SMH can play back the animations in real time, and you can bind that play button to any key in your keyboard using the Source Engine console without having to bring up the SMH GUI, so it's seamless. Notice how immediately after grabbing Luigi with the physgun they unfreeze him so that he'll actually ragdollize and come along. That probably took a few takes to get right.

Seeing this tutorial just reminds me of how far Gmod animations have come, from the pinnacle being considered just throwing invisible thrusters on a ragdoll and going wild to THIS. Also, remember kids, SAVE. You think his saving here is overexcessive, but if you ever work in any professional field, or have a creative hobby, or even just play games, for the love of god, SAVE. You never know when a random application crash, blue screen, or power outage is gonna happen. And you don't wanna be ripped out of like 2+ hours of work just because you decided to put off saving for later.
I normally go to these kinds of videos for inspiration, I right now suck ass at making gmod animations, I just fail to make thing smooth, but each time I see a gmod video by Eltorro or CrazyScout I feel like I can do something better. And after I fail, I watch another video, again and again, Until I finally made a gmod video that is at least decent.
This tutorial has helped me a lot in GMod shenanigans, and I've learned a few more things along the way: -If you want to be able to change faces without messing with posing, look into the timeloine feature. It lets you have frames that are only for pose and only for other things, so they aren't connected. -I had to rewatch this a few times to get what the add/remove frame smoothing was for. Ease in/out is for the speed of the movement, while Eltorro's trick is for the position and rotation. -If you want to edit a bone you can't select (such as fingers, part of limbs, or jigglebones), you can through the tree view in the context menu. Personally, the finger poser confuses me and seems restricted, so I'll likely just use the ragdoll mover for it. I love the ragdoll mover, even for moving props and such, but it has some issues. -The thingy doesn't appear the very first time I select a bone with it, but re-selecting that bone seems to work. -It completely stops working on bones that go in the ground, so I would really recommend avoiding that. -The scale mode looks a lot like the position mode, so watch out for that too (you can reset bone scale and rotation in the menu). This happens to me a lot because I often middle-click with the tool equipped while in other menus. -Sometimes, bones are just very hard to select on a model. Eltorro likely has the right approach, using the RDM for the spine and such and the physgun for arms and head, but the tree view is perfect if you prefer RDM's precision.
How to animate the arms and legs right after body? First i was animating body and after this i wanted to animate the arm, just like Eltorro64rus did in this tutorial. But arm was stick at the start pose on all frames. That means that after changes arm returns to start pose
yeah but at least you no longer have to painstakingly animate every single frame and only to be almost done and notice a small but noticeable mistake in the middle of the animation and have to do it all over again
This is just…so much info for me. I may never make them as good as people like you, but goddamn I’ll always enjoy seeing the silliness behind Gmod animations. Thanks for this Rus!

