I'm 15 years old and have wanted to learn SFM for a while. These tutorials really help. I now know how to do simple animations, use different rigs, import models from different games and more. These are the best tutorials on RUclips!
"It stops me from being able to create a gap, now all the gap frames are at the end. That's because the SFM is automatically collapsing time, we added this because we were constantly getting black frames between the frames and we decided it was just better..." Son, That's why Black-holes.
When i started today on sfm: This will be so easy! When I try to edit: Ugh this is so hard! When I watch all of these videos: Omg this is so easy and fun.
Last tip = best tip! Would be a real tragic shame to get to making, well, a top-movie and then forget to safe it, discovering later all ya hard work's gone DX
That moment when you have been working 7 months for a 30 minutes animation and exactly before finishing and saving your sfm crashes....this happened to me but at a GMod animation.
This looks awesome. Having experience using editing software this looks great. Looks easy to use with the proper know how and sounds like you can do amazing work with it the more advanced the user wants to take it.
So I have a habit of not saving my SFM work until I'm finished with the whole project. So whenever you say "And remember to press Control S to save you work" I was like: Ooh, can't forget that.
It seems as if a lot of people think that this is going to be some super-easy intuitive program. It wont. If you want to make a nice looking SFM, your going to have to spend a lot of time practicing, plus a lot more. 3D animation of any sort is super time consuming, and requires a lot of patience.
I love how you say save your work at the end of the videos. I am creating a film while watching through these videos and I was just about to leave my computer without saving. Also, thankyou for making these (I would be so lost otherwise), and thankyou for releasing the SFM.
Confusing and hard at first, but not impossible. I recommend taking simple notes on certain shortcuts and their purpose so you don't forget later on, if you keep forgetting the information.
+Unshippedtundra It takes time to learn it. Just need to watch these, mess with it for a while, then eventually you will start to pick it up and do something great with it, that is what I am doing now. You just need to keep going at it.
Its really cool that Valve would release something like this. Its a win win really. Now that the average person can make a really slick looking machinima. there will be more videos about their game, also this will keep their community happy with these kinda things. Valve knows how to treat their community.
At a young age and intrested in making animations in tf2, this helps a ton and you don't understand how much this helps. I created a little film called "badwater gameplay".
This is... Amazing. And it's FREE?? I'm so surprised, thanks valve keep it up, and these tutorials are awesome too! (if the full release isn't free I'll buy it anyway :/)
on the bright side the community is pretty big. wont be long before someone starts picking up the slack and making decent tutorial videos. that being said i really much prefer listening to this guy. his teaching voice is so smooth :3. Barely ever says umm or aah
So if you moved a shot with ALT + SHIFT and you made a mistake, how do you put the shot back to the original place so as to avoid the entire scene from skipping time?
To anybody starting out, I would recommend 13.1 Pose to pose animation, It is a lot easier to follow, And requires no prior knowledge of SFM, or animation in general. It takes you through every step and leaves nothing up to chance.
That interface is so damn sexy. I bet Autodesk and Adobe and crying they couldn't get a program 1% as good as this. Now all we need is Valve to make their own 3D modelling and rendering software.
TF2 is the pinnacle of Valve's source engine development. It's a live, well played lab rat that they can use to test new systems and features for the Source Engine. This is one of them.
Question: I have a 3 shot sequence, but want to alter what the actor in the first shot does without messing with anything else. Is there a way to remove individual actors from the set so I can just rerecord it?
I pray to get a beta key if I don't? I honestly don't care. I am sure this will be free when it's fully released, if it's not, I will save all the money I ever get to get it! This is amazing. :)
Agree, maybe i dont learn everything by watching this once, but i learn the basics, and then i can watch this 2-3 times to understand everything and remember
So I made a scene in which an engineer's sentry was supposed to shoot at these characters running by, but the sentry doesn't seem to attack. How do I make it do that?
I might just be missing something obvious, but how do you create a "master shot"? You did it between the last episode and this one so I am stuck and can't figure out how to make one.
So, I have the Gmad converter. Now how do I import Gmod stuff into SFM? I just recently got SFM and would really like to make a movie. =/ I've tried converting things, but have no clue how to get it in SFM. Also, nice videos so far.
I'd say it is way easier than most video editing tools out there. I have it too... It's mostly about getting the hang of it, knowing where's what, and stuff.
You cut up the recording, so you can change the camera angle for the clip you've just cut from the main clip. I.e, you have an overview camera shot, you cut the clip with the blade, and then you can change the angle of the clip you just separated into a close-up. Hope this helped.
I had the same problem for a while. I think you should click on the timeline where you would want it to be and press and hold "B" if not try pressing it a few more times after that, it just started to work like that for me, so I guess it's a matter of pressing and holding or just pressing it a lot. >3
Well it's actually much easier than the gmod. Also if you keep practice and re watching the tutorials, I'm pretty sure we all manage to do some great+funny movies
It helps if you follow what he's doing. Try doing every step of the tutorial that he's doing, sort of like your at school. That's what I'm doing. It helps especially because if there was something you didn't understand you could just go back to it and see what you did wrong, or what you missed. In a way, it's alot better than school. You don't have to take notes, just rewind what he said.
Hello SourceFilmMaker!I have a question. Can i take some game replay like a map and do sfm editing(change the camera angle, slowmotion capture etc)? Thx, sorry for my bad english.
Okay, seems very cool, but what about editing .dem files? And what about importing avi's or custom pictures, intro's etc. so I don't have to re-render it in vegas?
you know big visual effects studios have theyre own animation tools, they use max and maya for small jobs, when it goes to hard core stuff, there comes custom stuff.
dqflynn I'm pretty sure (Not completely though) that you have to download the Portal DLC which is free, go under "File" >> "Downloadable Content" >> "Install Portal Content Pack" or simply go to the Steam app and go to SFM, before launching, select the Portal DLC and wait for install. Hope this helps.
Hey....I Know How Do To SOME Stuff Thanks To You But What Is The Perfect FPS? I Put It On 60:00 And It Goes Kinda Laggy How Many FPS Do You Have It On??
Generally speaking, videos that are more like films rather than gameplays are better with 24 fps because there is already motion blur. You also see this in TV shows, it's almost always 24 fps
El Jugador Try exporting it as Image Sequence instead of a movie in the render settings after you changed it to 60 fps. This will export the film frame by frame in Wallpaper quality, meaning you will loose no quality. You should create a new folder if you save it on your desktop because otherwise you whole screen will be spammed full with all the pictures. Also, keep in mind that it is lossless, thus rendering will take about three times longer. Later on, you can put all the frames back together with a video editing program. I personally use Adobe Premiere for this but you can use anything that is capable of interpreting PNG pictures together as a video. You'll have to look up a tutorial for whatever program you use for that. Remember to also put the fps to 60 in that program and then render it together. I have never done this with 60 fps but it should work better considering how... Let's call it strange... The source engine is. I don't even wonder. But you should always use that method. I only recently found that out and it really makes the video look better and might as well fix your problem. Damn that was a long text.

This is a very easy tutorial to understand and learn, even for non-English native speakers (such as myself). I'd give this guy a medal right away.
This entry was particularly helpful to me. It hit the very point that I was trying to figure out (Camera transitions). Top job, sir.
Me, too. I always hate how I think "Oh, I get this now," pause the video, then do a whole bunch of crap and ruin it XD. Off topic, I know, but :P

you know big visual effects studios have theyre own animation tools, they use max and maya for small jobs, when it goes to hard core stuff, there comes custom stuff.

right click on the viewport, click render settings, and uncheck SSAO, this will greatly improve framerate while working
