Heard that can happen and catch not only your brooder but house on fire. I switched to a radiant heater, and if safe enough for shavings should work with paper towels.

I use that rubberised non slip lkitchen cupboard liner on top of newspaper to stop the chicks from getting splayed legs. So easy to wash by throwing the used liner in the washing machine and can be reused over and over again.

I know of a person who had chicks, in a container in their basement. I do not know what kind of container they were in, but the heat lamp fell over and caught the house on fire. They lost all the chicks, their dog, the house, but they made it out alive. Good reminder about heat lamps.

I use a homemade electrolyte water for my baby chicks and full sz birds during hot weather. It's 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 tablespoon sugar added to 1 gallon cold water. I also freeze this mixture into cubes & plastic containers to add to the watering cans. It keeps my chickens hydrated and happy. And for their entertainment and enjoyment I also put some scratch grains & frozen mixed veggies in a lg cool whip bowl whith water and freeze it. Then pop it out on the ground for them to peck at.

My brother would get 1"X1" wood strip, cut it to fit around the outside of the chick box. Then staple metal window screen to it. The wood blocking is heavy enough to keep it solidly in place. If using outdoors he would add a 1"X4"X3/4" strip across the middle and set a brick on it. This center strip also can have a handle attached to it.

I've always used a glass jar for brooder waterers, they haven't knocked them over yet. (Knock on wood.) Rubber water troughs make good brooders as well and hold heat well without getting too hot or soaking up any moisture from spills. I've heard sand recommended for a brooder substrate many times but have personally never tried it.

I got my first chicks last week and set them up in an old dog crate. I used cardboard along the inside to keep them from trying to squeeze through the bars, with higher pieces around the sides we don't use to view and access the chicks to limit drafts. With just the brooder heater (ambient temps between 66 and 70F and a space heater to guard against anything lower) and natural light from the nearby window, they're happy and healthy.
    Happy chickening, all!

I start with a wooden pallet, and layer the floor with several layers of cardboard, and then nail some wood panels/ plywood around it to make walls. Then I place the wood chips inside and cover it with chicken wire. The heat lamp can hang from above the chicken wire, effectively heating the brooder box, and still being far enough away to not be a fire hazzard.

With the water we use a shallow bowl with a stone in it. The stone kind of stops them drowning in the water and because its shallow the can't kick it over

Good video.... Spot on for the brooder plate, no need in this day and age to risk the danger of a heat lamp. Worth mentioning (as you did a bit): Chicks and Chickens DON'T need grit,,, the food they received (as you alluded to) has already been ground down to amounts for good digestion.
    A few additional suggestions/points:
The paper towels are good if you are receiving mail order - the paper towels prevent (or significantly reduce) splay leg injuries with very young chicks. If you get your chicks from your local Tractor Supply or whatever they'll already have transitioned them to some type of litter.
FAR better than pine shavings is construction grade sand with Sweet PDZ GRANULES and NOT powdered BUT the granular version (it is the mineral Zeolite) added to the sand. The droppings can be picked up using a reptile sand sifter. The other major advantage is that the sand dries out the poop the zeolite/sweet pdz neutralizes ammonia odors from the droppings. Wood shavings have wood dust, sand has sand dust... but the positive trade-off is that the sand (with some PDZ added) is superior in terms of odor control. When I transitioned to sand and a little PDZ for the brooder substrate,,, never went back to pine shavings again. Also do the same with the coop bottom and run (although at the adult stage you can use a long handled kitty scooper at that point). "Once you go sand,,, you understand"... something like that anyway! Also allows them to take dust baths which are a lot of fun to watch with chicks.
Introducing moisture to the chick feed is never a good idea in terms of bio-safety. The brooder temperatures in combination with the food make an ideal breeding environment for bacterial growth. Not worth the risk and wholly unnecessary.
I like using this for a brooder: amzn.to/3kIzWcE but ONLY for use with a brooder plate.
One quick aside regarding 'organic'...... poisonous snakebite, bottulism, ptomaine poisoning and poisonous mushrooms are all organic,,,, but that doesn't make them good. :)
Don't bring the chicks outside until they are reasonably feathered out in combination with reasonably warm outdoor temps.. I"d say at about 5 weeks if they have lost nearly all of their down and have feathers in place (depending on breed) is a good time (weather willing) to begin some initial outings.
Oh finally - .... stop saying 'triggered', you do it in some of your other videos too... LOL... It's clear that any youtube presentation is the opinion (based hopefully on experience) of the vlogger. In other words, why qualify that some may disagree... in the grand scheme of things.... who cares! :) You've already made a great effort on your own time to contribute to the whole.
Very much enjoyed it - always looking for different perspectives and I admire the people who take the time and thought to put these vldeo postings up online.... Lots of work and preparation I'm sure!
    Anyway,,, just a few thoughts!

I believe that the feeder/waterer are red because a chicken will seek out the rooster with the largest red comb for food and protection. Maybe that's why coops and laying boxes are typically painted/stained red.

glue a magnet or two to the bottom of the waterer and where you want it in the brooder, Amazon sells some pretty strong ones in 10 packs for a decent price...

I tried using the largest tote I could find but with the electrtic brooder and feed, water, there was no room left for chicks. I went with a 100 gal tank which was 4ft long by 3ft wide by 3 ft deep. This way there is plenty of room for growth.

I didn't want to cut the lid that came with the 50 gal tote I'm using as a brooder so I cut a piece of old fencing to size and used s hooks to secure it by hooking them under the top lip of the tote and through the fencing.