That's like the only tutorial that is not just "uuhmhm press this button and this hhmmnmn happens" I've been searching for something like this for ages, it's the most comprehensive, simple and yet detailed tutorial on everything you need to know, almost like the only one that doesn't leave you with confused face and need for googling stuff because it didn't cover something important. Thank you for your service, you brought a lot of entertainment in our lives and by uploading this video, you shown that you didn't do that for money, that you actually respect your audience, you've been the most loyal to your craft. Also I think that would be fair to say you are the best gmod/sfm animator ever, because not only your animations are high quality and very smooth (wich is already very hard to get), but also it is stylised, and very well done, wich makes it priceless, being very unique and enjoyable animation, almost one in a kind.
Thank you all for complimenting me, that's a really high praise, even now 2 years later when I have improved somewhat, I guess I was so cautious of people telling me my english sucks because at the time I didn't know if I'm doing anything right at all, learned it too fast and took my time getting used to it. Also because I learned it exclusively by arguing on 2fort in casual and watching pewdiepie's minecraft series in a year and a half, anyone would question their knowledge if this was how they got it lol. And since I'm here replying to the recent comment, sorry for ignoring the old ones.
I've experimented with some animation recently and watched some videos that explained animation very well. Now, I have the perspective that all animation can be boiled down to establishing ideas, knowing the hows and whys of various types of movement and timing, and knowing when to pull back. That especially applies to animators like you who make straight-up insane and impossible movements that amplify the comedy but aren't too distracting or don't ruin the flow of the animation. I've also been learning that animation itself isn't all that complicated, it's just very time-consuming.
people can yell at valve all day for taking forever to do things but at the end of the day, if valve makes it, it's probably quality (even if it's not what we want)
i tried your smoothing method and keyframing method with a 10 minute bake and it turned out, actually better than i expected, like this was the first time i smiled after trying to animate something again
Its amazing how much effort you put on your videos, i though you used source film maker to make videos, i also didnt think it was possible to make smooth animations on gmod. Keep it up!
What the actual duck, this video has been released a day after I started looking for new tutorials about gmod animation and this god just updated after years, coincidence? I dont think so
"HO-ly Mary Mother of Joseph!" You should join one of those teams that does Saxxy-level content. I couldn't begin to comprehend doing this much work for those simple, short animations. Truly blows my mind. (PLEASE don't tell me that Saxxy-winners do their animations all by themselves?)
important to note: every action a human character might do is in an arc. that's why you delete frames in an SMH animation and add new ones, it's to ease the motion shape into an arc as opposed to straight lines. this is called the "arc" principal, an INTEGRAL principle of animation due to the fact that movement, as a rule, is always in an arc. non-arc movement makes something look robotic. if you were to throw a ball, for instance, regardless of the power of the ball, it will eventually begin to drop downwards, turning the mostly straight line it was traveling in, into an arc. ANY object that is in focus, or even in the background if it is large enough, should move in an arc. that is why you delete frames in an SMH animation and, in the box example, lower the trajectory that the box moves in. honestly, in an animation imo, the threemost important principles are: arc, anticipation, and ease in/ease out. without those three principles, your animation, especially if it's a humanoid, will NOT look good, ever. everything else can be mostly foregone if you have those. for more information, read the book "Disney Animation: The Illusion of Life", it'll explain so much of what is important when it comes to animation.
You may be happy to learn that your animations and tutorial have indeed inspired and helped me get into animating, and doing im doing it pretty well :D
Okay, finally trying out your method 4 months after you've uploaded this, and i gotta say, this really streamlines the process and opens up a lot of opportunities for better quality Even just animating a stupid box bouncing around takes only a few seconds, and it just blows my mind how good it looks without having to struggle and stress over stopmotion techniques.
This video helped me so much with animation. I literally CANNOT that you enough. I'm currently working on something using this tutorial and it's coming out quite well!

For learning English That was Amazing! I don't think it's even POSSIBLE To judge that Stuff right there.
Just out of curiosity, how many hours do you have in Garry's Mod according to Steam? I imagine about 10K.
on garry's mod he have 7.850k hours
That man played more gareysmos then i videogames
@@redxstudios2565 Its understandable, this game is magical, I don't even animate and I have 1k and a lot of good memories

The most legendary tutorial I get to bear witness to. Eltorro, you are an absolute unit of a lad.
Me before the video: Animation can’t be that hard
Me halfway into the video: looks like cocaine is the only practical way to speed things up
It is essential for the plot writing anyway
This is why you don’t yell at animators if they animate to slow.Animating is hard as balls.
people can yell at valve all day for taking forever to do things but at the end of the day, if valve makes it, it's probably quality (even if it's not what we want)
i tried your smoothing method and keyframing method with a 10 minute bake and it turned out, actually better than i expected, like this was the first time i smiled after trying to animate something again
I love how he edited all his thumbnails to be be creepy now that halloween is near

@FrenchFriedPotaters the spah
important to note: every action a human character might do is in an arc. that's why you delete frames in an SMH animation and add new ones, it's to ease the motion shape into an arc as opposed to straight lines.
this is called the "arc" principal, an INTEGRAL principle of animation due to the fact that movement, as a rule, is always in an arc. non-arc movement makes something look robotic.
if you were to throw a ball, for instance, regardless of the power of the ball, it will eventually begin to drop downwards, turning the mostly straight line it was traveling in, into an arc.
This tutorial makes me realize how much time you put into these masterpieces
your gmod animations look so smooth that it looks like it's all done in sfm. just wonderful!
You may be happy to learn that your animations and tutorial have indeed inspired and helped me get into animating, and doing im doing it pretty well :D
I honestly thought this was a joke. This is actual help. Now I just need gmod
Oh hell no. Never question anybody on why it takes them so long to animate something.
I saw an old stop motion video without SMH demonstrating that an hour of work = 5 seconds of video
Okay, finally trying out your method 4 months after you've uploaded this, and i gotta say, this really streamlines the process and opens up a lot of opportunities for better quality
Even just animating a stupid box bouncing around takes only a few seconds, and it just blows my mind how good it looks without having to struggle and stress over stopmotion techniques.
Wait did you just remove all the pupils from all your thumbnails? Well thats what I call dedication :D Is a halloweenspecial to be expected?
