We ended up with 11/15 successfully hatched! Not too bad. We now have 1 broody hen... think we should give her some fertile hatching eggs too? 🤔

Yep! Just did the same thing. We had 17/24 hatch. Little Mrs. broody is now sitting on 5 more eggs to hatch.

I would totally put eggs under her. I prefer the hens doing all the work. They seem to have a way better hatch rate as well. Wish I had a broody hen right now. I got some gorgeous eggs I want incubated 😂

That's my "tip", let a momma hen do it! I thought that that was GREAT fun! AND this chicks are better mannered

Love hatching baby chicks! We've had the best results with our brinsea incubator. 100% hatch rate twice in a row! In our old incubator it was about 70%-80%.

I hatched my first batch of chicks this year and noticed that it is completely fine if the chicks peck each other they don’t hurt each other. They aren’t strong enough yet, but I did have one chick pack an egg and help another chick get out and would always pack the other chicks toes because they don’t know what food is yet. But congratulations on your first successful hatch.

We had 7 chicks hatch with two broody hens and it is so fun to watch the interaction between mamas and chicks. They do all the work! I’ve decided to get future chicks through broody hens vs hatching in an incubator. But if you don’t have a rooster, then the incubator option is great! 😊🐣

Hatching is SO addicting. Ive done it for years now. Nurture Right 360 is the best IMHO s far as leaving the chicks in after hatching. I give them at least 24 hours and make sure they have friends to move with them. (No one like to be alone) I also allow my hens to hatch as well, every females want the experience, so when it comes to opening the lid to the incubator(Now that ive done it so long) I use the teachings of the momma chickens. I will open it and do what I need without stress, the mommas go eat and drink, them come back to lay on the nest. No stress, enjoy! Becarefulthis is where chicken math gets crazy

I used the same incubator. I used shelf liner to prevent spray leg. I have had some chicks hatch a week later. Dark eggs use very warm water and put the egg in it will wiggle from chick moving. Make sure no pip in shell when you do this

I hatched my first chicks this year too! I used a $40 incubator off of Amazon and hatched 4/12. Three of my eggs ended up not being fertile, but I still didn’t have a great hatch rate! In the future I would definitely invest in a better incubator. It looked so cramped when the chicks were hatching-I can’t even imagine how it would’ve looked if they all hatched!

I’ve had my hens for 3 years and just got a rooster a few months ago. 2 of my hens went broody and I just put 3 eggs under each of them yesterday. I’m really curious as to how my hatching experiment will go. I’ve had the hens since they were chicks but recently lost 2 (I think they were egg bound) so am down to 7 and knew I would need to start replacing them as their egg production slows down

Hi! So I am hoping that I get some silkies and one Easter egger chicken soon and do u think that’s ok to have two breeds together. Also, is it true that the first egg they lay will be the color egg they always lay?
