move around the ragdoll as a whole, on the left side just choose "pyro" on top of all the pyro items, then you can move it as a whole.

    The pyro only shows up in the shot you stuck him in. As you pan with the action, the pyro disappears from the background. Does it have to be added to each shot individually?

    Windows Tab --> Secondary Viewpoint. When the 2nd camera pops up, click and drag it by the tab and hover it over it over any of the boxes that appear when you do so. To get the same view as the one seen in this tutorial video, drag it to the right box in the set of boxes that appears in the middle of the primary camera.

    When I'm using the transform tool, the gizmo doesn't show up. All I see is a blue square.
    I can see it when using the rotation tool, but when I try rotate my wheelbarrow the object disappears... Wtf!!!

    I can't seem to insert a new shot. When I try to highlight the inpoint of shot2, the cursor doesn't change. And when I hold down ctrl and click and drag, it just changes the length of shot2.

    I have no idea why but when I change the selection to Move I don't get the Transform manipulator. I'm in the Motion Editor and have the wheelbarrow selected but I can only move the object by dragging the pivot point and not precisely on each axis. HELP, this is annoying me.

    0:18 I hold down crtl but the cursor doesn't change... I try to drag the shot, but it doesn't create a gap, it just acts like crtl isn't being held. Any help?

    sorry lemme correct myself: one is the primary view, the other is the secondary. to manipulate ur layout u drag the tab for whatever u want to move, and white squares appear. drag the tab onto those squares to align that tab to that area. experiment with it a bit with ur custom layouts

    When i spawn in the pyro it doesn't spawn infront of me and i can't find him.

    when I move the pyro, the root transform doesn't stay in the center of the model. i moved it, then started moving some of the joints, then i decided to move the entire model again, but when i did, i noticed the root transform stayed in the original location of the model. what am i doing wrong? i tried double clicking that part of the transform tool, but it didn't go back to the center of the model.

    When I click on create animation set for new model I do not get the entire right side of the window (I can't see a preview of the model). Did I accidentally change a setting?

    No I mean that the buttons at the centre (under the camera-views); including basic playback buttons (play, pause, record, skip, etc.) aren't there at all when I switch to the double-camera view as with this entire tutorial (i.e. from the start of this video).
    I know there's hotkeys to these functions, but I really need to have this kind of layout, preferably with the buttons needed...
    It's also rather puzzling as to why this happened in the first place...?

    simply put--only valve models will work right away with phoneme extraction. custom models use completely different facial sliders, so you'll have to rename each slider to its corresponding valve slider. i suggest watching @MaxOfS2D 's tutorial on how to do that.

      I believe you have to click to gt it to change, or at least that's what mine does. And make sure you're holding ctrl

    Okay, I've just followed your little tutorial. . . . imported a character by using the "create animation set for new model".... pressed ctrl.... got the manipulator arrows..... so far so good.
    MOVED said arrows away from the camera to the opposite side of the room.... continues to get a super close up shot of ALYX's crotch. moved arrows again still the same . . . . the model will not move . . . . IT WILL NOT FLIPPING MOVE ! ! ! what am I not doing right ? ? ?

    "Now that we have all of time and an object selected" sounds like a perfectly reasonable statement when you're talking about SFM, but take it out of context and it sounds like some sort of temporal wizard or another is going to start wrecking havoc on everything.

    1. Select "View"
    2. Select "Show Secondary Viewport Controls"
    3. A new window will open up with a tab that says "Secondary Viewport". Grab the tab with your mouse and drag it to where you want that viewport ("window") to be.
