Never played much online, we were more interested in just hanging out with ourselves and setting up little scenes, driving vehicles, or killing each-other over and over again. I really envy that time we had together, we’re both grown and work all time time or have other commitments. You didn't mention the earliest gm_construct maps having a panel in the map itself to spawn ragdolls and props, since back in the day, garry's mod had not yet implemented a spawn menu you could just open up whenever. It's a neat detail, even if it doesn't concern the video's topic too much.

it’s strange how no matter whether a newer player or playing since the beginning, everyone seems to have the same feelings about Gmod maps. This video was the video that convinced me to play Gmod, I already had it but didn't understand it, I wasn't into source games back then either so to me Gmod was a weird game that had props that did seemingly nothing and nothing to really do, I didn't even know how to spawn NPC's or use the tool gun.
One late night I was watching youtube and found this video, I watched it and something about its simplicity and sandbox nature made me engrossed in it. I think it just opened up to me what Gmod could do beyond just letting you spawn in props. That intro got me hooked immediately cause I didn't know you could spawn in zombies, I didn't think to decorate the world and all sorts of things. So if by chance the creator sees this than thanks!
If anyone else read this then thanks for reading and have an amazing day

Not sure if anyone said this but it reminds me of a chapter in the book “coraline” (or the movie) where coraline is exploring the realm the other mother made but the more she explored further out, the more the buildings just seem to look empty and have nothing in it, it’s just hollow and it’s only purpose is to seem like the other mother world is populated with people . I guess it’s like the gmod setting with all the empty back rooms like buildings but yet it still somehow feels comforting

The fact I have nearly 5000 hours in the game is a testiment to this and honestly, I still come back to what I did when I was younger. Now I mostly do zombie single player rp style set ups using ported maps from day of defeat, but every once in a while I'll go back and just have fun in a large open map, install some mods for building contraptions and have fun. Maybe fight combine. Garry's mod is an amazing game for just letting your imagination go.

I always had a weard melancholic feeling while playing cs 1.6, and had the same feeling playing half life 1 and 2, and portal. For some reason source engine causes this feeling.
I think it's because the light, shadow, texture, everything is realistic but at the same time empty and fake (uncanny).

It's REALLY cool seeing someone talk about gmod in a way that was similar to how I enjoyed it- growing up, my brother was much more intense about it being a shooting game and the only point is to find ways to kill each other- and while that's really fun sometimes, when I finally got my OWN computer and got my own copy of the game, I would scour the workshop for ragdoll addons and download them, and set up little scenes for HOURS. Like yeah, I murdered, too, but there's something so sweet about just sitting there carefully moving your mouse and holding down the e key to get the position of a soda can juuuust right.
I have 3000+ hours on gmod- and I still get the exact same rush of delight playing it as I did when I was in middle school. It's really cool seeing someone dissect the maps and how fun they are- even if they're a bit uncanny(i used to think i was just a paranoid freak for getting unsettled sometimes, lol. It's great to hear people feel the same). TY for this video, I'll be sure to check out your others, too :D

I'm pretty sure Garry's Mod was my introduction into PC gaming, I was into console gaming at the time, but the whole sandbox-y nature of Garry's Mod fascinated me, just like you. I watched so many gmod comedy videos back then, that was my style of humor throughout middle school. Even if I don't play it as much today, it still sticks with me.
Thanks for sharing your story, and thanks for the kind comment 🙂

I along with a friend of mine who ran a stormchasers server called Doppler Gaming around 8 years ago were actually experimenting with map making, going so far as making a flatgrass map with all of the tornadoes from the stormchasers series maps. Of course that involved a lot of 'ripping' from the original maps, and getting us into all sorts of trouble, but it just shows how far someone would go to make a simple map more complex than it needs to be.

I think the reasoning as to why most of the gm_construct buildings are empty, is because the map is seemingly made for players to fill those rooms, with their creativity, and constructing skills.

There is a short scifi story by Robert Sheckley called Fishing Season. It talks about a series of disappearances involving things that seem like everyday mundane objects (a milk carton, canned food) that upon a closer inspection are slightly off imitations.

You just gave me a reason to play my old fav game again. I just built a ton of crap for thousands of hours in construct or some workshop maps, drove around with modded cars, built my own cars or gas stations. I just love gmod. Sadly ecept my brother nobody was as interested in this as I was. So i stopped playing to switch to games my friends play. But no game except gmod gave me the same endless satisfaction in every aspect of the game.
I am still sad about my hacked old steam account with my builds and all... Thousands of hours of playtime almost gone. Just stored in my memories. Setup 2-factor auth everyone. Dont let hackers take what is most precious to us!

Seeing you talk about all these changes to the map that I've never even seen as if they're some shared nostalgia is messing with my head. The last update of construct I remember is the expansion of the garage with the white/colour room, it's kinda funny to see that at some point they decided to take the skybox apartment buildings and just recreate them out of brushes, it's a nice addition and feels like it hasn't even changed the map, we're just sort of exploring a little more of what was already there.
I think what makes a map that feels like construct is those red and white wall textures, the clean concrete and grass, unsupported concrete ramps and an overall "in construction" aesthetic. Construct has a really excellent colour palette that you could break down into a really minimalist design and still recognise (and I just remembered Ultrakill does just this for its sandbox mode)

There is a theory that Gordon is in a 30-year-old dream because only the characters he knows in half-life
And also the most bizarre and obscure that in this world the person is alone and he spawns npcs to keep him company
And gordon was trapped in that dream for 20 years before the HALF-LIFE 2 event
