In Manitoba Canada, the superstores have a system called Loop, where all food, produce, baked goods, poultry etc that gets discarded because expiration dates, and produce starting to go bad, farmers can pick up loads for free for their animals, so it’s doesn’t go to waste. Saves a TON of money on chicken feed.

For the dust bath, there is a dirt called Diatomaceous Earth. It is a fine powder and natural insect killer. Add it to the area your chickens are bathing in, and they will be insect free.

Does the particulate bother them? I know if a human inhales DE, can not be good.

    • @1N2themystic
      @1N2themystic Год назад +12

@@DylanJBartram There are 2 kinds. The crystalline DE is harmful to breathe. Food grade, or amorphous DE, is fine. You can even use it to rid yourself of intestinal parasites. It helps prevent many garden insects or even around the house. Anything with an exoskeleton will die after contact with a bit of DE.

My wife and I live in a rural area in Central Oregon. Last summer, we discussed and decided to raise chickens. Our property is only one acre. Because of that, we talked with our neighbors to get their approval.
Our ten chicks were delivered at the end of November. We are keeping them in the garage, in a pen, for the winter.

If you've got salmonella in your kitchen I would think that people would be at risk before chickens? Or is it because chickens can carry it? You wouldn't touch the chickens then prepare food for people without washing up. Seems like a backward law that defies common sense.

in England, you must feed chickens before the food goes into the house. so prep carrots, give them the ends, then take the carrots inside. prevents the chickens being contaminated with our diseases, rather than tother way round. Everyone does it like that..... honestly officer.

I agree so much about the automatic chicken door. Are used to think that was just a luxury. Until I got one. OMG! It is so much easier now. I just set the timer so that it closes after dark. 99% of the time all the chickens get in, sometimes it takes the young ones a little bit to figure it out but once they do it's great. Now I don't have to get up at 4 o'clock in the morning just to let them out of the coop during the summer.

Just got our first chicks this week, looking forward to starting everything out. Chick math got us already - when we went to pick up the chicks we had ordered, we accidentally wound up going home with two more than we had planned.
I am not going to be able to do true free range, but am hoping to build a couple spaces to run them in for more exercise besides the main run and coop.
Wound up with some black australorps, barred rocks, wyandottes (blue laced gold), and Starlight green eggers as the last minute wild card.

Some people grow Winecap (King Stropharia)mushrooms in such a way that the underground part of the fungus lives under the chicken run, but don't be surprised if it spreads widely on your property. Although they are a good companion for almost anything growing in a garden. Winecap mushies are very helpful in that they actually live on woodchip or straw mulch and they don't care what kind of wood. They are edible and many say they taste similar to portabella.
Lots of videos on this, Paul Stamets is a great source for mushroom info.

Chooks (as we call them in Australia) also thoroughly enjoy a good mud bath. Tho not too wet! But if the soil is really damp that is ok and they will lap it up. Even better if it is part of a compost heap! So think about how damp compost should be and that is what they like. In winter they will lay in there for hours.

I live in a rural part of my city, so I'm allowed 5 chickens. My friend (neighbor) has chickens and had a rooster, the idiot who live around the corner caused him to get rid of the rooster. He is the same idiot who called a false report about my dogs attacking his dog, which was total BS! I'm going to get a pet rooster who will be my therapy pet, that will keep me calm.

I don't use chemicals on my lawn so my chickens get all the lawn waste, whenever I mow the lawn or trim bushes or pull weeds they get it all. And they love it. And then in the fall with leaves fall they really like that too.

Before we got our girls, chicken run was a pipe carport that we had encircled with a wire fabric fencing and raked full of leaves from three mature oaks. Our puppy loved romping in it also.

What do you use as bedding? Hemp? Even with the fine pine bedding I’m still not getting something quite right.

    Hi I appreciate your videos.
I have a question first time chicken mom.
    I have 5 hens 2 are 9 mos 3 8 mos.
Anyway they all started laying for about 3 months ago. About 6days ago my Easter egger hadn’t laid an egg.
I checked if she was broody, or egg bound and she seems to be fine. She has an appetite still runs around with a lot of energy.
I did separate her from the rest of them to monitor and find her to be okay.
Would you know if that is normal or something else I didn’t look for?
    Mahalo 🤙🏽

I have a pretty large Coop. It's a high dollar deal with wire mesh & a run, they free range during the day. In the winter when I had a small 3 hen coop I used a zero clearance panel heater. Worked good. For the new coop I'm thinking of using a small safety space heater. I do have power in the coop? Thoughts or suggestions?

You might want to investigate a Sweeter Heater. Much safer than heat lamps. Tim in northern TN

In the UK it is only legal to feed kitchen scraps from a totally vegan household. You can however give them fresh veg from your garden.

Did i hear right? You said you give your chickens millet as a treat? Is it spray millet like the kind i give my parakeets and lovebirds as a treat or to train them?

Know that molting can be very stressful sometimes for the chicken.

When can you start feeding them the black larva treats? Our baby chicks are two weeks old. First time chicken owner! Love your channel so much.

We started giving ours black soldier fly larvae in yogurt at maybe 4 weeks.

Black soldier fly treats are high in calcium and since the chicks don't start laying eggs until 4 or 5 months old, there's no way for the extra calcium to be released from their bodies. It's possible that it could kill them, depending on how much you treat them. A lower calcium treat, but high in protein, would be meal worm treats. Safer for chicks and since they haven't had soldier flies they'll love them. Remember to give them chick grit so they can digest the meal worms. You can just leave a small bowl of grit in their area. Good luck.

Canada grocers have a system called loop, where they donate "expired" veggies to farmers to feed to their livestock.

Thanks for the video. I’ve had my 5 girls for a year in March and they haven’t molted yet. Is that something that happens as they age?
When the temps dropped into the single digits this past winter, my girls slept inside my washroom. I let them lay the eggs in the front loader dryer. I obviously put something in there that resembled straw.
They loved being inside but enjoyed going out during the day.

Just curious is the only reason you have feeders in the coop because your in a cold climate?
